Villa Escondida
Hidden Villa
Above the resort town of Uvita, immersed in nature, tranquility and privacy sits a hidden jewel. This unusual Villa is here for any couple or individual who wishes to rejuvenate while enjoying the area’s almost unlimited pleasure and adventure. Tucked away in a tropical paradise, this Moroccan/Indian style Villa has the feel of a small palace. This exclusive Villa is luxurious, extremely comfortable and designed with exquisite attention to detail. Designed by us (the owners Paula and Marty) our focus was to create a place of beauty that would feel palatial and yet be cradled in the mountains and jungle, where one could experience 'living in art and natural beauty at the same time'.
The Villa is all handcrafted and great care went into creating interior windows and veranda arches, all uniquely designed with beautiful moldings. The mahogany Queen bed was also custom designed and hand carved. The bedroom floors are beautiful Teak wood, soft underfoot. The 18ft vaulted ceiling is crowned by an unusual dome which can be softly lit and is a pleasure to gaze at while lying in bed. The bathroom is spacious and mostly stone and has an exotic ancient feel. While the bedroom and bathroom are comfortably screened in the veranda (living room and gourmet kitchen) are open air yet covered and protected from rain. The Villa has several multicolored stained glass Moroccan lamps and candles enhancing the already serene and romantic ambiance. The veranda flooring is imported porcelain tile, the kitchen has hand painted wall tiles and counters of of Costa Rican quartz stone. Both overlook your 51ft saltwater pool which is covered with see through fabric so that you are always protected from harsh sun's rays but can see sky and trees clearly. The pool is tiled with Italian imported glass tiles and is both beautiful to look at and delightful to enjoy. It can be lit for an evening swim under the stars. The water is non chemical (saltwater) and one does not feel the salt. It feels clean, fresh and gentle. It is for your exclusive use except for 1 1/2 hr daily when the owners use the pool,,,,always at a prearranged time so you are never disturbed
As you enter this private reserve you are stepping into a world of natural beauty where your awareness shifts as your senses are delighted and calmed by the extraordinary beauty in which you will be living.
This 60 acre private property has abundant wild life and hundreds of flowering plants and fruit and palm trees and overlooks the largest marine preserve in Central America, Cano Island, and The Whale's Tail reef (the third largest in the world). Included are hiking trails leading to stunning Pacific Ocean views and resting areas where you can stop to enjoy a glass of wine as you watch the sun set.
The villa is nestled in the midst of a garden of tropical flowers, bamboos and sculptures and overlooks your personal 51 foot saltwater pool, the Uvita River Valley, and the Talamanca Mountains beyond. You awake each morning to the sounds of Howler Monkeys and numerous of types of tropical birds, (yet comfortably screened in), and relax in the evenings to the surf's far off gentle rhythms.

Romantic tropical adventure
Paula and Marty's villa is a slice of tropical heaven! They have created a peaceful retreat on top of this mountain, where you feel like you are the only one there, except for all the wildlife. They have done an incredible job in creating a relaxing, peaceful zen-like atmosphere and incorporating beautiful statues, art, and flowers into the tropical landscape. We spent 9 days in this paradise and loved staying in for the night, where we cooked in the well-equipped kitchen, and then just listen to the sound of the jungle in the outdoor living room, and cool off in the beautiful pool just a few steps away and watch the stars.
There is a beautiful walk to the top of the mountain, where you can see the whole coastline and the Uvita whale tale. On the way up we were surrounded by butterflies, and the sounds of howler monkies (we never saw them but heard them every day) and saw countless birds including scarlet macaws, toucans, hummingbirds, hawks, you name it! There is also an easy walk to a waterfall just up the road. We truly enjoyed the adventure of the drive up the mountain in our 4x4 and saw something new every time.
There are plenty of things to do in the area, and we visited a new beach almost every day, there are so many of them. Our favorite was Playa Piñuelas, where we would be the only ones on the beach, and also the little beach right behind Villa Leonore just south of Uvita.
Paula and Marty were gracious hosts, easy to communicate with, and we enjoyed interacting with them. The bed was really comfortable with nice sheets, the bathroom, which is a piece of art in itself, was stocked with nice fluffy towels and a spa kit with fancy soaps.
We have visited many places around the earth, and this is one we will come back to!

