Convenienct location for tourists!
A 65 year old traditional Japanese townhouse located in well known downtown, Mukojima, Tokyo. The house belongs to my husband who spent his childhood there. We are university professors, and the house was too small for us to live with our three children and lots of books, so we have never lived there. After 30 years, I found it quite cool as it looked remaining very nostalgic, which brought me back to the nice and old days of Japan. Now it is very rare to find this kind in Tokyo.
The house was renovated nicely with its original taste. There are two bedrooms; one with a double bed and the other with two singles. The bedrooms on the second floor are floored with tatami mats. There are small but cozy living space and a kitchenette in the first floor. Bathroom with a bathtub and shower head. You will find the 'washlet' in WC.
Since the house was built right after WWII, everything is made small according to the Japanese people's frame at that time. If you are way taller than 6 feet, you may find it a bit close and uneasy.

Wonderful property in a wonderful location. My family and I had a great summer vacation at your home. We can’t wait to visit again. Thank you from Canada!

Nice host & lovely location next to a shrine. Easy walk to 2 stations. Nice traditional elements. Functional (but we were a little tall for the main floor) we had a great time. It was nice to have laundry.

Lucky are those who get to stay in this individual calm wooden Japanese house. As a group of 4 adults we managed well, in this house which was very clean, well equipped with comfortable beds and cooking facilities. The bathroom had a great shower, a Toto and plenty of hot water, a tub if you wish.Yes taller people have to duck through a couple of lower doorways, but don't let that stop you from a unique experience. The location close to the Sumida river allows for beautiful walks. It is an easy walk to supermarkets and train stations located at Skytree. There multiple local small restaurants that are welcoming with great food. There is an excellent bakery close by called Kameya where you will chose a different delight everyday, and you will want to go everyday. Lastly the hosts are thoughtful and informative people who are always available and responsive to communications. A house to remember and return to as soon as possible.

We’ve stayed at Sumire house many times. It’s our favorite lodging spot in Tokyo. It is a traditional mid-century Japanese wooden house in the middle of a lovely Tokyo neighborhood. You’ll be close to great shopping (Tokyo Skytree), trains (easy access to Hikifuni and Oshiage stations), and delicious family run restaurants (too many to name). The house is well equipped, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Note, it can get a bit noisy at night in the winter when the wind kicks up and windows rattle but you quickly get used to it. The owner is kind and helpful. We love it and will keep coming back.

We enjoy all this area has to offer. Walking along the river, easy jaunt over to Asakusa and all the small restaurants and bars lining the backstreets. Close to two stations with big shopping areas around each. Family Mart just out the door and larger grocery two blocks away. Lots of independent bakeries, tofu and tea shops. The owner is very responsive and kind. Thank you for making us feel welcome Sumire House…see you again!

15-night stay, December 31st to January 15, 2024. Good pre-arrival communication(s) with Owner. Good on-site written home information & instructions. Limited kitchen functionality (small fridge, single burner cooking plate, microwave oven, fully-manual drip coffee pot. Pre-arrival notice by Owner of electrical load limitations/"nuisance trippimg". Instinctively prepared for Japan winter weather sleepwear Traditional home characteristcs include low doorways, and steep narrow 2nd level stairway. More functional living area on 2nd level than 1st. Complimentary ear plugs for sleeping appreciated due to proximity to busy road. Great modern washer/dryer. Relatively convenient (8-13 minute walk) to Skytree and Hikifune subway stations/local restaurants/Izakayas. Family Mart convenience store right next store and grocery store within a couple of blocks. Added/unexpected bonus of home being adjacent to neighborhood Shrine.

We loved the cozy house in a very convenient location 8 min walk to Oshiage sky tree train station. Quiet neighbourhood, close to coffee and perfect place from which to explore Tokyo. Hosts very helpful. Highly recommended.

We stayed 9 nights on our recent trip to Tokyo. It is convenient to Hikifune station but we usually walked to Oshiage Station as the trains were usually more convenient.
The home is a bit older (1950s I believe) but it has some modern conveniences. There is an update bathroom, washer/dryer combo, and many updated kitchen appliances. It is a bit basic but has enough for 2-4 guests. There is also a tv avs dvd player.
The beds are very comfortable. The windows are thin so you'll hear a lot of noise from the road and the trains. It didn't bother my wife and I who live in a busy area, but my mother in law used the ear plugs provided and had no issues.
Each bedroom and the living room have separate ductless heaters/ac.
There is a family mart next door and we picked up breakfast and snacks here to have in the house.
The only drawback was being a tall person I did bonk my head about 12 times on the doorway between the kitchen and living room. But that's expected in older Japanese homes (I did the same in our machiya in Kyoto in 2018).
I would recommend this house if you want to experience traditional Japanese home living. The location is convenient to train stations while being in a lovely residential area. There's a lovely temple right next to the house, a couple of times there were musicians and services being held.
The owners were quite nice and quick to reply if we messaged with any questions.
We would definitely stay here again.

