About this farm stay rental
Welcome to “Barn Owl”. This exquisitely renovated 19TH century carriage house is in the heart of the historic district of Blue Hill, but set back from the street in a very private setting. An elegant and comfortable home with a large, modern kitchen that opens to the great room, it easily accommodates large gatherings. Centrally located, you can walk to Blue Hill’s eclectic stores & restaurants, library, playgrounds, or just sit on the rocks overlooking Blue Hill Bay. It is only a short drive to swimming beaches and local hikes, Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor, the working waterfront in picturesque Stonington and historical Castine, home of Maine Maritime Academy. Venture out and explore all that Downeast Maine has to offer, or just relax in the peace and quiet of our quintessential New England seaside village.
Barn Owl was renovated and furnished with family and friends in mind. There is plenty of space to spread out in the 2,700 sq. ft. home, with enough privacy for quiet time as well. The original post & beam framing was exposed in the renovation process, and many hitches, hooks, and other hardware from the pre-Civil War carriage house days are still visible. It is full of historical interest and furnishings include many wonderful antiques.
The spacious kitchen is fully equipped with topline appliances including dual convection wall ovens, a gas cooktop, oversized refrigerator, dishwasher, and a farmhouse sink. The cupboards are loaded with dishes and glassware for 12. Some basic pantry items, spices, coffee, and teas also provided.
Each floor has its own bedroom/bath suite. In addition to the fully equipped modern kitchen, the 1st floor has a barn-sized great room including 2 separate seating areas to comfortably watch TV or have quiet conversations, and a spacious dining area. The 1st floor also has a ½ bath and a laundry room, as well as a large master suite with a queen bed, and bath with heated floors and a walk-in shower.
Wind up the stairs to the 2nd floor (the lower hayloft, originally) to comfortable sitting area, a closet full of toys, games and puzzles, and a bedroom suite with a 2nd TV, 2 twin beds, a comfortable single pullout couch, and a tub/shower in the bath. This suite would work well as a children’s hideaway, but the beds are full-sized and comfortable for adults as well!
Climb to the third floor (the upper hayloft, originally) to another large bedroom suite equipped with queen bed, daybed with trundle, and a soaking tub in the bathroom. The ceilings of the 3rd floor are the original barn board (well insulated above) and there are shelves packed with books for all ages.
Outside of the house, there is a large patio with a gas grill and lots of seating, a wonderful flower garden, a lawn that is perfect for croquet, and stone stairs leading to our wooded lot.
We supply all you might need for a relaxing vacation, from a stocked pantry to beach towels. There is a Pack’n’Play crib & a high chair on sight. If there are other things you might require (such as a lobster cooker), please ask, as we may be able to provide them. If you would like help designing your Downeast adventure, we will gladly work with you to plan excursions that fit you interests and abilities from hikes in the Acadia to ferryboat rides to explore the islands in our bays.

We loved staying at the Barn Owl in Blue Hill. The location was perfect - just off of Main Street with cute shops and restaurants, nearby grocery store, and easy access to many beautiful coastal spots in the Down East area. The house is incredibly well-maintained and comfortable. With four adults and three kids, we had plenty of space. The kitchen was well-stocked and organized, making family meals easy and pleasant to prepare. We hope to visit again in the future!

Our group of 6 (3 couples) really enjoyed our stay at Barn Owl. It’s a beautiful house , very comfortable and charming. It is located close to the downtown area but is in a quiet setting. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals and the downstairs area is spacious and gave us plenty of room to spend time together . The house is large enough to also get away from people when needed, lol. I brought a croquet game and we played in the yard and sat outside and enjoyed the patio—it was perfect. We had a problem with the door lock initially, but Dennis came to the house and helped us immediately. All in all-a perfect family reunion in a wonderful setting. Thank you Kate & Dennis!

We had a wonderful time staying at Kate and Dennis' house with our two young kids (5 and 1.5 years). This was a great way to be near our Maine family and also have the feeling of a luxurious vacation home in one of the best areas of Maine. The house is walking distance to the library (with a great children's room!) and all of Blue Hill's shops including Out on a Whimsey Toys, as well as the Town Park, which has a lovely playground and small swimming beach. We saw the weekly summer Flash in the Pans steel drum performance, drove to Brooksville for pizza night at Tinder Hearth, and went hiking along Harriman Point in Brooklin ... then enjoyed short drives back to the house for naptime/bedtime. The house itself has everything you need to settle in and feel at home -- the kitchen tools and appliances are very high quality, and we grilled/cooked a birthday dinner for my mom and felt like we were in our own kitchen! The large downstairs sitting areas are great for meals, games, and family time, and the second floor can easily be a "kid zone" with its own game table (and great game selection!), couch, TV, and built-in twin beds. Our toddler slept in the quiet third-floor bedroom, and even though it is far from the first-floor primary bedroom, the baby monitor signal was able to reach our room (a separate bathroom and additional trundle bed on this floor would also make it great for grandparents, more kids, etc.) Thank you, Kate and Dennis, we hope to return next summer!

Nicely appointed and common space was very useful for gathering before during and after meals. Hot water would run out after a few showers though and upstairs bedrooms ran a bit warm for July nights but doable with the windows, fans and window ac units. Wish there was a little more outside accommodations as our group of 6 were a little crowded around the one table for 4. Would recommend to others

The perfect place for relaxing while being close to all we wanted to do. Seeing deer in the yard was a great touch too.

This is the most well-equipped home we have ever rented - and we have been doing vacation rentals for 19 years now. Kate and Dennis have thought of absolutely everything a traveler might need from extra beach towels and bedding, to all the cooking spices and extras, right down to a first aid kit and pain killers left in the bathroom. They were responsive immediately for any issues and live close which came in handy when I could not figure out how to get the door to lock. They are thoughtful and considerate hosts, and this house was perfect for our group of 7 (family of 4, two grandparents, and one adult aunt).

Our family enjoyed our stay at Barn Owl. Dennis and Kate are wonderful hosts. We arrived late and they were so generous and helpful to get us eggs, milk, bread, granola ready for us when we arrived. House is beautiful as described and loved the kitchen with everything we needed to cook most of our meals. Blue Hill is charming beautiful and quiet, we definitely come back.

The space was just as shown in the pictures, perfect for 2 families of 4 each, with space to gather and take a break when needed. Blue Hill is an excellent location, with a reasonable drive to Acadia and other small towns with kayaking and trails. We hope to make it back soon!

This home was absolutely exquisite! We fell in love at the front door. The architectural details, historical significance and luxurious appointments throughout made this house an exceptional backdrop for our time in Blue Hill. The gourmet kitchen with oversized island and top of the line appliances made meal prep so much fun and was fully stocked with everything a chef could ask for. The kitchen opened to the great room which was beautifully furnished and so comfortable for gathering with family. The barn wood floors were glistening with the sunlight that streamed through the Palladian windows. The bathrooms were all beautiful with marble topped vanities and classic period tiles. Sumptuous! We enjoyed barbequing on the bluestone patio and tossing a ball in the yard overlooking the picturesque wooded lot. All in all it was a 10+ experience and we highly recommend Barn Owl. The owners thought of every little detail to ensure an exceptional stay for their guests. The house was immaculately kept, beautifully decorated, and centrally located in town. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful place to stay.
