I can't imagine a better place to enjoy some time on Catalina, especially for the price. It was everything we wanted, a block from the beach, with a sweet breezy deck with great views that I could have stayed on the whole visit. Such a fun little town, so easy to get to, but *worlds away* from LA. Will be back!

My family and I had a great stay at Trout House! Perfect location, close enough to everything but far enough away for a quiet stay. Beds were comfy, used the very functional kitchen. The place is rustic but everything works well, awesome water pressure and love the history of the house. Great deck for relaxing after a day of exploring. We would definitely stay again!

Small, but comfortable 2 bedroom just a few blocks from the center of Avalon. Great comfy porch for resting after walking around. Historic charm.

My sisters and I enjoyed staying in the Trout House. It was full of history of the island. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked. It was in a super safe area. The porch overlooking the Avalon Cove was wonderful!!! The only reason I rated it four stars was that it needs some updating which I spoke to the property manager about.

If you love Avalon, this is an ideal spot. Far enough away from the hustle and close enough to reach all your favorite spots. Excellent stay

A great little place for our weekend getaway with 2 Adults and 2 teenagers. It's close to the main shopping and dining area and the Vons supermarket is also a short walk. It's an older house with character, a little cramped, but expected due to being built in the early 1900s! Overall, we had a fantastic stay.

Came back a year later to this charming historic home and much to our pleasure, nothing had changed. It is an exquisite historic gem, and if that’s your thing, this is your place. We will be back time and time again.

We stayed here a year ago, and we’re back again. Charming historic home with a perfect location. If you’re into living a piece of Avalon’s history, this is your place!

Remember the motel with the saying, "We'll leave the light on for you."? Well don't expect any lights on with this place. We always follow the rules and respect the property where we're staying. The directions we were sent said to use the side entrance when bringing your luggage into the home. The problem is that there are absolutely NO LIGHTS on the side entrance...but there are uneven random steps! My son's dad fell while carrying his luggage and trying to navigate the unseen stairs. It's dark by 5:30 and he came in on the late ferry. I reached out to the manager via email and left a message on her landline answering machine as a cell number was not provided. It took her the whole day to get back to us and her response was that we should only use the side door when bringing in the luggage and to use the front door when coming and going. I pointed out that the fall occurred because we did exactly that, used the side entrance because we had arrived with our luggage after dark. This point seemed to be completely lost on her as she felt that the problem was solved...or that there wasn't even a problem in the 1st place! She never once apologized or asked if he was ok after the fall. There was no concern whatsoever on her part. When I have guests coming to visit my home, you can be sure that I have my porch light on and they feel welcome. I'm beyond flabbergasted that the entrance you require your guests to use with uneven randomly placed steps and no lights is an acceptable way to have your PAYING guests enter the home. I'm disappointed that I'm not able to attach the pictures I took to this review. To say it's unsafe is an understatement. Beyond the lighting issue the house itself is small and cute but nothing worth a fall on stairs that ruined the rest of our weekend. There were also no directions for the thermostat or where to find it so we spent the 1st night very cold until we found it and turned it on the next day. There is no hairdryer provided so be sure to bring your own. Also no golf cart provided. We were there for a lacrosse tournament so many people from our group had gone the Airbnb route or rented through evolve or whatever and no one else had an experience like ours. That tells me that there are many places available on the island so I would recommend staying elsewhere.

Cute, quirky flat very close to downtown. Very comfortable.

Lovely historic home with terrific local decorations and views. Easy walk down to beaches/shops/restaurants. Contacted property manager in advance and no difficulties with smoke smell mentioned by a prior guest. Only stayed for the weekend so did not make use of kitchen amenities but appreciated that it was well stocked for cooking. Learned from some locals that former owner was a Disney illustrator. Overall was great to stay in this unique spot!

Not as advertised
This unit is a duplex not a single family stand alone home. The property manager lives onsite and smokes weed 24/7. The smoke smell permeates the vents and through the floor boards and through the open windows. The house has a constant stink of weed and incense. If any of this was disclosed I never would have rented it especially with my kids with me…. The pictures are accurate to a point. But overall the experience is one step above “glamping” and with the smells and smoke it was very unpleasant

We'll be back...
This was the perfect place for my wife and our two daughters (all adults) to stay on Catalina. The location was within easy walking distance to most of the restaurants and shops in Avalon. We spent many an hour lounging on the deck at rooftop level with the rest of the neighboring houses enjoying the cool sea breeze and listening to the tolling of the clock bell on the Chimes Tower as the minutes lazily whiled away. We had a wonderful extended weekend, and this cottage was the perfect place for us to stay. A large "thank you" to the hosts for sharing their space and putting together a wonderful retreat setting.

What a beautiful little old house!
My family and I stayed here for almost a week and had a great time. The house is a beautiful fully intact early 1900’s cottage- a real piece of Avalon history. We loved this, chose it because of this, and it was perfect for us. The porch is amazing and the location is ideal. Beds were comfortable and kitchen was functional and equipped. Recent reviews I think need to be mentioned here: yes, the rooms are small- it’s a 120 year old beach cottage. If you are expecting a modern house without any of the old home quirks and beauty, then rent one of the bland condos elsewhere- there’s plenty of them. This place is a well-preserved gem from Avalon’s history and I wouldn’t wish for it to change one bit. We’ll be back next time.

Fall break in Catalina
Grandma, mom and granddaughter got a few nights away for fall break from school. We had a great time walking around town, renting golf carts, eating way too much, and enjoying our view from the deck. Would definitely come back!

