We had a lovely weekend away at Dani and Paul’s place. The bed was very comfortable and the house was outfitted in a charming way. We also had a nice visit with Dani downstairs in the shop and purchased some nice soaps! A notepad/book with info like the wifi password would be helpful for guests as we had to call and leave a voicemail for that info. Some things added to the kitchen (eg. flat baking sheet) would also be helpful, and there was no dish soap provided. Overall we had a great time and the price was unbeatable!

This property was a perfect place for me to stay in the Rideau Lakes. Only 10 minutes from Portland and easy drives to other cottage and fishing hot spots. Great location in the sleepy town of Newboro which has easy access to restaurants, hikes and local shops including Dani’s own handmade soaps below the Lockmaster house. I highly recommend this accommodation for its excellent location, many amenities, and super-friendly and helpful hosts.
I would definitely stay here again.

Easy access to the cottage from the main road. Perfect size one bedroom for a couple. Great deck to relax on. It was special to stay in a historical building with modern upgrades (A/C, shower, new windows, etc). Would love to visit again. Owners are helpful and easy to communicate with. Beautiful area with so much to explore.

It was a pleasure of having had the opportunity to stay in the historical Lockmaster’s House! From the moment we walked through the door, we were greeted with exceptional hospitality, a mesmerizing aroma from the soap shop located downstairs, mixed with the cottagy scent of cedar, and a cozy atmosphere. Dani was very helpful and informative. We enjoyed the location as it was close to the towns we planned on visiting. We will definitely be coming back!

The Lockmasters House was the perfect spot for a little getaway in cottage country. We enjoyed the history of the place, explored Newboro and the area, watched boats go through the locks. And Westport is just down the road - great spot for breakfast! We'll be back!

An absolutely delightful property. Great location and full of character. Bathroom was very clean with lovely white towels and handmade soap from the lovely shop downstairs. The bed was very comfy and with lovely crisp bedding. We met Dani who was very friendly.
HOWEVER a few small issues did impair our enjoyment of the house: some of the appliances (toaster, kettle) are old and poor quality, the shower head is makeshift, many utensils in the drawers are sticky or unwashed, no ice trays, very old and unappetising-looking selection of spices, salt and pepper, meagre remnants of tea and instant coffee, and an already half-used tiny tube of shampoo are provided “for guests to use”, and an old house book with out of date information scribbled out, which did not feel very welcoming. This was a lack of attention to detail, and the feeling that the house needed a deep clean (especially inside the cupboards), made us feel less cared for, as guests, than we have in other holiday rental properties where the hosts really have gone the extra mile in taking care of us. It is a shame as the house is wonderful.

Conveniently located for exploring the area. Westport, Perth, and the Newboro Locks are all very close.
I enjoyed my stay.

Our stay here was very nice. Love the little soap shop she has here on the property. The trail pass was excellent bonus. Would recommend this place to others

This was a wonderful experience. Our hosts, Paul and Dani , were helpful and accommodating. For a small fee, Paul delivered a canoe for our use on the multiple lakes nearby (not even 2 km away.) When we arrived, Dani was there and even offered to walk our dog while we unloaded! There are two excellent restaurants nearby and quite a few more in Westport just 10 minutes away. We spent our mornings and evenings on the deck watching deer in the field across the way. This was the peaceful respite from urban life we were looking for.

The house was cozy and comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bed was super comfy also. We enjoyed chatting with Dani. She was so friendly and a great host. The little soap shop down below is so cuteand their products are amazing. Would definitely stay here again.

It was fantastic, quite neighborhood, aside from the traffic and the weather there was no noise. Very peaceful.

We loved our time here. On the first night we saw a herd of 20+ deer across the road. I walked daily down to the lake and met some lovely and friendly people. Dani has an amazing business on the main floor and I highly recommend her products!

Who knew you could stay in an 1863 Lockhouse yet have all the conveniences of home? Perfect size & perfect location to explore the area. Great hosts, made sure we had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend.

On vrbo website this lock master's house looked charming. Indeed from the outside it is! Inside is quite rundown, there are some artistic touches and the bed was comfortable. However, for over 80 year olds there are some challenging elements: handrail loose, uneven steps and floors etc....

Comfortable property, good location, but on a busy road although the traffic reduced greatly in the evening. Kitchen utensils and crockery were below expectations.

