About this apartment rental
Below you will find details about our 1 bed/ 1 bath vacation home, Hamilton Cove 2-36, located in Avalon on Catalina!
Leave all the hustle and bustle behind and return to a slower pace of life, the island life. Our Hamilton Cove 2-36 condo is located in the exclusive, gated Hamilton Cove community. It's tucked away in a cove next to the main town of Avalon. You'll enjoy palm trees and an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean from the living space, bedroom and deck of our condo. At the horizon, you can see Los Angeles and in the foreground is a private beach. The community recreation center of Hamilton Cove has a pool, hot tub and fitness center for guests to use. The community also offers a playground, sand volleyball court, 18-hole putting green, tennis courts, croquet lawn, basketball hoop and picnic area for your enjoyment.
About 22 miles south-southwest of Los Angeles, Catalina Island is the southernmost island of California's Channel Islands. The Island is made up of two towns, the incorporated city of Avalon on the east end, and the unincorporated village Two Harbors on the west end. The island is just 22 miles long and 8 miles across. Outside of the two towns is a rugged wilderness of majestic beauty under the stewardship of the Catalina Island Conservancy. You can take a passenger ferry from Newport Beach, Dana Point, Long Beach or San Pedro.
We continuously update our place and recently purchased a king bed. The balcony is a delightful spot to have breakfast and watch the sunrise. And while the sun sets on the other side of the island, it is still incredible to enjoy the beauty of dusk. Our villa is accessed via five flights of stairs.

The view is incredible and the location is perfect. It’s just far enough away from town to have quiet but close enough for any and all quick trips. Kitchen was perfect for easy meals to eat on the deck and it was clean and well kept. Can’t wait to come back.

From the incredible and consistent communication to the accuracy of the listing, my family and I loved staying at this location. We had only a small snafuu with the golf cart upon our first night there but the communication with the host and their prompt response was so appreciated and top notch service. The place was clean and well furnished, the location was unbeatable, the views were unreal, and the value for the place that we got was incredible. We will definitely be making this trip an annual thing and we will be staying here again!

Great corner of Catalina, well appointed unit, fantastic hot

If you're planning a trip to Catalina, highly recommend staying at Hamilton Cove which is where this condo is located. It's a private community with tennis courts, a pool, hot tub, a golf cart, gym, and a small beach. My family and I absolutely loved our stay and plan on visiting again next year! The view from the balcony is gorgeous and the weather was perfect. There was a slight hiccup as the guard didn't have our trip information denying us entrance to the community. Thankfully, the property manager was able to take care of the issue promptly. The unit itself provides you with everything you need, however, I would recommend the property manager supply 1-2 more pillows and blankets for the sofa bed. I would also like to note the amount of stairs you have to take to access the unit. If stairs aren't a problem for you then you'll be just fine! My dad was on crutches due to knee surgery a month prior and navigated the steps delicately but it was slightly uncomfortable. Personally, the view makes the stairs worth it! Catalina Island is truly a slice of heaven.

Not sure if this property was in the middle of a facelift but one was sure needed. There was stuff being stored in the balcony that was unsightly and in the way, the kitchen range hood was missing, the coffee mugs all were stained…some TLC would do this place good.
Great location, tons of stairs as advertised. The community pool was just a short walk away and heated. The provided golf cart was easy to locate and fun to use.
The island has so much to offer.

Overall great spot and accommodations

When we arrived the door was not locked but the key was in the lock box. The bedroom window was open. We quickly learned the golf cart key was missing and so was the golf cart. Tried to call manager but cell service was very poor. My husband went to the guard shack and had service to call but could not reach anyone. I was able to send emails so I emailed the manager. We called a taxi to dive us around near the ferry to see if the last tenants left it in a rush for the ferry. The guard told us it was a orange cart, so as we were leaving the complex we located a orange cart on its way to complex and we stopped and found out it belonged to our unit. Apparently it was taken for service but no notice was left. The unit was not clean. There were clean sheets on the bed and clean towels. We used the extra sofa bed sheets to keep on sofa our untire stay as it was pretty gross and the coushions would not stay out on sofa. We have stayed in a different unit in the past and it was much cleaner and updated. This is a rental and it is treated as a rental by the owners. It is a shame with a little money and effort. The space could be spectacular as the views are amazing.

We really enjoyed our stay. The location was peaceful and had an incredible view. It is just a short golf cart drive from town. The condo and balcony were very pleasant and clean.
The condo we stayed in required climbing many stairs.
There is some maintenance needed in the apartment. It was wonderful to have the golf cart, but it is in desperate need of maintenance. The intense smell of exhaust from the golf cart made me worry for our health.

Great location on island with great view. This is really a one bedroom place with a couch bed in the very small living room. Place is in need of trim paint and floor repair. Golf cart is welcome but old and dirty.

Such a beautiful view and the grounds are equally stunning. A quick (and super fun) golf cart ride into town. Couldn’t have had a better time. This property is so great. And the balcony is spacious!! We used it a few times per day to soak up the beauty of Catalina Island!!!

Amazing View
Other than the stairs, this was the perfect location for our honeymoon. We could have used an umbrella in the morning because the sun is intense. We loved the golf cart that was included. It made trips to downtown Avalon so easy. We would definitely stay her again!

