Arrived at 3pm, there were no staff manning reception. We were waiting 10 minutes which was not a good start.
Thought we would go into the bar for a drink instead of waiting and there were no staff behind the bar either (315pm)!
The room we stayed in was tired, nevertheless, it was clean and comfortable.
The pool area/sauna/steam room was decent.

Bed and room very comfortable, parkland location is lovely. Food and wine nice too.
That's it for positives sadly. Hotel is very tired, needs a most areas updating and modernising. Staff a mix of very new and experienced but either not enough or badly organised. Long waits at the bar even though only 10 people in the bar. 10 minute wait to get salt brought to go with the fish and chips.
3 fire alarms in the night, no explanation or apology. When this was raised on check out a half hearted apology was offered but not with any eye contact or sincerity.

Where do I start, firstly we did not get to stay here as upon arrival we were told that the hotel was double booked and they did not have a room for us to stay in, even though we received confirmation each day up to arrival, and on the day of arrival, the staff were useless, they booked us into a budget hotel down the road, well this is what we were told, only to find out the next day it was in fact a different hotel, we were booked into the hotel for 2 nights for a friends wedding which was taking place at the hotel, this totally ruined our weekend it was very stressful and upsetting, we then found out that the hotel has a contract with British Gas and that their engineers get priority over PAYING GUESTS, this is the worst service at any hotel I have ever encountered, no Manager available to talk too, all on days off apparently ! The room we were given on the first night was awful, it had a strong smell of glue, the curtains were are the tracks and it had no TV, they then moved us to a suite, this was no better, this hotel is in dire need of a makeover it is old and tired would not recommend staying here if it was the last hotel on earth !!!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Booked 2 nights separately for a wedding, when booking in we were advised we did not have a room for the second night ie the wedding day, as they had overbooked by 10 rooms. All managers were off for the 2 days, no one had contacted us, yet we'd booked months ago and they left it with the poor girl at reception to resolve. The room for the first night, that we were given smelled strongly of glue or silicon and had no TV.
We complained and were given a so called suit, the picture below is the view from the suit. We were told sorry, we'll put you in the 4 star holiday inn for the second night ie wedding and that they would pay for any taxi's and give us a bottle of wine. Whoopee.
The next day I checked the 4 star holiday inn has been booked to be advised your now in the 3 star Ramada, but we'll still pay for your taxi's (how nice).
We have not had time to use the spar facilities as we have either been in strong debates with reception or with each as we travelled hours to get here only to be thoroughly disappointed. Mcdonald's hotels you should be embarrassed, the whole thing is a joke including the management (or lack of it) in this hotel.

We went into the hotel room and it was dusty, there was cobb webs on the roof to the wall, the toilet seat was broken and so we went to complain they moved us without question but next room wasnt the clean either but was better, there was a wedding on and the people next door had a party after again i called down, guy couldnt be nicer and got party stopped straight away, but next night i stepped on a bit of glass that was on the floor and we had to wait 25 mins to be seated for breakfast. Just not a great stay at all. It certainly didnt feel luxury.

Stayed multiple times and regularly use this hotel

The hotel is dated and disgusting, it desperately needs refurbished. My room 107 had damp mould and stains in the corner of the room and over the carpet. The bedding was stained. It’s well past it’s best.
I orders optional 2 x breakfast but then only required 1 breakfast, so contacted the booking provider in advance to advise only 1 breakfast was required, they said I need to speak to hotel to arrange cancellation. Spoke to hotel who said it had to be through booking provider. Contacted them both multiple times and eventually told I couldn’t cancel optional breakfast. Very poor and dishonest service- I would not recommend this hotel.

Hotel was good. My room could do updating perhaps but it might be the overall style of the properly.
Everyone was helpful and breakfast was decent.
The spa is ok but it is in need of some repair and upgrades.
Overall i would be happy to go back anytime.