Dani was incredible and very easy to communicate with. The property itself was very clean and it was really a joy to stay in a historic property. It's perfect as a homebase to explore the region.

The lockmaster's house is a really nice place to stay; very clean, cozy, with all the accommodations you need. Even if the air conditioning is upstairs in the bedroom, it was fine for us.

Overall, we had no complaints. Little things that others have mentioned, I would concur:
A big duvet instead of blankets would have been great, along with crisp, white sheets and plump pillows. There was an attempt to make the bathroom pretty by adding lovely soaps. Would have loved to have seen plush towels (extra ones as well, all of the same colour, preferably white). There was noise from the highway, but not terrible.
Wifi was great, and the location is wonderful-close to Westport and a half hour from Perth.
I don't object to doing and putting away the dishes before leaving, but that means that I am relying on the person before me to clean the dishes properly. Please keep that in mind when you are there.
Although it wasn't an issue, the photo in the advertisement did not show the store below. Again, it wasn't an issue.
I didn't love the idea of having to take my garbage with me when I left, but it wasn't a deal breaker.
With some decorating tips from a professional, better lighting and improvement of the linens, this would be a superior place to stay. Still, would return.

I found the property was clean but the fact that it is on a busy road takes away from the relaxation of the place. We were not told about the soap shop below and we had 3 different people asking us about the shop. Also the bedding needs to be upgraded , a duvet as opposed to blankets for cleanliness and comfort. It would be nice to include in the guest binder some info about the area , where to swim, rent a kayak, restaurants etc...

We had a brilliant time in the lock master’s house. Perfect location to explore the area and spend cosy nights indoors. What more do you need.

This was such a great little getaway and we were able to explore the different hiking trails, antique stores, and live and breath in nature. The Lockmaster is right on the highway, but that didn't bother us. The time of year was just perfect and the colours were beautiful. Paul even came and checked up on us during the stay to make sure everything was perfect. Will definitely go back.

The check in was simple and the hospitality was impeccable. We had a lovely time and it was perfect to get out of the city. Be prepared to entertain yourself as the TV does not support HDMI. The WIFI was fast and reliable and we had no issues using our phones. The listing says there is a grill on the property but the BBQ needs an upgrade. I'd say brush up on your charcoal skills. Had ample wood for a camp fire complete with an axe and kindling. All in all we would go again and this is a beautiful, clean, and cozy location with wonderful owners. Enjoy your stay.

We really enjoyed our time at the Lockmaster’s cottage. Cute space with enough kitchen tools to prepare simple meals. Located on a main road so easy to find and to go on day-trips. Would stay again!

Loved the property and discovering the villages, lakes and history in the vicinity. Paul gave us great suggestions for how we could spend our time in this great part of Ontario. Thanks for a fantastic stay.

The experience does not only speak of the property but also the location of the Newboro Lock. It is a simple and quiet place meant simply for relaxation with no sound of the television. It certainly gave us the chance to know more about history.

Charming: Yes, this is the real deal, the 1860's lockmaster's house moved from the Newboro lock about a kilometer away. Don't miss the prints of the July 1, 1867, front page of the Globe, or the call to arms of American revolutionaries on the opposing wall of the bedroom.Period charm has its drawbacks, alas. Access to the house is by a flight of stairs, as is access to the upstairs bedroom (the only one). Not ideal for those with mobility issues. Clean: In 2020 extra effort has been put into sanitizing the cottage. We did our best to clean up after ourselves. You'll be expected to take your trash home or to the dump in Portland. Quiet: Past guests have complained about noise from the main road. These guests can't have spent any time living in a city. Peace and quiet is plentiful, especially at night. Traffic is light on County Road 42 even in the daytime, though not light enough that we would recommend backing out from the driveway.Nobody is coming to this part of Ontario for the nightlife, but do bring your own entertainment for wet days (such as a personal device or board games). The TV/VCR has no cable connection or antenna. The collection of VHS tapes in the drawer is idiosyncratic and not all the tapes are still in playable condition. Contact with owners: Paul and Dani can be a bit slow to respond to phone or text messages (cell phone service is a bit spotty where they live, apparently). Give them at least 24 hours to respond. Fortunately we had no issues needing urgent attention during our stay.