The property was in great condition and had a great feel to it. It is in a great location, perfect for walking around to places and with the shrine so close it is a great introduction when you first arrive into the area.

With our family we enyoyed the stay in this area and house. Coffee and food in the familymarket nearby was very practical. Some nice restaurants, the sumida river is close. We did a walk to Asakusa along the river. With subway everything was reachable, Oshiage skytree gives a good vieuw for a start. The house is clean and individual with a historical charme .The shower and air conditioner worked fine.
We enyoyed the whole stay here and could have stayed longer.

We enjoyed our stay here very much. The juxtaposition between Tokyo Sky Tree and this classic home was so fun. We stayed here for most of a week. Great access to Tokyo Sky Tree and the rest of Tokyo via Oshiage and Hikifune stations. Convenience store steps away and a grocery store down the street allowed for quick meals and cooking at the house. The owners are very responsive, friendly and accommodating. Will certainly stay again.

My boyfriend, best friend and I stayed here for about 10 days. It was the most comfortable and beautiful space we have ever stayed at. The location was super convenient, quiet and pretty. There was even a shrine outside the front door! We would stay here over and over again. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

The Sumire house was an excellent find. It’s location allowed for easy access to the rest of Tokyo— and the relaxed nature of the Mukojima meant the hustle and bustle of the city disappeared while you were in the neighborhood.
Great cozy little spot!

My group and I had a wonderful time in this house! It's very charming, and the hosts are very nice and helpful.
The house is close to transit (bus/train), there's a Family Mart right next door, and there are a lot of really good restaurants and other interesting places in the neighborhood.
We would all highly recommend this house!

Second stay and definitely won’t be the last. My brother joined me and we had a great time reliving some childhood memories with this charming home as our launching point each morning. Great location with lots of food options and close to two train stations.

It as our first visit back to Sumire House since 2020. Lovely to see the neighborhood was still the same with most local businesses surviving and thriving. The little house is as welcoming as ever. Love the location and vibe. We had perfect weather for walking and enjoyed doing lots of that. It is a fun area to explore. Enjoyed every minute and we will be back. Thank you Sumire House.

Our group really loved the location of this house! We used the metro every day to get around the Tokyo area and did a lot at the nearby Solamachi. My tall traveling companions had issues with some entryways but were able to figure it out. The house was cozy in the winter and worked well for us.

This home was perfect for us. The beds were comfy, the shower had great pressure, and the historical charm of the home was perfect. The owners were so great when we had to reschedule due to covid and provided great instructions for everything! Thank you for letting us stay!

Great place in a great neighborhood
Enjoyed my stay despite the issues with the virus . Small enough neighborhood to keep my social distancing up and most restaurants offer take out. Will come back again soon when things get better.

Wonderful stay in Tokyo!
This property is a real find - a unique place to stay. It is on one of the many back streets of Sumida, very close to the Hikifune station, Family Mart, and many shops and restaurants. The house is small, but perfect for our family of 3 - comfortable beds, nice bathroom, and kitchen. There is traffic noise at night, but it didn't bother us at all. I highly recommend Sumire house and would stay here again!

Neighbourhood Vibe
I really enjoy the experience of a home in a neighbourhood where people are living their lives...the traditional shops, grocery stores, restaurants and parks are easy and convenient for you too! There are two metro stops within easy walking distance...the big one at Tokyo SkyTree and a smaller neighbourhood station. The bus stops just around the corner and we used it for short rides. The convenience of The Family Mart just around the corner can not be underestimated. Communication with the owner is always punctual, informative and personal. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this trip to Tokyo. Staying at traditional Sumire House made it special.

Excellent accomodation
We stayed for a week in January. Great base to explore Tokyo. Easy 10 minute walk from station (Oshiage station next to Tokyo Skytree tower) and there is a train that runs direct to Narita airport. It’s a lovely walk through Sumida and across the river to Asakusa or you can catch a bus on the nearby road. I slept fine but there is some road noise especially in the morning but earplugs were supplied! A great supermarket is located 5 minutes away as well as a variety of local restaurants. A family mart is also located 30 seconds from the front door. If you want to stay in a residential area of Tokyo a bit away from the noise and crowds Sumire is the perfect place to stay. And the small shrine beside the house is a beautiful bonus.

