Oswego History
Fort Oswego, later renamed Fort Ontario, was established by the British in 1722 as a trading post. During the French and Indian War, the French captured and destroyed the fort, leading to its reconstruction by the British in 1759. The fort changed hands several times during the American Revolution and the War of 1812, before being permanently ceded to the US in 1796. The current fort was built between 1839 and 1844, and served as home to US troops until 1940. During World War II, it was used as a refugee camp for Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. In 1946, the fort was transferred to the state of New York and later became a historic site, with costumed interpreters recreating life in the fort in 1868-1869. The fort's WWII use as a refugee camp is now remembered at the Safe Haven Museum.
The neighborhood is a charming blend of historic architecture and modern amenities, located just steps away from downtown's bustling streets and the waterfront's stunning vistas. The streets are lined with mature trees, providing a lush canopy in the summer months and a beautiful display of fall colors in the autumn. The homes in this area range from beautifully restored Victorian mansions to quaint, colorful row houses, each with its own unique character and charm. Residents enjoy easy access to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions, as well as parks and green spaces that offer breathtaking views of the water. Whether strolling along the shore, taking in a local festival, or simply enjoying a leisurely meal at a sidewalk cafe, this neighborhood truly has it all.
