About this house rental
We love sharing the beautiful space and landscape we’ve created by opening up our basement apartment to travelers. This apartment is completely private. It has a fully secure, independent entrance which you access through our backyard. There are no interior common areas as our two living spaces are separated by a staircase and two doors.
Our midcentury modern neighborhood is safe, quiet, has an abundance of mature trees, backs up to a nature conservancy yet is in the heart of the near west side of Madison. We’re a bike ride away from Hildale shopping area which includes the new Whole Foods Market, U.W. Hospital, Picnic Point, and a quick drive to campus and downtown.
Once you arrive at Anchor Inn, you will walk along the LED illuminated grey stone path along the driveway and continue down the flagstone steps into the lush backyard. Your private patio sits just outside your front door and includes the hot tub to relax in with a drink.
Your apartment is 1000 square feet of open concept living. You will love the extra large shower with a rain shower head, king size mattress, a huge living room with a comfy sectional and cozy gas fireplace, 55in smart tv with Sonos surround sound, kitchenette with induction burner, microwave, fridge and freezer large enough for all your needs.
There are around 100 acres of woods to explore behind the house without driving anywhere. Just head out our back gate to explore the trails. Grab your cross country skis if there’s snow or your hiking shoes in the summer. You will often see turkey, deer and may hear coyote and owls calling at night.
Our home is right on the bike route. You can walk to the neighborhood bar, we’re half a mile away from the Saturday Westside Farmers Market, 1 mile to the restaurant and shopping destination of Hildale, Target and Whole Foods, 2.5 miles to UW Hospital and Picnic Point, 2.5 miles to Lake Wingra boathouse, 3.5 miles to Camp Randall and Monroe Street, 4 miles to the Capitol Square and the Memorial Union, 6.5 miles to EPIC, 6.8 miles to The Sylvee, 12 miles to the cute town of Paoli & 25 miles to Devils Lake State Park
We have lived here for over 30 years and are more than happy to offer suggestions of where to eat or to answer any other questions you might have. We maintain an exceptional level of cleanliness in our rental space. We only use eco-conscious cleaning products and scent free detergent. The space isn’t recommended for guests traveling with infants and young children as there are many breakables and is not childproofed. We have two dogs and two cats that are frequently hanging out in the backyard. They love visiting our guests for pets but aren’t allowed in the apartment for cleanliness/allergy reasons.
Things to note:
-Your apartment entrance is down flagstone steps and are uneven surfaces. There is no handrail to steady yourself. Please reference the photos to make sure of accessibility.
-Weddings, including wedding prep, photography, etc is considered an event and requires a booking inquiry and an extra charge before booking.
All are welcome.

This was our first VRBO stay and everything went so well. Property was as described and more! Hosts were willing to help us with a few questions about getting to the game. As Alabama fans, we may have been disappointed Coach Saban wasn't in the hot tub, but then not! Very private, cozy space. Thanks so much!

We've talked about a weekend getaway in Madison and finally made it happen. This place made our weekend! Quiet, clean, comfortable. It was perfect. Rachael checked in on us via the app seeing if we needed anything which was great. The fire place and hot tun were our favorites. This was the perfect place to stay for a weekend to get away and recharge. We will be back but next time in the summer so we can appreciate the backyard and its foiliage! Thank you!

We had a wonderful stay at the Anchor Inn! Rachael was very accommodating and responsive, and was flexible given our stay was in the midst of a blizzard. Beautiful views with the conservancy close for snow shoeing, and the hot tub was a great way to relax. Highly recommend and would stay again!

We spent four nights here and it was the perfect, peaceful environment. The apartment is cozy, beautifully decorated, with excellent use of the space. The backyard is gorgeous with access to the wooded trails of the adjacent conservation park.
The bed was very comfortable and the living room was a great place to watch the game on TV or curl up in front of the fire with a good book. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, microwave, and induction burner (I had never used one before but our hosts provided excellent instructions, so it was easy to use).
The property is located in a quiet neighborhood convenient to everything in the area. The hosts were proactive and very responsive. The bonus was visits with the resident cat and dogs.

We were excited to find our accomodations even more delightful than we expected. The hosts' hospitality and kindness went above and beyond. The home was clean, comfortable, and decorated with great style. The neighborhood was private and had easy access to the bike path and the university. The bonus to our stay was our frequent visitor.... Nina, their adorable cat!

We relished in the many aspects of this property that allowed us to find peace during our visit to Madison. The zen of the beautiful gardens, the therapeutic visits from the friendly pets, and sitting in the jacuzzi at the end of the day all contributed to making our stay satisfying and memorable. The property owners were incredibly friendly and struck a wonderful balance between availability and giving us space. The interior was so thoughtfully put together with unique yet coordinating modern components. We loved our stay and highly recommend!

This wins for best use of space! This apartment is functional as well as stylish, cozy and comfy! It has a great open and welcoming layout, huge bathroom and super comfy bed and good closet space. The backyard gardens are spectacular and peaceful! Rachael is very clear with checkin directions and was on top of communication the whole length of our stay which we appreciated because we were so exhausted and she made everything so easy for us! I would absolutely recommend this apartment and look forward to staying again.

My wife and I really loved it, a lot. We went for this year's CrossFit Games. From the beginning, Rachael stayed in contact w/ me, checking in and giving instructions for everything prior to arrival. All greatly appreciated. Upon arrival, we immediately noticed the neighborhood was quiet and cute, promising. The house was really pretty as well, even more promising. Walking to the back though...stunning. Flowers, plants, stones, you were in your own little world! I won't spoil it, but seriously, make sure you take walks around. Inside was so cute too, and spacious. The decor may not be for everyone, but we loved it! I like the bathroom skull picture =) Everything that needed instructions had them in picture format and the place was definitely not lacking in anything! The hot tub too, our nightly refuge. I could go on for a long time, but I say just go see it! Make sure you read the Dumb Birds book too, we did a few birds a day to start the morning =) What really stuck out to us though, was the hostesses. Rachael checked in frequently to make sure we were ok but never intruded. Luckily though, we got an opportunity to spend some time with them and the fur babies (you need to meet all of them! Nina the cat came and spent about 30 min w/ me one night...). They're truly great people. They're fun, extremely sweet, funny and just people the world needs more of! Amazing bakers too...I regret not staying longer/being there more but highly recommend anyone go experience it!

I absolutely loved this apartment!!! It was so easy to check in and out. The place was extremely clean and so comfortable. It was nice to have phone chargers already plugged in and ready to use in the living room and bedroom. I used the hot tub twice and it was wonderful but would probably be better in cooler temperatures since it was in the 90’s during my visit. The landscaping surrounding the house and apartment is visually stunning and it was so tranquil. Rachael was always quick to answer any questions and give recommendations. The only thing I found a little odd was that there weren’t any wash cloths in the bathroom except the makeup removal ones . It wasn’t an issue for me because I had one with me anyway . I would totally come back here to stay again and again .

I wish I lived there. The garden walkway to the front door is stunning. Once inside, the decor is amazing. The owners put so much thought into the property. Then at the end of a long day, the hot tub was the perfect way to relax. Another fun touch we’re snacks, k-cup pods in several flavors and the fridge has a variety of beverages to choose from. I would definitely stay there again. Thank you!
