Property is full of life and house was nice & cozy with fire place. Our second time staying here and definitely not our last. Great place to relax and unplug from every day life!!!

We stayed at Hale Hapu'u in June 2024 and loved it! It was the best set up for us while we visited Volcano, HI. We had two families with teenagers, so the set up was great! The kids loved exploring around the property and listening to the tree frogs at night. The location was perfect, the drive to Volcanoes National Park was super close. We enjoyed spending an entire day in the park and having a quick drive back to the house. We loved the house, the decor was awesome, appliances and kitchen were great because we were able to make meals for the whole crew and hang out playing board games and cards at night. The hosts were great, they checked in with us to make sure we had everything we needed and didn't have any questions. We would highly recommend Hale Hapu'u, the hosts and Vacasa. A++++

My whole family loved this house, it is beautifully decorated, very well stocked kitchen, both showers are amazing, beds were comfy and the landscaping is stunning

Nice dose, no surprises- what you want in a stay. Website is accurate reflection. Kitchen has everything you want for food prep. Glassware for every drink. Thanks to a great stay.

Such a beautiful peaceful comfortable place and very close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The neighborhood is also perfect for long walks and is closer to restaurants and gift shops.

House was great and well stocked with kitchen accessories. Nice touches with cookies and some bottled water on arrive. Kids love the house and yard. Very secluded yet close to the National Park

Loved this home! Besides the gorgeous scenery and peaceful, secluded setting in a beautiful tropical garden, you must appreciate the owner's taste and attention to detail. The carved doors and furniture pieces are gorgeous. The home is full of charm and character. Very spacious and cozy space. Plenty of clean linens and beach towels. There was no funky smell, contrary to some reviews. Thank you for making our time in the Volcano so comfortable and memorable. Would definitely rent it again.

The house is lovely. Very nicely furnished and comfortable. Loved the fireplace and back porch. It has everything you need. The location is quiet - the only noise was from birds chirping and the feral pigs who appeared in the back yard. Very close to the National Park. We loved it and would come again.

This cabin was really amazing! We really enjoyed our stay.

Our family of 5 stayed here in July. It was clean up on arrival and had plenty of towels and extra blankets for cooler nights.
A couple of suggestions:
1. Upstairs and downstairs bathrooms privacy could be improved with opaque film over the windows as the showers are exposed to the outside.
2. The downstairs bedroom suite has a sewage smell. We opened the windows and doors to try to air it out, but it was not the solution. There may be something wrong with the leach field for the sewer that needs repair.
Other than that, it was a beautiful stay in the volcano rainforest. Close to the VNP, Hilo, waterfall hikes, etc.

The main part of the home was great—kitchen, living room, bathroom, and upstairs bedroom and bathroom. They were very cute, spacious, and clean. If the whole house were that way, it would deserve a five star review.
Unfortunately, the master bedroom in the annex was another story. It was slightly less clean. But the main problem is that it smelled like sewage. We noticed the problem as soon as we ran the washing machine, and the smell persisted (as we continued to do loads of wash). Fortunately, the smell did not get into the main part of the house. But it was really a downer for my wife and me who slept in that bedroom. I would book this home again only if I knew that problem were resolved.

This house was perfect for our Christmas in Hawaii! It was clean, spacious, and comfy with a variety of sleeping options. Kitchen was well-stocked with supplies, and there was plenty of linens and towels for our family of 6. We loved this location near Volcano National Park and the artistic community it's situated in. The yard is beautiful.

Great stay in Volcano, just a few minutes from the park entrance. The house is special - completely isolated and surrounded by lush forest. Was great for both adults and kids.
Note that while the kitchen is well equipped, there are not even the minimal supplies (salt, pepper, oil etc.) so plan on bringing everything with you...

We loved staying at Hale Hapu . It’s a beautiful house thoughtfully designed to enjoy the nature. It was very clean and stocked well with everything one might need. A great place to relax and unwind.

Beautiful property tucked away near the end of neighborhood and street. The property was just as pictured. Beautiful home, beautifully decorated and surrounded by lush vegetation.
If you plan on staying here, know that there are only a few restaurants in the village. There are only kitchen essentials. No spices or even salt and pepper. You will need to bring all food items and condiments with you. Other than that, it has ample space, nice linens and towels, complimentary bath & body products, and laundry & cleaning essentials.
I loved the sound of the coqui frogs. My husband did not. Lol
There are a pair of birds that roam the yard and a sweet smell in the air from the ginger plants.
I recommend it for those that do not mind being in a rural area and want close proximity to the Volcano National Park.