Tropical Paradise!
My girlfriend and I stayed here for five nights while exploring the beautiful natural world of Uvita and Osa Penninsula. The Pictures don't do this place justice! Marty and Paula paid incredible attention to detail when building the quite and cozy retreat. Beautiful sculptures and statues surround the property and are built into the design in some cases, like the buddah next to the shower in the bathroom. Also the lighting is really great here, most lights are on dimmers allowing you to really create the perfect mood, and there are plenty of candles outdoors as well. On a clear night the stars are just breathtaking. There is a short (15 - 20 min) hike to the top of the mountain here where you have incredible and absolutely private panoramic views of the sun setting over the ocean. Marty and Paula have even provided a table and bench at the lookout point in case you would like to pack a picnic or a bottle of wine for the top. We also really loved driving up the dirt road to and from the house. It is unlike anywhere we drive at home and really added to the experience and adventure.
We hope to stay here again on our next visit!
Enjoy your time in paradise!!

Beautiful but difficult to get to
The Villa is really beautiful. We loved all the design elements and little details that Paula and Marty so lovingly selected. And the pool is absolutely awesome. We spent quite a bit of time around the pool, in large part because we found it so difficult to get up and down the mountain. We had a 4WD but the road was a mess. That also meant that we cooked in almost every night, which was fine (we got some fantastic tuna at the farmer's market on Saturday), although it would have been a bit easier with a sharp knife. Paula and Marty were very helpful, but we would have preferred if they didn't straighten up our stuff every time they came up for a swim. They were very considerate about when they came, but it felt sort of like we were being watched over by mom and dad.

Heaven in the Jungle
Where do I begin!! From the moment we arrived in the country (even months before when all the planning took place!), Paula and Marty were there for us every step of the way. It was our first time visiting another country, and for our wedding no less! We got married at Nauyaca Waterfalls, which are only about 30 min away (It was a DREAM!!).
As we drove up the road to our temporary home we were blown away by the surrounding jungle. The drive was a lot of fun! Safe, but make sure you have a 4x4 with decent ground clearance. We fell in love with the Villa right away, from the many birds that visit you every day, to the geckos chirping away merrily every evening (my fav part!!). I have never felt more at peace, and at home. We loved the mix of outdoors and indoors, and even indoors felt like we were part of the jungle. The property is so beautiful, there is so much to explore, I only wish we had longer to do so! We were blessed to experience a family of howler monkeys playing in the trees on one of our hikes- A tip: Really take your time to look at everything in silence and the jungle will come alive! There are many waterfalls to discover, Uvita is truly magical.
Make sure to check out Playa Ventanas, it is on private property (has security watching the parking area) and just outside of the town, is absolutely gorgeous and not to be missed. Also make sure to visit the bus depot cafe, Marty was kind enough to aware of this cheap and delicious place! I'm sure I amused the very friendly and helpful workers there as we returned many times. They were very patient as we stumbled with our Spanish. (The fried chicken and rice are amazing!)
Paula and Marty are very special people, they genuinely care about their home and their guests. They were always there when needed, we felt safe and well looked after. Leaving was the hardest thing I've had to do! A piece of my heart was left behind, I can only hope we return one day.
Thank you Paula and Marty, from the bottom our hearts, for making this the trip of a lifetime that we will never forget! You made the most special moment of our lives all the more special...

A Costa Rica Gem...
We've been grateful to visit many places around the globe, but it's still a thrilling surprise to find a place crafted and decorated with such care and inspiration. The owners are gracious and exceptionally accommodating, the setting is gorgeous, and the villa is nothing less than extraordinary. Yes, a 4X4 is a MUST; but that simply goes with the territory (side road in Costa Rica hills). Easy access to three entirely charming towns. Uvita has a great farmers market, not one but two supermarkets, a great coffee shop/restaurant, and others besides. Ojochal is home to some extraordinary restaurants. And Dominical has some brilliant places to eat and shop at and see. Gorgeous wildlife and countryside all around. We stayed at this Villa hoping to have a wonderful and rejuvenating holiday. It was indeed that; a truly exceptional place and setting.

Rainforest seclusion
This zen little getaway is perfectly secluded high in the mountainous rainforest. It was so relaxing and romantic to feel like the only two people in the world. The constant buzz of cicadas and cries of birds of prey played the perfect soundtrack for ambient white noise. I can't imagine a better backdrop to recharge one's body, mind and soul than the dramatic sunsets with a 360 view from the mountains to the Pacific. It was so obvious that Paula and Marty care deeply about their guests and their chosen home, down to each exquisite detail and the gracious hospitality we were shown.

