About this cottage rental
Come enjoy your stay in our Historic "Beach Box" across the street from the beach. This 2 bedroom 1 bath cottage is just steps away from a very exclusive and beautiful beach. We have central heat/air, washer/dryer, High Speed Wifi, Smart 65" TV and plenty of off street parking.
Our beautful little cottage features two queen pillow top beds and two twin pillow tops. We have a full size kitchen with all that's needed to cook a full dinner!
We hope you will love the original wood plank walls and ceilings. This is the way they built these original cottages years ago. Even the cabinets are built from the same wood and by the same carpenters. A very Historic Outer Banks Beach Cottage. This beach cottage can be described as Rustic. We are making improvements to our new addition and you may notice a few minor imperfections. We hope you will love the fabulous location as we are focused on providing a clean and comfortable respite for you and your family.
Even with a thorough modernization the property is a historical home that is now over 75 years old. It has some eccentricities that reflect building standards and designs from the turn of the last century that lends to its charm as an older beach cottage. But even so, we hope that you will love our older and charming home.

Worked for us! The cottage is old, but in a great location. We were traveling with a dog, and this was one of the few pet friendly houses available.

It met my requirements. Probably would book again in the future.

I kind of knew what I was getting into after reading the reviews. I was looking for something reasonably priced for a short stay that was pet friendly. The pros for this property are that the communication with the owner and check in process was very efficient. There were absolutely no problems with that aspect of the stay.
I can’t stress enough the con for this property. It was filthy and smelled awful. I think the odor was mainly from the carpeting. There was a pretty hefty, in my opinion, cleaning fee and the dining table was sticky. The shower was very dirty with mold growing all over. I would have expected it to be cleaner, and it was just not.
And there was no fan in the bathroom. The lighting was very dingy and the stairs up to the deck and entrance were not in great shape. But you get what you pay for, renter beware. I will not stay again.

We originally planned to stay here 10/21-10/23 but the app glitched on us, and only was gonna be 10/22-10/23. I reached out to the host and they were happy to help and make accommodations for the times we wanted. They had availability to their home next to this one called the Pirates Lair. So communicating was really good. Overall my husband and I feel the home needs a lot of work and updating. The porch was falling apart and not safe, the railings weren't really nailed in and all uneven if my son or us were leaning on them to much we could’ve fell with the rails not being secured. I don’t know if the carpet is newer and was done wrong but when we had no shoes on we kept getting stuck in the foot with the staples and it hurt. The shower head was held by a nail or screws that wasn’t stable. The kitchen table almost flipped because the legs weren't even right my husband had to fix that. If you barely moved the whole house moved. We feel the home (Pirates Lair) needs a lot of work and updating to stay safely in. Space is good for a weekend getaway and enough space for that so that’s a plus. If home get attention and upgrades it would be a great place to stay.

The porch looks like it might fall down, interior is not much better. On the plus side it is close to the beach.

This property is fantastic and in a great location. Less than a block to beach access and close to all the Kitty Hawk amenities. Highly recommend a stay here.

Weekend trip
Went for a weekend trip and had a very nice visit. The location is wonderful, the beach access is about as good as it gets. The linens were clean and comfortable. The host was friendly and accommodating when we arrived a little early.

