About this cottage rental
Serenity, peace, and rejuvenation await you at this private cottage on a half-acre of upcountry rainforest. Lazy Lehua Cottage is for quiet or adventurous couples, small families, honeymooners, artists, poets, musicians, scientists, and writers. The native birds sing while you enjoy your early morning tea or coffee. Settle into a hammock chair on one of three lanais among the Hawaiian Hapu'u ferns, flowering indigenous Ohi’a Lehua trees, and scented ginger. Breathe in the cool, fresh, and pristine night air under stars and clouds without overhead street lights, before retiring to possibly the best sleep you’ve ever had.
Lazy Lehua Cottage is located only 2 miles from restaurants, galleries, winery, golf course, and Sunday Famers’ Market in Volcano Village. The Village is an enclave of artists, National Park rangers, and scientists, near the Island’s Eastside with its hiking trails, waterfalls, fresh water pools, and black sand beaches.
Explore the world-famous Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, just 3.6 miles from the cottage. In the Hawaiian language, ‘mana’ means spiritual energy and healing power. The Park is filled with Mana! You may sense it as you trail-run or hike through the forests and steaming craters, traverse the giant lava tube, or witness new land being created at the Kilauea caldera— one of the only places in the world where this occurs. Also, check out Punalu’u beach within a 45-minute drive-- the Big Island’s most famous black sand beach where endangered sea turtles swim, rest, and lay eggs. If good coffee is your obsession, take a tour at the Ka'u Coffee Mill in Pahala and see how coffee is grown, milled, and roasted. And, of course, visit old historic downtown Hilo (45-minutes away), as well as the magical Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden, with its epic coastline and rare flora.
Later you can restore your sore muscles in the master bedroom jetted tub overlooking the rainforest outside your window-- exactly what’s needed after your day of exploration on the Big Island. Like a young pup, you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready for more adventures!
Lazy Lehua Cottage was constructed in 2004 with respect for the aina (land). Trees were hand-cut and the property was cleared in a minimally invasive manner. Trees removed from the site were recycled into the cottage’s posts and railings to blend in with the rainforest. Select cottage furniture was hand crafted— the coffee table, bar top, and bedroom headboard were all made with local, exotic, and native woods. The cottage has been maintained with immaculate and loving attention and we know you will feel its special mana when you are here.
Note: We have always been recognized for our meticulous maintenance. Because your safety and comfort are our top priorities, our cleaning and sanitizing procedures comply with guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA). We remain committed to making your stay at the Lazy Lehua Cottage safe, relaxing, and enjoyable.

Beautiful, private, perfect place to see the east side of the big island . After a day of venturing out, loved returning to the peacefulness and cool breezes of the cottage . Fully stocked kitchen. Comfortable bed. Would love to stay here again in the future.

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights as part of a larger anniversary trip. This house was everything we could have asked for. You can tell the owners love this house and use it often themselves. It’s very well stocked, clean, and well taken care of. The house is in a neighborhood but the thick rainforest gives you a ton of privacy. The whole house is very comfortable and all 3 decks are lovely to hang out and have a cup of coffee or a beer. The location is so convenient to Volcanos National Park, literally 5 min away.

This was one of the most unique and wonderful VRBO accommodations that we have stayed in. We have stayed in this area twice before. This was a very quiet location in the forest area very near Volcano. (The tree frogs do sing at night, but we enjoy them). Kitchen was well stocked, the coffee beans and grinder made great coffee, and we were able to cook fresh fish and Macnut pancakes without driving to a restaurant. The bed was comfortable, and plenty of blankets were provided, as it gets cool at night.
The host also notified us that the lava had broken through during second the night. We drove back to the park (another advantage—very short drive to Hawaii Volcanoes Park) that evening, but it had stopped flowing, so there wasn’t a glow. But, since it was such a short drive, it was not a big deal. The jacuzzi tub was wonderful. They have a very large rainfall storage tank, and good hot water heater, so water was plentiful and hot when needed. Even though we are in our 70’s the stairs in the home were not difficult for us. But, a grab bar near the jacuzzi tub would have helped 😜
For those blessed enough to enjoy this property, we recommend: get groceries in Hilo before driving up, and note there is not a washer/dryer in the house. We went into Hilo to a very nice, clean laundromat near downtown, Downtown Laundry Express. Then make sure to try Kula Shave Ice on Mamo Street and pick up fresh fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market close by. You will not regret staying here!

