About this cabin rental
AT JUST 2 MILES from Bergstrom airport and 6.2 miles from CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS (COTA), the Penny River cabin built in 2014 is located in the absolutely perfect location -- far enough fr town for relaxing peace and quiet but a short hop via paved access to 2 main highways and 3 main arteries that feed directly into north, central and south Austin, respectively. We rigrously sanitize and disinfect the property inside and out.
We are gated for extra security and feature a privacy fence on all 3 sides (the side featuring the beautiful Colorado River is open). The ideal arrangement here is for 3 adults. This puts mom and dad in a master bedroom on a beautiful new Tuft N Needle King Size bed with their own private bathroom and one additional individual (up to and including an adult) in the guest/study on a Murphy single (also brand new Serta, very comfy!).
KICK BACK...
in our Athens Mountain Pine Cabin. It is super-efficient, comfy and features decor that lean antique. Hit the deck and take in the beautiful Colorado River with all its wildlife and hundreds of songbirds. Moms, pops, kids, seniors, friends, *all welcome, even *Parties, but please advise us at the time of the booking of the number of anticipated guests you will invite and the expected duration of their stay and the duration of the party. (*Parties and guests temporarily restricted because of CV19). A huge plus at Penny River is that your cabin is basically 100% private; the owner lives on the property as well, but in a fenced-off, separate section. A reminder safety-wise is that the entire property is gated and fenced (except the side open to the river), adding a major degree of safety for you, your family, possessions and automobiles. Management accesses the area with the cabin for maintenance and to access their automobiles. Night lights feature motion-detection activation. Management will email, phone or knock on cabin door before entering -- should some maintenance issue require. We will only enter the cabin in your absence if some urgent or emergency issue warrants, " first knocking on -- twice -- and only then entering the premises.
Nights at Penny River can be almost magical. An impressive 115' x 30' back yard, plush with St Augustine grass, opens to a huge night sky above. Moonlight lights are especially captivating. Grill on the patio and handle a full party of guests (up to 25 total, which includes yourselves) on the deck/patio. A sliding glass kitchen window allows through-food-service to the deck for convenient serving and clean up.
We can't over-emphasize the 9 glorious miles Penny River is from downtown and the downtown noise, bustle and pollution, but if you must go into town you are mere blocks from 2 major highways to get you there using any 1 of the 3 major arteries into Austin from the east side. These connect to the north, central and south sides, accordingly (ask us). The lower section of the wine rack has lots of pamphlets on where to go, what to do and how to get there. Or maybe you're the quieter type that would prefer to stay close to the cabin and nature and just visit one of several beautiful hicking trails in the immediate area.
You might be looking for the ultimate quiet rest, in which case fill your pipe with your favorite tobacco, your glass with your favorite wine and drift away in the quiet and peace of Penny River.
INSIDE THE CABIN:
Every attempt is made to stock the cabin with essentials (paper towels, bathroom tissue, mosquito spray, charcoal starter, etc.). Should you throw a party for guests other than those booked, please give us a body county in advance and, most especially, AN AUTOMOBILE COUNT. This is to make sure we advise you in advance as to where on the street overflow parking is permitted.
If you do decide to explore downtown Austin don't miss beautiful Zilker Park, which abuts an amazing botanical garden. There are hiking trails everywhere. Ask locals what THEY like and don't be afraid to ask them what you'd like to see and explore. Austin is extremely friendly.
Finally, Penny River is secured by a gated and locked entrance and further secured by a privacy fence on all sides except the River, of course. 2 cars can easily park inside the confines. Please remember to ask before arriving in more than 2 cars; fire regulations by our insurance company require us to situate the cars in a certain way.
Once again, as we are subject to scheduled and sometimes unscheduled maintenance (lawn mowing, a plumbing problem, an electric failure resulting from a brownout or blackout) we will always attempt to give you as much advanced notice as possible before accessing the general area of your cabin. If we can't reach you, we may need to access your area unannounced. Unscheduled maintenance emergencies may not allow much advanced notice and possibly none. Thank you for understanding.

Well stocked, conveniently located home with a very comfortable bed and sofas. Nice outdoor area with grill for outdoor living - weather permitting. Quick and easy access to the highway and Austin and an extemely amenable host who let us have a late check out because our flight out was delayed.

We were in town for our daughter's graduation. The location was perfect for us as it was outside of town, but very close to the airport. The backyard view is beautiful, and the host was very helpful.

The property was exactly as pictured and described. Jim, the host, was very easy to communicate with and one could tell he is very proud of his home.
4.8
Jim is a great host, he’s super responsive and truly cares that you enjoy your stay and have a great time. If I’m ever back in Austin, I’ll look to see if Jim’s property is available first!

