Sheets smelled musty. Bathroom was awful. Breakfast not available. Empty condom packet on top of wardrobe……..avoid if you can

Comfortable room and bed.
Clean bed and bathroom but some cobwebs up high in room and dust on lampshade.
Won’t stop me returning

Location was excellent for access to the town centre and public transport. Check in was straightforward.
The room was very basic, as expected so no problem, but concerned about the cleanliness when my tea cup was stuck to the saucer (face down) and was dirty, and a big clump of hair on the floor outside the shower.
Single bed, comfy enough

Liked the Georgian elegance of the building, the entrance and spiral staircase. After complaining about mattress it was replaced and the room was cleaned. Manager was helpful and efficient. Room was a good size. Its best advantage was easy walking distance from the town centre.
We were not informed about the disco on Saturday night until booking was confirmed by which point the deposit was not refundable.
Disliked the very limited breakfast menu as no breakfast places nearby. The room was airless and looked onto a brick wall. Both chairs were uncomfortable.

The room wasn’t as clean as I would like, the shower door had evidently not been cleaned in a while, the toilet wasn’t the cleanest and neither was the bathroom sink, the floors look like they hadn’t had a clean in a little while too… and the room decor was very outdated. I paid £170 for 1 night, granted it was whilst a popular festival was on but it was worth £40 at best. I hope they deep clean the rooms better in future! And look at upgrading the decor, as well as looking at their prices, even during popular seasons. The downstairs had a nice vibe though, and the restaurant looked nice.

An old room but very clean. Could leave our bags in the room despite being very early. Close to heart of Reading.

Lovely welcoming property in a great location. The room had everything I needed and more. Would highly recommend and would stay again!

Decent enough for couple of nights , room was fine and close to town .. , could do with aircon but had a fan , no lift but managed ok

The DJ wasn't a problem as he stopped fairly early. The hotel is incredibly dated - fair play to whoever photoshopped the room pics. The hotel smells strongly of the Indian food from downstairs. The staff are not particularly helpful. The room (suite) had not been decorated since the late 1970s and was filthy with hairs all over the place and a filthy mattress. Would not recommend.

Not worth the price

Overall a good stay for the price. Staff were friendly however announced our room number out loud upon check in - which is unsafe for two women travelling.
Room was nice and spacious, shower was good as well. Our room however had some industrial-sounding drilling/humming noise on and off all night. Unsure if this was the building next door or the hotel itself.
If you want a short trip on a budget I would recommend. However if you’re travelling solo might be unsafe as they like announcing your room number out loud.

There was loud music until 11:30, the check in process wasn’t very easy and the carpet in the room was full of hair

The room was amazing! Great size, very clean and a incredibly comfortable bed. Definitely will be staying there again!

Lovely bar and restaurant area. When going to the room these are not to the same standard as the downstairs. The room we had, had a flashing light in the bathroom, moldy shower curtain and handle broken on one of the draws. Bed was comfy enough and shower nice and powerful

Generally safe and convenient, limited facilities but staff are accommodating if you ask for water/ iron etc. Decor is a little dated (carpets/ curtains) and shower curtains need replacing. Otherwise a comfortable and clean bed and lovely staff!

Quaint little hotel with comfortable rooms.

Generally nice and staff were pleasant. Rooms/ bathrooms decent enough but bathrooms (baths/shower/ shower curtain) just need a little updating.

It was so so small, i could touch the walls with arms out! The bed was tiny, like sleeping in a cot, and the staircase is so narrow, and spiral, it was impossible to get my luggage up. Expensive, outdated and a definite no no for me.

Hostess was wonderful & accommodating. Room was a bit noisy at night & creaky beds.

The property was very convenient for me after a long work day. The room was spacious and clean, although paint peeling off the walls and ceiling. I was expecting a TV in the room and there wasn't, but didn't really matter to me.
In the evening I went to the Calico Bar & Restaurant after having been told the food was good - I wasn't disappointed 🙂. And the staff made me feel extremely welcome and 'cared for'.
Breakfast was good (although I didn't like the oiled toast) and lovely service.
As a single female who doesn't travel and hardly ever stays in hotels, I was a bit apprehensive, but the care of the staff made me feel safe and welcome.

Walls are paper thin. Another guest came home around 2am (probably drunk) and proceeded to be sick/ wretch for about an hour. Did I really have to pay for that experience? On the positive side the downstairs area with the bar is fine and the food and service were good. Rooms clean but aging - you get what you pay for.

I used to stay here back when it was the Great Expectations, so I knew pretty much what to expect. They've completely gutted the restaurant downstairs (which looks really good, but I didn't get a chance to try it), but not yet done anything with the accommodation.
So, yeah, it's a little tired. No hotel staff around when I checked in so had to go to the restaurant where I was handed a keycard with no further word or information. The room was clean apart from a partially-flushed toilet on arrival. The bed was very uncomfortable and seemed to consist of springs and little padding, not that I minded much as by the time I went to bed I was suitably numbed by alcohol.
My (very small) double room wasn't noisy, had tea coffee and water, a TV, and an ensuite with a decent hot shower. Everything I needed for a comfortable-enough budget overnight stay on my own.

Our Stay at the Great expectations was marvellous staff were super friendly and even under building works on the ground floor they running perfectly.
My only complaint was the bed was a bit outdate and either time me or my wife moved it felt like you weer going to be thrown out.
Apart from that i love it cant wait to see it after the works are completed. Room 29 fyi
