Very nice share space, the atmosphere with the others and the staff.
Nothing to put your wet staf after a hike under the rain or the beach.
No hair dryer

This is a wonderful, old hostel with loads of atmosphere. Many types and ages of people come through. The owner was nice, the quiet atmosphere was respected, and we loved the central location. They brew coffee every morning, which was nice.
As of March '23, one of the two women's showers was closed for maintenance.

The location is perfect, it’s 5 minutes from the main bus station, market, and beach and the staff were amazing.
It got cold at night because the blanket was way too small and thin, I wound up grabbing a blanket from another room at 3 am. The other girls told me that they had the same issue and had to ask for another blanket too, but I checked in a bit late so I didn’t realize I needed one until all the staff had gone. To be fair I stayed here during the winter so this probably isn’t an issue during the warmer months. Aside from that first chilly, sleepless night everything was great.

Luxury single room w/own bathroom, very convenient and cozy beds, old American style architecture, friendly stuff, big and clean kitchen

They tried to help gest with food prep. Hitchen has what one would need for cooking while away from home

Everybody was super kind and respectful of others. Plenty of space and not loud at night! Very close to the beach as well!

Homey feel. Liked the historic aspect/atmosphere. Had a view of the water, the location is downtown, and easy to walk around downtown.
First time in a hostel, traveled with two teens, good experience for them.

Hilo Bay Hostel is unsanitary and unsafe. There is a cockroach infestation that is not being addressed, there is black mould and spores growing on the ceiling fan. Nothing has been cleaned in years. Its disgusting and most likely violating health and building codes. I stayed one night (woke up with a cockroach on the bed!!) and left immediately as soon as I was able to arrange new accommodation.

Great place met new travel friends thank you ,all staff was very helpful and nice
That the men's shower still isn't complete finished , and the only hand towel in the kitchen wasn't replaced with a new clean one often enough .

good location in the Hilo downtown, comfortable beds, nice staff
when we entered the lobby I was thinking we are on a wrong place. I had a very different expectations based on the pictures from the booking site. it was very shabby and old at the first sight, lot of things everywhere and dust. the room looked quite ok and it was cleaned at the maximum possible level for sure, but the furniture was really old and so a bit sticky, the curtains looked like from 1920 and there was a mold in the wicker chairs. the common bathroom was a nightmare to use especially with small kids. the kitchen was clean at the first sight but it was a mess, we didn’t use it at the end. the single people using the common rooms looked quite happy there and the atmosphere was very friendly but as a family with small kids I would never come to this place again.

NOTHING
I state that I have traveled far and wide around the world and I have never found myself as bad as in this place.
Let's start from the beginning, as usual I book through booking.com and I receive instant confirmation of the reservation after paying for the first night of the 4 booked (the other three I would have paid upon my arrival as written on booking).
5 days before my arrival I received an email from the hotel saying that they would have canceled my reservation if I had not immediately paid the full amount and that they have never received the deposit for the first night, so I immediately call the structure and even reluctantly I go to meet him by paying everything to avoid problems even if once you have the confirmation from the booking you are not required to do anything more !!!!
In the next email they confirm my reservation and say that the door of the hostel is open from 9am to 9pm.
On the day of my arrival my flight is delayed by 2 hours and I arrive at 9:30 pm at the hostel certainly not my fault. The doors are closed and nobody opens me, I call 10/15 times and NO ONE ANSWERS ME.
In short, if anything happens they don't give a damn about you and LEAVE YOU OUT. They have absolutely no respect for the customer. The next day I explain what happened and I am told that it is my fault and that after 9 they no longer care about you. (Of course since I had already paid)
The guy from the reception (the only really nice person) tells me that he will ask the manager at least for the refund of the first night but the manager obviously refuses categorically.
Not to mention the rooms with ALL THE WINDOWS BROKEN AND THAT DO NOT CLOSE with the ensuing noises and everything that can enter, the shower and everything else dilapidated.
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE ABSOLUTELY AVOID COMING HERE.

Nice location
some shaved man walks and yells at people. I began to wash socks and a T-shirt, two things that I wear. he began to yell and remembered it all the days. The rules don't say anything about laundry. $7 laundry, I don't have to wash $7 socks.
the kitchen is locked at 10 pm and there is nowhere to put food. the situation is like in a prison, insects (ants) run around the bed

I had trouble booking. I was booking for a friend. He stayed there not me. I gave them his name which is Richard. But they placed him in a female dorm. Fortunately the manager caught and sent me a message. I called him and he straightened it out.

Friendly staff in a historic downtown building. A clean, well-located value for a stay in a European-style hostel. Would stay again.
4.7
The only nice thing about this place was the location and that it was cheap.
The beds were dirty and hidden with a sheet. The showers were rather disgusting and not cleaned. Kitchen was surprisingly clean(ish) but there was lots of moldy food left in the fridge. The staff seemed nice but yelled/screamed at me when a female friend came to store some luggage in my male dorm room in the middle of the day saying i wasnt respecting others privacy.

Nice staff. Very cool historic building.
Noisy street outside. Had to wait until staff showed up in the morning to check out and get my security deposit back.

maybe the location because it is near the center of the city. but it isn’t a nice center. it is too old.
Cleanliness was the worst. cockroachs everywhere. and no one seemed to care about it.

Even though we arrived past the check in time, our host was kind to wait for us and give us all the indications. Also, it was located near some nice restaurants and breakfast places.
It was a little bit loud at night, since it was on a busy street.

Right downtown. Close to everything in Hilo. Great bus service I’m town too.
Roaches everywhere.

Booking.com doesn’t clearly state that if you’re going to request date changes that there could be a cost if it’s under 24 hours. I feel like if your company is offering it it should clearly state that there is a charge. I was charged over $200 and never wound up staying there because my dates kept changing due to something that I couldn’t control. Very disappointed in both booking.com and the hostel for not accommodating new change of date requests. It also said that I could cancel for partial refund which was also not true
I will never use your company again!! Fucking scam artists

we were a group of 6 people staying here, one of our rooms were molded, smelled really bad and was generally in really poor shape. we addressed this with employees at the hostel, they CONFIRMED the mold but did nothing. That is a huge health concern and no guests should ever stay in that room.
we were also told we had to pay for 2 rooms even though we could have all stayed in one. there was enough beds in our room for everyone, but I guess they wanted us to spend more money.
I was told by the guy working there when we checked out to contact his boss with any concerns so I did. He read my messages, but didn’t even bother to respond. very unprofessional.