A Piece of Heaven!
My partner and I truly loved this place. The serenity and beauty of this hidden paradise was far beyond our expectations. We loved the ruggedness of area with the luxury of the exquisite villa. So dreamy! We spent 10 glorious days waking to the sounds and sights of the mountains, exploring the trails, rivers, waterfalls and the spectacular views from the mountain tops. They were not kidding when they said you needed a 4X4!! Not for the faint of heart :)but totally worth it! The salt water pool was so refreshing and truly a welcomed treat after many vigorous hikes of the area. Exploring the south pacific of Costa Rica was truly an unforgettable experience, so many steep hills! Marty and Paula are such loving, genuine people, a real pleasure to know, attentive to all our needs and then some, nothing could have been better!!

Truly a paradise!
Hidden Villa Escondida is truly a secluded piece of paradise, ideal for a couple seeking to enjoy a private, romantic and rejuvenating vacation. The villa itself is just exquisitely detailed and appointed. The private salt water lap pool is so refreshing. And the hiking up to view beautiful south Pacific sunsets is wonderful! We enjoyed hunkering down and not leaving the premises for days at a time. The road to the property is a little challenging, but not that unusual for Costa Rica and not bad if you have 4 wheel drive. It is best to have a Jeep type of vehicle with off road tires. But...any difficulty in getting there is well worth it. You will not be disappointed of you are looking for a one-of-a-kind secluded vacation on the beautiful south Pacific coast of Costa Rica. and by the way, Paula and Marty are the best! They make sure you have everything you need including as much privacy as you want! Just fantastic!

Honeymoon of Our Dreams
My wife and I took off on our delayed honeymoon this past January and headed to Costa Rica. Our expectations were far surpassed by this beautiful Villa in the mountains. We wanted a honeymoon that was relaxing, but allowed for adventure. We're in our twenties and aren't much for visiting other countries just to stay in an all inclusive resort. Paula and Marty's Villa is one of a kind. Our mornings were spent reading, making smoothies, drinking coffee, and going for a swim in the pool. Afternoons were spent with trips to local beaches, lunches at the Goathouse 169 (which was delicious), and cooking dinner at the Villa. The outdoor kitchen is great and made cooking a fun event. The Villa itself is just incredible. The detail work in the bedroom and bathroom is exquisite, setting a relaxing mood upon entering. The drive up the mountain is an adventure, but once you're there, you don't want leave. The whole trip feels like a dream. It was perfect. Thanks so much Paul and Marty!

jungle retreat
We stayed for five weeks in Jan. and Feb. 2014. Paula and Marty were absolutely wonderful. They responded quickly to any problems and were a delight to know. They readily provided guidance to local attractions. The home was splendid and the pool was wonderful. I fell in love with the salt-water pool without the harsh chemicals. Everyday was filled with flowers, hummingbirds and toucans and for the star-gazers, the Southern Cross was visible each morning. Some of the local restaurants were incredible, such as Ballena Bistro, Villa Lenora. I highly recommend the Sierpe River tour. Spectacular wildlife and plenty of it. It was wonderful.

Paradise
This is a romantic dream place in the jungle, where every detail in the architecture, every frond and flower seems to be perfectly planned at the highest aesthetic standards, but completely natural at the same time. And of course, where else in the world will you get a 51 foot pool basically for yourself (any use by the owners very limited and non-intrusive). This is one of those places you don't want to give away, because you don't want too many people to crowd the schedule. But Paula and Marty deserve a rave review. For those who like to be off the tourist track and enjoy nature in both privacy and comfort, it just doesn't get better than this.

Truly Amazing
I don't even know where to start on this review.. This place is certainly one of the most amazing places I think I will ever stay in my life. We started looking for places months before going to Costa Rica, Paula was so helpful. She called me and gave me her phone number and told me to never hesitate if I would like to talk again or needed help with planning
Once we got to Uvita, we followed Marty up the driveway to the house. The road was rough to say the least, you need four wheel drive for sure. Once we made it up the driveway, it was all worth it. When we saw the house, our breath was taken away. I truly did not know such a beautiful place could exist. This house is a true work of art. Paula and Marty were so welcoming, and helpful. The bed is amazing, it was so comfortable, and huge. There is a dome that you can light up and look up at from bed, and it is so relaxing. The bathroom is awesome, the shower is great. The kitchen and sitting area are wonderful. We spent hours sitting here relaxing, and enjoying the sunsets. You are surrounded by rainforest here, and you wake to the sound of howler monkeys, and occasionally a parrot vs. toucan war. We were worried about bugs in the kitchen, with it being outside, but it really was no issue.
Then there is the pool. It is huge, and it has blue rafts that you can just float all over in and even catch a little nap. The pool is surrounded by bamboo and tropical flowers. It is so relaxing, it will drown all your worries away. There is also a waterfall down the road, which we loved going to. It has a awesome swimming hole which we took advantage of. You also can climb up their driveway, and you are at the top of the mountain. From here you can see the whale tale and a wonderful view of the ocean.
Not only is this house amazing, but so are Marty and Paula. They are perfect people to rent from. They gave us our privacy, but were always there to help. We got a flat tire, and Marty even took it town and got it fixed for us. They are absolutely wonderful!
When we got to the house, we had many plans that would take up our whole week. When we got there, most of those plans disappeared. We loved the house so much, we preferred to stay there the majority of the time. We went during the beginning of the rainy season, and even in downpours, this was like paradise. There is no way to describe this place, all I know is that I am recommending this place to everyone I know, and once you go you will understand why!!!