We had a very enjoyable stay! The host (Jim) is a super nice guy who made our stay even better. The kitchen was very well stocked, which is important to us as we cook our own meals whenever possible on our trips. It is located very close to COTA so that made it very easy to get to the track and back.

We were in Austin for a week for our daughter's wedding. We had numerous friends and family visit us at the property. There is plenty of parking, plenty of chairs, great patio and a great view of the river. The host lives behind the property which was a great asset as he was always "on call" if/when we needed him. The property is close to the airport so that was also a plus for us as we had lots of folks coming and going. I highly recommend this VRBO for folks who want a quiet place with rustic beauty.

Jim was a gracious host who stayed in communication with us as plans changed!

This property was just what I was looking for. Peaceful, homey, quaint with beautiful landscaping with view of the Colorado River. We were so close to San Antonio (1 HR) we took a day trip there. Will definitely return!

Jim was a pleasant host! He wasn't quite ready for us when we got there but was so sweet and even played us a little song he was working on on his keyboard. Live music capital of world they say! The view from the back patio was breathtaking. Loved having coffee in the morning and night capping out there with friends. I'd stay here again just for that! If you love a quirky little stay (and don't mind a neighboring rooster alarm clock) then this is your place.

Great location for COTA Race. Easy to follow instructions for checking in. Would use again.

We loved our stay here, just wasn’t near long enough. The house is great, everything we could want was there. Jim was on top of everything, making sure all was right. We would definitely stay here again if we come to Austin for a trip.

It is a very private quiet and comfortable location. Close to the airport and has a beautiful view of the Colorado River. All amenities are provided if needed and the decor is honest. The owner was very hospitable and thoughtful. 2 bathrooms, laundry and fully functioning kitchen made it easy to feel at home. Great deck with beautiful landscape and some wildlife! Definately looking forward to staying there again!

We love this place! The cabin was exactly what we needed for visiting family over the Memorial Day week. We used the grill for burgers and had everything we could possibly need in the kitchen - as well as in the rest of the home. The beds are comfortable, there is a tub for those of us who like that, the neighbors were very quiet, and our extremely kind host was the perfect combination of attentive when needed and private the rest of the time. When we come back to the Austin area we will certainly check the availability of The Penny River Cabin! Thanks again for sharing your wonderful place with us Jim!!! :)

We had a GREAT TIME!!
Jim, our host, was fantastic. We enjoyed seeing all around the house and property. The patio and back yard had a great view and were quite comfortable. The picture he painted in the house and his greenhouse were especially interesting. We would definitely do it again.
4.8
We chose this property because of its proximity to the airport and to the city. Both were fairly quick to get to but this also resulted in noise from the highway and planes.
From the moment we arrived, Jim was very welcoming and even accommodated delivery of some baby items for our daughter prior to our arrival. He provided us a tour of the place and was always available for any questions. The property offered a carport and the backyard view was beautiful. It was also gated, which offered a good sense of security.
Thanks for having our family, Jim!

This property was a perfect location for our family time, trip to Waco and proximity to Austin airport. Jim was so extremely accommodating and even drove me to the airport early in the morning. If you are looking to getaway this place is perfect.

We had the best time staying at Jim’s riverside house! He was the most attentive and accommodating host I’ve ever had the pleasure to be around, and I’ve been to A LOT of vacation rentals. Don’t hesitate in booking, it was an amazing experience!

My husband and I recently visited Austin for the first time.We had a wonderful trip. Unfortunately the accommodations were not what we expected. The place is cute, scenery is spectacular but when given a closer look, it was not clean. The toilets were very dirty all along the base of them, the showers had dirt and hair in them, and the mat in the master bath was full of mold when you lifted up.The smaller bath was clogged, which Jim had taken care of when I addressed it with him.The dish drainer was full of mold/dirt that you wouldn’t want to put clean dishes in.I went out and purchased a new one, along w 2 new mats and some cleaning products.Jim was not happy that I went out and purchased these items and asked me to remove the mats from the bathroom, which I did as requested.I also left him all of his original items under each sink.I left him the receipt and specifically stated that I did not want reimbursement, that I was merely showing him that I cared about his house and the cleanliness of it,yet he was still miffed. Apparently he does not realize we are still in a pandemic. His welcome packet says it is up to COVID standards. Those are not COVID standards. The pictures displayed on VRBO are not accurate at all.The Sun shades garden room has 2 chairs, a shelf w garden stuff, a wheelchair, a handicapped toilet, and a shower chair. When I addressed this with him his response was that I was “bothered and uncomfortable”which is not what I said.I stated that the room was not an accurate description of what the pics were.I never said anything about being bothered or uncomfortable.
The refrigerator was horrific. It had grime all over the door shelves. It also had previous guests items in it that were old. When he showed us the fridge, he stated that he left them from previous guests and to “just check them,I’m not sure of the dates”. Why would you leave previous guest food items in your fridge not knowing how long they have been there?
His license to operate the house also expired in 8/22.There was no new license hanging on the wall. I even washed all his towels and linen as any good guest would and took out all the trash. I wish we had gotten the same consideration.I asked for some compensation because the accommodations were not what they stated and that he should do the right thing. I have pictures of everything with time/date stamped.I had emailed all of this to Jim and left him the pictures upon departure. His responses were defensive to say the least.