Very clean room, loved having a bath and shower.
Only slight issue is the room was very hot and no way to control it

Check in smooth and fine. Room dated, lighting in bathroom was hanging off ceiling, they couldn't fix until the morning (when we check out so what's the point?) told them to just remove the light completely.
Dinner was OK, nothing special. Breakfast not the best. Hotel is dated, best days behind her.
Just to note, it's an extra £20 an hour after checkout if you wish to stay longer. I asked if it were possible to checkout at 12pm rather than 11am... Thought that because of the issues we faced with the room x they would oblige, however, wasn't going to pay additional to do so. Never managed the pool with the kids.
If you're looking for no frills, then this is your place. Grounds are lovely, staff pleasant.

Very nice hotel in lovely woodland setting. Large well appointed room. Would have preferred walk in shower to bath. Bathroom rather dated. Bar prices very expensive. Good breakfast but again on the steep side cost wise. Didnt try Spa on this o casion but looked great.

Great hotel stay for a night after a week of working away.
Hotel is lovely, large, clean and boasts a lovely bar and breakfast area.
Staff were helpful.
Nice pool though not too big.
Highlight of the hotel is its beautiful, comfortable, cost, well decorated rooms. I loved my room and the entire layout and slept well as it was so quiet thanks to an added set of doors that leads via suite entrance into the bedroom.

Very dated Hotel and rooms. Extremely noisy lift that made a loud buzzing/humming sound (avoid room 107), made worse by a Wedding with loud music that went on until the early hours. Steam room was barely working and no water fountain available in the pool/spa area.

Great location for The Open at Troon 2024.

Surprisingly, very disappointed in our stay at MacDonald Crutherland. We have stayed here in the past and have always been keen to come back. On this occasion, we paid a premium due to the hotel being booked up, mostly for a wedding. Maybe as a result of the wedding, the service was poor, at times we were unable to get hold of anyone at the front desk or on the phone. We were put in a room which overlooked the service entrance to the function room and from 4pm until after 1am there were vans reversing and speeding about the car park (one reversed into a tall street light in the car park before driving off and staff didn’t even bother to check it). The vans were filled with crates and equipment which were noisily trundled along in metal cages into the venue, while the workers shouted loudly to each other, using offensive language. Then as the party was in full swing everything was noisily returned to the vans with even less care for hotel guests like myself, who had children trying to sleep. We tried to call reception and got no answer, which meant I had to get out of bed at 12.45am to go looking for someone to show them videos of the noise and to ask them to get them to keep the noise down. This would have been bad enough if we had not already been denied a long lie that morning, due to work being carried out which meant we were woken at 7.50am by power tools and workmen shouting. The 2 power cuts the following morning were the final straw and we were glad to be going home.

Everything was mostly good, nice big room, pool sauna and steam room were all good, shower in the room was a bit dodgy and occasionally went either roasting or freezing.

Check in was excellent.
In the room the catches on the window were broken, there was no hairdryer, there was no tv remote and the tea/coffee box looked as if it either hadnt been topped up from tge previous gues or thrown together with stuff missing. The mattress was far to soft and not comfortable during the night. Alo there was a strange smell in the room on entering.

Value for money it was pretty good. However having known McDonald Hotels for 40 years there were some slightly disappointing things. TV did not really work. Bar, which served Henricks Gin, had no cucumber. Barman said Chef would not provide it. Not sure what the 'Catch of the Day' was. we were told Cod. A few minutes later another table were quoted Hake. So, not sure what we had. For sweet we ordered Lemon Tart with rhubarb compote. It came with red berries compote and no mention. Tbh not really good enough. But this is being really picky, sorry.

The room was lovey but there was a terrible smell of damp. The bedding has an odour of damp washing I asked for the sheets to be changed. They were not just sprayed with fabric freshener the 3rd night I could not stand it and ask for a room swap
I asked to speak to a manger 3 times and still no body called to
Discuss the issue. Other guests at reception also complained about the awful smell in their rooms but no management came
To speak to us
Customer service is awful

Excellent staff who made you feel welcome and Hannah on reception and the lad in the bar went above and beyond. They were a credit to the hotel

We enjoyed 3 nights at this hotel during half term. Checking in process was very efficient and all staff were friendly. The main part of the hotel was much nicer and the pool was excellent. The hotel room in contrast felt tatty and not particularly clean though I am confident that it had been thoroughly cleaned. Our family room had a double and 2 single beds, so well set up for a family but the beds and room were in need of a refresh. During our stay there was a Prom and a Wedding on consecutive nights, but this was really quite and did not disturb our stay.