Indescribable.... but I'll try...
My husband and I have just returned from our best vacation ever. Truly, the best.
Villa Escondida is secluded back in the rainforest, near a little town perched at the edge of a marine reserve (Marina Ballena). Here is where the sounds of Howler monkeys and toucans, the glimpse of multi-colored birds and butterflies, the aroma of rampant blossoms, and a riot of green meet the simple elegance of this handcrafted villa, with its flowing pebbled shower, lofty lit dome, and mossed stone statues. Vying for our attention were the walks down the secluded dirt road to roaring waterfalls, sumptuous outdoor lounging areas beckoning us for a nap or good read; a stroll up the private trail to view the top of the world, and the shade of a cool, glimmering blue pool.
Every detail has been perfected with care here—the luxurious towels, the Moroccan coffee cups, the flow of the stones embedded in the walls of outdoor living spaces. The hosts, Marty and Paula, have invested years of work and love to create a place of peace and paradise for those of us fortunate enough to rent their villa. Marty and Paula were attentive to any of our needs (including ones we didn’t even know we had!) – including helping us to navigate a car rental problem, attention to special details such as the lovely smelling soaps, and clearing the private pathways through the rainforest hills. The hosts are a delight to know and chat with, while also providing a very respectful degree of privacy for their guests.
This is where to come to help put the world back into perspective and find all that is right and balanced in it.

Love the Villa
My husband and I had a fabulous stay at the villa. It was our first experience with VRBO and Paula made it easy and enjoyable. The villa is better than the pictures. Everything we needed was provided -- including towels for the beach. We only stayed 3 days and that was not long enough...I'm jealous of those that stayed for a week or longer.

Wonderful stay in paradise setting
We spent ten wonderful ten days at the Hidden Villa high up in the mountains with beautiful flowers all around. It was very peaceful. We enjoyed swimming in their stunning pool surrounded by lovely tropical vegetation. Every evening we would climb to the top of the mountain to our own personal jungle location to watch the sunset over the Pacific, the toucans in the trees and listen to the howler monkeys. We had great views of the whale's tail from there. Marty and Paula are gracious hosts and always asked if we required anything. We would highly recommend this villa to anyone. There are waterfalls nearby that are worth exploring and we recommend the cusinga restaurant and lodge for a great lunch and hike along their private beach. The pictures on the website are exactly what you get.

Romantic Getaway
We spent 9 wonderful, relaxing nights at Villa Escondia in February. This was the first time we used VRBO so I was happy that Paula made the booking process so easy. She answered all of my many questions promptly and with patience. Villa Escondia is tucked away in the beautiful Uvita jungle. One of our favorite things about staying here was to sit in our Moroccan style outdoor living room and enjoy the music of the jungle, howler monkeys, cicadas and many birds each afternoon, everything was so peaceful and beautiful. Inside the villa has a beautiful bedroom with a comfortable bed and unique bathroom. The villa itself is gorgeous much nicer than a 5 star hotel. Paula and Marty are wonderful people they are friendly and hospitable and made us feel right at home. We would definitely recommend this to any couple looking for a quiet romantic getaway. Thank you Paula and Marty we will be back!