unclean beach cottage
If comfort and cleanliness are unimportant to you, then this may be the perfect beach cottage for you. Literally, the only positive remark that I can make about this property is its close proximity to the beach; there is a public beach access at the end of Starfish Lane. Upon arrival, my daughter sat in one of the chairs in the den and very quickly found herself covered with dog hair. Not only did we find the couch in the same condition, but it also smelled like a dog bed. We bought large towels to cover the furniture in order to sit on it. I slid the coffee table over in order to do yoga. There was food and other interesting items underneath where the table had been. I laid towels on the floor and put my yoga mat on top; the top of my mat had enough dog hair on it by the time I had finished that I had to hold up the mat and shake it all off. While down on the floor, I decided to take a peek under the couch; I found more of the same. When I went to make a cup of tea, I found not 1, but 4 rotten avocados in 4 mugs in the cabinet. At this, we decided that we would be eating out. We bought paper products rather than use any cups, dishes, or silverware in the house. (Beach towels are not provided.) Bath towels are not as pictured; they are quite thin. Bring pillows also, as the pillows provided are subpar. Fortunately, there is a TJ Maxx nearby, so we were able to purchase towels, sheets, pillows, and air fresheners there. (Belks and Home Goods are both in the area, too.) After purchasing all of these products, I decided to wash them before use. The dryer was full of sand. I am not just talking about the lent trap either, even though it was full of both lint and sand; there was literally sand setting in the bottom of the dryer. I washed the lint filter and cleaned the sand out of the dryer. Every single load that I washed had sand in it, and I was not washing sandy items. I was only washing the newly purchased products. I could go on, but I think I've made my point. We contacted the owner, who then wanted to see pictures. We sent pictures and asked to have the cleaning fee refunded because of the condition upon arrival. The owner never replied to us again. Cleanliness and comfort are important to us. You will find neither of those in this beach cottage.

Amazing!!
If you want a non-commercialized visit to the outer banks then this is the place for you. No frills or fancy. Just rustic living as close to nature as possible. Great hosts, community and experience. Thanks again! We will be coming back…

Stay away!!! Unclean and unsafe.
The property is dated as prior reviews said and we expected and brought our own chairs to sit on. The real issues are the cleanliness and safety. The front door deadbolt does not lock. The staircase and porch have no outdoor light and it was dangerous in the dark to go up and down the stairs.
We left the property shortly after getting there and checked into a hotel. There was a cockroach in the bathroom, a dirty sponge in the sink, ants on the kitchen counter, and candy wrapper on the floor. They obviously did not clean the unit properly.
The bathroom is sooooo small that sitting on the toilet with the door closed is uncomfortable even for petite ladies. Didn’t go near the shower but if also looked very tiny.
The host was curt and has not responded to our concerns regarding safety or pest problems.
The cheap daily rate very quickly changes when you hit the pay now button as they added all these cleaning fees. Very disappointed and very glad we were able to find a hotel to accommodate us.

Great location
Maybe it’s just me. However, both my guest and I were very surprised of the lack of maintenance on the home itself…photo is deceiving. Broken boards supporting railing on deck desperately needing sanding and fresh paint, locking gate to house my pups was impossible….had to tie it closed with a leash which became a pain. The deck boards needed to be nailed down. Windows were impossible to open and they were filthy both in and out. Must say owner sent someone over pretty quickly so that was a plus. We came to hear the ocean and feel the sea breeze. When it was time to do laundry, a terrible musty smell was coming come the washer and black filth all around the door. We went to buy bleach to hopefully help and it did but not much. Spent a hour running taking care of this gross issue. Maybe some people would not care but if you like cleanliness go somewhere else. Makes you wonder how clean the linens were. Another warning for dogs and kids, do not walk in the weeds. Can’t tell you how much time we took pulling painful hitchhikers, burrs off my pups and ourselves. Other that that spending time at the beach and dining on seafood is why we came….that was enjoyable. Sometime you need to take what’s available.🥴

Mini summer vacay!
Overall it was a wonderful trip we loved the location and the communication between myself and the owners of the house were amazing! They always got right back to me and answered all my questions! The only thing is the house itself needs some love. We absolutely had a blast though with the location being right there by the beach! We also loved the outdoor shower which also had warm and cold water!

Atmosphere
Location, location, location. We sat on the porch every night and listened to the ocean waves, watching the sun setting. Relaxing and peaceful. This is a small cottage that has a lot of history to tell, from all the beautiful wood to the ship like hardware. There was an ocean breeze everyday. Beautiful. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed just had to bring our swim suits and beach towels. The beach is so close, it took us longer to get ready then to walk over the dune. Thank you Kathleen and George for sharing your house with us.

