About this house rental
"As cozy as a cottage and as spacious as a house." Some call it a "house," others a "cottage," others a "cabin." Whatever it is, it's comfortable, informal, and relaxing. Built in 2000, our place offers the convenience of 1 level living and an open floor plan. It is really is a contemporary house with the look and feel of a traditional shingled cottage.
The cottage also provides the comfort and peace of mind only modern utilities can provide: a mini-split air conditioner that cools the living area; a 2024 whole-home, permanently installed propane-fired automatic emergency generator that is always "on call" and ready to go; a 2024 new oil-fired furnace that provides central heat when needed, with two separate zones (one for living and one for the bedrooms); and a 2025 heat pump heater that provides plenty of domestic hot water.
We recently completed our 14th year as hosts. We lost count at 100 happy vacation groups of 2 to 5 guests from the majority of US States and 2 foreign countries. Many guests return. A few have considered our place their "summer home" in Maine and have stayed for long periods repeatedly.
This is a great place for a small family, or two friendly couples traveling together. Consider the savings of two budgets splitting the already modest cost. The layout works well for sharing.
*** THE SETTING ***
"Home Away from Home." *Peaceful* country setting bordered by an extensive woodland, open space, while being close to the center of town. Many call it an "oasis." Others have called it "a sanctuary."
Although located in it own quiet enclave, this cottage is just a 15 to 20 walk to downtown and the picturesque inner harbor. The Cottage is in a long established residential neighborhood of quintessential late-19th-century Maine homes. (Our home and carriage house, next door, were built in the 1890s.)
"Leafy" Pearl St. is well known and appreciated locally as an interesting, diverse neighborhood of single family homes in the “traditional village” zone.
A brand new street surface and ADA-compliant paved sidewalk were completed during 2024, connecting the cottage safely and conveniently—and providing a pleasant short drive or walk— to the center of town. In 2025, a sidewalk is scheduled to connect us, as well, with the Hannaford supermarket shopping center, also just or 15 minutes on foot.
We have no close neighbors, street corners, or busy traffic closely crowding our place, although there is very occasionally a special event next door at the American Legion Hall (no bar in this one). This happens perhaps once a month. The Legion also hosts public pancake breakfasts on a regular basis, twice month on alternate weekends.
Inside, there is ample indoor space for both privacy and to stretch out and relax.
There is a long driveway and private off street parking, for the exclusive use of guests.
Over the years, we have created many colorful informal gardens that feature flowering trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals on nearly an acre of land. We love giving guests tours of our gardens and encourage them to take photos.
We live next door for easy communication, and love to give personal recommendations. We make our friendly assistance available at all times but we also respect your privacy if you wish to keep to yourselves.
Among the gardens is a large open lawn where the kids can run about. You can keep an eye on them from the balcony/deck, or just enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning or your own refreshments in the evening.
*** INDOORS ***
Usual occupancy is 2, 3, or 4. A 5th guest can be accommodated for a $100 additional linens fee.
We clean to a high standard between stays, and refreshers can be arranged if you wish additional cleaning during a long visits.
David likes to pick and arrange fresh flowers for you weekly, or even more often upon request.
The square footage is 1350 sq. ft. Some say it is roomier than it appears in photos. The entry, dining, kitchen and living areas are as you enter, and the bed- and bathrooms are located down a short hall in the back. This is good for sleeping because it is especially quiet in the back of the cottage, next to the woods.
There are traditional, substantial home-like furnishings; we value comfort more than style. We keep it casual. Our place was originally furnished as a home, not to be a motel, hotel, B&B, or newly renovated or upscale vacation rental. Some might call it a little old-fashioned. A few of the pieces (like there Lazy Boy recliner) you might described as "well-loved." So, guests need to worry about accidentally soiling the upholstery! You can put your feet up.

Guests loved the beautiful gardens, well-appointed cottage, and the warm hospitality of the owners Dave and Paula. They felt like they were in a hallmark movie and appreciated the helpfulness and genuine care received.

This is a very, very comfortable modern cottage-like real house in the middle of a fantastic perennial botanical garden. Quiet, isolated and yet in the middle of whatever you want to do. The hosts are concierge level or invisible, your choice. Too bad that are not 10 star ratings for this get-away-and-relax nest.

Love the home and gardens! The owners Dave and Paula were great. They were very helpful and friendly. You will fall in love with all the flowers. I feel like we were in a hallmark movie. We will definitely be back.

The cottage is spacious, comfortable, homey, and well appointed. Plenty of creature comforts that made our stay enjoyable. Lovely neighborhood that was quiet but welcoming, close to downtown shops and wonderful restaurants. Plenty of privacy even though help and assistance was only a door knock away. Most of all, we truly appreciated the genuine hospitality of Dave and Paula, who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure we were safe and sound during the landfall of hurricane Lee. We look forward to visiting the Garden Cottage again, and whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who ventures this way.

