About this house rental
Welcome to pure AZ relaxation in the High Sonoran Desert. Long Shadows, "Sombras Largas," straddles the intersection of Wilderness and Urbanity. It is an elegant, organic, passive solar dwelling built of 18- inch-deep adobe block walls, rough-sawn wood, vaulted beamed & shiplapped ceiling, hand-made Mexican tile floors and rooms finished with Venetian Style Plaster walls. Pella windows and doors frame the startling vastness of the Tonto National Forest. Literally, walkout your door into blue-sky views of the Tonto's Skull &New River Mesas, BLM lands and the 2200- acre Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Wade in Cave Creek's waters & precious riparian area, explore Indian ruins, petroglyphs and trails on foot or bike. Guests visit to hear the sing/song of dove and quail, to watch cloud-shadows float over the rugged landscape. Inspired, people have left poems and guest-book entries about their experiences here-hikes, rainstorms and their personal interactions with 'Nature.' This is a High Sonoran Desert place, a place like no other, to breathe, walk, rest, read, watch the Milky Way, cook and dine. Paths surround the entire perimeter of the property with enticing places to eat alfresco. A sunlit SE facing covered porch allows one to stretch-out and nap on winter- sun -warmed bancos (see photos). The kitchen looks out onto Elephant Butte -Cave Creek riparian area at its base- not a human structure in site. A sitting area on West is completely private, not a human dwellung in sight. The Adobe is well stocked with utensils, handblown Mexican glassware and attractive dishes. Thick stone patios grace the main entrance and the primary bedroom. Take NOTE: NO TV &, NO SMOKING; YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY DESERT FOREST! No poisons have ever been used on the property since it was built 40-years ago.More than 4 guests requires owner’s permission and an additional charge of $50.00 per night per guest. An extra bed can be placed in the studio. WIFI: You will make your smartphone/ WiFI supported calls and have "unlimited" internet access via satellite. ( On your phone, go-to 'Settings,' then 'WIFI calling'; you will be prompted to put in a 'physical address'. Do this BEFORE you arrive .) You can FaceTime, Stream or Zoom if you like. The doors have NO KEYS. Don't bring your diamonds etc. There is always potential for a fire evacuation. We do NOT LOCK!. The firefighters must confirm a dwelling is empty of people in the event of fire evacuation and would, otherwise, need to break-in to verify. The property is less than 4.5 miles North of Cave Creek under the Tonto Forest mesas and is off an unpaved, narrow, GATED, winding road that hugs a mountain on one side and an arroyo on the other. Heat is a combination of passive-solar, German-ceramic WESO clean wood burning stove, Rumford fireplace, Beehive fireplace, quiet oil -filled heaters and fan -driven electric heaters. There are requirements for setting a fire so please inquire as there are no-burn days and we are in a drought. The owner will lay an occasional fire for you upon request of fragrant mesquite, oak and juniper. Contact me If you have any concerns at all and to be certain this is your style of vacationing before booking. Important: One old dog lives on the adjoining property with the host; they live in a casita one hundred feet away up the canyon. Both dwellings are very private and surrounded by Botanical Garden Award Winning Desert landscaping. A Gyrotonic Studio located in the Adobe occasionally hosts a single or duo private Gyrotonic Movement Eduction class. The Studio is accessed via a private entrance.

Other than the unpaved road, the experience of staying in the Sonoran Desert is a must for those wanting to find a place slightly off the beaten path. The night sky, stars, and glow of city lights were a stark contrast to your typical Phoenix stay during Spring Training. Even the unpaved road was an experience - seeing pack of Javalina's, night owls, and other wild life when returning after dark.

Awesome quiet adobe
We thank Melissa and her loyal companion, Red, for sharing their home with us in sech an incredible piece of the universe. Truly spectacular place! We were in awe and it's our new favorite VRBO.
We felt at home in the adobe as soon as we walked in. It had everything we needed and so much more. This is truly a great place to unplug.......literally!
Our host, Melissa, is a wonder herself. Thank you for all that you do and have done to protect, preserve and share your unique adobe and surrounding land.
We hope to return very soon.

