About this apartment rental
Treat yourself to a relaxing, rejuvenating and inspiring retreat in your own private historic studio cottage in the heart of Stonecrop, the estate owned by Anita M. Smith — renowned writer, artist, historian and “Herb Lady of the Catskills.”
Nestled at the gateway to Woodstock’s legendary Overlook Mountain, Rock City Writer’s Studio is walking distance (just over 1/2 mile) to the Woodstock Village Green, where you’ll find galleries, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Or just stay home and relax in your bucolic retreat surrounded by wildlife and nature.
Prepare snacks and meals in your well-equipped kitchenette (with a 2-burner electric range, full fridge, microwave and other electric appliances), and serve them at the kitchen cafe table, on the screened-in bluestone porch, or at the bluestone table on the lawn with a gas grill surrounded by gardens.
Treat yourself to a relaxing sauna in your Nordic sauna for two, followed by a shower in the kitchen stall under a skylight.
NEW FOLDOUT SOFABED
The living room converts into a cozy bedroom at night. We are happy to announce that our original sofabed has been replaced by a new Comfort Sleeper by American Leather. This high-end "marvel of engineering" opens into a luxurious queen bed with a solid platform (no bars, springs or sagging) and a thick high-density foam mattress with luxury linens. Described as a "non-sofabed", the Comfort Sleeper is easy to operate, glides open and closed effortlessly, and is comfortable for a restful night's sleep!
The living room also features a 32” flat-screen HDTV with cable service and a Blu-Ray player, as well as an extensive collection of books and DVDs. Other amenities include spa towels and robes, WIFI, and private parking.
NEW HEATING SYSTEM
We are also thrilled to announce that we have replaced and upgraded our winter heating system! In response to feedback we received from guests about a “ticking" sound when the elements/coils in the old system were heating/expanding (an unfortunate characteristic of baseboard heat), we have installed a new hydronic system that is not only highly-efficient and environmentally-friendly, but also "whisper-quiet". The new heater is very responsive and effective at quickly heating the studio and maintaining any temperature you choose, while not making a single sound. And for guests who have trouble sleeping in absolute silence, we have installed a white noise generator to provide background noise.
PETS
Well-behaved and crate-trained dogs are considered ~ please ask. Please note that dogs must be crated when left alone in the cottage, and leashed when outdoors. A $100/week pet fee per dog applies.

The studio is very adorable and quaint. The location is amazingly central to Woodstock without being too close. The property is beautiful and well maintained. I wanted to just lounge in the yard and bask in the beautiful natural setting.

This sweet spot is a great place to experience the beauty of the area, and the cozy cottage also makes for a nice romantic getaway.
My husband and I used it as home base for exploring various towns in the Hudson Valley and its proximity to Woodstock-proper can't be beat.
Also, the kitchen is well stocked with all kinds of cookware, and since we also attended a group potluck event, I was able to make a fab dish with what was available in the kitchen.
Highly recommended.

The stay was wonderful. Peaceful and private place with a water source in the back yard that you can hear. Clean home and open communication with host. I highly recommend and will return in the future.

Great Solo Trip
I had a wonderful stay at the property as a solo traveler! Everything was exactly as specified, and I felt like I had everything I needed. It was a perfect few minute drive from town and close by to the other area towns I wanted to visit. It’s worth seeing who is playing at Leven Helms Studios, which is a unique concert venue and a quick five minute drive. I did want to mention that although the shower was fine for me, if not a bit cramped, that if you are a larger person, it may be an issue for you. I look forward to returning another time with my husband!

Peace at Rock City
This stay was nothing short of amazing. From the beginning all of my questions were answered promptly and when I needed to adjust my stay the accommodations were made with no issues. The home itself is small but perfect for my single girls getaway. I needed down time where I could recharge. This place allowed just that. It was quiet and secluded yet the location allowed easy trips to town and surrounding areas. It was well appointed and had everything I needed for. 5-night stay. I would highly recommend this location for a single or couple. Would love to come back again soon!