A Honeymoon Dream
We were in the Uvita area of Costa Rica in December of 2011 for our (belated) honeymoon, escaping from the cold of Minnesota. Paula was exteremely responsive during the booking process, and made it a breeze.
Paula and Marty are absolutely gracious, salt of the earth people. Yes we were renting their villa for a few days, but they made us feel like family and we truly appreciated that. They were as hands-on or discreet as we wished. My wife and I really felt like we became years-long friends after just a few days from meeting them.
The villa itself is really stunning. In our experience, pretty much everything in Costa Rica looks even better than the pictures, and Paula & Marty's villa is no exception. It was PERFECT for our honeymoon, and both the bedroom/bathroom ooze a sort of luxurious morrocan romance. We loved getting up in the morning and making some fresh french-press coffee; sitting out on the verandah in our lounge chairs watching the sun spill over the mountains. The pool is fantastic (saltwater; no harsh chemicals) for a wake-up dip or to cool off in the afternoon...there is a little outdoor shower which was great to rinse off. The outdoor living room is also really fun...an iPod dock (which played our salsa music non-stop:)), kitchen, couches, and the most comfortable reading chair I think i've ever encountered. The amount of detail that was put into the villa is really apparent (we can't stop talking about the antique front doors).
We wouldn't hesitate for a heartbeat to recommend this to other couples/honeymooners, and would love to visit again someday.
Uvita is a great little town with all the basics...we LOVED the little farmers market (not sure exactly what days it runs). The Uvita Information Center run by Sonia was really helpful in booking a few of our tours...Hacienda Baru, Rancho La Merced, Bodhi Surf School. South in Ojochal are some great restaurants...we ate at Citrus and loved it, but also heard Exotica is delicious. North in Domincal they have some great little shops and restaurants...the Jolly Roger has amazing burgers and wings.
Thanks again to Paula & Marty, and don't hesitate to consider this property!

A Little Slice of Heaven... Romance Meets Nature...Costa Rican Delight...
My husband and I spent ten lovely days at Villa Escondida over Thanksgiving, relaxing and enjoying this wonderful place.
The Morroccan architecture and interior decor are exotic and beautiful, the interior domed roof and beautiful arched windows in the bedroom look out at the stars from a cozy bed at night, the spacious artistic bathroom allowed for nice hot showers in style, and I enjoyed cooking meals with fresh ingrediants. You feel like you are a million miles away, but there is a grocery store that's probably i amile and a half away.
We loved passing time in the outdoor living area overlooking the pool, playing guitar, reading books, watching the trees and bamboo sway in the wind, clouds passing over the mountains in the distance...it was so peacefull and beautiful. We swam laps everyday, competing to see who could swim more, venturing out to enjoy the surrounding area when we could tear ourselves away from the place.
Paula and Marty (a very interesting and delightful couple) are responsive to your needs as appropriate. If you want to adventure there are lots of things to do close by. Exotica is our favorite gourmet restaurant in the jungle, and Don Lulu's horseback ride to the waterfalls is better than Disneyland. This was definately our favorite place to stay in the area and we can't wait to go back.

Relaxing, Romantic Getaway
We stayed at Villa Escondida for eight nights and had an absolutely wonderful time! Paula and Marty did a fantastic job designing this romantic property. The house is incredibly private yet very convenient- you are surrounded by lush jungle, but are only a short drive from the stores and beaches in Uvita. Playa Uvita has some of the most beautiful tropical beachfront that we experienced in Costa Rica. The open air kitchen and lounge area of Villa Escondida are comfortable and provide much welcome breezes on hot afternoons; we loved sitting outside, listening to music and admiring the mountains. We cooked dinner at the house every night and the kitchen had all of the essentials for a great meal. We also enjoyed taking a dip in the saltwater pool after a long day exploring the coast. The pool and outdoor sitting areas are surrounded by beautiful flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Inside is an incredibly comfortable bed and an amazing bathroom! The bathroom has beautiful tile work surrounding a large walk-in shower. The pictures truly do not do the interior justice. The temperature was pretty high during our stay, but the house was nice and cool at night and we slept very comfortably. While allowing for as much privacy as we could ask for, Paula and Marty were excellent hosts. They provided us with a wealth of information on the area, and were available if we had questions. I would recommend this to any couple wanting a quiet, luxurious getaway!

Romantic Runaway for Staying
We spent 3 nights at this beautiful and charming villa where every single detail was taken into account to make the difference. Feels like a 7 start hotel, however it has nothing to do compare to a hotel, cause the magic you feel the moment you come out of the car and walk down the hill to enter the house last forever. The statues, the lights, the furniture, the bed, the bathroom, every single thing is unique. Paula and Marty are the greatest host you want to have. They offer such a level of hospitality that you don't leave the place cause it feels like home. Paula with her beautiful artistic ideas and Marty supporting her and with a contemporary vision have built the most romantic place inside the Uvita mountains where the rainforest meets the sea. We will definitely come back.