Very underwhelmed by our stay. Greeted by a man at reception who didn’t look up from his computer when he asked how he can help. He then didn’t engage in any conversation which we found slightly offhand.
Restaurant was like a function room with tables and chairs thrown in, bland walls with no decor and shabby carpet.
Outside seating has a few tables and the bar didn’t have any snacks which we found odd.
Restaurant staff seemed completely uninterested and spoke in a monotone voice. It wasn’t remotely welcoming. We also passed another members of staff on our way to our room which we guessed was housekeeping, she gave us a cold stare and kept walking. No hello or anything. Again, very odd.
The grounds are nice and we went a short walk, but thought there was more areas we could access than there were.
Bedroom was spacious clean and had what we needed, however the tv was tiny compared to the huge walls and wasn’t able to relax and watch anything at the end of the evening.
Needed extra towels and tried to call reception number plus times and it kept ringing out.
So disappointing, as we were very much in need of a lovely relaxing night away, but felt unappreciated and unwelcome. Won’t be back

The interior and rooms are in dire need of updating and refurbishment. The carpets are dingy and the plastic on the curtains were shredded due to age. The exterior was clean and the gardens and grounds were beautiful so I was surprised when I saw how run down our room was. It’s also very noisy, being able to hear every door close up and down the hallways. The rooms were kept very clean by the housekeeping staff but the decor still looked very dingy and old.

nice building in lovely grounds . breakfast was expensive at £22.00 , it was nice but half that price would be the norm.

I was really looking forward to staying here with my mum, but we were disappointed with the facilities, staff and lack of care and cleanliness. The food was okay, but very expensive; mum and I had a small piece of cod, (same size as a Mr Kipling individual cake slice), a circle of crushed potato and a few stems of broccoli, followed by an individual pudding with a spoonful of ice-cream, (even though my mum had asked for cream). We didn't have drinks, just a jug of water for the table, but the bill was £60!
The pool changing rooms were really cold and there was no shower gel or shampoo in the shower cubicles to wash after a swim. We rinsed out our swimsuits and put them in the spinner to dry, but it was not working.
I decided to shower the next morning in our room, but the water wouldn't drain. I turned off the shower, pulled out the plug, but still the water didn't move. I put my hands in the outlet and pulled out the hair trap, which was completely gunged up with hair and soap scum! It was disgusting!
At breakfast, we were shown to a table which was surrounded by loads of crumbs all over the floor! We were shocked, but in response, the waitress just said, 'yeah, there was a family sat here earlier.' During our breakfast, no-one took away our empty plates/dishes, even when they brought us our cooked items, they just weren't very attentive and didn't seem to care. We watched the waiting staff clean the vacated tables by wiping all the crumbs onto the carpet!

As with everything you get what you pay for as was reflected in the condition of our room. Bathroom wasn't too clean, rest of our room was ok. We were concerned about the heater hanging off the wall and reported it to reception. Breakfast was good with no complaints, however, evening meal was very disappointing...3 ingredients listed on the menu of one of our dishes wasn't actually included in the dish, yet the price remained the same. We did report it but failed to get any feedback.

Hotel was absolutely amazing! Bed was so comfy! Food was beautiful. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back!

Almost all the staff are absolutely wonderful. The beds are comfy and the rooms are large, quiet and clean. There are dog friendly rooms available. The breakfasts are tasty and filling. It is a relaxing and pretty hotel. The pool is very nice and open quite long hours (6:30am-9:30pm weekdays). They have some really good deals on bookings sometimes!
They could do with putting some money into redecorating. There was some peeling wallpaper, a slightly broken TV and a leaky shower door in our room. The staff seemed over-stretched so during busy periods I would expect more people to be working. The drinks are a tad expensive.
Overall we had an amazing time staying here, we would just like to see them invest some more into their hotel.