Charming....
The house itself is ok. Tiny rooms and everything is old. The master bedroom is so small, the bed touches three of the walls. The other bed is so old and saggy we rolled to the middle constantly. The bathrooms are split to sink and shower and the other bathroom is sink and toilet. The shower head is about 4 feet up the tub so your bent over to shower. The tub also backs up with water constantly. There is zero air flow and only two small fans so be ready for some hot sleeping. The view is nice and the balcony is comfy. Both nights we had someone smoking pot outside, so the house stunk really bad. We had to close the windows to keep our two small children from breathing it. This made things even hotter in the house. We will not be staying at this house again.

Extremely dirty
The property was terribly dirty the kitchen, bathroom, and living room was disgusting. No one cleaned the house before our arrival and it was a big let down that the home had an unpleasant aroma. Definitely would not stay here again.

Perfect Location
This place has got lots of character and is in the perfect location. The house had all the basic items you needed. The manager never responded to my text, wifi was spotty, and there seemed to be lots of car hair, but all and all this was good stay.

Mostly good with some problems
Our trip was mostly good and I want to start off by thanking the property manager who brought our Catalina express tickets down to the ticket booth because I had accidentally left them there at the house. I’m very grateful for her for doing that for us. A couple of problems that we had at the house : first the shower knob would not stay in position -when it was say at 12 o’clock it would automatically slip down towards the 9 o’clock position causing the water to become hotter. It was hard to regulate the temperature in the shower. Another disappointment was the lack of space to put our clothes -there were no shelves, dressers or clothing rods in the main bedroom. The second bedroom had a clothing rod but still no other place to put clothing. My husband suggested dividing the closet and putting a small rod on one side to hang clothing, and put shelves on the other side so that people are able to put their clothes somewhere. We had to live out of our suitcases which was a bit of an inconvenience. Another suggestion is to have a couple of small portable fans in the house -it was quite stuffy and humid and a couple of fans would help to keep it cool, especially at night -it was kind of hard to sleep . Lastly, we were not aware that there was going to be construction going on directly across the street. We literally had to practically shout at each other every day from 8 to 5 during the construction. At one point my husband and I thought that there was a helicopter hovering over the property, but it was the ground compactor machine that the men were using across the street. Luckily we were out on excursions for the greater part of the day, however we were there for periods of time to rest and it was impossible to rest or even hear ourselves when we tried to talk to each other. We most likely would have booked a house elsewhere had we known how noisy it was going to be. All in all we enjoyed the house and the location was very convenient for us we had everything that we needed there -it was nice to have a kitchen and the beach towels and the beach bag came in very handy. I think it’s only fair in the future if construction is going on that VRBO let people know so they have an opportunity to make a choice to stay where it may be a little quieter. These suggestions are also to help improve the quality of the stay for future clients, as the quality of our stay was dramatically impacted by the issues I listed above. Sincerely, Sherri Vitali

Great location great owner
We had a great short stay here. I had emailed the owner before arrival and he was very quick to respond. Very nice guy. The house has some cool history. Very convenient location to walk to coffee shop, arcade, and pier. Met the lady down stair. She was very friendly and offered some tips on where to eat. Overall enjoyable experience.

Great Vacation property
Great vacation home! Loved the patio with a view. Loved all the windows and Dutch door. Allowed for a perfect beachside experience with the ocean air. Cute and comfortable property. I could tell from previous reviews they definitely made some upgrades with furniture. Was definitely a more modern and very comfortable living room, but kept with the seaside charm. I Would definitely like to rent again!

Location cannot be beat!
This was the perfect location- we walked to everything! We also loved the front porch with a view of the ocean. The only drawbacks were the small bedrooms and a noticeable smell from the water heater.

Could use a few updates
There was a bad Odor kind of like sewage near the kitchen. We think it was the water heater. Cable Tv & a hair dryer should be done included in the price.

Comfortable Cottage
Loved the deck and the configuration of the cottage. Each room had many windows, providing sea breezes and spectacular views. The home is well-fitted and we lacked nothing! How relaxing - really felt on vacation. We're close to town yet can kick back at the cottage, whatever we choose. We would come back again -- and again.

Great house in Avalon
Spent a long weekend in this cozy house. Beds were comfortable. Full kitchen and supplies. Short walk to all of Avalon’s restaurants and sights. Most of the time we were on the covered deck. The place was clean.

rustic, nothing fancy, but all the little details to make your stay great are there
perfect for a couple or two, or a couple + 2 kids. Only 1 toilet however. The property manager was onsite when we were there and she was great. She and her beautiful cat Taz add to the charm. Great location. Furnishings and decoration seem ca. 1970s but immaculate inside. A cozy furnished front porch perfect for having a glass of wine at sunset or reading early on a Sunday morning. We would stay here again.

Absolutely loved staying here. It's very small and quaint, but comfortable. The spacious balcony adds additional living space and provides a fantastic view! Will definitely book here again!

The house was convenient to downtown Avalon with everything in walking distance !
My daughter wasn't happy because there was no WIFI, and it was very warm. Sutton was great helping us get an additional fan! The house was in great condition for being over 100 years old. Would recommend updating the mattresses in the near future and maybe a document about where things are and how they work in the home would be helpful.

Snug and relaxing
A nicely equipped, quiet, private place with loads of character and an amazing deck with a view. It may be a hundred-plus years old, but everything works and every room is comfortable. I especially liked the pink-tiled kitchen, the dark-wood living room that opens onto the deck, the dining room (feels like a ship cabin), and the nautical lanterns. Bonus points for good, hot water, blazing Internet, and a big collection of DVDs and board games. It's worth a little walk uphill to get away to this homey house with a view.