So Nice, I've Stayed There Thrice
I just finished my third-ever stay at Rock City Writers Studio. Previously, I'd stayed in fall 2016 (with another adult) and spring 2017 (by myself), for 3-4 days each time. This time, I stayed for a full week, and I had my 15-year-old daughter with me, because I wanted her to experience the peace & quiet and quirky charm of RCWS. We both loved the feeling of having a tiny little house all to ourselves, and enjoyed seeing bunnies and cats out in the yard on most days. The sleeper couch is still comfy and convenient -- a snap to deploy and put away. My daughter was initially suspicious of the little shower "closet" in the kitchen, despite me assuring her that she'd be fine. Once she tried it for herself, she was sold! Three of the days of our stay were extremely hot, with a heat index over 100 degrees. On those days, RCWS was very hot inside when we got back for the evening. Leaving the kitchen door open to the screened-in porch for a couple of hours fixed that problem -- aided and abetted by the box fan that I'd brought from home. Overall, this is a charming little place. It's become an important part of my visits to Woodstock. I will definitely be back!

Quiet small house with lovely garden.
The studio was clean and convenient--a short drive to town (though we didn't feel comfortable walking it since there is no shoulder on the road). The garden is green and lovely and we spent many afternoons reading and relaxing there. It's a nice quiet location--very nice.

Deer gardien
Because this deer was every day morning and evening laying down front of our bed window. So cute like a guard.
Very peaceful location, really enjoyed it.
Close to Woodstock “downtown”.

Serene writing retreat
My partner and I came up for some time and space to focus on our individual writing projects. The studio was so perfect for this. There were extra tables and chairs, clear instructions, and the place was outfitted with everything we could need. Enjoying coffee in the garden and the sauna were wonderful ways to relax. Would definitely stay again.

Cozy getaway
Our stay was great, perfect little place for two of us and the dog. Big fan of the sauna, property manager did a great job communicating with us as well.

Small, but does the job.
Although the unit is only about 550S.F. by my rough measurement, it was comfortable and the new sofabed gave me a reliable good-night sleep every time. I enjoyed the sauna out on the enclosed patio and used that every night. I took one star off on the "Cleanliness" not because the unit wasn't clean, it was. But we're out in the woods and I think that a furry friend (mouse?) had found it's way into the walls...I heard him the first 2 nights in the bathroom wall so I just closed the bathroom door and that was that. All in all a very nice unit, I'd stay there again.

Very Cozy Studio
We enjoyed our stay at the Rock City Writer's Studio very much. It was very cozy and comfortable. We enjoyed being able to make our own meals in the very efficient kitchen. It had everything we needed including coffee. thanks for that. We liked the sauna on the porch. That was a real treat.
The sofa bed was very comfortable. We were a bit concerned at first but it was way better than other sofa beds we have had in the past. Due to the weather we didn't get to be out in beautiful yard. The studio was a short ride to the main street. We enjoyed walking in town and seeing all the shops and restaurants. We visited the Colony one evening, the Pub another time and the Shindig. We were happy to get film festival tickets on Friday. That was an unexpected pleasure, too. We went to the book store in town and purchased the two books that were in the Studio by Weston and Julia Blelock and Anita Smith. They are both terrific and a great reminder of our wonderful adventure in Woodstock and our stay at Rock City Writer's Studio. We hope to return again.

Perfect Girls Getaway
We really enjoyed our stay. Everything we needed was right there. The location of the cottage is perfect... less than a mile from Woodstock proper. It is a little quirky, but that’s part of why it’s perfect. It is the perfect place to reconnect and rest.

Woodstock revisit
The studio is a perfect location to visit town and the mountains. It is tight quarters but very effietently thought out and very well equipped. The kitchen had everything we needed. The private yard was terrific to relax in.

Loved this quaint hideaway
I didn’t want to leave! Loved the attention to detail which made this tiny space very liveable and cozy. So comfortable and quiet- great combination of feeling away from it all but walked into town easily for restaurants and live music. Even with so much to do I preferred the time spent in the cabin - reading, watching a DVD (unusual selection!), drinking coffee, having a glass of wine and watching fireflies in the trees. V well equipped kitchen, bathroom, loved little touches - robes, beach towels, local honey. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

This is a beautiful, treed, private property with wilderness all around. We had deer and fawns walking through the yard and the most spectacular firefly display at night. It is rural enough that you have complete darkness at night to enjoy the stars and close enough to town that we could walk everywhere we went.
The cottage is small but contains everything we needed for a weekend getaway.
We walked from the cottage to Overlook Mountain which was a significant outing (4 hours return including stops for snacks and water). The scenery is stunning and the lookout view was well worth the effort.
We also spent a large amount of time in town shopping, eating (multiple meals at the wonderful Garden Cafe) and even took in a concert at the Colony. It is a wonderful little town full of welcoming and helpful people.

