About this cottage rental
Leave the complexities of modern life at home and enjoy the simplicity that our off the grid Rivergreen Cottage has to offer. Rivergreen is the perfect getaway for those who like camping, but wish for a more luxurious, comfortable place to stay.
Come and experience the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains!
This cabin is located 10 minutes from Massanutten Resort and 20 minutes to the Swift Run entrance of Shenandoah National Park.
It is necessary to have front wheel drive or 4x4 in the winter to reach the cottage. The road to this cabin is not paved and is stone and dirt. Driving slow to reach the cottage is highly recommended. When there is snow on the ground, a 4x4 is necessary to reach the cottage. If you have a very low sitting vehicle, you may have issues getting to the cabin.
If you have mobility issues, renting this property would not be recommended.
Please note, this property is located on a working farm. While the cabin itself if fence in, you are likely to wake up to cattle outside, along with Duke the Donkey. The cattle will not try to approach you or your vehicle. Duke does like to eat out of your hand-after he gets over his shyness!
Additionally, this property is located in a town steeped in railroad history. Occasionally, you will hear trains. Please be sure to check out the train museum in the town of Shenandoah-just a short drive away.
As mentioned, this cottage is solar powered, with a back-up generator. This system is fully automated and requires no interaction from our guests. From time to time, especially when it's dark outside, the generator will turn on to recharge the batteries.
The cottage is small and cozy, perfect for a party of 2. The cabin will accommodate up to 4 guests, but can be very cozy.
Sleeping accommodations consist of a Queen Bed and a full sized futon.
Kitchen: Rivergreen has a small cooktop, mini-fridge, sink, coffee pot, cookware, dishware, soap and kitchen linens.
Living/Sleeping Space: Queen bed, and a full futon. Pillows and sheets are provided.
Bathroom: The bathroom has a stand up shower, sink and composting toilet. This is a water-less system. Please follow posted instructions. It is very important to note that a composting system is not like a "traditional" toilet with running water. Instructions are posted in the bathroom.
PLEASE NOTE! Due to the small size of this cottage, steam from the shower can trigger a false carbon monoxide alarm.
Additional Amenities: Gas grill, AC, wall heater, covered porch and private fire pit.

This little cottage was very clean and cozy. It is far off the road but close to a lot. A great location for Skyline drive. Good eats nearby.
I would recommend an SUV, a sedan might bottom out on the road coming in.
I gave 4 stars overall because of the latrine.. It is a compost toilet and there is an odor. The flies were bad because of this.
Don’t plan to do a lot of cooking. Pots pans utensils were limited. We cooked steaks on the gri and our forks and knives bent trying to cut them.
We have bad backs and the bed was very hard. But you are secluded and right on the Shenandoah River. There is a nice area to sit near the water. We drove down because the path is rather treacherous.
The price was right and Scot was an attentive and gracious host.

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed this unique place! The house is on a beautiful property and was a short drive to both Shenandoah and Elkton and maybe about 15 minutes from the nearest park entrance. The place is pretty small but was perfect for my boyfriend and I since we were spending most of our time exploring the surrounding area.

Had the chance to stay here with my teenage son while we toured the caverns in the local area. The host is honestly one of the best I've encountered, providing perfect directions and being super flexible as we had to make some last-minute changes. The property is gorgeous and perfectly separated from the main property, leaving you in the silence of nature and ability to view all of the stars. The proximity of the rover was a bonus and enjoyed by both the humans and our pet dog. Overall, this is one of the absolutely best stays I've had on VRBO and highly recommend it if you're touring the local parks and/or caverns. .

Perfect little get away spot in the mountains.

This tiny, off the grid house is well appointed, the air conditioner worked great (although I only needed it the first night), and the bed was firm and super comfy. Read the directions carefully. If you think you are lost because you are driving through the middle of a cornfield, don’t worry. You’re not. Just keep going. This house is literally in the middle of a cow field and I loved waking up to them grazing just past the fence each morning.
Make sure you read the instructions for the composting toilet. It’s not hard. It’s just different than you may be used to.
I didn’t use the TV, microwave, or stove because i spent my days at JMU. Even though it’s about 30 minutes from the university, it’s an easy drive and there is a Starbucks just before you get on the highway.

Very nice spot to get away. Off grid style with a cute small studio style cabin.

