Guest Access:
This island cottage is a single family home on a half-acre lot centrally located on Dauphin Island. Guests will enjoy the entire home to themselves, as well as the large backyard that backs up to a beautiful forest of tropical vegetation. A grill, fire pit, and beach toys are there for guests to enjoy.
The Neighborhood:
The 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary is a 5-minute drive (1.8 miles) from the steps of this island cottage. The sanctuary is a well-known destination for birdwatchers in search of one of the hundreds of species that live in and migrate through the sanctuary year-round, such as herons and pelicans. Visitors can take a walking tour though the palmetto palms where they can experience the birds in the lush native flora and fauna of the island.
Just past the bird sanctuary is a popular boat launch on the island, where anglers launch their boats sunrise to sundown, as well as the Mobile Bay Ferry (2.1 miles away). The ferry, which departs every hour and a half during the day, transports passengers to the historic Fort Morgan located across Mobile Bay, only 30 minutes from the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The Dauphin Island Estuarium, an aquarium that is home to more than 100 different species of native Alabama marine life, and the historic Fort Gaines, where you can find guided tours of the 1821 fort that protected Mobile Bay during the Civil War, are both located less than 10 minutes away from the property. There are three public beaches on Dauphin Island — the East End Public Beach, Bienville Beach and the West End Public Beach. The closest beach access to the cottage is Bienville Beach, which is located about 1 mile away from the home.
With the almost dozen restaurants and snack bars on the island, there’s no shortage of local fare and fresh seafood. Almost every menu on the island serves up the freshest seafood in the South, including freshly caught snapper, grouper, oysters and crab. During the summer there are outdoor movies shown on the West End of the island, and the Dauphin Island Fishing Rodeo during July brings more than 75,000 spectators to the island for a weekend of fun and sports fishing.
Even though the island is small (it’s only 14 miles long and less than 2 miles wide or less, in some areas), it offers an endless amount of activities for vacationers, including an 18-hole golf course and endless water activities. Boat, jet ski, stand-up-paddleboard and kayak rentals are available, as well as sunset cruises and beach access to most of the 17 miles of powder, white sand beaches that wrap around the island. These offerings, in addition to deep-sea fishing and diving, make this Gulf Coast sanctuary one of the top destinations for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the gulf.
We hope you enjoy your stay at Maldanado and enjoy exploring the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast during your visit!

The house is in a very peaceful area. It is well stocked, however, it was a seek and find game to figure out where everything was located.
I was a little confused at check out because the checkout directions on the refrigerator differed from the checkout directions emailed to me.

This home is very beautiful and well kept. The home was properly stocked it wasn’t over decorated the sheets was so soft and comfortable the best pillow literally I have ever slept on. We didn’t need any amenities as there was plenty and everything was name brand it wasn’t cheaply thought of they even have Joe bean bags in the kids room for the guest.
The place was literally set up like a home a way from home the water pressure was perfect the cleanliness was amazing the communication and respect from the property manager was very well only issue that I am aware of is the property changed systems so they wasn’t receiving my messages they would have to go back to the old system they used other than that the property manager was highly respectful.
I do recommend a ceiling fan in the sun room for comfort how ever the sun room is perfect size and is connected to the laundry room and the laundry room does have its own door and it’s got a/c in it- how perfect is that! Thank you to the property manager as well the cleaning staff.

The house was very nice. We encountered only a couple issues. 1. The front door handle was a lever style, rather than a round knob. My dog can open those, and the door doesn’t lock from the inside. Our first night there, while we were out to dinner, my dogs escaped. Luckily, we found them and they were only filthy and exhausted. For the rest of the vacation, we had to lock the dogs in a bedroom or bathroom. 2. The lawn needed mowing.
Otherwise, we were happy with the stay.

We were four adults come to the Island for bird watching and relaxation. Cottage in the Pines was perfect for us. The screened-in back porch was our favorite place to sit and watch the birds, especially Bluebirds. We enjoyed watching bird banding, a Market in Green Park and a plant sale. Always a good time on the Island. We hope to stay at Cottage in the Pines again.

A lot of attention to the comfort of the guests. Beautifully decorated. I had a question and I was contacted quickly with the answer. I would recommend this place.

