The hotel design is incredible- I hadn't realised that the property had been a prison - unique and interesting and all decoration is to a high standard. Rooms are very comfortable. 1 downside- we arrived late after being delayed due to the most horrendous electrical storm and had called ahead to say we were going to be late and ask if the restaurant would still be open (or we would stop on the way). We were told that it would be open until 11. We eventually arrived at 10. We got food but the bar menu was essentially bruschetta or beef tartare. My colleague is gluten intolerant and asked if she could have a omelette but was told no. We asked for dessert at 10.50 and were told that the kitchen was closed. The staff were professional but there was no flexibility for very tired, hungry travellers who have to look to the hotel as a home from home when they are away. It was a bit of a shame. When you travel a lot what makes things easier and the difference from a good experience to a great experience is empathy.

We arrived late and we understand that the only menu available was very small. However I asked if an omelette could me made. I could see at least 5 people working in the kitchen, however was told that this was not possible. I don't eat gluten and really there was not a lot on this menu to eat. I asked for a quiet room pre book in but was put next to a busy road.

Very nice and clean rooms.
Poor customer focus by staff. Some were not willing to speak English. No support provided when both of the electric charging points for the car were occupied by two gasoline cars. So when traveling with an electric car, do not count on having a charging spot available.

Fascinating hotel, beautifully converted. Fabulous restaurant and terrific service. Lovely big room with view over park (try and stay in these rooms if you can). Only negative comment is, for a such a large room and bathroom, please design some bathroom bench space, guests have more than a toothbrush.

A former historic prison decommissioned in 2009 this hotel provides an outstanding experience standing out in the area. Very upscale. Dining and bar are excellent. And doors open from both sides! - their tagline. You learn a lot about the failed 1848 revolution trying to install democracy.

The young lady on check in seemed unfamiliar and was having some issues with system- she was very apologetic / friendly. There didn’t seem to be anyone she could get advice from.
The room was not in an old cell - we may have been upgraded to a suite? However there were very low sloping beams close to the bed which might be a problem for someone taller.
The main issue however was that we could not work out how to completely turn off the lights - I contacted reception about 22.30 but the man could not understand me? The only solution was to remove the card from the slot which turned off all the power including the lights but also opened the automatic window blinds in the sloping windows above the bed!
When I questioned in the morning - clearly not the first time they have been asked - I was shown that you apparently press one switch once and all the lights slowly go off? It was explained that for some reason there was only a security guard on duty the previous evening which was he couldn’t understand what I was asking?
A very nice hotel spoilt by lack of training for staff but not by staff who were very friendly but didn’t know how to help.

Hotel Liberty is a stunning example of what renovating a unique building into a hotel can achieve. The design throughout is sympathetic, yet innovative and the bedrooms are beautiful spaces, decorated to the highest of standards with clever nods towards the building’s former life as a working prison. All staff were attentive without being intrusive, and clearly communicated and worked well as a team. If you own a hotel and want to understand how it should be run - stay here for two nights and you’ll experience everything you need to know to have a 5* rating.
The hotel’s restaurant menu has a good variety of dishes without being complicated, and each one is presented to the highest of standards. We had the set menu which was reasonably priced and great value. Portion sizes were good, and every part of every dish tasted simply exquisite.
We were delighted with everything about our stay except the bedroom temperature due to the lack of air conditioning. The staff explained that the designers believed the thick brick walls would keep the whole building cool, but in fact, given the heatwave this summer, it was uncomfortably hot. To combat this, each room has a Dyson fan, but we ended up asking for a second as the temperature was still too high to sleep well. This is the only reason I cannot give Hotel Liberty a 5* rating. Everything else about this hotel is perfect and I would thoroughly recommend that you stay here - especially once the air conditioning is installed!
