Fabulous furnishings and upgrades to this already beautiful house.
Here is the base of operation for your Big Island adventure. Mika Kai is a beautiful oceanfront home in a tropical Hawaiian setting. It sits on lava bluff about 15 feet above the crashing waves. The oceanfront pool, hot tub and huge lanai give you a private resort all your own. This beautifully decorated home is not your ordinary vacation rental. Each bedroom is like your own hotel room, with en-suite private bath.
Fully fenced and gated, it has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 stories, over 3000 square feet, and right on the blue Pacific. This is a super comfortable home for your family group. The layout of the house is: 4 spacious Bedrooms – all 4 ensuite, each with its own private bathroom. The bedrooms are situated as such: downstairs has a master suite with a King Bed and a Japanese soak tub; a second bedroom downstairs has 2 Twin Beds. Upstairs has 2 more bedrooms both with Queen Beds. A second living room that works as an office area is located upstairs. This area is open to downstairs, very dramatic. On the main level, under the soaring ceilings, you will find an expansive living room with lots of comfortable seating, a large fully stocked and equipped modern kitchen, a dining room with seating for 8, a 5th bathroom with shower. A washing machine and clothes dryer including laundry soap for your use.
At Mika Kai you will find guidebooks, Hawaii reef fish identification books, Big Island picture books, up-to-date pamphlets, and insider tips on secrets only known to the locals. Yet you may find that you wish to just sit on the lanai at Mika Kai and never leave. That’s okay too. For your enjoyment, we have beach towels, and various water flotation items. Pack your swimsuits and come on over!
You will love the surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area. Volcano National Park is approximately 45 minutes away. Great snorkeling is about 20 minutes. Waterfalls, nature hikes, champagne pond, steam vent caves, black sand beaches, surfing & boogie boarding, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rainforest are all nearby. Hilo is the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands. This is old Hawaii at its natural best. The whale watching from November through March from Mika Kai's huge lanai is some of the best you'll find in all the Islands.
Note: Mika Kai is in a residential neighborhood and to be good neighbors we do not rent the house for large parties or events. We do not allow more than a total of 8 people on the property at any one time. Quiet hours are from 9:00pm to 8:00am.
Security cameras on property for surveillance when property is vacant.
Guests will be asked to sign a rental agreement and liability form. Rate is based on guest count. Only the guests that are staying at the home are allowed at the home - no other visitors. Mahalo!

My vacation at Mika Kai was nothing short of amazing. My family and I did not end up traveling far from the home and spent every moment we could swimming in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub, and staring off into the beautiful ocean. The home was very large, spacious and comfortable and we had our space away from each other when needed and lots of places to gather when we wanted to be together. I felt like we were staying at a private mini resort!
The home was tastefully decorated, beds so comfortable, and the kitchen well stocked with all the appliances we needed.
We wish our stay had been longer but we will be back!

It’s a lovely location. It was very nice to sit on the deck and listen to the waves crash against the cliffs. The home was well stocked with linens. The kitchen had everything we needed for the few times we cooked. Our family of 8 was very comfortable and everyone loved the house.

Beautiful home. Perfect setting. Our family had the best time at this home. Layout was perfect for us. The pool and back yard was amazing. We saw whales and turtles from the porch. Host was most attentive. Anything we needed. Could not have been any better. Thanks

As advertised but even better.
The house is wonderfully appointed, comfortable and quiet.
The ocean view stretches for miles and the sunrises sublime. Pool and relaxing hot tub compliment a day of sightseeing.
Great spot for whale watching.
A needed respite from my Colorado snowy winter.
Location close enough to Hilo and Hawaii Volcano National Park but far enough away to enjoy privacy.
Ingrid and Debbie are perfect hosts - available and involved but unobtrusive.
If I could give six star review, I would.
I hope to return someday.

The property was very spacious for our group. The house could use some updates as the kitchen and bathrooms are a bit dated.

