About this house rental
The Guaca-Maya house is a beautiful and unique renovated house with a large backyard in the center of Mérida.
Its decoration is a symphony of colors and pieces from the various countries we have visited. This space surrounded by natural life is created with love and detail, to make our guests feel comfortable and in harmony.
The house has three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Its large kitchen is fully equipped.
The terrace of the house is beautiful since it has a dining room and a living room with a very pleasant view of the pool and the backyard. One great advantage is that it has its own car garage.

We loved staying in this place. Couldn't stop looking at all the art and antiques. Enjoyed the patio, pool, courtyard, and goldfish pond in the middle of the house. Efficient kitchen, comfortable bedrooms and living areas. Immaculately clean. Immediately responsive host. Location was walking distance to many conveniences and super easy Uber got us everywhere else. Would consider staying here again.

Beautiful property that was designed and furnished by Mario, a true artist who had a passion for restoration.
We loved the colors and ambiance of the home.

This was a really beautiful house, so many different unique areas. Each room has its own ac, which worked really well. The main area can get a little warm, and does have open areas for mosquitoes to come in. Probably one of our favorite places to stay in awhile. About a 20 minute walk to the market.

By all means rent this house if you love:
- architecture/art/culture
- gardens/nature
- near to centro/museums/restaurants
The house was beautiful, pool refreshing, and owners responsive to a few mechanical issues that came up. It's 20m walk/US$5 uber to downtown (we gave up on walking due to the heat). We had no garage access but could park our rental car on the street no problem.
Important:
-The wifi failed to connect for us, but there is an ethernet jack so bring a CAT 5 cable for your laptop &/or a small wifi router for your phones/tablets.
-The bedroom situation: The three BRs each have gloriously fast-cooling AC. But the central interior area has an open-sky atrium centered over a beautiful indoor garden and fish pond. Lovely as it is, the living areas and kitchen can be as hot as the outdoors. Cooking is very challenging on hot nights. Also, mosquitos and other insects can get in. This was not a big deal for us, but we ended up wearing bug spray in the house.
-Two BRs open to the main house interior but one opens to the pool/backyard and has its own separate lock. The house has a back door to the pool/backyard with a separate key. For security, these doors should be locked at night. For safety the 3rd BR’s occupants must retain both keys overnight. So BR#3 must include a responsible adult who can operate the locks to free themselves in an emergency, ie no small kids or dependent elderly alone.
-There's no safety fence around the pool so watch your kids

We all enjoyed our stay at the house. We were able to find a grocery store and small local restaurants within walking distance from the house. After a morning walking in town it was wonderful to come back to the house in the afternoon and cool off in the pool and relax before the evening’s activities. The house had everything we needed. Salvador was very helpful and he recommended Daniel Tours for a day trip to Uxmal and a cenote. We really had wonderful day trip and wouldn’t have done that without Salvador’s recommendation.

Stunning Yucatan experience
This homage to the Yucatan culture is a must stay. It has everything to make your Mèrida experience comfortable and so much more. We could not stop admiring the decore, and attention to detail. It was a lovely mix of indoor and outdoor living. We talked to the locals through the dutch front door, had breakfast and coffee while listening to waterfall trickle, cooled off in the wading pool and cap the day off by swinging in the hammock amist russling leaves.
It was close to some of our favorite Panederias (bakeries) and many of the town squares where we could hang with the locals and have access to some of the best Mexican-Yucateca food we have ever had. The Mayan people's calmness, the neighborhoods and the food captured our hearts. We could not have asked for more from this magical location. We will be back.

Lovely house and Garden
The pictures are accurate, the house is beautifully decorated, the owner has collected a lot of interesting artwork. The garden and pool area provides a lovely quiet retreat. The house is very clean and very well maintained. The property manager, Salvador was extremely responsive and addressed the few small issues we had within hours. Gaby our cleaning lady was the best we have ever had, ever surface dusted and cleaned on a weekly bases. The kitchen is well equipped, new pots, lots of utensils and dishes.
The house is about a 20 minute walk to several grocery stores and the market at Santiago.
Because the house has on open air area over the fish pond there is no air conditioning in the main area of the house. This was not an issue in the first part of our stay, January to mid March, but as the temperature increased the house became quite warm making cooking uncomfortable. This is the only reason I haven’t rated the house as a 5. The AC in the bedrooms ensured comfortable sleeping.
Overall a very colourful comfortable home with fantastic staff that will go out of their way to ensure a relaxing stress free stay.

The Most Restful Place
We’ve stayed at many owner-rentals and this is our favorite. What a relaxing oasis. The kitchen appliances are in great shape and the beds were very comfortable. The best part is the courtyard and all the spaces to just relax with the sound of running water. There were even a couple of days when we preferred to stay in rather than go into town, that’s how nice it was! The neighborhood is so-so but we didn’t feel unsafe. It’s a good 20+ minute walk to the center. The hosts are super responsive and helpful, and we got great recommendations. It was nice to have a garage too. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

Wonderful house
We had a big group, 7 of us on some days, and the house fit us comfortably. We had a wonderful time in Merida, even though it is so very hot and humid in July (this coming from a girl living in south Texas) so the pool was a great relief. Here is what else might be good to know:
The house is as beautiful as the pictures. The listing is missing reviews on VRBO but you can see others for this house on 'the other website with listings'. All the appliances worked like a charm. The toaster oven was a plus since it cut down on the heat in the kitchen. Beds are comfortable and all the plumbing/water needs worked every time we needed it.
What might be good to know is that there is AC only in the bedrooms. The house is hot in other rooms. There are fans on the wall, but with 97 degree days, it can't help that much. We played board games almost every night (we were there 9 days) and we had to move furniture around in bedrooms to fit a table in there because it was too hot to sit in the common areas. This might not be a problem other months of the year, but I could not say. While staying in St Croix, Curacao, and Bonaire, the houses were the same - AC only in bedrooms - but there were trade winds that could blow through open windows.
The walk to town took us about 25 minutes, so consider that. We found Uber a better bet so we wouldn't arrive at restaurants so sweaty . I would say that we felt incredibly safe at the house and the city. Really, we did all over - the roads and other towns. (We went on to Akumal for 3 days and Holbox Island for a week.)
Oh, the garage will not fit a passenger van, but there was no problem parking on the street.
Merida is a great town and worth spending a few days or a week here. Yet, due to Covid, the Maya museum and the Governor's Palace were closed and some of the events we were looking forward to were not happening. We rented a van and spent a day in Sisal, a beach town; went to Vallodolid (loved it!); took a day to see Chichen Itza and a day to see Uxmal (don't miss it - better than Chichen Itza!!!) and spent a day seeing remote cenote's. There just wasn't enough to do in Merida that was open for the length of time we allowed. Hopefully, this will be better for future guests.
Lastly, I will add is that the property managers communicated immediately and thoroughly. We had a question about the oven, the front door lock, housekeeping, and water. We never waited and we were always taken care of. Kudos to Salvador!
