About this cottage rental
No flooding in this part of Vermont!! Not near a river, thankfully, and lake is LOW. A double bed but there's a couch that folds to a twin in the living room in case somebody snores! Welcome to the sticks! I say that in the best way. The lake breeze keeps the mosquitos at bay and there aren't any black flies to torture you! A boat or two goes by on the lake. The train whistle, also, across the lake... otherwise QUIET. 5 miles to the Bridport Country Store and the Town Green, where nothing much happens. Sometimes there's a Fireman's Cookout. A photographer's paradise. Bald eagles abound and you'll hear crickets and owls and foxes, the wind. the waves, the train. This cottage is a small, funky, book filled, wildly romantic, cozy and colorful one bedroom (half opening to living room) with gas fireplace, full kitchen, (the microwave and some dishes are in the bedroom hutch!). covered deck...Fire pit right in front, with Adirondack chairs if you don't feel like going down to the beach. Lots of firewood. Little look out and stairs down to the beach. Stairs are sturdy but might be too much for people with mobility issues. OR dogs with shyness and lameness! A canoe for two and kayaks. x (bring please organic soap/shampoo products please, to protect the lake, so close!) No smoking, please. x Why do I say funky? The tub/shower is behind a Thai screen in the living room/kitchen area. The toilet is in a closet next to the kitchen! If you need LOTS of privacy, this isn't for you! People who love this place and come as a couple have no secrets when they leave. VIEW VIDEO- that sums it up... ! Narrow part of Lake Champlain, so you can canoe to New York State and some beautiful inlets. Great bass fishing, right off the shore. On a quiet 'dead end' lakefront dirt road, with only a few cottages, so just a random car goes by every so often. Great retreat to finish your novel or start one. Doggies LOVE it. (if your doggy is non shedding, like my Shih Tzu, let me know, and you will not be charged the entire dog fee which is for the additional cleaning. My cleaning people whine. It's a bit of a drive to the sticks.) Plenty of squirrels to chase and no cars. Long walks up the road and nearby trails to gorgeous views of the Adirondacks. Google Snake Mountain. You can sit and watch the lake and sunset from the porch or walk down a short winding path to the Look Out. Fires on the beach are the best,-plenty of beautiful smooth slate rocks to build your firepit. When I come back to visit there are often beautiful sculptures make of rocks. Every night there is a spectacular sunset, varied, intense, do I dare say life changing. I ask that guests bring towels and double bed sheets as there is no laundry. If you're flying in, can make arrangements. Yes, there is wireless, who can do without it? but NO TV. Huge selection of books you meant to read last year. Great birdwatching! Eagles, huge woodpeckers, hummingbirds. This area of the Northeast has the darkest night skies -- so the stargazing is spectacular! Grill on the beach at dusk, or the deck, or take the canoe out and watch the stars. Wonderful hiking trails nearby and waterfalls up in the mountains. This is a great part of Vermont... ! It's 20 minutes, a beautiful easy drive to the gorgeous college town of Middlebury, and a great starting point for various Vermont locations not to mention Revolutionary Forts across the bridge, and the infamous Star Trek museum in Ticonderoga?! You are literally 10 feet from the lake, so when a window is opened, dust appears, a spider web in the corner. It's country, so get in a country mood! If you really want to get away from it all but have the option of a nice restaurant 14 miles away, (Fire and Ice, The Black Sheep) this is your place. My cottage is down the hill, behind a fence. When I'm visiting, I'm close enough to hear you scream if you are attacked by a chipmunk, otherwise, you won't hear a peep from me. Quiet writer curmudgeon. But I love to be around in case you have a question or need some tips on where to go, what to do. Canoe, kayak, read, drink martini's or tea, grill out, take long walks or hikes, tour the many Vermont breweries, go over the bridge to the New York State Revolutionary forts or Star Trek museum. The Trail Around Middlebury is gorgeous. Most guests sit by the fire and gaze at the extraordinary world class view. Catch up on reading and sleep. It's a new comfy mattress! This kind of quiet isn't for everybody, but for those who are rattled by the ways of the world and really need a retreat, here it is! I try to keep fresh herbs in pots on your deck, so keep an eye out. ! Yes, it's a small place butOh, and there's a walk in closet to stash your extras!

We loved spending our days out on the deck reading with the view! Not to mention the kayaks. Laurel was a wonderful host, so responsive. Thanks again!!