Comfy, non-fussy & quiet cottage on owner’s property. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and within striking distance of so much in this part of Maine and less than 5 minutes to historic Camden.
We so enjoyed our visit and David’s helpfulness with things to do and see. The cottage was perfect (and thoroughly equipped) for we two couples traveling together. Loved coming ‘home’ and just relaxing after long days of ‘touring and doing’. Our 7-day stay was just too short!

As indicated with 5 stars in all categories above our stay was certainly better that we had expected. David's outdoor property was well kept that emphasized his gardening skills with flowers and bushes that that gave the property a wonderful woodsy effect. What was unexpected in our journey to Maine was a mechanical problem with the tailgate hatch on our car. After I purchased the parts required, David not only lent me the tools, but actually helped with replacement. David is a congenial and well-rounded conversationalist along with tips and info on the local lore of the area and Maine itself. Not to disregard the house which was immaculate and every possible household item was initially provided.

Fantastic Stay and Fantastic Hosts!
Wow! Everything was great! David and Paula are amazing hosts, very kind, knowledgeable and super helpful if needed . We were very comfortable, plenty of room for the four of us, super clean, and beautiful gardens to enjoy! If I could I would have given 10 stars! Thank you for a fantastic stay, we look forward to returning in the future. Sharon, Rob, Gail and Andy

Beautiful garden cottage in Camden
From the moment we arrived, we enjoyed everything about our one month stay at David and Paula’s cottage in Camden. The location in a residential area less than a mile walk to town was perfect-quiet and peaceful away from tourist areas but with easy access to everything. The cottage itself was just right for two couples: spacious and well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. And our hosts were always available for any questions or advice that we needed. Also, the gardens provided much peaceful enjoyment as we relaxed on the porch. David kept our vase full of fresh flowers from their wonderful garden. Highly recommend for a great stay in Camden!

Couldn’t be better
The Garden Cottage is a wonderful place to stay when visiting the mid coast. Well located, just a short walk from downtown, tucked next to the Merryspring Nature Center, the cottage is a tranquil oasis in a spectacular garden. The cottage itself is well appointed and has everything you’ll need for a comfortable And relaxing stay. Morning coffee on the deck overlooking the beach roses is a particular treat. David and Paula are gracious hosts who are quick to help in any way they can. We would highly recommend a stay at the cottage.

Restful get away!
David and Paula,
They're is not enough I can say to express how wonderful our stay in the cottage was for us. The place is perfect and offers everything needed when you are away from home. In fact it felt like home. Your property is beautiful. Every direction is an exquisite view. We love the care that you have poured into your landscape. Thank you for the personal care you showed us and the thoughtful offer of art supplies to Jo. Your recommendations for food and places to go were spot on though we spent most of or time at the cottage. We do have some perishable items to leave that we hate to throw away. Any suggestions?
Thank you for everything!

Lovely cottage in Camden
The photos do not do justice to his beautiful cottage in Camden. Spacious and sunny, it’s located on a quiet street moments from downtown Camden. David is an artist and master gardener. The grounds are like a mini botanical garden and there are fresh flowers on the windowsill. The cottage is well maintained and spotlessly clean. It’s also well equipped, with everything you need in the kitchen, bath and laundry.
We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay and could not have been more comfortable. A return trip is already being planned.

What a lovely cottage, hosts, and location! David could not be more helpful and welcoming. The garden is glorious. Lovely location for walking to Camden (15 min walk, if that), and for exploring mid-coastal Maine. We had a wonderful stay, and hope to return! The house is completely equipped, and comfy.

This property is a haven of beauty and stillness. The kitchen is wonderfully stocked, we loved the Master bedroom with it's own bath, and Dave and Paula could not have been more gracious. Dave's garden is such a pleasure to see. We highly recommend this property.

Comfortable cottage in Camden
We enjoyed staying at the Garden Cottage. For us the location was perfect, within walking distance of Camden harbor and shops and also within easy driving access to Rt 1 toward Rockport and Rockland. Check-in is the old- fashioned way, in person. David was waiting for us to give us the keys and a tour of the cottage (really a house) . The next day David showed us around their extensive gardens, which are as beautiful as the pictures. It's a lovely setting. The cottage itself is well-supplied with just about everything we needed for our stay including a washer and dryer (detergent provided), a super size drying rack (which I prefer to a dryer most of the time), an abundance of hangers, drawer space for clothes, internet, pots for steaming clams (we had Graffam Bros and Hannaford steam lobsters for us), a nice supply of serving dishes, pots and pans, utensils, dishes and glasses, and some comfortable chairs in the living room. We bought excellent local coffee to brew when we didn't go out for breakfast, although there was some starter coffee (and there were lots of filters on hand). There are some basic spices; we didn't do any serious cooking so salt and pepper was sufficient for us. We travel with our own shampoo and soap for the shower although a bar of soap was supplied. There is an extensive collection of books about Maine as well as a helpful list of recommendations from David and Paula. All in all, a homey and comfortable place and we would stay there again.

