About this cabin rental
WELCOME to 822 Sugar Hollow
Welcome to your private mountain and lakeside retreat -- new, peaceful, and located on the southeast side of Watauga Lake with full access to a boat ramp and small floating dock. My three sons and I are happy to host you and hope you enjoy this special place as much as we do.
The three-level cabin was built in 2020, of hand-crafted wood and stone, with windows everywhere to let you take in the beautiful surroundings. There are three decks: one on each level and two that span the length of the home. The propane grill and fireplace are on the main-level deck, which wraps around to a front porch. On all levels, there are stunning views of the property, its ponds, streams running down to the lake, and the mountain ridgeline beyond.
From the cabin’s quiet decks, you can see the lake only a few hundred yards away, and you have semi-private, full-time access (along with seven other homeowners in the Sugar Cove neighborhood) to the Sugar Cove boat ramp and floating dock. Bring your boat, wave runners, canoes, or kayaks! Watauga Lake is one of the cleanest in the United States, and affords multiple recreational opportunities, including outstanding lake trout and bass fishing. The main public recreational area is about a 15-minute drive from the cabin. For hikers, the Appalachian Trail crosses Route 321 about twenty minutes’ drive from the cabin and numerous other trailheads are an equally short drive away. Roan Mountain and one of the most beautiful stretches of the Appalachian Trail is a 30-40 minute drive south and 4,000 feet of elevation up from where the cabin sits at about 2,000 feet.
Inside, the cabin easily sleeps 8-10, depending on who’s comfortable sleeping next to whom.
Upper Level: one king bed master suite with a balcony looking towards the lake and a 43” Smart TV, plus a queen-sized sleeper sofa in the separate, adjacent loft.
Main Level: second king bed master suite (new box springs & mattress in February 2022), with a spa tub and shower. The large, modern kitchen with granite countertops, gas fireplace, and a half bath powder room are located on the Main Level. The main level also features a Wi-Fi enabled 55-inch Smart TV. You can access the main wraparound deck, with gas grill, gas firepit, and outdoor seating from this level.
Lower Level: one (new, January 2022) queen bed with a twin XL trundle, and a new (March 2024) queen-sized bed. The Lower Level is a perfect retreat, complete with its own full bath, a sitting area with several chairs, and full laundry room. We also keep at least one sturdy sleeping cot on the Lower Level, in case of last-minute additions of friends and family to your traveling group. Access to the garage and lower deck is from this level.
You may not want to leave once you’re settled here, relaxing on one of the decks, listening to the creeks and springs alongside the cabin, which feed into a network of natural ponds and then down to the lake, or enjoying the new (February 2022) stone fire pit that my sons and I built with the help of a local artisan—no need to bring your own firewood, as the property naturally has plenty. If you do venture out, Elizabethton, Tennessee is a 30-40 minute drive west, and Boone and Banner Elk, North Carolina (including the Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain ski areas), are about the same drive times southeast and south, respectively. On the eastern side of the lake, there are also two wineries, Watauga Lake Winery and Villa Nove Vineyards (check for updated business hours).
Multiple marinas ring the lake. Pioneer Landing marina and campground, to the northeast, and Mallard Cove marina, to the west, are the closest to the cabin. Boats of various shapes and sizes are available for rent at Fish Springs Marina, a few miles west of the Hwy 321/67 intersection.

Wonderful stay. Everything was as promised. The home is beautiful. It is located very much off the traffic.

Our group all agreed we loved this place! It was a short walk to the boat dock and ramp. We spent most of our day kayaking, paddle, boarding and just floating in the secluded bay. It was so nice not to worry about boat traffic. The house itself was beautiful and had a well stocked kitchen, it had every utensil we needed. The master bedroom’s mattress was a dream. The decks were absolutely incredible and we spent most of our time outside, enjoying the view. We brought our own kayaks but there were several available for use. This home was secluded, quiet and felt like you were hidden in a treehouse among the tall trees. We loved everything about our stay! Thanks Dave!

The property was clean, private, and we had so much room inside the 3 story cabin. The wrap around porches allowed for beautiful lake and wildlife scenery in all directions. We brought our boat and enjoyed the beautiful Lake Watauga. It was a great weekend and we couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stay. We will definitely be back!