Cute, cozy, quiet lake cabin with spectacular views!
We loved being feet away from the lake, spending our mornings watching nature and enjoying the scenery all from the cabin front porch! Kayaking in the afternoon on lake Champlain was fantastic.. does not get better than this! Cabin itself was cute, clean, wonderfully unique, and has everything you could need. The area around Bridport is beautiful & Snake Mt. was a great day hike with amazing views. Laurel is a great host and we can’t wait to book another stay in the future!

The Bookhouse is all you could want in a getaway. It’s cozy to be sure (good size for two people and a pup). But it has views to die for of Champlain and the Adirondacks. The water access is great. The place is very comfortable (with a great porch). And Bridport is a perfect base for exploring the region. Best of all, Laurel is a superb host. We had a fantastic stay and we can’t wait to get back soon!

We had the most relaxing and peaceful few days at Laurel's cottage. We spent most of our time lakeside, reading, swimming, kayaking, or floating. Definitely recommend spending as much time as possible at the cottage itself for ultimate relaxation, but also be sure to spend time in Middlebury and Vergennes - two of the cutest little towns in VT. Laurel was wonderful in every way. We can't wait to come back!

this little cabin is so sweet! Full of great books and everything you need. The owners is so kind and pulled out all the stop to make our slightly-rainy weekend as nice as possible, even coming out to help us with a water issue in the evening and so generous all around. The location is great, a short drive to anything you need but far away enough to not hear many cars.

So wonderful to escape built environments! You can spend your entire stay outdoors, on the porch or swimming, kayaking, etc. My mind slowed to a mellow pace within 30 minutes of arriving. And the owner, Laurel, is delightful. Helpful while completely unobtrusive.

We had a nice 3-day stay at this little cabin. It's very charming and the views of the lake were very special. It is tiny - and as the listing explains, this is a cabin meant for just a couple of people who don't mind being cozy. Laurel is a great host and had a lot of great resources and references for us. Thank you Laurel!

Laurel could not have been a more gracious host. She went WAY out of her way to assist me in replacing my cell phone after I accidentally dropped it in the lake 2 hours after arriving!! The location and views are everything the website says. There will be more visits to the Book House. W

Laurel has set up a beautiful little Vermont glamping getaway! We were greeted with a bottle of wine and some chocolate, as well as a gorgeous view of Lake Champlain. While the property itself is definitely off the beaten path, it’s close to everything you might need or want to do. We hiked Snake Mountain and Silver Lake, spent a day in Burlington, and were out on the water in the kayaks she offers as well. Overall a lovely experience for a couple, or an awesome little hideaway if you’re looking to mostly unplug and enjoy some quiet time!

We were looking for a quiet and peaceful spot for our vacation and to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The Book House is exactly what we wanted and is very cozy and charming in a beautiful location. Sunsets were amazing and while there were a few days with rainy evenings, we had fun in the cottage listening to music, streaming movies on our laptop (wifi works great!) and playing Scrabble. We had our dog with us and we had fun driving through country roads, hiking and exploring Middlebury and Burlington both of which are not too far away. Thank you Laurel for helping make this such a wonderful vacation!

If you're looking for a place to escape, book it to the small but mighty kitschy Book House! The cabin has everything you need, inside & out, and is a great home base location. There's parks, trails, Middlebury (don't miss this cool town) and Burlington. If you decide to drive to places, take the long way, its beautiful. Laurel was right on. Had suggestions, quick to respond prior to and during our stay. It had been raining quite a bit, and she checked in to be sure no issues came up. Sitting on the porch in a thunder storm watching the sunset was unforgettable.

We needed a couples getaway. We could not have found a more perfect place. We enjoyed the lake, playing games on the porch, watching sunset and even enjoyed the peaceful rain. Laura was so friendly and accommodating. Even made our puppy feel welcomed. Only wish this place was closer to home. Thank you so much again Laura for providing us with a much needed break from life.

We had a lovely time. The cabin was perfect. Very cozy property, great lake access. It was the perfect getaway.

The stay was lovely! The location is gorgeous, with a great view of the lake right out the front door. There are properties to either side but they're not really in-your-face and quiet so I never felt like there were other people intruding on the vacation. Enjoyed using the fire pit outside and the interior was cozy. Definitely should only come here with a close loved one as there's essentially no privacy inside with no separation from the bath to the living room/kitchen.
We ran into some issues with the propane grill, but Laurel was beyond accommodating and got us a new charcoal grill and charcoal to use instead! We made use of the kayaks one day and it was great on the lake despite some windy chop.
The location served well as a jumping point to Burlington or Shelburne for a day trip for activities outside the cabin. Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farms were great visits I'd recommend if you want to go out.
One big thing to note that's not related to the property at all - avoid Liberty Lane. Google Maps took us down this terribly-maintained dirt "road" in the last leg of the drive to the cabin. I don't know if it was just particularly bad after the winter but the ruts were so deep and wide the bottom of my sedan was scraping the dirt and rocks and i had to drive up the side to stay out of them. Easily avoided road, though, with several other roads around it, so just don't take it.
Thanks Laurel for the stay, hope the readers take a chance to get away at this property!

