We were there during Hurricane Helena, Staff could not have been more helpful not only to the guests but the families who came who lost everything and needed a hot meal, bottled water and a roll of TP. A strong community spirit when everyone was reaching out for comfort and basic needs and the hotel accommodated everyone for many days.

This is not really a fully functioning hotel. The current owners are living on the past efforts. Hotels.com should not list this property. There was no food service (as advertised). No breakfast either. The A/C air ducts were pouring out dust. Very poor upkeep. I could go on but this facility is one step from a total knock down.

Always a great place to stay

Loved that there was no electronics (t.v.,phone,clock radio) in the room. Enjoyed having my morning coffee on the large front porch with rockers. Hotel is walkable to all the cute shops in town. Lots of natural light through the room. Floors are old wood floors, so yes they creak, but that’s what they are suppose to do. Will definitely go back.

Very comfortable, friendly staff, however the bathrooms were not clean enough, cleaning should be very detailed please, there was urine smell coming out of the bathroom.

My first comment is that there wasn't an elevator for the upstairs floors and the floor to the annex was uneven with little ups & downs. Also, in coming up the handicapped ramp out front, there wasn't a connection to to porch. You had to come in through the uneven surface of the event/sunroom.
My other comment was that the first room that I was given reeked of smoke (not their fault) and they quickly gave me another room upstairs and carried my suitcase up for me.

My stay was wonderful, from the minute I checked in, until I left. Staff was very welcoming and assisted me getting up a few stairs with my walker and bags, Ate dinner on the patio. Had a wonderful server, Wisteria, who was very attentive. The tomato basil bisque was delicious as well as the shrimp and grits. For dessert I had a different kind of carrot cake-not the usual one. Ate breakfast there also. I would stay there again if I was in the area. It was right in downtown where all the shops were within walking distance,

The room did not have a television, which I assumed was a standard room thing, so was disappointed & the floors were very noisy. The rest of the hotel was very nice and nostalgic.

The hotel is very quaint. The staff was amazing in every single way. Everyone was awesome. Great location. We ate at the restaurant and it wasn’t that good but we were impressed how accommodating they were with my husband who got sick and had to stay at the hotel. Will come back next year!

It was wonderful time! In walking distance from the downtown. There was a BBQ cook off and music at the casebook the property! The Romano the first floor give that older vibe which we love! The rooms on first floor is spacious and big. There’s no tv in the downstairs rooms. But it bears walking up the stairs bc there’s no elevator. Overall 5 stars

No TV in the room , only one chair in the room

We are frequent travelers and went for a couple's night away. They have a place that could be lovely, but they are missing many things. On check out, drop the "people steal our keys" and have people sign the key waiver without the comment that makes you wonder if others are still walking around with your room key. The room was so cold (no thermostat) that we literally were freezing (avoid room 4 or bring a parka). No TV of telephone is fine, but no hangers in closet? Really? Food was good but service was very poor and people were loud and drunk outside our room until 11 PM in courtyard. We wanted to sleep in, but awoke to a fire alarm at 7:10 AM on Saturday. Apology, no way! They are invested in explaining why things are, not fixing them. This is my first negative review in years.

Cute, but could use a few upgrades.

Nice, clean older hotel, a quick walk to downtown Black Mountain
4.4
I was unaware ther was no television in the room an I had hoped to watch some of the olympics
4.4
The room was very small, doors were thin, bathroom fan didn’t work and window could not be opened even though it had a rotating handle. But honestly that was all small potatoes. This was a pretty good hotel and was definitely worth the money. It offered high end and low end rooms and we got a very cheap one. But if all you need was a clean place to sleep, this is perfect. Restaraunt had very good food, bar had very good drinks, staff was friendly. The location was just outside the town center but it’s a small town, so it was very walkable to everywhere.

I loved everything about it!

We loved our stay and would definitely recommend this sweet little inn for future stays!

Staff was great. Cool historic hotel with charm.

This hotel has really declined since the last time we stayed here. While we love historic spaces, this one is not being taken care of at all. Room was dusty, the bedspread had holes in it, the ceiling was stained, the shower curtain was disgusting and moldy, the Shampoo and shower gel were empty.
We asked for housekeeping on our second night but never got any housekeeping so we had to dig in the closet to find some towels to use.
The grounds are worn. There are no flowers blooming, and there should be.
We love Black Mountain, but highly doubtful we would stay here again.