An oceanfront house in Hawaii? Fantastic! Mika Kai is a beautiful looking home, with a tropical front yard, and a lush, adjacent, empty lot. But, it’s the enormous ocean-facing deck and lanai with wonderful lava bluffs that really stole the show! Inside, there are plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms with many windows and patio doors to keep things cool. There were, unfortunately, some downsides for us. Finishes showed age, the layout was warrenlike, and different flooring suggested uncoordinated past remodels. Some windows and sliders were difficult to operate, and the AC units were too noisy to keep on. The garage couldn’t be used for secured parking, and the entry gate didn’t lock because the opener was broken, lowering our sense of security. Outside, cameras surrounded the house which limited our sense of privacy. The host never checked in to ask if we needed anything, unusual in our experience. The pool and hot tub had too much floating debris to feel confident about using these. Folks in the camper trailer two lots down were loud, and came over to hang out and fish in front of our deck, limiting our views and privacy. We saw a few roaches inside, the tree frogs were maddeningly loud at night (both island issues), and the beach-outing items provided were in too bad a shape to use. Having paid about the same for like rentals elsewhere on the Big Island we wondered if we paid too much for Mika Kai. Overall, the house is relaxing, with beautiful sunrises, and awesome vistas.

We had an awesome time at the property. Views were breathtaking. Very comfortable rooms and the pool definitely hit the spot after a long day of exploring. We loved Hilo town vibes and were still within driving distance to enjoy the Kona side as well. Overall a wonderful week and will definitely be back.

Beautiful and peaceful home with beautiful sunrises. Large and expansive deck to relax on. We had no issues with pool tiles cutting us as previous reviews have stated. Little problems kept coming up though: new router from cable company had to be installed, electrician turned off power to house, landscaper working during afternoon in (all windows are open around the house due to no air conditioning so there was no escaping the mower, blower and raking of rocks) and the DVD player not working. Communication with the owner was perfect, and quickly connected with them. Just kept having issues that kept it from being a relaxing stay. At the time of this writing -The house next door has some construction going on, but the company was being as quiet and respectful as they could be. Only issue that could have been avoided - To have a head's up when the landscaper and electrician is scheduled to come then you can schedule your time to explore the area while they can do their work around the property (3-4 hours)

We really enjoyed the house and the Big Island. We used a car to see many parts of the island. And we’re very happy to come home to a quiet house with a beautiful view. House could use a few updates but overall was the perfect size for 7 people, with all the amenities we could want.

Thank you for having us at your home. We had a wonderful time.

We loved our stay at this VRBO, we are a family of 7 that fit comfortably in this home. The house was clean and organized. We enjoyed great views of the ocean. I recommend you stay here.

We recently stayed at this beautiful house had a wonderful experience. The location of the house is amazing - on the lava cliffs right on the ocean with stunning views of the sea, dolphins and sea turtles. The pool was also a great addition and provided a perfect spot for relaxation and soaking up the sun.
The rooms were comfortable and spacious, and the house was equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. While the bathrooms were a bit outdated, they were clean and functional.
One thing to keep in mind is that the house is about a 30-minute drive from beautiful beaches in Hilo or the Kehena black sands beach, as well as shopping and restaurants.
Overall, we highly recommend this house for anyone looking for a peaceful and scenic vacation on Big Island Hawaii. The service was also very responsive and helpful, which made for an even better experience. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We stayed at Mika Kai for 7 very rainy days (our vacation just happened to align with a weather pattern known as a “Kona low”) and the only reason the vacation wasn’t ruined was because of this house. It was amazing! I was traveling with my family of 4, my parents and my sister and her husband. The house afforded us a wonderful gathering area as well as our own spaces to retreat to. We spent most of our time under the covered lanai watching the rain, playing in the pool and warming up in the hot tub. The oceanfront setting could not be more idyllic and we saw a whale or two pass by more days than not. The house and kitchen were very well stocked with anything that we may have needed. We would definitely return!

I was looking for a great place for a family vacation and Mika Kai was the perfect place.
Great having an A/C in each bedroom and the deck was wonderful to spread out, only downfall was no whales were spotted but spinner dolphins and turtles were seen.
Would come back in a heartbeat

We had such a great week here! Being on the coast where we were able to watch the waves roll in and crash against the lava was a stunning experience every morning!
It’s a quiet location but a short drive to many fun sites to visit. The house is well stocked and comfortable with the pool being a fun diversion for everyone with beach and pool amenities (beach chairs, towels, boards, kids toys etc) available as well…such a nice perk!
We had a great time and I’d highly recommend it!