We had a great time! The cabin is very nice and we all had plenty space for 4 adults and 2 teens. The multiple decks outside and fire pit were also great places to spend time. We brought our own kayaks and the boat ramp/small dock is a few hundred yards from the cabin and made getting to the water no problem. One of our favorite parts of our stay was just how quiet it was both on the water and at the cabin. This part of the lake seemed to be a bit more remote than some areas and had little boat traffic while we were there. Boone isn’t too far away and we spent one day there as well. Try the Local for a great place to eat while in Boone. Parking can be a bit tight for three or more cars at the cabin but as long as you take your time backing down it’s perfectly doable. All and all we had a great time and would book again in a heartbeat. Thanks for a great trip!

Spent a few days with some old friends fishing in beautiful Watauga lake and just hanging out. House was very nice, clean and well appointed. We had access to the boat dock and ramp so it was super convenient to bring a boat. Thanks for having us and I'll look forward to staying there again some day.

Beautiful home with stunning deck views. Wonderful place to unwind and relax. We are not hikers or water people, but if you were, what a paradise. We spent most of our day on the deck just enjoying!

We enjoyed our stay at this beautiful cabin. Our kids loved having the stream and pond in the backyard. We grilled out several times and had a relaxing spring break. Would definitely consider coming back in the summer and bringing our pontoon. Cabin was very clean and had plenty of room for everyone.

We had a wonderful stay. The pictures are exactly what you get. Everything is very clean and new. Such a relaxing atmosphere. I 100% recommend.

We enjoyed this time in family during the winter. The house is totally equipped and comfortable. We stayed 35 minutes far from Beech Mountain that we enjoyed for snowboarding. We had fun at the balcony and barbecue area. The Boone city is 40 minutes far from the house and a lot of restaurants and options for shopping. All the descriptions and instructions were written down to help us during the stay and Mr David is very pleased to help and give us additional support if necessary. We hope to return during Summer to discovery this adventures too.

This property is absolutely beautiful. Everything you would need in cabin. Peaceful setting, relaxing, decorated beautifully. Owner is super responsive to text. Will stay here again for next Bristol race we attend or if we need a get a way.
About 35-40 minutes from track.

The house was very nice and far off the beaten path. If you're looking for privacy and a quiet get away near to lots of natural beauty, then this is your place. We got to explore the area and lots of boating on the amazing Lake Watuaga.

Beautiful, fully stocked cabin perfect for 7 adults and an infant! Could fit more too … We had many wedding events at Sugar hollow retreat and it was so easy to be so close to a remote venue. Limited cell service in the area but the written directions were easy to follow and the cabin has good Wi-Fi. Comfortable beds, warm water and lots of games to play. Overall excellent stay and would recommend to anyone!

We stayed here for the weekend and attended a wedding at Sugar Hollow Retreat. It was a pretty easy drive to the venue from the property. The house was clean and the host was very communicative!

We booked the house as wedding guests for Sugar Hollow Resort. Great location, the yard alone was entertaining for our kids (3 kids under 7). House had great amenities and the design/porches was well thought out.
Take a screenshot of check in info because there is no cell service for miles. Bring your groceries as well. And super minor complaint but bring your own pillows—some of the beds had super large memory foam pillows that were really hard to get comfortable on.

Very nice cabin!! Was very clean and comfortable. Great communication with owner. The only thing for us was a little more remote than we realized. But overall excellent property.

We stayed in this beautiful cabin with our party of 9 on our ski trip to Beech Mountain resort. The cabin is great, very well done, incredible woodworking details, very clean and comfortable, and just a 30 minute drive to the mountains. The proximity to the resort for the value was very good for us, we would definitely recommend and stay in the future. We now want to go back for a fishing trip, the lakes around there are beautiful.

We had an amazing time at the cabin. The house is beautiful, the property is secluded and the lake is crystal clear. I 100% would recommend this house and David was amazing answering all of my questions before and during the stay. House was clean, comfortable and very beautiful. Thank you!

