Beautiful setting. Very friendly staff
Loved the little shepherds hut

The rooms were wonderful as were the views. The staff were great, attentive and very welcoming. The spa is very small but well run and well appointed.
The breakfast was limited in terms of the buffet. I would have expected to be able to choose from the buffet and order a hot option as well but this was not the case. The meal we had in the restaurant did not meet our expectations and was disappointing. Whilst it is a lovely hotel it was not, because of these aspects, good value for money considering the level of cost.

The location is lovely and takes this style of stay to another level.
I only was given three bits of kindling and two firefighters meaning I couldnt start a fire.

Great rooms. Lovely location
Not really a place for vacation, with people in robes dining with us and their wait staff seemed overwhelmed and forgetfull.

It was a beautiful place- the rooms were perfectly designed for cozy comfort and I could have moved in. The dining experiences were great too- the food was wonderful and the service was perfect.
No downside. It was perfect.

the room was amazing - huge! comfortable. fully functioning kitchen, beautiful bath, fireplace, everything new and clean. very quiet, couldn’t hear any other guests. the staff were soooo pleasant and lovely to talk to and the most dog friendly people I’d ever met. i travelled alone and felt like I had nice company talking to staff every so often. all the food I ate was delicious and there’s a cute snack bar at reception
the sign for the entrance is illegible - needs to be larger. there’s not a whole lot to do around the property, some walks but nothing of great beauty and the spa looked quite uninviting, the hot tub in the walk way to the restaurant

Property is well placed for walks in open country which was important for our energetic Labrador who was able to exercise freely on a choice of paths within a few yards of the accommodation. The quality of finish in the rooms is very high with some lovely design and architectural touches both in our accommodation and also in the main barn where we had breakfast. The wooden finished floor in our accommodation ( The Den) was lovely but unfortunately not compatible with our dog who refused to walk on it . This made things difficult and worth bearing in mind if you are thinking taking a dog like ours who struggles to walk on this type of surface . Continental breakfast was very enjoyable and staff friendly.
Just a little overpriced in our opinion.

The location is ideal for walking many miles in any number of directions. The staff are friendly, engaging and always willing to help. The accommodation is well laid out. warm and comfortable. The Great Barn is an exceptional facility, providing a restful space, great food and an enjoyable social environment.
In a two berth accommodation it would be nice to have more than two of everything in the crockery sets. Two cups and two plates just doesn't work for most people.

The staff make this place, made to feel welcome by all, special mention to the young man serving in the evening and Abbie in the Spa. Everyone made a fuss of our Labrador and as a reluctant traveller, she loved every minute of her stay. Beautiful surroundings and countryside walks too. And finally, when you are staying in a pet friendly room, we've stayed in places where thats been quite obvious, certainly not here, was spotless and clean and smelt lovely on arrival.
Nothing not to like!!

Staff was super friendly and accommodating - so lovely the whole stay! The location was idyllic and an escape to the country. The accommodation was incredibly clean, as well as everywhere else in the barn and bar etc. Would highly recommend Retreat East to everyone I know!
We took a while to find the reception - it might be be good to put a sign up for reception. Unless I completely missed it, which is definitely possible!

Included in the overnight price was Continental Breakfast only - there was an option to purchase additional items, the choice was very limited for the continental breakfast and did not include choice of coffees/tea etc., but only a cafetiere of coffee - we requested hot chocolate for our daughter and this was additional as was swapping orange juice for apple juice!!
Our small barn - The Stables - was adequately comfortable. There was a wood burner which is a lovely touch however a very limited amount of logs are available but you can purchase more!
Location of The Stables is immediately opposite The Great Barn which we found to be very noisy with deliveries early in the morning.
The Great Barn restaurant was only open Fri-Sun when we visited and as we were there Sun-Tue we could only dine there on the Sunday - which is a shame as the food was fantastic! Retreat East is very remote so to find local pub etc., is tricky with considering drinking and driving.