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage and a wonderful time visiting the park in spite of the rain. The cottage was very nice and well stocked with everything you’ll need.

My two children (ages 10 and 13) and I just spent five nights at Lazy Lehua, and we all loved it! It was a perfect set up for us, and every aspect of our stay exceeded our expectations. This is a lovely property in a magical place - clean, well-maintained, and perfectly located to be an ideal jumping off point for park exploration. Stacey was friendly, responsive, and accommodating. We made many wonderful memories and we all sad to leave. We hope to return one day!

We had visited Volcanoes NP 22 years ago. We decided to make a return visit, ending in Kona. The home was just as described-charming. It was very comfortable and provided a perfect place to relax when the weather became too rainy and windy. And being just minutes from the Park made it very convenient. We could not have picked a better place to stay. Mahalo!

A nice secluded place to stay in the Hawaiian jungle. Has everything you need! I would definitely stay here again. Mahalo for use of the Lazy Lehua Cottage.

This place is the only place you need to stay in Volcano. We loved the "fireplaces", the kitchen, the upstairs bedroom was just precious. We did not use the jacuzzi tub so we cant speak to that. The rain forest was just that and it was nice to stay in for part of our trip and just listen to the rain. Could have stayed longer

Wonderful private location with everything you need for a stay in this more remote area of the Big Island. Comfortable and clean. Would book again.

We were completely charmed by this amazing bungalow. It felt like we were living in a clean, chic treehouse in the jungle!
It is beautifully appointed, and the host leaves a few items (and treats) to get us going. The kitchen is fully applianced and everything works as it should. We wish it had been warmer so we could have taken advantage of the front and back porches.
The neighborhood is quiet and private, the owner and local contact are super responsive and the location near the Volcanoes National Park is super convenient.
In short, we LOVED it!

My family and I stayed here over new years. The property was exactly as presented - it's a clean, charming cottage tucked away in rainforest, with only one other neighbor visible from the property. Every morning we heard a variety of birds and saw a couple of passing pheasants. One the other side of the highway are a few restaurants, small grocery stores and a gas station.
The cottage was very well stocked and clean. It worked well for two adults and two small children. As mentioned elsewhere it can be pretty cool but the fireplaces help, and there are thick blankets - it's not hard to get comfortable.
It was one of the highlights of our stay on the Big Island.

Everything about our stay was spot on! Well stocked, convenient location to Volcano National Park and super quite! It was one of the few places we have been on Vacation where I could have just lounged around in the rain forest.
Communication with the owner was great and easy. We hope to be back some day!!! A+ VRBO experience!!!

Loved how the amazing property nestled into its surroundings! Everything was top notch and our only request for improvements would be washer and drier. But believe me the positives WAY outweighed that slight inconvenience!!! Would stay here again ANYTIME in the volcano region!

Definitely the best place we stayed in Hawaii, and a recommendation.
See you soon again.

The cottage was just as lovely as in the pictures. It was super clean, and the upstairs and downstairs created some privacy. The space is thoughtfully laid out, and the location is excellent. It's a beautiful spot, and also very close to the national park.

The Lazy Lehua cottage was absolutely beautiful. It was very well stocked, extremely clean and a joy to spend a couple of days in. The cottage was nestled in the rainforest, surrounded by lush vegetation, which was home to a chorus of birds to sing you to sleep each night. It was probably the nicest place I have stayed in my travels over the years...a wonderful combination of rustic with beauty and comfort. We went for a walk a couple of times and found the neighbours very friendly. It was very well situated on the doorstep of Volcanoes National Park. Thank you Stacey!!

We spent 3 days in this lovely place to explore the Volcanoes, and truly had the experience of a lifetime! On the morning of the second day (June 7), our host Stacey messaged that Kīlauea had begun erupting earlier in the morning. We left immediately and were at the overview around 6 am. What a sight! Only few people were around then and we got to chat with some locals who shared their knowledge of the volcano (and where to go to see it a night --which was truly amazing). The cottage is absolutely lovely, secluded and private yet minutes from the National Park. The kitchen has all the essentials and it is so nice that there were supplies of different spices, coffee filters etc. Because of the proximity to the park, we were able to hike the Kïlauea Iki Trail early in the morning, and were largely alone on the trail, another unique experience! Would stay again here anytime.

