About this apartment rental
The Gryphon is located above one of the most iconic coffee shops in Charlottesville, be aware that noise from the coffee shop can be heard in the unit. This is a 2 bedroom, 2 full bathroom flat with views overlooking the downtown mall from the spacious living area. A skylight floods the kitchen area with light! This lovely recently renovated apartment also has a laundry room with full size washer and dryer as well as a covered balcony at the back.
The location can't be beat in the middle of the downtown action! We like to note to future guests that this is a popular area (especially on the weekends) and the noise level on the Downtown Mall may be higher particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings. *Please note, no parking is included with this rental, the most economical option is the Water Street parking garage a few blocks away.

Loved our stay. Only downside was noise from the coffee shop below. Music started at 6:30 and ran all day-it was actually as loud in the rental unit as the coffee shop!

The property is well located, comfortable and clean. It was very difficult to find, however, as the doorway is in the pedestrian mall where no cars are allowed. There are many homeless people nearby - and even immediately in front of the door to the apartment late one evening. The person did move when we asked. Others were grateful when we shared food with them.

This place couldn’t be more perfect - right in the heart of Charlottesville with all the amenities and space you could want. The coffee shop does enjoy some morning music, but the experience was phenomenal.

I’ve never given a rating below 5 stars, but I don’t think that it would be fair to not warn potential renters about this place. It did not feel safe.
1. One of the rental managers came into the house unannounced (zero phone call or communication through VRBO) and knocked on the bedroom door of my daughters in their bedroom while they were asleep. He never gave us a heads up that he was going to come over for a repair (we didn’t request anything). Imagine a property manager just walking into your VRBO unannounced knocking on your teenage daughters’ bedroom door.
2. Every city center has a homeless population; it’s part of the city center. But this place has a glass entrance door, and one homeless man urinated on the door one evening (we unfortunately saw it). The solution is to not have a glass door where the homeless can see into us. And it really needs a second door for extra security.
But even with a second door, you aren’t safe since the property management team walks in unannounced.
This just isn’t a safe property. The good news is that you can lock yourself in the bedrooms at night while you sleep, and we did so that.

We really enjoyed the space and the location is so great, however as others have mentioned before the music from the coffee shop is loud and we wouldn’t mind it so much except it starts extremely early. We also experienced a situation where we had to call the police twice because there were homeless people outside being very loud and threatening and the door is made up mostly of glass and we felt unsafe.

The Gryphon is a nice apartment. It was a roomy space considering the location. Two bathrooms is a plus. The first night of our visit was a Saturday and at 6:30 AM on Sunday morning the music from the coffee shop below started LOUD and sustained. It wasn't what I would call mellow coffee shop Norah Jones type music either. Thumping music. The next morning the music wasn't as loud so it may have just been the employees that Sunday morning. We didn't mind the music in the evenings. I gave "Location" a three star only because of the noise downstairs and the homeless community that would congregate outside this popular coffee shop. It's actually a good location as it pertains to the Historic store front mall area. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.

We loved the aesthetic of the Gryphon! Perfect amount of space for 2 couples in a centralized location right on the downtown mall. We walked to dinner and right downstairs for coffee each morning. Exactly what we needed for our “parents weekend and wine trip!” Would definitely recommend

Do not go to the coffee shop downstairs. They play lousy music that shakes the floor. You really need to crank music in the living room so you don’t hear it. You can’t hear it in the bedroom, though. Nice place but noisy. We were there at Christmas and heard every Christmas song ever written.

The coffee shop was a little loud but not too bad. It was a great condo. We loved the location of it very easy to walk to all sorts of things.

Absolutely loved staying here! Super clean, well decorated and super spacious. The spot was absolutely perfect, we walked up and down Main Street enjoyed the shops and restaurants. The coffee smell in the unit was amazing and I’m not a coffee drinker! You can hear the music in the coffee shop below as everyone stated it’s not super loud and they play soft jazz- it added to the experience! We will def be back!