It was easyI to get to the house from airport. We loved the neighborhood and easily accessible train stations. Felt safe and comfortable. And the next door shrine is amazing!

Authentic Japanese experience
We loved staying at this lovely home in the middle of a wonderful neighbourhood. A lovely cafe nearby where we had several leisurely breakfasts - lots of places to buy groceries - close to the Skytree and Hikifune for subway rides. Just a lovely vibe here. The house was very clean, the beds were great. It is very noisy but the earplugs were a saviour! Shower is small but loved the warm toilet seat! Really no livingroom but the two chairs worked for what we needed. It embodied a history of a bygone era and I would happily come back again. The hosts were very communicative and attentive. Loved it!

This is a great place to stay
This place is easy to get to from the airport Via Skyaccess to Oshiage station.
There are two stations close by, Oshiage and Hikifune which make it easy to get to wherever you're going.
The house is small but comfortable. There's plenty of space to drop your luggage, sleep, shower and do laundry. There is also a simple kitchen area with fridge, hot plate, microwave and sink.
You'll have Family Mart right outside your door, plus a grocery store and 7-11 up the street.
Now as for the noise factor, yes it is noisy in Tokyo. I wore earplugs at night and I slept just fine.
This is not a good place for a tall person. I am 6 feet tall and I hit my head numerous times the first couple of days. It would be difficult for anyone over 6 feet to get around inside the apartment.
The neighborhood is charming and laid back. If you like to walk, you can walk to Skytree and across the river to Asakusa. We spent one full day just walking all over Sumida and Asakusa.
Overall this is great place to stay for a very reasonable fee. I would recommend it and I would definitely stay here again.

A wonderful taste of Tokyo
The property lived up to our expectations. The photos and description was quite accurate and we received excellent support when we asked for assistance in navigating the streets and transportation systems. We would choose this property for a future visit to Tokyo if it becomes possible. We found the property in good repair and well equipped.
The property was in good repair and the dishes and cooking facilities were of good quality. The property was well supplied to meet the needs of a traveler.

Cozy, traditional house
All of us enjoyed staying at Sumida House. There was a very informative guide and any questions were quickly answered by the hosts. The bedrooms had plenty of room and the beds were comfortable. The only reason for four stars instead of five is there is a very busy road close by and it was quite loud making sleeping difficult. However this would not keep me from staying again but I would bring ear plugs next time.

Comfy house in convenient location!
Stayed here in summer of 2018 prior to this visit and was pleased to find it was consistently in good shape! Very convenient location next to two stations and several convenience stores and a supermarkey nearby. House was the perfect size for our party of three, but if you’re a family that’s a little bigger might be a tight fit. Beds are great, bathroom is clean and the aesthetic is very relaxing. Would always recommend!

Great Tokyo neighborhood experience
We had been to Tokyo before and always stayed in the tourist areas on the west side of the river. This time we were interested in experiencing life in a Tokyo neighborhood and we found that at Sumire House. The house is old (immediate post-war) but well maintained and retains many traditional features. (Even if you’re average height you need to watch your head in places.) At the same time it has a modernized bathroom, washer/dryer, good wifi, and tv with many channels including a few in English. We enjoyed exploring the neighborhood, which had many small shops and restaurants. Like other reviewers we encountered many non-English speakers, but we found people were very nice and we were able to get by with our limited Japanese. (We avoided places where it looked like language would be an issue if they were very busy.). Although a little off the beaten path, the house is about a 10 minute walk to two train stations that provide good access to the rest of Tokyo. The owners and property manager were very nice and responsive. This house isn’t for everybody, but if you’re interested in experiencing Tokyo beyond the tourist zone we highly recommend it.

Sumire House - Full of Character <3
We loved our stay at this sweet little house in a traditional neighborhood next to a beautiful Shinto Shrine. Despite being older, it's very well equipped with a large bathroom by local standards, a nicely stocked kitchen with everything you need to cook and store food, and comfortable beds! It's convenient for seeing historic parts of the Sumida ward including Asakusa and many museums, situated close to a beautiful pedestrian and cyclist only bridge crossing the Sumida river. The very modern Skytree is also close by; along with restaurants of all kinds. The Hikifune and Oshiage(Skytree) train stations aren't too far, but expect to walk a little ways and plan your days. We had a great time and would highly recommend Sumire House!
