About this house rental
This el viejo (old adobe) sits directly across the street from the beautiful Sul Ross State University campus and just a few blocks from downtown Alpine. This is a great basecamp while exploring all that Alpine and Big Bend have to offer. Marfa and Fort Davis are short drives away with beautiful scenery in between.
This location is not suitable for children under 12.
This old adobe sits on land, once part of the W.B.Hancock Ranch which was located just East of the original townsite of Alpine, Texas. After decades of witnessing cowboy and ranch life, this quiet old adobe was on land to be annexed into the town, after Mr. Hancock gave 100 acres for the establishment of Sul Ross State College on “Hancock Hill”.
Located across the street from the beautiful campus of Sul Ross State Univ. (and the Museum of the Big Bend), this old adobe guest house is easily accessible to downtown and restaurants. Only thirty minutes from Ft. Davis, or Marfa, or Marathon, and only an hour and a half hours from the Big Bend National Park, this is a great place to stay!
The living room has a small sofa and two sitting chairs. It has a tv with an Amazon Fire stick to login into your own entertainment apps. (Netflix etc.) Remember to logout before checking out!
Guests may park in the parking lot to the south of the property and access the front porch and side patio.
Call or text me at 432-386-8296.
The north facing porch has been converted into a second bedroom and does not have venting for ac/heating. However it is an adobe house with tile floors and the additional bedroom stays pretty close to the temperature of the main house. A fan and heater are provided for your comfort.
Please note the fireplace is for decorative purposes only.
The guest bedroom is an addition and does not have a vent. Please use the fan or heater provided to heat and cool the room.
Also beware that we have the property regularly treated for pests. However, if you leave food or crumbs out it is very likely to attract ants into the property.

The property was beautiful, spotless and so comfortable! We only stayed one night but definitely want to go back!

Never been to West Texas before. We had a blast. Alpine is adorable, didn’t know Sul Ross University existed! Saw deer right across the street from our adobe. Hiked Hancock Hill. Drove to McDonald Observatory - elevation 6500 ft. Saw bizarre art installations in the middle of nowhere outside Marfa. Excellent stay!

April was very helpful and repsonsive with any questions about the property, entering, etc. My friend and I loved being in the bungalow. It's beautifully and stylishly appointed and comfortable. Also, it's located in an adorable neighborhood with lots of nice yards full of native species. If you're into that, it's nice to go see. You can do a quick hike at Sul Ross up the back hill and there is a native cactus garden, as well. Nice to have a quick hike, just across the street. My only warning would be, the second bedroom (which gets west sun) does not have a window unit, nor is part of the central AC. They provide one standing fan. I suggested to April an additional fan to help circulate air. It was cool, rainy and breezy while I stayed in June. I'm not certain I would've been able to sleep in there if it would've been "normal Alpine hot." Also, you would need to leave the double doors open.... which wasn't an issue for me. But some would prefer more privacy. That's not an option for that room. Doors must be open to the living room while it's warm, at least. We very much enjoyed our stay and would certainly return.

This is a beautiful house that blends antique with modern styles. Big parking space, immediately across from the Sul Ross campus. Very comfortable beds, nice western decorations, and many books on the history of the area were available. Good communication with the property manager. Highly recommended and we will return!

El Viejo Adobe just became our favorite place to stay in West Texas. The home is clean, comfortable and conveniently located to enjoy trips to Big Bend, Marfa, Ft. Davis and the McDonald Observatory. The kitchen was equipped with everything needed for four people to enjoy cooking a meal at home. And the decor is beautiful! Also, to my delight, all the light switches are labeled!
April, the Property Manager, was fantastic. She was very responsive before our trip and checked to see if we were all settled in after we arrived. The information brochure was complete with all info about the house as well as the Alpine area. Thank you April!

We had wanted to check out Alpine (art galleries etc, well worth it) after It became our grocery/lunch spot before driving the rest of the way to Big Bend a couple of years in a row. The house was close to everything and so cozy. Very clean and well appointed. We could walk to everything!

Base camp for West TX vacay
We chose Alpine as our base for four days as we explored Alpine, Marfa, Ft. Davis, and Balmorhea. The home is located across the street from Sul Ross University where we walked in the evenings. The campus is beautiful and quiet. The home was clean and comfortable and had two different porch areas to enjoy. This was a great place for our family of three to call home for a few days!

Alpine weekend
We really enjoyed our stay. There was a problem with the a/c at the house we had booked and April was right on it. She had another location and everything worked out. Didn't see the Marfa lights but did see some birds. We would highly recommend staying at either of these properties.

Quaint Adobe Home
Adorable, great location. Not set up for 4 people, for example, no bowls. No toaster.
Not good for kids. Can’t see the TV from sitting on couch or chairs. Pretty pictures online but additional thought should be exercised to properly equip home for 4 guests.

Great House for Visit to Alpine
This historic adobe house is clean and fresh and has been beautifully renovated and decorated in a wonderful west-Texas style. We liked the neighborhood where we walked around and enjoyed looking at all of the interesting styles of houses. We also enjoyed being right across the street from Sul Ross University and visiting the very interesting Museum of the Big Bend on the campus. April is great at communicating all of the information we needed for a very enjoyable visit to this house and to Alpine.

Ambience!
We're from New Mexico, and currently live in deep south Texas, so this old adobe felt so comfortable. The decor is perfect! To make our Christmas stay even more enjoyable, April had added lots of holiday cheer to the house - both inside and out.
The beds are comfy, the kitchen is adequately stocked, and the house was very clean. We enjoyed sitting out on the little patio in the afternoon, and a couple of short hikes in the area. The location is great! We would not hesitate to book this property again!

Perfect location in Alpine!
A very nice house with a lot of charm. It’s an old home that has been well maintained. Cold AC, comfortable beds, clean. Be prepared to use your own apps to watch TV (Prime, Etc.). Great parking beside house. Highly recommend.

A real find: quiet adobe hideaway in the countryside
This is one of, if not the best, VRBOs we have ever rented. It is spacious, quiet, yet conveniently close to Santa Fe, Taos, Los Alamos, Bandelier and all the other north NM attractions. A particular delight was the bedroom with double private closets and a super king-sized bed. Lots of cool night fresh air, too. We can see why many of the Casa visitors book for weeks at at time.
