About this farm stay rental

Rhiw Felen is a beautiful, secluded farmhouse located near the source of the River Mawddach. A large, traditionally built stone house, it combines its 150 year old heritage - some slate floors, wood burners, wooden walls - with all the expected contemporary facilities - 2 fully equipped bathrooms, dishwasher and washing machine, Calor gas Aga.

LOCAL AREA

It sits on the public road for easy access and is surrounded by some of the best walking country in Eryri, as we now call Snowdonia. You walk in to this every time you come out of the front door. The atmosphere inside is more family home than boutique. The house is fully equipped and spacious with a large living room/kitchen and a separate parlour/dining room with a large dining table and benches for up to 12 people, as well as a couch and armchairs for enjoying the wood burner.

HOUSE LAYOUT

There are 3 bedrooms with double beds, a bedroom with bunks and a single bed and a sleeping loft with 2 single beds. Accessible from an outside staircase at the back of the house is a large room with a panoramic view down the valley, suitable for activities - it has a table tennis table - and relaxing/hanging out.

UNPLUGGED TRANQUILITY

There is currently no mobile signal in the valley. The house has a landline payphone but no internet connection - over the years, our guests have told us they value getting away from the everyday and prefer the place without internet access. The cafe at T H Roberts in Dolgellau has free wifi and is a big place where there is always space and is an essential part of a stay at Rhiw Felen for their cakes and Welsh rarebit.

What everyone feels when staying here is the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful spot seeping into them and the pressures and tensions of normal life disappearing.

ACTIVITIES

Of course, there is lots to do for those who prefer a more activity filled holiday - walking, mountain climbing and swimming in the river are all accessible from the house and the Coed y Brenin mountian bike trails are a mile and a half away. The Coed y Brenin visitor centre when you can hire bikes and follow bike and walking trails through the forest is 15 mins drive.
A host of attractions and activities locally for children of all ages as well as culture and history seekers are within an hour's drive - The Ffestiniog Railway, Llechwedd Caverns, Torrent Walk, Barmouth beach, Harlech Castle and many more!

SPECIAL QUIRKS

It is important that guests know we do not provide bedding or towels, you have to bring them with you. This is reflected in the price.

NB There are no fences around the fields in the valley so dogs must be under control at all times. The farmer has made it clear that he cannot guarantee the safety of any dog worrying the sheep

Ned was very helpful before we arrived and made the check in process very easy. This isn't the place to stay if you want modern luxury, but the cottage is very charming and in a beautiful location - we loved having our morning cuppa on the bench outside looking at the hills and sheep. The teenagers survived lack of internet due to the games room, and we enjoyed connecting again as a family. There were 4 adults and 3 teenagers, and we had plenty of space. Thank you, we would like to return in the future

We know the area very well but hadn’t come across this slice of beauty. We loved the rustic character, lack of signal and WiFi and enjoyed staying in this welcoming cottage. All the bathrooms function well and the aga is a warm bonus. Ned was very helpful too, we will be back!

Well)) location of the house was amazing! Compleatly remote. Away from everyone, no neighbours around. That’s what we were looking for. The property it self is very old but clean. Rooms nice size. Kitchen fully equipped with anything you need. There’s a play room with darts and ping pong table, nice to spend time during the evenings and kids loved it. Would be definitely coming back

I stayed with 8 other guests at Neds house and we all really enjoyed our stay. Every member of the group commented to me what a wonderful short break away they had. The location is wonderful and so there are so many amazing walks as soon as you step outside the front door of the home. Ned was extremely helpful with any questions. Thank you for sharing your house with us Ned, will definitely book again in the near future!

Great place to get away from the rat race for a while, the house has a real charm and it’s nice that Ned share’s his family retreat with others, at a very reasonable price compared to other holiday lets! The house is in an amazing location that certainly grows on you over your holiday. Just don’t expect any phone signal, tv ect. There’s lot of games and exploring to keep everyone occupied tho.

There are a lot more positives to write about than negatives. We were extremely lucky with the weather - I don’t think it would have been the same in the rain! Spacious house (6 adults and 3 children), and amazing outside space. The children paddled in the stream/river below and the views are breathtaking. A little hard to find initially, despite the detailed instructions from Ned! The wood burners worked really well in the colder evenings. Shower (downstairs) amazing and nicely refurbished. The children loved the annexe at the side of the house (their play room) and a huge bbq was provided (you’ll need charcoal). Thank you for providing us with a wonderful base.