The property was in a great location. It was central in downtown mall. Many restaurants and shops. Numerous wineries near.
A flight of stairs takes you to the apartment. There is no elevator. It is located right in the mall and above a coffee shop making the unit noisy. I knew that before I booked but it was louder than I expected. Music from coffee shop woke us up every morning.
The apartment itself is very nice and updated. The beds are very comfortable.
Even though the place was noisy it was the perfect location. I would stay there again but with a white noise maker in my bedroom.
The managers of the unit were very helpful. Checkin and check out was seamless.
Overall a great stay.

The Gryphon was exactly as described online. The location was amazing and ease of access to dining and downtown options couldn’t have been better.
The front door has to be unlocked and locked with a physical key each time you come or go which was a little bit of hassle because there is no deadbolt you can just flip when you come in the door. Lots of transients in the downtown mall area at night but we were not bothered.
The amenities were exactly as described and perfectly sufficient for the girls wine weekend we needed.

The property was completely accurate per web-sit. Wonderful condo right in the heart of downtown. Check in was a bit hard (trying to work the lock) but we finally made in it. The stairs are a bit rough when carrying heavy luggage up, all minor though. It is a wonderful VRBO and beautiful condo that is filled with lovely antiques.

Everything was as advertised. Great location. The access to the social club/work space was a nice benefit too.

We had a great time at The Gryphon! Everything worked out really well and the location was unbeatable!

AC is a little iffy but beautiful place.
4.3
The apartment is in a very convenient location, very spacious and has everything you need. The only draw back is parking.
4.3
The Gryphon is well-maintained, clean, spacious and in a great location on the downtown mall in Charlottesville. It also comes with access to The Common House, which has a great little rooftop bar.
4.3
Good location for walking to restaurants. Coffee shop below was very loud very early. An ugly mess was in front of our door for a day. Needed tissues. Probably will not rent there again.
4.3
Our stay at the Gryphon was very nice. Perfect location with lots of restaurants and shopping right outside the door. The apartment is stocked with essential starter items, like paper products, soaps, etc. Beds were comfortable. Good Wi-Fi. Apartment was very clean.
Two issues that should be noted are:
First, the check-in instructions didn't mention anything about parking. I had to call Stay Charlottesville after hours and leave a message. They were very quick to return my call and advise on where we should park. You can park for 15 min. on a side street to unload your belongings. Then we parked a couple of blocks away at the Water Street garage, which is $12/day, and not included in the price of the rental. Also, the lock on the door is somewhat tricky. You really need to jiggle the key around in order to get it to turn completely to unlock.
Second issue was the coffee shop below the unit. We heard the music from the time they opened (7AM) until they locked up for the night (10PM?). We could always tell what songs were being played-- that's how loud it was. We could hear them grinding the coffee at 6:30AM. Most of the time it sounded like there was a big party going on in the shop, but it turns out that just a couple of people talking makes it sound like there are a lot more people in the shop. Just suffice it to say the floors are very thin, and you'll hear everything that goes on downstairs. But at least the coffee was good and couldn't have been more convenient.
Other than those things, it was a lovely stay!

This place is very nice! We spent the entire two days just walking around the mall, eating, shopping and listening to music. The car was in the parking garage, and we really were happy just exploring “the Mall” and not having to drive anywhere.
It is located above a coffee shop, so you have the aroma of coffee all day!!
It was a little noisy from the employees at the Coffeeshop in the mornings.
The hall bath did‘t have anywhere to place your toiletries. And the coffee maker was a type not one was familiar with, so we did‘t use it. We ended up making hot tea, and having coffee later.

The Gryphon was the perfect home base for a gathering with family and college friends. The location was in a great location on the downtown mall, close to hotels and restaurants. The kitchen was well stocked and the apartment very well appointed and well kept. Access to the Common House (right behind the apartment) was a nice amenity.
Thanks for a great stay and we look forward to coming again.

Great place. Great location. Great trip!