Absolutely Amazing
We loved our experience and loved the rental. The views and location were unbelievable. We loved being able to cook and enjoy the views from the patio. We loved the little private beach. We loved having access to the golf cart to explore the rest of the island. The condo had lots of space and a great layout perfect for a family of 4. The stairs were tough at times but well worth the other amenities. We also saved money renting this condo vs a hotel due to the ability to cook and the golf cart and it was much more spacious and comfortable than a hotel. Next trip to Catalina we will stay here again. We have also told all our friends and family as well. Beyond pleased with our stay.

Great Location
Loved my stay here, the check-in was super akward but the rest was amazing. Hamilton Cove has no cell reception so make sure to have your documentation printed out and in hand or you will be stuck. The guard gate will ask what unit you are in, if you don't know there will be a problem. Without reception, you will not be able to use your phone to retrieve the info from your email or the internet. You will also need the door code before you arrive because again, no cell reception. Once you get past this hurdle you will have a lovely stay! Make sure not to leave any food out, there is a huge ant problem. As long as you don't leave any food out you will be fine! I loved my stay and will absolutely return, it's basically glamping :)

As advertised
Beautiful view. Comfortable condo. It seems that most of the previously mentioned issues by other posters were resolved. One new one--ant investation in the kitchen. No food could be left out. Also, the patio is not private. It is shared/easy to walk between neighboring units--no problem if they are unoccupied.

I don't usually leave negative reviews, but I don't want anyone else caught in the same situation. This unit and the golf cart need some serious attention. This is the third time we've stayed in this unit, previously in 2017 twice. Positives: Check-in was a breeze and we really appreciated being able to get in early. Also, the view is unbeatable. We love being at Hamilton Cove. The new king-size bed was a nice surprise as was the new sofa. That being said, here are the negatives:The golf cart is in desperate need of service. Due to poor suspension or steering, we almost tipped the cart over in town when we hit a dip in the road. The roof is broken (pictures have been sent to the management company). The exhaust is horrendous. Maybe due to the need for service, or? It wasn't an issue before. The kitchen needs more glassware. There are 2 glasses, and otherwise it's just the plastic cups WE donated back in 2017. The coffee carafe was broken, but quickly replaced. There were ants EVERYWHERE. No dishwasher soap in the unit.Previously we were allowed to use the washer and dryer, soap was even provided. Not this time. Literally one of the reasons we choose to stay in a condo. The patio furniture is in serious need of replacement. The upholstery is disintegrated and ripped in several places. My son almost fell over in a chair that was broken, then the chair I was sitting in broke. I fell backwards hitting my head, my foot hit the table leaving a huge bruise, and I scraped/bruised my shoulder. I let management know, and there still hasn't been any followup. Hopefully the set has been replaced since then (Sept 8, 2020).I guess the sad part is that most (if not all) of these issues have been addressed in previous reviews. Hopefully more attention is given to the issues now.Catalina is home to me. We'll certainly be back but I will definitely do my due diligence in choosing another unit next time.

Beautiful view
The property had a beautiful view and communication with the property manager was easy and quick. This property is quite a hike from the main town of Avalon, so driving the golf cart into town was a must! The only issue we had was ants. We didn't cook at the property or store food that wasn't sealed, but by the morning after check in there was a huge trail of ants across the kitchen leading into the trash which eventually spread to our belongings stored on the bench in the living room. It was a bummer for such a nice property otherwise.

Disappointed
We have stayed at Hamilton Cove many times, however this property was not up to par. The toilet seat was broken, the shower valve was broken, there were no cleaning supplies in the unit. The washing machine was broken. The umbrella on the deck was broken. The golf cart was very dangerous to drive, wobbly and unsafe. The overall cleanliness of the unit was poor. Very disappointed.

Unit needs some maintenance
The Good
Incredible views from the balcony! This was where we spent most of our time.
The golf cart! It was fantastic to have access to the golf cart so we could zip into Avalon.
The beds were comfortable, and the fold out couch seemed new.
The Not So Great
The toilet was dirty (yuck!) although the rest of the place was quite clean. I think the cleaner just missed it. The toilet seat was extremely loose which grossed me out.
This unit needs a bit of maintenance and perhaps a new stove and microwave. The faucets in the bathroom were loose and one of the knobs in the tub just spun around freely. The bathroom sink faucets were wiggly and loose, but the one in the kitchen was really hard to turn on and off. I think all this is caused by hard water.
The coffee table had wiggly legs and bits of the stone top were cracked off.
The check-in process was really messed up! Our names were not at the gate, so we had to call the management company to get something faxed over. We ended up waiting with our bags near the security entrance for about 25 minutes, then we had to walk quite a ways to our unit, which we couldn't find for another 30 minutes. The paperwork said our unit was 236, so we were looking for a building with 200s. There were none! This complex is on a huge hill with hundreds of units and many buildings and TONS of stairs, and we had all of our luggage. My 70 year old mom hiked up the hill back to the security booth to ask for help, but the rude security guard wouldn't let her look at his map. They have no maps to hand out, which seems CRAZY given the unintuitive layout of this complex.
We then flagged down a resident who told us that it's building 2, unit 36. We finally found it and got in. Part of the problem might have been that we did not receive the “orientation packet” that they said they emailed to us. But if our names had been at the gate, our taxi driver would have been able to show us where the unit was. But these things happen sometimes and we laughed about it.
The complex has lots of posted rules and penalties for breaking the rules, like you can’t move any of the tables with umbrellas down by the pool and you can’t walk on the only patch of grass there (overlooking the ocean). Not really a problem for us, but it just created a somewhat adversarial feeling for a gated community.
Overall we had a great time on Catalina. While we enjoyed our stay, we would probably not go back to this particular complex.