Clean comfortable property in a quiet setting
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the garden cottage. It was quiet and very comfortable and suited my needs perfectly. The location on the edge of town was quiet but close enough to downtown for convenient shopping and dining. Camden is such a nice town. The Blanchards were excellent hosts and very friendly. I hope to return to their property again someday.

Beautiful Getaway
The cottage was lovely. It met all of our expectations and then some. The Blanchard's were wonderful hosts - available if needed, but respected our privacy. They had wonderful suggestions on places to go, how far away from the property, places to eat. I think we took advantage of nearly everything on their list and we were not disappointed. This was our first visit to Maine and it has left a lasting impression.

Like being at home, away
The setting, the house itself, and the appurtenances in it--from pots and pans to cable TV--made us feel at home. In fact, being there like being at home, away. But as tourists, it was good to have an extensive collection of books and pamphlets about Maine at hand, and the helpfuless of our hosts concerning restaurants, places to see, and and boat trips to take--a high point of our trip.

Cozy home away from home
Got hot and humid early in August, unusual for the area, no air conditioning. Suggest wall air unit for emergency weather change. Owners are close by and very friendly and helpful. Our second four week stay.

Enjoyed my stay immensely...
I enjoyed my stay in the garden cottage immensely. It has all the comforts of home and the garden is lovely and tranquil. It is walking distance to the downtown area of Camden...a very charming town. The hosts were helpful with tips on where to go to eat or to explore the area. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting David and Paula!

EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!
This has been the third time for us at Garden Cottage and it still feels light home in a very peaceful setting. The Blanchards are very wonderful host with a willingness to help in any way that might be needed. We highly recommend this property in the center of the Maine coast.

A Great Place for Working Remotely
My husband and I stayed at the Cottage for a week in August 2017 and we each needed to work during our stay. We required excellent and consistent internet connectivity and this cottage provided it. The Cottage is equipped with broadband WiFi as well as ethernet ports for direct connection of computer and/or VoiP phone. My husband’s work requires him to be on the phone quite a bit so he used the single room “office” which has a desk and a wonderful view of the garden. I used the dining room table which has great light and also garden views. The acoustics are such that we didn’t hear each other unless we wanted to! There were no issues whatsoever which made for a very successful work week/vacation.

Charming Camden Cottage
We were delighted with our stay in the charming cottage and with our wonderful hosts, David and Paula. The cottage was fully equipped, very clean and extremely comfortable. The view from the deck of the lovely gardens, while sipping your morning coffee was heavenly! The location is excellent for day trips to neighboring towns and harbors. I highly recommend this vacation rental. And, I would definitely go back again and again!

Cottage in the garden
We had a great time staying at Paula and David's cottage. One of the pluses for us is two full bathrooms and a washer and dryer. The kitchen has everything you need and she provides things like dish detergent, coffee, etc, to get you started.
Our grandsons will remember the ride David gave them around the property in the trailer behind his tractor.
David and Paula had helpful ideas and provided full written directions for everything. We just hope we can come back next summer.

Wonderful Place to Spend a Vacation
We would echo all the other GREAT reviews of the garden cottage. It was everything that all the previous renters said. The location is perfect - very quiet, away from the summer bustle which is in town, yet close enough for a lovely walk down to the harbor.. The house itself is roomy with lots of storage, immaculate, well supplied, and surrounded by beautiful gardens filled with a variety of colorful flowers. Sitting on the deck looking over the property is peaceful and so lovely. David and Paula are perfect hosts and take so much pride in their property. They welcomed us with freash flowers in the kitchen and told us we were welcome to stroll the property whenever we wanted. David even cut a fresh gladiola stem for the jug on the deck for us to enjoy! The area around Camden is spectacular. Don't miss going out to Owl's Head, hiking in the Land Trust areas (especially Beech Hill), walking the causeway to the Rockland lighthouse, going to the top of Mt. Battie even in the rain, and enjoying the many restaurants and stores in town. We also loved the nature cruise from Port Clyde, seeing the puffins and watched as the crew pulled in some lobster traps. The cottage bookshelves are full of books and magazines about Maine, and the buffet drawer is overloaded with brochures and information about the area. The choices are endless! Our time went too quickly and we were so happy we picked this lovely place to stay. You will be, too.