This house was clean and for staying “off-beach” was a great proximity to most things. The place is really too small for a large group (we had 9 adults). Adults can’t sleep 3 to a king bed actually. The trundle mattress would only be comfortable for a child. The bathrooms were tiny and the shower stall in one was way too small and made taking a shower miserable. The kitchen lacked a lot of utensils and cookware we needed. Take bug spray for mosquitoes if you want to be outside. I did enjoy walking my dog in the neighborhood and the house cooled well in the main part but was a little warm in the bedrooms. We loved the big dining table and couch for gathering in the great room so that was a plus! We enjoyed biking up to the Art Gallery, Little Red Schoolhouse, Lighthouse Bakery and centrally located places. The middle public beach was awful to get to from its parking lot and the island needs to replace the boardwalk; so even though it was a short biking distance we ended up driving to West End all the time which was less convenient.

Front door still didn't lock, had to pile furniture in front of the door, unsafe rug in living room, leaking shower, ceiling fans horribly dirty, etc...

We had a nice stay. The house was as expected. Very nice! Only issue was a very loud, late concert somewhere nearby that we weren’t aware was happening. Not the fault of the property or owner. :)

Great family vacation
This was the perfect setting for our family vacation! Everything was as pictured on the website and was very comfortable! We especially enjoyed the screen porch in the back of the house and the wooded area in back. The only downfall was there was only 1 fry pan, which made cooking breakfast a bit time consuming, but we managed. The binder that gave suggestions of different things to do and places to eat was very helpful. We would recommend this quaint cottage.

Highly reccomend
The house was very clean and decorated nicely, we are all impressed. My son and I walked to the house from putt putt golf, which is about a 10 min walk, and we felt safe walking when it was evening/nighttime. We used the bikes, beach chairs, a beach unmrellla, extra linens and extra towels that were provided. We enjoyed riding bikes in the area, the neighbors were nice. I highly reccomend and would absolutely go back.

Amazing vacation
We love DI – this is our third visit to the island! It was our first stay at this house and it was one of the best VRBO experiences we have ever had! The house was very near perfect for what we needed. So many little details that were taken care of - Beach chairs, cruiser bikes, extra linens, plenty of towels, etc... The location is wonderful. The house has plenty of space for the five of us. Screened in porch was my favorite room in the house! ❤️❤️

House itself was really great. Make sure you have the code to get in the door in your paper work took us about 20 min once we got there cause I didn't have it. The only reason I gave the conditions of the property not excellent the grass was not cut it really took away from the beauty of the place. But i would rent again the house was that nice.

Wonderful Little Cottage!!
Beautiful cottage, the pictures didn't do this little house justice! It was fully equipped with everything you would need, even had new cruiser bikes, beach toys, and more! Only issue we had was with the internet on the front room television, that was never reaolved. The property manager, Karin, was very nice. Only other issue was the across the street neighbor, she was very hateful and we got the impression that she doesn't really care for African Americans....her problem though. Otherwise the house was well worth the stay and very comfy.

We decided to take a long weekend for some down time and Kayaking. This property was perfect! Everything was clean well stocked, close to the water and restaurants. We would stay again.

Great Getaway
We enjoyed our stay! The house was clean and perfect for our little family. The kitchen was well stocked and the host was super helpful with recommendations for our first visit on the island. I would recommend packing the groceries you need, as the nearest store is pretty far. The door issue mentioned in a previous review was fixed and we felt very secure. There was some construction noise in the neighborhood, but we wake up early.
The house is within walking distance from a very cute art gallery. We also enjoyed the Audubon Bird Sanctuary even though it was very chilly.
We would recommend staying here, especially for someone who cant do the large amount of stairs like other houses on the island.

Only one complaint
Beautifully renovated home that was so clean and comfortable. The only complaint we had was that the door had a padlock, we were given the code from the property owner, but the deadbolt on the door did not align with the doorjam so there was no actual way to lock the front door, and anyone who knew the code could enter the home.
My husband and I and our 3 kids ended up sleeping in one room (the one with bunk beds) with the bedroom door locked. We contacted the property owner about the issue as soon as we arrived to the home but he advised he was not sure if he would be able to get anyone out there that day to look at it and then we never heard back. So as long as the door lock gets resolved, the home is incredibly beautiful, clean, comfortable, and in a nice quiet neighborhood. There was a binder on the table by the front door full of ideas for things to do and restaurant reccomendations. Very nice place!
