Small boutique hotel
Continental breakfast was very poor. Actually, it was the worst hotel breakfast we have ever had.
Bed was uncomfortable.
2.0 / 5.0
I booked the hotel because I though it would have some old world charm. While the decor met this expectation that was about all.
My room was dark and small. The continental breakfast was one of the worst I have ever seen, no effort whatsoever to make it appealing. I stayed 2 nights and my room was not made up on the second day. When I called down to ask why I was told that I needed to ask for the service - not explained when I checked in.

The staff was very friendly, and our room was very clean. It was refreshing to walk into an establishment that shows they set the tone to accomplish high standards.
We hadn't realized that the room came with no mini fridge, but we were able to make due by filling a trashcan with ice to put our medicine in. It eas no biggie at the time.

The Berkeley Hotel is a good example of old world charm. Our room was very spacious which made it comfortable with a loveseat and a couch. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Parking garage is 1 block away. Easy access to the Canal Walk and the James River. Restaurants are within walking distance.
The noise level was a bit high but it was New Year's Eve so it was not unexpected.

The location and size of room
The fact that I had a serious.leak in the roof allowing water to flood the closet and carpet on 2 occasions. I was told there was a reduction on my room rate as a result of this, but it hasn't bee n applied. Poor customer service.
4.0 / 5.0
The location is definitely a plus, car parking can be an issue but there are several parking garages nearby to park overnight. The room was pretty spacious with a nice street view.
There was no microwave, no fridge in the room. There is always someone smoking in front of the entrance which is also a bit annoying.
2.0 / 5.0
The front desk and valet staff were pleasant. Also, there was an issue with my shower which was acknowledged and addressed promptly.
Booking the room through a third party is no guarantee of the description of the hotel is factual or up to date. There was nothing at this site except a bed, TV and robe. Amenities were to include a business center, a restaurant, conference space and access to a local gym. Guest laundry services were supposed to be available. The restaurant is permanently closed and none of the other offerings appeared to be in place. I was also informed that since I was there for more than a night (I booked 4 nights), no room service would be provided. It was my birthday gift to myself and took a 4+ hour train, spent more than $1,000 for my room and thought 4 stars meant more than what was received.