This was the Absolutely Perfect place to Experience Vermont and Celebrate My Wife’s 50th Trip around the Sun!
This cottage had everything that we needed for a relaxing and peaceful get away.
The inside is minimal, but Absolutely Perfect for the two of us to chill out and rest.
It was honestly the outside area that captured our hearts! Walking outside to a quaint covered area, with a table for two, to enjoy our meals while taking in a Fantastic View of Lake Champlain with New York and Adirondack Mountains on the other side.
We thoroughly enjoyed using the fire pit at night while listening to the waves, the wind and (honestly) not much else … No cars, No Sirens, No Crowds!
There is private access to the lake/beach with another fire pit right by the lake. We were lucky enough to visit during an early November warm spell so we spent most of our days (and nights) outside … Not warm enough to take advantage of the kayaks and the canoe, but we will do that next time!
Laurel is a Fantastic Host! From communication with us during the booking and planning process to checking in on us during our trip to make sure we had everything we needed. Definitely reach out to her if you have any questions about the cottage or the surrounding area.

Property was as described. Gorgeous! Laurel was very helpful and generous opening her property so that I could get my personal kayak down to the beach and telling me the best places to paddle. A wonderful experience!

The cabin was super cute inside and was in a gorgeous spot, but unfortunately it had a strong mildew sour smell when we arrived. Rather than complain, we thought we'd just leave a couple windows open to try and air it out while we went out for a couple of hours.
When we got back, the windows were closed and we had a rude email from the owner saying she came by after we left. We thought it was very weird she came by to check up on us (we're a couple in our mid 30s). She chastised us for leaving an outdoor light on and the windows open while the heat was on. She went on to tell us we were very uncool and disrespectful. We were shocked that she came by when we weren't there and came into the unit invading our privacy over a light left on and a couple screened windows open a few inches. We paid quite a lot of money to stay there for 4 nights, I don't think I deserved to be reprimanded for an open window or a light. The fact that we had such little privacy or control of the space was unnerving. And we wouldn't of had to leave a window open at all if it wasn't for the smell. Plus, there are nicer ways to approach paying guests should there be an issue or concern.
I apologized to avoid any escalation, but it made me upset and I felt very unwelcome and under surveillance. We had to decide between a bad smell or being cold for the rest of the trip as she made it very clear we could have windows open or heat, but not both and I had no doubt she would be watching.
The place was also very dusty, the tub was unusable dirty, and the whole place needs a deep clean. There was perishable food left in the fridge from previous guests. We understand the place had a bohemian kind of feel and layout, but we were still expecting it to be at a certain level of cleanliness. My guess is that the property has been getting away with a very quick once-over kind of clean between guests for a long time and now it's caught up with them and the place needs a very thorough deep clean.

Loved this little eclectic cottage at the edge of the lake in the woods. It has everything you need in a compact nicely decorated space. For the outdoor lovers, multiple windows with views and three strategic outdoor sitting areas are an absolute delight. The heating with a sweet gas fireplace makes it cozy and warm. Everything you need to prepare a meal is available including spices, pans, microwave and oven. Laurel is an absolutely awesome host who goes above and beyond to assist her guests. Can’t wait to go back!

Wonderful eclectic tiny cabin with an amazing view. This cabin has lots of personality. It's populated with what seems like a lifetime's worth of art, ornaments, and books. The space is clean and tight as described. We spent most of our time outside enjoying the amazing view. Laruel was an wonderful host. She was available if we needed her but was invisible until then. Took a hike up the mountain, grabed some fresh cheese from the farm / creamery 5 minutes away ..... but mostly just sat outside, read, enjoyed the view and decompressed. Thanks Laurel !!!.

Great bungalow stay on the lake
My wife and I had a wonderful week at this cool little bungalow. The view of the lake is great. So quiet and peaceful. The description by the owner is right on the money. It was perfect for the two of us in our 29th year of marriage. We hiked snake mountain, canoed on the lake, visited Middlebury, went to Audible Chasm, rode the local ferry, and RELAXED. 😁 The surrounding farm areas of Vermont were green and gorgeous. We couldn’t ask for more from our host and her property! Thank you. Well worth the trip and a good value too.
