Summary
Wonderful clean 1BR house in a small old-hawaii-style duplex in Wailuku Town. This home has been lovingly well maintained to retain its historic character, while having been remodeled where it counts (like the kitchen!). Private off-street parking. Central Maui location in the heart of Wailuku Town where you can walk to an eclectic variety of shops.
Details
This cute plantation-era Wailuku Town house is absolutely perfect for adventurous visitors who are looking to escape the touristy trappings of South and West Maui. This is a safe, inexpensive and central home-base to adventure all over our wonderful island.
Although the unit is new to the market, the owners have been running two exceptional vacation rentals in West Maui for a few years now, and have received top ratings from their guests – this new unit promises the same!
This 1BR house has a queen bed and a/c in the bedroom, and a sofabed for extra guests in the living room. The living, dining and kitchen areas are an open and airy light-filled floorplan. Optimally located jalousie windows allow the sweet tropical tradewinds to blow though the home so you probably wont ever want to turn that a/c on anyway!
The owners are wonderful and also own and operate a business immediately adjacent to this house. While they are quite nonintrusive and respect their guests privacy, they are also very responsive and available should you need them.
Location
Located in the heart of old Wailuku Town, just ten minutes from the airport. This location is perfect for folks who plan on exploring all around Maui (something I suggest no matter where you stay!) It’s also worlds away in attitude and experience from the touristy hotels and resorts.
Wailuku is the capital town of Maui; completely non-touristy and down to earth. Compared to mainland cities, Wailuku is a sleepy laid-back small town, a throwback to much simpler times. In recent years Wailuku has seen a resurgence, with an eclectic array of hip shops and restaurants opening up alongside old-time Maui standards. You can walk all of Wailuku Town from this very central location.
Examples of what you might find strolling around the neighborhood: hip coffee shops, local clothing boutiques, hair salons, all different manner of inexpensive restaurants that aren’t on the tourists radar, antique stores, island-style pawn shops (with items like surfboards and Hawaiian antiques and jewelry you wont find in the resorts), a funky record store, yoga studios, the Maui Academy of Performing Arts, a smoke shop, historic Iao theater, a sushi bar, art galleries, a crystal shop, an authentic tiny New York style pizza joint – and so much more! Bonus: the first Friday of every month there is a block party where folks come from all over Maui to hang out, listen to live music, eat and browse the local vendors wares.
Moving outside the town, you’re also situated just a couple minutes before where the amazingly picturesque West Maui Mountains split to open into historic and sacred Iao Valley.
Iao Valley is just a few scenic minutes by car and has hiking trails (Kepaniwai Park just between here and Iao Valley is a great spot for a picnic.) The North Shore of West Maui starts close to here as well, with scenic vistas and less crowded hikes like the Waihe’e Ridge Trail. If you’re interested in learning more about Maui and Hawaiian history and culture, the Bailey House Museum is also close by and holds a large collection of photographs and Hawaiian artifacts that range from traditional stone tools to Duke Kahanamoku’s surfboard. (Bailey House is also a great place to score some unique gifts that are actually made in Maui.)
15 minutes in another direction takes you to the Maui Ocean Center and the Maalaea harbor for snorkel boats and whale watches. You’re also five miles from Maui Tropical Plantation and and you’re just 15-20 minutes from the resort areas of Kihei & Wailea. Half an hour will get you to West Maui’s Lahaina Town. You’re also closer to a Road to Hana adventure, and also to Haleakala than the resort areas are.
For wind and kite surfing, and downwind enthusiasts, Kanaha, Kite Beach and Kahului Harbor are just minutes away.
An incredible value for your travel dollar when you consider what resort lodging costs – and the unique value added experience and authenticity that comes alongside is invaluable.

This was the perfect fit for me and my son! I got the bedroom and he got the pull out couch. It was a wonderful experience and the added bonus of keyless entry was one less thing I had to keep track of!

Centrally located and spacious house with easy walking distance to cool shops and coffee spots. Fully stocked and large kitchen, easy parking and quick access to main roads. Highly recommend for a more "urban" Maui experience!

This place is huge for a one bedroom and within the price range we were looking for! The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed since we cooked in the whole time. Lots of storage as well! It was nice to have outdoor seating as well. We really appreciated the washer and dryer (steps away) and beach chairs. Thank you!

Second time I have stayed at this cottage. It is lovely. Right in the middle of old Wailuku. Close to everything that I needed. Hopefully, I will stay again.

Good size, good kitchen area and supplies. Owner easy to work with. Located close to the airport, costy and great food trucks.