Enjoyed our stay. Nice roomy home, comfortable beds and well stocked kitchen. Nice neighborhood for walking in either direction. Great ocean front views. Property manager, Juanita very communicative and helpful when we unknowingly put the hot tub to sleep.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 11 day stay at Mika Kai. We selected this home to celebrate our honeymoon and one year anniversary, and it worked especially well as a tropical vacation home during a pandemic. The house has nearly everything you could ever want to prepare meals, which allowed us to cook at home. We used grocery delivery services like Shipt so we didn’t have to go to Hilo and shop. The home is outside of town and further away from the touristy areas of the island, which makes it ideal for relaxing and feeling like you’re truly away from it all. You can get to town within 20 minutes if you need to though, and we found most places on The Big Island could be reached within a 2 hour drive. This makes it easy to explore the island with day trips and return to Mika Kai to soak under the stars. The backyard is basically your own private resort with pool, hot tub, and ample space for outdoor dining, star gazing, and sunbathing. Whales were visible from the house everyday and pretty close sometimes too. We loved the security of the home with the gate and alarm system, and we felt well cared for with all of Juanita’s help during our stay. The weather was great and tropical. We had very brief warm showers most days followed by mostly sunny skies and around 80-82 degrees. 2 of 11 days were actually rainy but we managed to escape to sun by driving an hour or even less. We were surprised that there is no AC in the house but the sliding doors and plentiful windows made for perfect conditions in the house all the time and the are plenty of fans available. We appreciate the opportunity to stay at Mika Kai and hope to return again in the future.

Great house. Has everything you need. Morning coffee on the covered porch is the best. Just remember November has the most rainfall. The cover porch came in handy to enjoy views and stay out of the rain. Overall whole family loved it.

We had a good time (as anticipated) - only 5 adults who were there to chill out and one recovering from surgery so we didn't expect to be doing much more than vegging and got that in abundance. Enough of the local attractions - easy walks (great beach trail turn right at the end of the driveway!) and hiking, botanical gardens, museums and just staying at "home" watching the whales, weather and tidal changes.
Our only issue was the wi-fi and cell reception left a bit to be desired at times. However - we arrived 3/10/20 as the world was facing and ramping up with COVID-19. Thought about cancelling but the penalty deterred us - we pressed on. Three left the 16th, two the 19th. Foregoing the tropical green and calming waves to return to eerily empty airports and the US/Canadian border set for closure.
Fortunately it's the memory of Juanita's warm welcome and the restful feeling of Mika Kai, the glorious view, crashing waves and morning sunlight on the lanai that we'll hold in our thoughts.
...of course there's also the AWESOME photos we took that have family and friends envious and longing for a trip to the Island.

Our group had an awesome experience! The property was immaculately clean and had everything we needed. The property manager was easy to communicate with and responded very quickly. We only had a couple minor issues (motion activated light and electric fry pan). Reported only so they could be taken care of for the next guests but instead the property manager corrected them immediately. Great service! We highly recommend this property to others.

My family and I stayed at this home and were impressed with the beautiful location - right on the ocean - we were able to see dolphins and watch the waves crash on the lava rocks. Nice pool and quiet community. Lots of bedrooms and bathrooms made it easy to spread out for everyone. Highly recommend.

Wonderful secluded quiet property was just what we wanted. We had a few tiny glitches with the hot tub but we notified contact and they had folks out to fix it the next day. Wish I was still looking out at the beautiful ocean with whales spouting right now. Would definitely stay here again!

The property was very well maintained and well equipped. The addition of the room air conditioner made the bedroom very comfortable at night. We enjoyed just sitting on the patio watching the ocean and the incredible waves that break in front of this house. With only being one couple we really enjoyed having an optional master suite on the main floor. Thank you for the welcome basket, we really enjoyed the treats and your thoughtfulness. The house is well equipped with everything you could possibly need. What a beautiful place to celebrate our 40th anniversary.
