About this house rental

Built in 1944, the Hobbit house is one of the first sustainable homes in California ... designed and built by "green" architect Carr Jones. All of the building materials were reused and recycled: all bricks are reminiscence from the 1908 earthquake in San Francisco, the wood was repurposed from old ships, and the metalwork is the product of old anchor chains.

The home is comfortably appointed with Jones’ trademark brickwork, unique roofing, radiant heated floors, and rusticated lumber. A truly spectacular example of amazing craftsmanship and creative design sensibilities.

The house is uniquely divided into two spaces, separated by a charming courtyard and pool. In the main house {2 story}, you will find the master loft bedroom, kitchen, with an open area downstairs. The second one-story building (1100. sq ft) has two bedrooms, a sitting area, with 2 fireplaces. and 1.5 bathrooms.

It was everything that I had previously read about. It was cute, private and roomy. We enjoyed the pool and our adult children loved the pool table. We were in town for our son’s wedding in Davis. Not a far ride and close to stores needed in Sacramento to prepare for the wedding. Host was responsive and nice. Very accommodating. Will stay here again! The history and architecture is beyond words and pictures.

This is a truly unique home and just as described by the hosts. The history of the home and architecture are fascinating and the owners have done a lovely job showcasing it's character and history. The layout worked well with the main house (loft bedroom) and the pool house (2 bedrooms). They provide everything you need to be comfortable. The pool and deck area are beautiful and a perfect spot to cool off and enjoy a group meal. Overall a wonderful experience!

What a charming quirky hobbit house! Loved the details that tie into the house’s history and all the unique antiques. The courtyard was a family favorite. Loved the pool, big outdoor dining table, and the cozy seating area and fire beneath the creeping fig covered pergola. The garden area was beautiful and was frequented by red dragonflies! We felt like we were in our own little world. We would definitely come back! Thank you Julie for being so helpful and responsive and sharing your house with us!

I grew up in Land Park on the same street of this home. Four generations of our family walked to high school on the street and always dreamed about going inside of the beautiful hobbit house. When I saw it available on Vrbo, I was excited and so was the entire family! We had a lovely stay, the host was very gracious, we went for a walks in our old neighborhood along the tree line streets and looked at our formers homes reliving memories. Really enjoyed reading the book about the architect also. Thanks again Julie for everything!

We went with another family and having the two houses was awesome. The pool table was great for the guys while we hung out in the evenings! I can't wait to come back when the weather is warmer and take advantage of the pool. Seriously obsessed with this spot. 3 couples could stay here and have lots of room with privacy and multiple common areas.

I cannot say enough positive about this property. The home is so charming. The manager is very responsive. The energy inside and out is peaceful and happy. The master bed is one of the comfiest I've experienced in a rental home. I would stay here over and over again.

So cute, old architecture, beautiful neighborhood. Loved the courtyard, comfortable seating outside. Pool cold and no working hot tub. But guest house awesome and set-up fabulous for small family get-together. Loved this house :.)

We had a wonderful time staying at this home for the weekend! The only thing that bothered us were the shackles hanging from the fireplace and prison peepholes in the cupboard. We knew it was an “artistic” choice, but it still made everything feel a bit creepy. We didn’t see any pictures or mention of this before arrival. However, the rest of the house was beautiful and we loved the pool table and swimming pool!

Three days in this beautiful "Hobbit Home" the details of homes, from lighting, walls, pool table and built in steam room to the courtyard gave my group a lot to talk about. It was fun and relaxing; close to everything we wanted to do. We were able to get Doordash and Instacart for things we needed. Beautiful neighborhood with a very central location. Highly recommended location. My partner and I had the main house and our friends and family had the other home, we couldn't be more pleased about privacy. It's a perfect vacation home. We miss being there already.

A cozy, unique gem of a house! Old rustic charm with enough upgrades that you don’t feel stuck in the dark ages. The back house has 2 bedrooms and a sitting room, which is where we set up the blow up mattress that was tucked into a closet so that each of my teens could have their own space—perfection! Good communication with owner despite VRBO app glitching. Thanks again for the wonderful stay, Julie!

My favorite part was the outdoor space. The courtyard was a great place to retreat and read a book. Close to grocery store and conveniently located. Beware tall people, low ceilings. As an older home it was somewhat drafty. Luckily our weather was mild. Overall this was a great place to stay and I really enjoyed it.

Four of us stayed in this enormous home. We had a very relaxing stay, with much of the time spent in the pool. This home has 2 sections. There is a loft bedroom in the main house and there is a separate house out back with 2 bedrooms. Both houses are separated by a pool and spa. Pool was perfect temperature, no heat required. The hot tub you can heat and it warms up pretty quick. The directions to use the spa and pool are a bit intimidating, but nothing you can't manage if you know how to read and follow the steps given to you. House did have a/c, but we were happy opening up all the windows upstairs at night. The pool table is a nice touch. My kids were very happy with this place, as they got the house out back for themselves. Very quiet neigh orhood, and we had no problems ordering uber eats with front door service from the many different restaurants close by. Only thing missing was a BBQ, but again, we were lazy and ordered out most nights and ate by the pool! Overall, we really enjoyed this home. Thank you for having us.

The photos of this Carr Jones home speak for themselves. The main house, courtyard with pool/hot tub/steam, and guest house are decorated beautifully and make for a most memorable and enjoyable stay. The owner had fresh flowers arranged in the living room and courtyard. In addition, the owner provided a useful guide to both the home and neighborhood. We loved walking through the neighborhood and were just a few minutes' walk from outstanding bakeries, coffee shops, and restaurants. It was a treat to stay here with family when in Sacramento for a wedding.

It is located in a beautiful established Sacramento neighborhood. Close to the heart of the city but has a feeling of being removed from it all. The home is a work of art. Carr Jones left his unique style for generations to enjoy and we truly did. It is furnished beautifully. We are so happy to have enjoyed the home and plan to return.