Like many travelers we arrived in the area after a long drive. Our plans were to attend a show in nearby Asheville. Beginning at the 4:00 check in time, a very loud Caribbean duo began playing right below our room on the hotel front porch and continued for over an hour. This made it impossible to take a nap before our evening plans. The only response from the front desk was a half hearted apology The room's air conditioner could not cool the room and the fan in the closet was caked in filth. We dined in the hotel and an ordered medium rare burger came super well done. They also managed to serve the wrong selected eggs at breakfast. All in all I cannot recommend this hotel.

We enjoyed our stay, found the 1919 vintage hotel comfortable and well maintained. We’ll stay here again. One note, the floors and our bed was creaky, but expected in a 100 year old building.

Staff was very helpful.

Absolutely terrible

Really neat hotel with a lot of history. Great staff and super convenient to walk anywhere you would want to go

Loved the rocking chairs on the porch to sit and enjoy the amazing Mountain View. The food at the restaurant was delicious and the specialty drinks at the bar were outstanding.

Wonderful location, great service- hope to go back!

I liked that it's an historical property conveniently located downtown with a pleasant restaurant.
I disliked the condition of the property. including parking, room lighting, TVs, AC, and breakfast service. It was especially offsetting that we found used towels on the back of the bathroom door and our deadbolt door lock was inoperative.

They said once I was leaving for the night I had a curfew and needed to be back by 11. When I pulled up at 10:30 the girl was in her car already leaving. She said oh I decided to leave early today. Plus the bathrooms are not clean.
4.4
The place is clean and obviously old but the fact i didnt know there was no tv in the room until i got in it was annoying. Small space, no remote for the the fan even tho i asked for one and was told room service would bring it to me but never happened.

Delightful inn and wonderful location!

The staff were lovely and very accommodating. The inner courtyard adds a great touch with an outdoor dining area. The room was clean, small. The whole building smells of old wood, but you get used to it. It is a bit like staying in a museum. Great location, walking distance to downtown. We would stay again.

Most of my discomfort was due to my sloppiness in not reading the description. I went on a solo trip where I didn't intend on leaving my room since I've been to Black Mountain several times and just needed to relax. There wasn't anyone at the check in for about 10 minutes. There wasn't an elevator which normally would have been fine, but I wasn't feeling great and 3 flights of stairs upon arrival without any assistance was rough. There wasn't a chair or a desk in the room, and there was only one nightstand which didn't offer a lot of space, not an adequate shelf in the bathroom for items. There wasn't a tv in the room which I didn't even realize because it's so common, I didn't think to look. There wasn't a refrigerator or a microwave, or coffee maker and to get ice, you have to ask for it downstairs. There isn't any way to adjust the temperature of the room which was very cold the first night, and there was a lot of hallway noise my last night. This would be a great place if you were there to explore the town, I honestly think I should have explored the site more thoroughly. The shower had a lot of water pressure which I enjoyed. I did get a burger from the restaurant downstairs and it was cooked really well.

Great place to stay, charming and clean.

I had one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had at this stay. Hunter was exceptional, thank you again for everything!
4.4
A quaint hotel with a personal touch of service. Each room is uniquely decorated and has touches from the past. There needs to be air condition/heat controls in each room and more plugs. There are no televisions or refrigerators in the room.
4.4
TV didn't work. Loss of CATV signal. Toilet seat was loose. Shower was nice and room was quiet
4.4
Great location; completely charming; attentive staff; you could hear EVERY movement from the room upstairs

Overall, we were disappointed with this property. We had hoped to experience the ambience and beauty of a long time established historic hotel. Yet for whatever reasons, be it poor ownership/management, investment in the hotel or laziness, the property was not well kept with many areas in disrepair. The only employee on duty during our visit was seen lounging in the common areas most of the time.
This Hotel does not appear to know its identity. During our two night stay, we observed an extensive display of modern art (same artist) and “grunge” style music played by the only employee present.
Our room was stark in design, the bed frame was noisy, the shower hot water faucet was installed backwards (leading us to believe there was no hot water), the AC unit thermostat was located down the hallway and controlled the climate for at least six rooms and there was little extra bedding (one pillow w/o case and no blanket).
We know this review sounds harsh yet this Hotel is in need of renovation on all levels. One employee did inform us that a new group of owners have purchased the Hotel and there are plans for complete renovation and updating. We can only hope that is true and will look for it to happen as we will probably visit Black Mountain again in the future.
On a positive note, though our room did not have a private coffee maker, there was fresh brewed in the lobby each morning.