Extended family of 7 stayed here and all of us were delighted with the features and layout of the house. Loved our stay here.

This is probably the most unique and impressive vacation rental we have been to. The property is amazing! My family of 5 had enough room to spread out and be comfortable. The layout was perfect and it was truly a gem to stay here.
Beds and bathrooms were comfortable and well appointed.
Internet was super, although cell phone reception is spotty in the area (we could still call but at times we had low bars)
Kitchen was well appointed but bring all spices and oils you want because there aren’t any
Beware that the heat and a/c are not the strong points in this rental, but there are space heaters and fans that make it comfortable.
Coqui frogs are plenty and it rains a lot but it all adds to the beauty of the space.
This property is very close to VNP.
Lots of space to work.
All together, we loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone!

I would have taken 0.5 point off the rating for the check-process. An hour before check-in time I received an email giving me the gate code and alarm code, but the entry code "will be sent later." I called on my way there and the person said may be I don't need one since it wasn't given together with other codes. I didn't feel very good about it but I thought I would go see for myself. When we got to the door, there was a keypad obviously requiring a code to get into the house. Called again and got put through 2 more persons, who kept telling me that the issue has been escalated. They told me to try 2 different codes but none worked. Finally, about an hour later, the person from the local office called and told me that the keypad isn't working and told me to go to a lockbox to use the emergency key. This house is managed by Vacasa. There was clearly a poor communication chain between the main and local office and the customer. We were very upset during that hour standing outside, make sure you have all 3 codes before heading over to the house!
Otherwise, the house is beautiful, well-maintained with a great layout and very spacious. The sounds of insects and pouring rain can be very loud through the night. One suggestion would be to put curtains or blinds in the bedrooms. I got woken up by the sun shining right in my eyes before 7am.
The house is about 9 mins from Volcano NP, very convenient to be able to go back and forth if you don't want to visit the park all at once. Tips: to avoid the crowds at night for lava viewing, we had dinner at the house, then headed out after 9pm.

We spent three nights in this beautiful home, and wished we could have stayed longer. We were vacationing with another family, and this spacious home worked out perfectly! We were close enough to the volcano to visit it by day and night, seeing the magma glow at night is a must see.
The beauty and comfort of this home combined with the sounds of nature from the rainforest created a magical experience for us. We hope to visit again some day.

Location to VNP can’t be beat. The house is beautiful, well-equipped, with an amazing back porch. The fireplace came in handy during our cool evenings. It really felt like we were being allowed to stay in someone’s actual home, rather than a vacation rental. We would (perhaps “will”?) stay here again.

We contacted the agency first night, that bedsheets were used, hair and dirt in bed and hair in the shower and they were not able to come and resolve it for our whole stay. Every day they said that they will contact the cleaning agency, but nobody came..

This home was even better than I hoped. The sleeping areas in the 2 living rooms were very spacious and comfortable. And it was very good to have a full bath off the common area. This way there was usually no wait even for 8 people. This home is elegant, modern kitchen, baths etc yet solidly built. Every one of us was grateful to be at Hale Hapu'u. Also located in a quiet part of Volcano Village with such beautiful nature surrounding the home.

Nice house, needs attention to details
There was definitely an issue with the house when we arrived. Two doors were unlocked and one was open about a foot. No outside lights were left on so we hesitated going in but we felt we had no choice. We did check for intruders throughout the whole house, called the property manager who listened and only referred us to another "technical manager". By that time we had decided to stay only if we could alarm the house and that the response would be directly by the police, not by phone tag to the property managers or owners. We were assured it would be so we decided to stay.
The house is lovely and as described on the website. However it is on the rainy side of the island. I found it damp and a little chilly and I could not get the propane stove lit. I got the pilot light on but it didn't seem to convert to being on. There was dust under the bed upstairs and soap scum on the soap dish. One of the outside light bulbs is flickering. During the rain, there is a small leak upstairs that must be coming from the roof.
It would be nice to have plastic containers or plastic to help store leftovers but I do understand these may not be available according to the information we received prior to our visit.
We ended up having a good time on the island but we definitely got off to a bad start.