Perfect Summer Vacation
This charming little cottage was perfect for our summer vacation! It is very close to the beach and had everything we needed. There was plenty of space for our family of four and dogs. We enjoyed the surrounding area and would definitely return!

Very nice experience. The house was small but we made it work. Being that close to the beach was great and was important to us. Look forward to next time.

Perfect OBX vacation
The location and proximity of this property to the beach is what makes it worth the price. The house was the perfect size for my husband, 2 kids and dog. We appreciated the hose under the house and walk-in shower for cleaning up after the beach and the cozy living room, bedrooms and covered porch for R&R. The kitchen is minimally outfitted, so if you want to cook anything other than the basics or for a group, bring it yourself (like a big pot for spaghetti). The ragged deck, unusable backyard and no dishwasher were a "miss" but we're minor cons overall.

It is an old house that has not been updated or renovated. The WiFi was wonderful. I had no problem doing my job remotely while we were there. The year round neighbors are very friendly and helpful. The house is very centrally located to tour the entire area of the Outer Banks. We visited everything from the Hatteras Lighthouse, to historic Manteo and the NC Aquarium, to the Wright Brothers Memorial, to the Currituck Lighthouse, Duck, NC and went on a Wild Horse Tour at the North end of the Outer Banks! We had a great time! I even did a little fishing at the Avalon Pier that is 5 minutes from the house. The location is incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed it. John Kibler

Clean and close to beach
Check in and out was a breeze. Loved being able to bring our two dogs and be so close to the beach. House was very clean and as described. The deck did worry me a bit due to some loose planks and broken gate. Enjoyed it, though!

Great time, some challenges
Cozy and rustic cottage in quiet neighborhood, steps from the beach, with several grocery stores and numerous excellent restaurants nearby. We had a great time and liked the older style of the place. Hosts respond quickly to questions. However, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with small children: porch had 2 dangerously rusted out chairs (one broke when our daughter sat it in, and the arm broke off of the other when we picked it up to move it), a broken gate, and loose boards that presented a tripping hazard. We let the owners know, so hopefully they will fix these problems quickly. Kitchen has plenty of cooking utensils but otherwise was not well-equipped: there were no drinking water glasses (we used the coffee mugs and wine glasses), and only 5 forks. Pots and pans were dirty when we arrived (greasy, lids unwashed, and one had sand in it) but everything else was clean.

Great Cottage in an excellent location.
The cottage was very clean and comfortable with enough pots and pans to do the cooking that we wanted to. There are also a lot of excellent restaurants nearby. It is a very short walk to the beach and you can see some beautiful sunsets from the porch. I highly recommend this cottage.

Cute place just steps from the beach
We only stayed one night, and it was about 32° so our beach trip was very short, but the house was super cozy! Our only hiccup was a short lived freak out over not receiving the code to get in until the evening.

Great location. Perfect for a long weekend as a family of three with our 2 dogs. The dogs loved the porch. Listing true to advertisement. Beds were very comfortable. Can’t wait to visit the area again!

Steps away from the beach
This house was perfect for the two of us. We also brought our dog, big plus for allowing pets! The owner was extremely nice and responsive. The house is compact but had everything we needed and the bed was very comfortable, always most important really. It's the third house in from beach access and I enjoyed walking just a few yards to enjoy the sunrise. I really don't have anything negative to remark on, the description online is also spot on.

don't get insurance
We had to postpone our arrival one night because our dog got very sick. Since, the dog wasn't coming on the trip, the insurance wouldn't cover us.

Beautiful beach
The house is very clean. Beds were firm and new and pretty comfortable. Lighting was lacking, we had to go buy a few bulbs to see in the kitchen. Could definitely use some updating. Don’t let your dogs walk around the property, full of cacti and sticker briars that get stuck in paws. The location is amazing though. The beach is so beautiful.