This cabin was absolutely gorgeous and even more than what I expected. David was very responsive to all correspondence and went the extra mile to set up a beautiful artificial tree in the living room for us to decorate as well as hung garland from the beautiful porch railing. This home had everything we needed in the kitchen to make a tasty Christmas dinner. We usually bring coffee, laundry, and dish washer pods with us, but David had all of these things available to us. I can't say enough about this property, it is truly one of a kind.
The only thing I would point out is the distance from the cabin to any major grocery stores, restaurants, or entertainment is roughly 40 min to an hour. We were also there during a substantial winter storm which made travel times even slower. There is a propane tank and general generator on site so we never had an issue with power or hot water.
The furnished basement made for a great location for our 3 kids.
Thank you David and sons for allowing us to enjoy your home for the holidays!!!

Me, my husband and two sons and their wives and two kids met up here for a Thanksgiving/Christmas get together. Very nice house and amenities.

The house is amazing! It’s beautiful and very well cared for. The main deck was such a joy to hang out on, with the gas fire stand and watching a buck feed from the owner’s feeder. The beds were very comfortable (except for the loft pull out which felt like you were laying on the springs directly) but for a child it would be fine. The house is nicely stocked. It was so clean. The decor and build-out are stunning! The driveway is scary steep but we come from the city where we don’t have steep driveways. Our friends brought their fishing gear so we all walked to the lake and enjoyed it for awhile. I think anyone would love this home, the price was so reasonable and the seller was extremely attentive and easy to work with. I highly recommend this home if you’re looking for a rental in Butler and/or close to Sugar Hollow Retreat. You won’t be sorry you rent this stunning home!

We've been coming to this area for over 20 years and this is by far one of the best places we have stayed. Dave was wonderful to work with and definitely made every effort to make our stay comfortable and memorable.

A perfect spot to relax and truly get away from it all. There is everything one could want from comfy beds and plush towels to a well stocked kitchen. This property has plenty of places to gather and room to spread out for quiet time too. It's near by many activities but we never went farther than the lake. The architecture of the cabin and beautiful setting in the woods enhance the "hideaway" feel. We hope to come back soon!

Great cabin and location

The cabin was beautiful with impressive architectural detail. It was so clean and cozy with all the comforts of home. Props to housekeeping because this was the cleanest place we have ever rented. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare neals.
The beds were comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed the gas fire pit on the porch. The kids loved the neighborhood dogs who ran and played with them. We loved exploring the property, hiking, building a fire, and fishing with the kids from the dock. Some trouble with TV due to internet being slow but we weren't watching it much anyway. The owner was very responsive and I'm sure if we had brought it up he would have helped. We would love to come back again and our only wish is that this property had a hot tub!

We have rented many cabins in this area due to family living close by. This was by far the nicest, cleanest one! Any time We’ve stayed somewhere I always feel like I have to have my house shoes on… not here! Super clean! Even the 3 porches were super clean! Smells great! Very thoughtful owner as far as amenities go! Owner is very responsive. I would recommend this place to my closed family and friends!

We had a great time the house was like new and the pictures don’t do it justice. Well equipped with everything to cook with and coffee in the morning. David was very responsive and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

What an amazing place! Dave did a wonderful job with the design of the house which lead to a very relaxing environment. All of the amenities that you could need were provided, the house was immaculate and well stocked. We will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family as a must visit location. The lake is beautiful and access to it is only a couple of minutes away. I caught several nice bass, the water is clear and the scenery breathtaking. The was simply a wonderful experience and we look forward to visiting again next year,

Perfect!
We loved our stay! The cabin was perfect for what we wanted. We were looking for a place to relax and enjoy our weeklong trip and this was it! The cabin was clean, perfectly stocked with everything you could need and the bed on the main floor was super comfy! Loved sitting out on the deck and drinking our coffee in the morning or eating our lunch in the afternoons. We made a few trips to Boone, NC for dinner. Highly recommend trying “The Local” if your in that area! Boonies pizza is also good! We seen a bear in the road on our way back which was a highlight for me lol! Lots of deer around the property and the dogs around the cabin are very friendly. One of the English Pointers came to the front door just looking for some attention, her and my hubby became friends. We left nothing out for them to steal so they were probably bummed. Lol This cabin is definitely a 10/10! Thanks again for the awesome stay, hope to be back again one day!

The house and surrounding property is beautiful. It is clean and well-equipped. The owner is very attentive and responds to questions quickly. The driveway is not for the faint-of-heart, but you get used to it. We'd love to stay here again if we are in the area again.
