Otranto, between sea and history
Otranto was born as a Messapian center, later Roman and Byzantine to then undergo the Aragonese dominion, of which significant traces remain with the presence of the great castle, around which the whole city has developed over time.
The historic center of Otranto is among the most beautiful villages in Italy, and among its streets and alleys you can breathe the scent of the history that characterized it.
In the fifteenth century Otranto suffered the assault of the Turkish fleet, which found the resistance of the people of Otranto, intending not to yield to the request for abjuration made by the Muslims, who in response killed 800 citizens on the Colle della Minerva, those who today represent the Santi Martiri di Otranto, whose remains are preserved in the splendid Cathedral of Otranto, of Norman origin.
In the same Cathedral, of Santa Maria Annunziata, you can see the largest mosaic in Italy, the Tree of Life, which extends along the aisles, made by the monk Pantaleone.
Otranto is also characterized by other churches that tell its story: Church of San Pietro, Church of the Madonna Dell'altomare, which dominates the seafront from above, Church of Santa Maria dei Martiri, Church of Santa Maria del Passo.
In the area there are also several crypts and catacombs dating back to the 10th / 12th century.
The Aragonese Castle of Otranto, with its irregular pentagonal plan, towers, ramparts and moat today represents one of the most evocative historical and artistic attractions for tourists who come to Otranto.
There are also several towers on the Otranto coast that served as a defensive bulwark against Saracen invasions: Torre Sant'emiliano, Torre Santo Stefano and Torre del Serpe, once used as a lighthouse, which today also stands out in the coat of arms of Otranto