Nice cabin but not ideal for writing
Charming cabin in a secluded spot with lots of privacy. Because it is called a "Writer's Studio," I expected that it would be ideal for writing, but other than the isolation, it is not. Writers need a table for working and laying out their materials, as well as a comfortable writing chair, and if possible, a view. There was only a small table on the porch and the chair was a tiny wooden kitchen chair. After I brought the table into the cabin, the cramped space was even more so. The sofa bed is nice but better for younger people (I'm in my 60s). After six nights on it my back and neck were pretty sore. Perfect place for younger visitors on leisure time!

Beautiful place. Cozy and convenient.
Spent a snowy weekend here to write and it was absolutely perfect. The studio was warm, the pull-out bed was comfortable, and I did not have to worry about digging my car out of the snow! The owners were also kind enough to shovel a path out of the studio for me.
Private and peaceful. Highly recommended.

Wonderful!
This little cottage is so adorable and exactly as pictured. I would definitely come back. It's tucked away behind a private gate so feels very private. My one complaint is that the baseboard heat makes a clicking sound all night- I would recommend bringing a noise machine as it's pretty disruptive to your sleep!

Quaint cottage not far from town. Had everything we needed. The sauna was a nice touch!

Charming & Quaint Cottage
This is our second time staying at the Writer's Studio. This time we stayed in late November with some unexpected snow (about 10"). It was so nice to find that the walkway and driveway were all cleared from the snow before heading out for the day. Judy was super quick to respond to some questions that we had and we couldn't have been happier to stay once again. I like its close proximity to town and family. The place was spotless and the extra socks came in handy for the cold nights. Thanks again for having us and I'm sure we will return again in the future.

Wonderful stay!! Would stay again!!
The house was exactly as advertised, it was very quaint and cosy, and the attention to small details made it extremely attractive inside. Even though it is small you don't feel too cramped. The kitchen had everything we needed in terms of crockery (some condiments but no olive oil, a selection of teas that was appreciated, and the coffee was available and ready to use). We did bring a dutch oven to cook on the stove top since there is no actual oven, which I knew ahead of time. As per previous reviews a couple of things to note: the heating does make a loud clicking noise - I had followed the owners recommendation to the previous visitor and turned the thermostat down before going to bed which solved the issue. The house is close to the owners property but feels very private since it is fenced in and you have a large garden which felt like it was our own - it does look like it is shared with another house that is on air and b however, so I imagine if that one was occupied during the stay and people were out in the garden it would have felt less private. The location is very convenient for hiking trails, and the town of Woodstock. Whilst it is walking distance we did not feel safe walking at night since it is a country road and extremely dark without much lighting - but Ubers were available. The weather was really cold during our stay and I could not get the sauna hot enough to really enjoy it - I am not sure if this was due to the outside temperature or the fact that it is electric and not steam operated - that said I am sure if I had contacted the property manager I would have been able to get assistance, we just got busy doing other things and abandoned the idea. The shower is in an odd place as previously described. It is not particularly convenient to dry off in the kitchen but that is the layout of the house is and we were expecting it from reading the reviews; it is offset by the fact that there is a skylight so you are showering under the stars which is a nice touch. From a space perspective it would have been nice to have a separate bedroom, but it is a studio and is advertised as such so you know that, and there is so much to do in the area we (myself, my boyfriend and our dog) weren't in the house enough for it to be much of an issue. Chelsea set everything up for us well with regards to instructions prior to arrival and was very communicative during checkout. Very happy with our stay!

THIS PLACE IS HEAVEN ON EARTH!
The Writers Studio was perfect. This was my second stay and we could not of asked for more. Quite and peaceful and yet close to the Village of Woodstock.

Winter. We are sure that you will be pleased.

Very tiny but just what we were looking for
It’s perfectly tiny for a quick weekend getaway (the sofa bed is better than a couch but of course not as great as a real bed). Very quaint and clean and only a 3 minute drive into town. The city has some great shops and live music!
The hosts were incredibly organized and helpful.
We had a great time overall.

The cabin was so cozy
After a day of hiking in the chilly and rainy weather, this cabin was so warm and cozy to come home to. We couldn’t get enough of the warm natural light with the private garden and yard. I would recommend this cozy cabin to anyone wanting a mountain escape. I stayed here with my boyfriend. It can be tight, but very comfortable if you don’t mind sharing the small space. We had such a relaxing and wonderful stay.