Mezmerizing Mesas
I hesitated to review this property because of selfish reasons. If you read this listing I promise you've discovered a wonderful gem; something that can not be replicated anywhere in the southwest. Your host Melissa is charming and offers real insight and knowledge about the area that is first hand. Western novel worthy the casita and home are landscaped wonderfully and the interior is decorated with care and attention to detail. It is clean and spacious, a great place for a family or couple. There is not a minute of the day that you won't look out at the surrounding mesas and be impressed. Take advantage of the hiking in the areas and enjoy the abundant wildlife, history and epic landscape.

Stunning views and garden!
One of the most beautiful spots we've stayed. The adobe house was charming, clean and well stocked. Gardens surrounding the house were gorgeous! Comfortable seating and tables were provided in different spots to enjoy dinner al fresco or watching the sun come up. Stunning views in every direction! We took beautiful hikes from right outside the living room door. Melyssa was a lovely and thoughtful hostess and made us feel very comfortable. This is a one-of-a-kind home and setting - we have terrific memories here and definitely want to come back. Thank you again Melyssa!!

Arizona Adobe Adorable!
I have helped do the interior design of adobe properties in the past so I was really excited when my husband booked this Vrbo. I knew that he would love the quiet and the passive solar aspects of the home, but way beyond that, is the charm of the sweet owner, and the beauty of the lot and the views of the Mesa and Saguaro forest beyond the canyon where it is perched. Speaking of "perched" this is a birder's dream vacation spot! We would wake up to birds singing and go join them outside as quail, chukar, and dove ate their breakfast laid out by Melissa. I had a hummingbird at my elbow for morning coffee, and we would play eye spy with a cardinal who was very curious about us. You could hear the birds call out to each other across the canyon, the birdsong and the light on the hills at either end of the day is magical. We made use of the hiking trails ( there are many interconnecting trails) in both evening and morning hours right off the lip of the backyard, and saw deer grazing, and maybe some javelina track there too!The interior of the adobe is very comfortable and tastefully decorated with local paintings and sculpture from Melissa's talented friends.
The kitchen is well appointed, and the Chambers stove is the bomb! This place is decked out for a health conscious cook.
I would highly recommend this place for unwinding unplugging, and reconnecting . There is wifi but it would be a shame to use it much more than finding a good restaurant in Carefree. Bring your SUV as the road is not bad, but unpaved and narrow. That said, it wasn't hard to find at all, and Robert and I were so glad we did. Thank you so much Melissa! I wish we were there right now!

Perfectly secluded
Melissa’s place worked so well for our couple of days of enjoying spring among the cacti. The views are amazing, the kitchen is so very well stocked and Melissa is such a welcoming hostess.

Peace
Take a trip off the grid, mentally. The birds and the owner (Melissa) were wonderful hosts and create an environment we were truly were sad to leave, on both accounts. The house is warm and peaceful, poised with an expansive view. Steam rising off morning coffee, prepared old school, on the Chambers stove in a kettle and a press, satisfied.
The owner is as much as a delight as the coffee. We were wondering how the experience might go with the owner in the house on the immediate property. In the end, it was us asking her to hang out and join our conversations, and trying to figure out what we could do to contribute.
Such a find next to the National Forest is earned. A car will make it back down the dirt road which may intimidate those not used to serendipitous adventures (we hauled a 16ft. trailer). If you are are prone to whining, it might not be for you. As for us, we will go back!

true west
Melissa’s property is a very special place. A wonderful place to experience Arizona. With Tonto National Forest steps away, wonderful hiking at your doorstep. Leave your cell phone and technology at home, and embrace the beauty of Arizona.
The home is rustic with all the amenities you need.
As an artist, I will be back to paint the views!