Very comfortable and homey we loved our stay easy access to Austin locales and outlying areas ! Close to airport made it so easy to pick up my son who was flying in and out back to California! The back yard beautiful with plants and flowers great view off the deck !

Let me start off by saying that our host Mr. Jim is just an outstanding and lovely person. He met us rather late (we drove in from Lubbock) to give us a tour of the home. He was so full of energy and you can tell that he really cared about his guests. The location is a little far from central Austin, so everything is a little bit of a drive but not too much. The home is well kept and has all of the amenities you would need for an extended stay. My family loved the view from the back patio and it was just a very peaceful and serene little location. We loved having the security of the gate and felt super safe the entire time. If you have a small family or just looking for a peaceful getaway, this is a great stay! Highly recommended!

Beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the deck overlooking the Colorado River were the highlight of our stay in this comfortable cabin in the Del Valle area of Austin. It was nice to return to Penny River each evening after spending the day exploring Austin. Jim was an attentive host, meeting us upon arrival and even bringing my husband birthday cake. This home looks lovely from outside, despite being in a sketchy neighborhood. Location relative to Austin is excellent. The back deck view is glorious. It appears house interior has been painted a darker color from photos on website. The cleaning crew was not attentive to detail, in this abode that is definitely Jim's home base, and a lot of Jim's personal items were within eyesight. Decor is dated. As well, he does stay on property about 10 steps from the doors. We introverts are unused to this. Small things could help...clothes hooks in bathrooms, clothes hangers (not wire), light fixtures that provide more light and that work. Clean bathroom and bedroom rugs (carpet is old), working outlets in bathroom and water flow in master bath definitely needs improvement...Jim pointed this out. We realize there are bugs in Tx; we had live "visitors" come out the first few evenings and mornings.

When we showed up the property owner said he didn't even know we were coming. So he rushed to "clean" while we waited. He said he was so embarrassed that he would give us half our money back. It was late and I have 3 kids so we stayed the night against my better judgment. The place is disgusting! But I didn't have anywhere else to go since this was booked months in advance. The pictures on Vrbo is false advertising. There is dust everywhere. Don't think the place has ever actually been cleaned / vacummed although he claims to have a cleaning service come out. Toilets are just nasty! Dirt clods and crumbs.. I could go on and on! Owner was less than pleasant and knows that if the renter cancels or leaves for any reason that he still gets paid. I contacted Vrbo and they confirmed this and told me there was nothing they could do. I have all messages and pictures to prove everything about the owner and property. The owner only refunded what he said was half of the money after taxes and Vrbo fees after Vrbo contacted him. He gave me some sob story about how he grew up poor but he kept over $800 that should have been refunded to me. I even offered to pay for the 1 might we stayed in full but he wanted more! And then, because I was messaging him back and forth about this issue he threatened to come after me for email stalking. What? This is a business transaction and there was a huge issue. And like I said previously.. I have the messages and there was no stalking. It's called a conversation. To add to it... My children have allergies. Some more severe than others but they all have dust allergy. I was even having issues breathing and so was my 75 year old mother. So I couldn't keep my family at this property because it was dangerous to our health. I picked this property because it looked clean and well taken care of. Thought it would be safe for my family based on pictures and reviews. 100% false advertising. 100% scam! You do not get what is shown. And if you cancel for any reason the owner gets paid. I am appalled that Vrbo allows this! And absolutely disgusted that a human being could be so mean and greedy. Worst experience!

Hidden gem!
Jim was a delight and more than welcoming. The place caters to all ages and provides plenty of space for a family to stretch out. We saw two frogs, a small gecko, and some other local critters on the heavenly back deck. Also had a raccoon pass through early one morning. The gate is a big plus for the security factor and the king size mattress was so dang comfortable! Thank you for sharing such a lovely place.