The property is in the Shenandoah valley with great views of the mountains. It's a nice solar-powered cabin with everything you need for a stay- grill, small fridge, 2 burner stove, microwave, and wifi. Plenty of chairs for outdoor seating. The owner was very communicative and helpful. I had no issues with the stay and highly recommend staying here for a hiking weekend or to get out of town and enjoy some quiet time. I look forward to staying here again!

What a beautiful place for a quiet getaway! My husband is a fly fisherman and the quick path to the river was easy to navigate. The cabin is cozy and has everything you could need.

My husband and our dogs stayed for a weekend getaway in July and we loved our stay. The views from the cabin are stunning and we loved the tranquility of the farm. Scot was amazing and offered us multiple local recommendations for food, coffee, and wineries. We definitely recommend grabbing coffee at Moxie 33 during your stay and getting wine slushies at White Oak Lavender Farm. The cabin was cool during an extremely hot July weekend and we enjoyed having a place with a shower to clean up and relax. Of course, this cabin is on a farm and there are animals nearby and some bugs. Didn’t bother us at all, but just saying for awareness.
Thanks for letting us enjoy this beautiful property! We will definitely be back :)

Overall, the stay is fine. At the price point, my spouse and I weren’t expecting luxury. We were excited to spend a weekend in Shenandoah Valley, go hiking, enjoy the scenery, and spend time with our dog. The house is located on a back pasture of a large farm. It is very beautiful. The first con for us was finding the entrance to the house. The road to the house goes through the farm on a rough terrain path. One part of the road is very steep, and I would strongly suggest bringing either a truck or SUV with good clearance to be able to make it. A car would likely struggle getting up the path. There is an electric fence around the house, which our dog zapped himself on once. The listing states walk to river, but the path is steep, overgrown, with only an electric fence to hold onto. The interior of the home was nice, but this is not the place for bug-fearers. The porch was covered in spiders. We found a few in the home, as well. On the first morning, my wife found a tick on my pillow inches from my head. There were a few stains on the comforter when we arrived as well. The owner was very responsive, kind and helpful. Overall - we had a good stay but want to let others know of what to expect.
TLDR: Pros - the price and location. The nearby town is lovely. 20 mins to Shenandoah National Park, wineries and brewries. Beautiful landscape. Hot showers.
Cons: Bugs (spiders, ticks), road may be too rough for a sedan, trail to river is steep and overgrown.

We really enjoyed our stay here, despite the cold weather. Feels remote, but it's actually only a few minutes from Food Lion and other stores!

This beautiful place brought me peace and comfort. It was the perfect getaway. This trip made me feel whole again. It was exactly what I/we needed. If you're looking to get away from chaos and the world...it was a home away from home. secluded but close enough to what's needed. I loved how we had options to get down near the river. That was good exercise for us and the dogs. Thankfully I had a few cows to motivate me with these hikes. If they can walk up these hills....then so can you! I thought. As they stare at me catching my breathe. haha
We had great service if needed. I was impressed. It was so cozy in the cottage. It looked & smelled so clean/fresh. We were able to me Scot. He went above and beyond to make sure we were settled in. With quick detailed responses. He even took the time to meet us per my request. So we got a tour of all the other available options for the future. I asked about places to eat (I LOVE food) He took his time and responded with plenty of options/descriptions/websites...that was fabulous cause I wouldn't even do all that. So that was a big + for me, We ended up eating at
Hank's Grille & Catering. Cooked in the rest of the nights. Hank's was a unique looking place...very cool. Food was bangin! Kline's Dairy Bar also has amazing hot fudge sundaes. I cannot wait to come back to this area.
This trip will forever have a place in my heart. Thank you for this experience.
"Come as you are, however broken
And we will see if we can make you whole again
Come as you are with your heart wide open"
Zach Bryan (first time listening to him while at the cottage. these words stuck with me.)
THE END. Thanks for reading.

My boyfriend and I had a great time staying with our dog. We wanted a weekend away to go visit Shenandoah and this location was great. It was a little chilly when we came and they made sure it was nice and warm upon our arrival. Amazing view of the stars at night. The listing was as described and whenever we had questions they responded back in a timely manner. Would definitely stay again.

My wife and I are long distance hikers and world travelers definitely used to rough camping conditions. But never, not in the most primitive cabins or yurts, did we have to experience such a level of ???
This "cabin" was exceedingly dirty. Obviously it hadn't been cleaned for a long time. Moldy shower curtain; Leaky A/C unit; Cob webs everywhere; Not even a table to have dinner (when a "full" kitchen is provided, one would assume that a small table and a minimum of 2 chairs would go with it? however: "no table was advertised..." was the owner's answer); No shelf or cupboard to put clothing on or in; No hook to hang a jacket or a coat.
And, YES, we have photos to illustrate these facts.

