We had a great week at Gillercombe. Family Xmas of 7 adults.Lovely house. Great location. Nice touches- Xmas tree and decorations , basic household provisions to get started; toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets, hand soap, ... Rooms comfortable and clean . House very warm and cosy. Heating and lighting on when we arrived which was very welcome.
In terms of number of beds and en-suite it is true that the house can sleep 8 but he kitchen makes it hard to feed 8. It is ideal for families including children but all adults may be a push for some. Probably the idea is that people eat out a lot and we did but the kitchen is very small and tricky to make Xmas dinner for 7 people on small cooker. Dining room is great for playing boardgames.
Basement is a huge space and great larder, freezer good but additional fridge was old and much needed and not working. Didn’t trouble the manager as the basement was cold enough to keep food fresh enough but in warmer weather would have been a big issue. All en suites and cloakroom s very useful and nice condition. The top en suite lavatory flush was a bit fragile and had to retrieve the flush button from the cistern - at least one of us learnt a new skill.
Outside space looked like it would be nice in better weather.
Membership of Spa was a good lure and a nice bit of luxury. Just be aware is for off peak times only - 8am to 3pm - so curb any fantasy about cocktails by the pool. Also is termed as ‘courtesy’ - ie not part of the deal so may not always be available. If it important to you - check ahead.
Great location for excellent walks and exploration of Windermere and Lakes. Lots of local bars and restaurants and at this time of year enough hustle and bustle to feel nicely busy but not hectic.
The lakes are an expensive holiday location and for the price this was a reasonable to good deal . If indeed you get 8 adults there it is a good price per head - 6 would be more comfortable and that makes it a little pricier. Overall 8 /10
NB Star rating is tricky - we did not contact the property manager so just gave a middling response . The website and booking process and check in details were all very easy .