This was our first vacation to Hawai’i so we had premonitions but weren’t exactly sure what to expect. We arrived in the dark and although the directions were correct we somehow got a bit turned around. It was just so dark and secluded that we missed the our turn. The neighborhood was nothing like we’ve ever seen. It is so dark at night that it was hard to tell if it was at the right place when we arrived.
It is so secluded and *quiet( human neighbors) that you would not even know there are people within miles. As for the non-human neighbors (birds) I was really surprised at how noisy they were in the evening and ALL night long. I was super glad that I had ear plugs. My wife didn’t but she didn’t have a problem sleeping through the sounds. The bird calls, although really loud, we’re pleasant. It was fun the hear the different sounds of the day-time birds in the morning and in the day.
As for the cottage. It was clean, well kept and maintained had everything we could have hoped for. The photos understate how nice the place is.
Every thing was as good or better than expected.
Great communication with the owner but didn’t need to contact her for anything.
We both wish we had more time here and would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Mahalo Lazy Lehua!

Thank you for a fantastic stay. Spent 3 days here and it was just delightful. The property is very lash and tropical the cottage is very clean and well-appointed. A beautiful view out of every window and proximity to hiking and restaurants was wonderful. Very easy drive in the Kona. Viewing the stars at night was pretty spectacular.

A lovely cottage in a secluded spot. All that we could have hoped for and more. Nestled in a tropical forest,Lazy Lahua offers a peaceful hide-away with easy access to Volcano National Park. What a treat to return to this enchanting cottage after a long day of hiking.

We loved our stay here. It had everything we could possibly need, including big umbrellas to keep us dry in all the rain we got while we were there. The little gas fireplaces kept us cozy when it was chilly. We loved how you can see the stars at night through the high bedroom windows.
The location is perfect for spending time at Volcanoes NP. Only a 10 minute drive to see the latest changes in Kilauea.
The hammock on the lanai was so relaxing. So many birds singing in the trees.
We'd love to come back again some day!

We loved staying at this charming cottage near Hawaii Volcano National Park-8 min drive. It is well supplied with bath items, lotion, shampoo etc…and a starter supply of snacks, spices, and a few condiments in the well stocked kitchen. We used the gas fireplaces several times to take the morning chill off. There’s just something relaxing about the sound of rain while swinging on the lanai!

What a beautiful property! The cottage had everything we wanted or needed. The communication regarding check-in and check-out and information we needed for our stay was very organized. We really enjoyed the lanais and privacy of the home, as well as the fireplaces that got used often in the cool, wet weather. The cottage was a perfect base for exploring the national park. We had a wonderful time, and it was hard to leave! We would definitely recommend and would come back in a heartbeat!

Everything turned out as good as the reviews we read. Just a few minutes drive into the national park and tons of walking trails. Make sure you get up real early or stay very late at night and check out the lava glow. As far as the house, nothing was Wanting or missing.
As far as the cottage.. Just a gorgeous building, well furnished. The sounds at night (birds, crickets, rain on the metal roof)will lull you fast to sleep. Will definitely be back!

Staying here was like staying at a good friend's fantastic cottage in a rain forest. We had everything we needed. It was secluded and very quiet. We mainly heard the birds in the day and the frogs at night. But very close to the few restaurants in Volcano Village. And close to Volcano National Park. We could go from hiking a lava filled crater to our rain forest cottage. We certainly hope to go back some day.

We adore HVNP & have vacationed in Volcano village 8 years now, staying in VRBO rentals every time. All were fine, but after discovering Lazy Lehua Cottage in 2017, we can't imagine staying anywhere else. We KNOW each week-plus visit will be as fantastic as the previous ones. The love for this home shown by the owner & the local support team is obvious. LLC is maintained meticulously, inside & out, and upgrades appear regularly. We can't wait to return in 2023. :-)

Absolutely beautiful home and property. Everything we needed was there. Easy drive to wherever we wanted to go, the volcano park, shopping, restaurants, or beach. Perfect place to relax and enjoy😊