Close to airport, a 10-15 min drive, about $20's for a taxi. The street is busy, but once inside I really didn't notice it. It was very spacious, and clean.

This was a work trip, I didn't need much. The kitchen all worked.

Lovely vacation premise—provides for traveling needs.
We liked staying in a smaller community as we do have a budget—we also want to integrate with the community culture which provided Main Street, coffee shops, bakery and town square access within walking distance.

Renter beware
The pictures presented in this listing are a bit deceiving. It appears to be a roomy, lightfilled property that has a lovely garden view however, when we walked in, we were sorely disappointed in the outdated feel of the place. The baseboards and fans are caked in a layer of dust that lead me to believe that they have never been cleaned.
The bed and couch are terribly uncomfortable and hard. Not just firm, but worn down to the point that I can feel each crack in the bed and each divider on the couch. We normally don't have back pain but we woke up with much more soreness than we went to bed with. Particularly in shoulders, hips, and tailbone as those are our load bearing points during sleep. The couch/couch cushions also emit a musty, funky smell.
The kitchen area is fine, just be aware that there are a bunch of tiny ants across the counter top - I know this is Hawaii so critters are to be expected so just make sure the counters are clean to prevent any unwanted visitors.
The neighborhood is a bit run down but it is in an accessible location to see both sides of the island if that's the intended goal
The laundry is outside on the patio of a different unit with strange hours for use however there is a sign that says if you need the laundry at different times during the week it can be arranged.
The neighbors are noisy and there are dogs barking and roosters crowing at all hours of the day and night - the saving grace is that the AC unit provides some relief and ambient noise to drown out the roosters at 3am.
Overall, this listing was fine and served its purpose of a place to stay however we are not likely to return as the comfort level was far below expectation.

Spacious and accomodating
The place was pleasantly spacious and had all the amenities needed. It was a short walk to local businesses and about a 20 min walk to the water. Easy to catch an Uber. Only downside not to the fault of the owner is the rooster that wakes you up early in the morning and the noisy neighbors.

Very convenient location!
Great location for us, near family living in Wailuku - very convenient. Enjoyed the outdoor beach chairs and gear.

Convenient location, lovely home
This is perfect for a couple or single person. My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights. The place is clean, comfy, and beautifully remodeled on the inside. It is close to many different areas of Maui and the price is great!

Very Nice
The cottage was very clean, comfortable and with lots of room. Colleen was very pleasant and was helpful in recommending restaurants nearby. We enjoyed our stay very much, but there are a couple of drawbacks. The VRBO description of the apartment lists washer and dryer. However, the washer and dryer are not in the cottage, they are located on the back porch of the next door business that the owners have and are only available during certain hours. We did our laundry in the evening and had to use a flashlight to get back and forth. And as other reviewers have noted the roosters in the neighborhood are early risers.

Old world charm and super clean!
This property is centrally located on Maui. We were really happy with this spotless, cute plantation style cottage.

fair
The property was clean. The noise level was too high due to the location being on a busy street. Roosters crowing everywhere at very early times of the day. Difficult to sleep. No amenities in shower (soap, shampoo etc.)

Spacious, well-equipped central Maui house
We were quite happy with our 3-night stay at this property in Wailuku. The unit (back half of a duplex) is quite spacious for a 1-bedroom place and comes very well equipped, particularly the kitchen. While it's definitely not a touristy beach neighborhood, it is really quite well located in central Maui with easy access to HI-340 (Kahekilli Hwy) to the northwest, HI-32 to Kahului and points east, HI-30 (Honoapiilani Hwy) to the south, and Iao Valley Rd to the west. A variety of shops and restaurants are also in easy walking distance. A good find.

Wonderful Stay
Great location. Everything besides Hana is very close by. All the necessary as well as the desired amenities are close by and we didn't have the crowded feeling of a resort hotel or condo. Neighbors were great and people were very helpful. Close by many of the great restaurants and attractions. Very convenient to be able to get off the plane, pick up the rental car, hit COSTCO, Safeway and drug store before getting to the house. Very close to movie theaters for evening entertainment after dinner. farmers Market was great also. Thank you to Colleen and everyone else for making our Maui vacation a wonderful experience.

Cozy duplex "where the locals live"
Clean, newly renovated half of a duplex. Great location "where the locals live". Owners are very easy to work with and communication was easy. Cute town with a lot to see and do within walking distance.

Comfortable home
We enjoyed our two-day stay here in Wailuku. Our purpose in visiting Maui was to play Pickleball at pickleballmaui.com and this location was ideal for getting there and also for restaurants and picking up groceries and the beach. The house was spacious and everything worked well. It was clean and neat and comfortable.