Great home with lovely rooms and 3 wonderful bathrooms minutes from Volcano National Park. Outside of home looks nothing like the inside - we thought we were at the wrong location when we pulled up - looks like tiny house from street - not from inside or the back ---huge living space that made us feel at home as soon as we walked in the door. Loved it!!

Volcano viewing
This property was the ideal location for spending time at volcano park. A beautiful home and ideal for 2 couples with 2 master suites.
The only glitch for us was check in. The management company that handles the booking sent an email with check in information which also included a link to register with them. Since the link requested my passport and it looked as if I had all the I formation I needed I didn't bother to register with them. However when we arrived we discovered that all the codes in the email were wrong and we could not get in. I phoned the number and was told I had to register online to access new codes. It made for a bumpy start. In all the traveling we have done with VRBO this is the first time I have been asked for passport info. Also I don't understand why they send outdated information in an email if they insist on registering through the site. At the very least send an email to your guests letting them know they will be required to register with your turn key link to get the proper codes.

Great place to stay at Volcano
Other than some spider webs on the inside of the upstairs windows, there isn't anything we didn't like about this rental.

Terrible management, beautiful house with safety and privacy issues
We experienced several issues that limited our enjoyment of the property.
1) after we received a confirmation email that provided the gate code and security system code, we did not receive the front door code.
It took more than hour on the phone, during which several excuses were made by turnkey and documentation was requested to verify our identities. An hour during which we were pulled over on a highway due to reception issues.
Security is great, but we already had been given the gate code and the security system code. So it seemed like the property management bumbling rather than an actual security measure.
2) We asked if the water at the house was potable (a common question for rentals in the area). We received the response that it was not, then a follow up response during the gate code debacle stating yes the water is potable, then an email stating no, not potable.
After staying there, it appeared the water was potable. A clear and accurate response would have been appreciated.
3) the stovetop worked fine, but the oven took 30 minutes to heat to 185 degrees.and leaked gas into the home. Obviously not operational. It took a somewhat frantic hour to purge the smell from the home. Needless to say, we did not get to use the oven during our stay.
4) in grabbing an oven mitt for holding a hot pan, I put oven mitt#1 back due to obvious damage. Oven mitt #2 looked better, but had a giant , unseen hole in the seem of the forefinger, which was perfectly positioned to receive a blistering burn on said finger.
5) while this may be petty, there was no laundry detergent in the home. The listing said a 'starter supply' would be provided. A little irritated by issues 1-4, we made a point of asking for the detergent. A delivery was promised by the management company...and the delivery never arrived.
6) this is definitely petty - homes in the area tend to provide local coffee, and sometimes local produce as a welcome gift. There was a coffee container in a basket that appeared to be used for this purpose but was conspicuously empty. We don't expect or require freebies, but we just thought that it was funny.
7) and the biggest concern: there is a security camera pointing directly at the primary bedroom, directly at the bed. Blinds can occlude it's view, but they were open when we arrived.
Overall, an incredible, beautiful home - but an experience ruined by the management, safety concerns, and privacy concerns.

Beautiful home in the Rainforest
Hale Hapu’u was one of the most unique properties we have stayed at. The thought and craftsmanship that went into the design of this unique Asian/Japanese inspired home make it a warm and inspiring home - a must stay in Volcano Village. Nestled in the rainforest, you can hear the tree frogs all night - in the morning you can walk the trail in the rainforest. It is a 5 minute drive to amenities in the village and 10 minutes drive to the National Park. I would highly recommend this house (we will be back!).

Would not recommend.
Mold and dust throughout interior home. Didn’t sleep in master bedroom because of mold in this room and sand in bed. Could not use lawn because grass wasn’t cut. Outside of home needed a good power washing. Only at home for three nights so we tolerated, but left home 7-8am and returned 8-10pm.

Loved the sounds of the forest. Beds very comfy and had everything we needed. The only thing that would have made it better was if they had a hot tub- which we personally would pay an extra $100/night for. Mahalo for letting us stay! One note: the electronic lock needs to be fixed as there was no way to lock the house. Fortunately it’s a safe area. Also disarming the alarm didn’t work but there weren’t any consequences
