The complex is a little jaded but the guest service is the best I have ever experienced..and I travel a lot. All staff very friendly and the whole place was extremely clean.

This is the Mandarin Oriental at $300/night, so of course I hold them to a higher standard. The hotel room and views were amazing - the grounds are nice, and the amenities are great. But the service isn't what I'd expect from a 5-star hotel. The foreign staff were great: Mihai at the reception helped get us into our room when it seemed the Chinese staff were bumbling through our check-in process, and went out of his way to make things go smoothly, especially at check-in.Seems that as Chinese hotels have cut back on foreign staff, the service has decreased, with several small but noticeable moments that stood out:1. Withing 5 minutes of checking into our room, a service worker arrived unannounced and had to come in to change a lightbulb - something that should have been taken care of before our arrival, and certainly could have come with a phone call to warn us.2. We stepped out of our room and noticed an emply cart passing, and asked "Can you please take us to the beach?" The driver simply said "No." and drove off... Was kinda surprised that he didn't at least offer to call us a ride.3. At the restaurant "Fresh", the staff were fairly clueless as to how to describe the portion size, and struggled to open a bottle of beer.4. At breakfast they took our orders for coffee, and after 10 minutes no coffee had arrived. I put in a second order, and they got very nervous and put some urgency in delivering our coffee - when it arrived it wasn't the right order.

We spent 4 days at the hotel before the traffic season arrives. The room is clean, spacious and comfortable, the condition is not as new as other newly built hotels but it's good in general. The service was friendly and responsive, which made our stay easy and smooth.
However, we didn't get any help with the luggage at the checkout and we had to carry everything to walk through the property (it's huge), the front desk was busy checking in groups who booked the villas (yes we stayed at much standard room) and kept us stood there for over 20mins. They could have sit us down while waiting and let us know once they finished. Would appreciate if they can be more considerating for other house guests despite the room rank they stay.
Also, be careful with the car service you can book through the concierge. We got charged more by the driver at the end of the trip as we "requested different destinations", but the price setting we were told by the hotel was by daily basis i/o destination related. We didn't want to argue for such small amount so we paid the extras, to be honest we were ready to pay the tips before the driver delivered his speech, glad we didn't tip him.

Great choice for rest & relaxation. Secluded & private. Good selection of food & wine. Service is awesome.
Not enough beach chairs on sand for hotel of this size. Also, beach is very rocky compared to rest of Sanya.

The staff service was just amazing. Special mention to Cathy at breakfast who served with such warmth and enthusiasm, even preparing us some fruits for our excursion, and also Francis from reception who even came out to greet us goodbye at the end of stay. The whole team from buggy staff to reception to restaurant was young and hospitable. Excellent facilities and the convenience to downtown, yet secluded on a private beach, makes Sanya Mandarin a top 5-star hotel!

Very impressed by this hotel. Almost perfection. Service is first class although English language is not widely spoken. Spa, breakfast, Executive lounge, Fresh Restaurant and kids club all very high standard. Only slight disappointment is lack of really sandy beach. Thank you so much.

Highly disappointing! The beach is of low quality and tiny in size. It was unbelievable that a 5star hotel of this price range would charge daily rates for the wifi. Their BBQ menu was a joke, over-priced, minimum choice, low quality. Eating out was a far better option than eating at the hotel, which was almost 10 times less. The only good thing about this hotel is the level of privacy you get. No crowds, no noise, no kids,...probably because most rooms were vacant. In short, it was the worst resort experience we've ever had. Not recommendable!

The hotel is a little away from the main part of the city which makes it much more relaxing and quiet (yet if one wants to go to the city it not far and it is easy to get a cab). The beach is beautiful and the spa is fantastic. The overall service was also really good as well as the food, we really enjoyed our stay at Sanya.

I travel a lot, often to places places like Bora Bora, Maldives, Phuket, Bali, Caribbean, Hawaii, etc. The Mandarin Oriental in Sanya really exceeded my expectation. The interior is robust and private, of very high grade. The staff are trained very well (especially in context of China PRC standards). The restaurant called Fresh is on the beach and I now see that it is appropriately named on the best restaurants in China. The noodle restaurant is also marvelous. My expectations tend to be quite high – this hotel was pretty much perfect. The beach itself is not the best but the resort is awesome. Also, the concierge could use some work, as for the wifi connection in the rooms. But other than these items, this hotel is really at the highest end and I highly recommend. – CrayolaLife from Hong Kong

We stayed for 2 nights, with an early check-in (before 12 o'clock) , and a late check-out (6pm). Cost less than RMB 60 to get to the hotel by taxi from the airport. This hotel is certainly not famous for its sand beach, as it is quite a small one. We did bring along our snorkeling kits to enjoy a bit of fun chasing the fish (there are snorkeling kits, and kayaks for rental). Services have been up to standard as we expected (free bottle of water, fruits, transport within the hotel). Only downside is the public toilets within the hotel is poorly maintained and smell badly sometimes, and the wifi cost RMB100/day and its signal is pretty weak inside the room.

Grand facility, really good staff. English sometimes was a struggle though. Fresh restaurant is magnificent, i ended up having 3 of my 4 dinners there. Other restaurants are good too. Beach is ok but small, pools are plenty and variable

While the rooms and facilities were beautiful, this was not the kind of service I would expect from a Mandarin Oriental. Bad weather during our stay caused a serious leak in the room. While the hotel can't control the weather, they didn't do anything about the leak either. It was more than three hours after my initial call that they responded with some towels to sop up the water and never did address the actual leak. Prices for the spa that were in the room materials were outdated, the prices at the actual spa were significantly higher. Staff was pleasant, but generally did not speak English - initially surprising for a 5-star hotel catering to international guests, until you realize there really aren't international guests. It was about 90% Chinese with a few western expats. Overall, a disappointing stay.

We had an awesome time and the stay was deeply relaxing. We were welcomed with a chain of flowers around the neck by the receptionist and got driven to our hotel room by a hotel buggy. The room is spacious and we were able to see the sea.
Overall, the environment had an asian comteporary style with a lot of exotic plants and lovely flowers. We loved the hotel pools. When we went there in June it was low season in Sanya so that many facilities were quite empty such as sun chairs, pools, restaurants etc. The breakfast had rich variety and was every delicious.
The service was very good - everyone was dedicated to help us and serve whenever we had an inquiry. During the day, the hotel offered some activities such as yoga or beach volleyball. The yoga teacher was very professional. Also, the gym had excellent facilities.
The location of the hotel is Dadonghai. To reach the bar and restaurent street we had to take a cab (5-10 yuan).
I would highly recommend a stay in the Sanya Mandarin Oriental.