Very secluded pet friendly home. Stayed two nights on our way to OBX. Dogs had more then enough room to run around and the house was in a great location to take in the Shenandoah mountains.

Stop over on our way to Florida. Beautiful area. The cabin was small and comfortable, very much like "glamping". Visited beautiful Shenandoah National Park and Massanutten water park while we were there. Both close by.

Perfect Getaway
My girlfriend and I enjoy the serenity of nature hence why we booked the stay. The River access was awesome! It's a bit of a downhill/uphill hike but the best river access we've had since staying in the area (we've stayed in the area multiple years). It's an excellent spot for star gazing, the bugs aren't bad at all, and the cabin itself was clean and efficient. We weren't in the cabin much but when we were we felt at home and relaxed. Very peaceful. Scot does a great job with the property and it was everything we wanted and more.

Peaceful Getaway
My husband and I rented this property for a getaway. We wanted to get away from the 'busy' of our lives. This property was perfect. It is in the middle of a working cow field, at the back of a very large property, and not a neighbor to be seen. It was great.
I sent a message of the time we were going to be arriving and when we got there the lights were in and so was the heat! It was great! The communication was amazing.
This unit did have a composting toilet so that was a new experience. It really didn't have a negative effect on the stay. It is a green property which was very impressive. There really wasn't a time we could tell we were 'off grid'.
A truck or AWD vehicle with a higher clearance is probably needed to get to this property. There is a steep grade in one area of the driveway and a car just won't clear it.
I highly recommend this property to those looking to get away from the craziness of life and just slow down.

This little place was awesome quiet and simple. We made a fire and drank some wine in peace. We were never bothered by anyone and the only thing we heard was the river. We will definitely be back next year.

The cabin was perfect, my girlfriend and I stayed for a weekend with our dog while visiting Shenandoah NP. We found the place to be very clean and the views were beautiful. Scot was very helpful, and now that the place and ran on solar power with a backup generator there was no need for any set up! The area down by the river was so peaceful and beautiful! Highly recommend

Very beautiful location and near Shenandoah National Park. The cabin is definitely "off the grid". As described before, hot water is hit or mhas which was fine. Be sure to conserve hot water when you stay. My wife of course used all the hot water so I got the cold shower. Other than the hot water beinf hit or miss the cabin was excellent. I would stay again!
*** one small detail that would be great is if the front door had blinds as well. I think my wife watched too many scary movies but didn't like that someone could look right in from the woods***

Lovely place, surrounded by nature
We enjoyed taking the walk down the driveway to the river to cool off in the water during the day. Lush trees line both sides of the river for as far as you can see, and the water was calm and shallow enough to wade out and gently float downstream on inner tubes. At night, we enjoyed stargazing and even saw some shooting stars! We were glad we had a cooler since the refrigerator is only on when you turn the generator on. (On the flip side, we discovered that the WiFi works without the generator.) The surrounding farmland and hills are beautiful, and we were happy to be near Shenandoah National Park, where we enjoyed hiking. Thank you, Scot and team, for a wonderful stay!

Couldn’t of asked for a better weekend away! If you’re looking for a remote little cabin this is it. It’s secluded off of a huge working farm, right next to the Shenandoah River. It is ran off of a generator, but my husband said it was very easy to use. Be prepared though for cold showers. The hot water was very hit or miss, but for us, it added to the adventure. Everything you need for cooking, but make sure to bring a cooler because once you turn the generator off, the refrigerator isn’t very useful. Scot, the manager on site, couldn’t of been more helpful & accommodating to us. My husband had trouble starting the generator and he came right over to show him. My hair dryer wouldn’t work ( pulled to much power) and although I told him I was fine without one, there was a brand new one on our doorstep when we returned from dinner. We didn’t realize until later that there are other properties on site that you can rent as well. We found a ton of things to do near by. Lots of trails, White Oak Lavender Farms, Kline’s, Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, Rolling Hills Antique Mall are just a few. Being able to bring the dogs was a must and they loved running around. We can’t wait to come back!

The cottage is the cutest, small, quiet, and perfect tiny house for a getaway. Though tucked back away behind a farm away from it all, except some cow friends, you are still minutes away from town, the park, and tons more to do. The view of the river through the trees and Shenandoah in the distance, I loved staying here.
