About this cottage rental
Castaway Cottage
Picture a place where fresh seafood abounds. . . where you can step out the back door, enjoy the salty scent of sea, and pick fresh vegetables and flowers right from your own private garden overlooking the water.
As you dine on this delicious fare, you will see unforgettable sunsets while savoring some of the freshest food on earth - harvested that very day.
Imagine all this in the comfort of a cozy, romantic cottage where simple pleasures make time stand still.
Simple pleasures like sitting on a new sofa, fresh coffee in hand, watching the morning tide come and go through the panoramic windows overlooking the harbor.
Or a stroll down the shore road to see clam diggers out on the mud flats harvesting the clams you will eat later that day.
Or a walk on the beach where the only sign of another person is the sea art left behind in the sand.
Imagine having a lunch with you – crab meat sandwiches would be nice, and stopping along the beach to gaze out at the islands and ocean while sampling its fruits.
A trip to the wharf to pick up the clams and to watch the lobster boats come in with their haul. Picture trying to choose between steamers and lobsters and deciding to have both!
Back at Castaway Cottage the lobster pot awaits as well as all the accoutrements needed. Now that dinner is planned imagine cozying up in the lighthouse room for some afternoon reading. There's room for two on the built-in bench bed.
Amazing how the sea air causes sleepiness - and enhances the appetite. Thank goodness for the clams AND lobster!
Visualize heading out to the garden in the late afternoon sunshine, after a good rest, to select vegetables and flowers for tonight's table. Can you see a bottle of Seaglass Sauvignon Blanc with this meal?
After sunset imagine lighting the pellet stove with push button ease, making up a tray of tea and dark chocolate laced with blueberries, cranberries and almonds and settling in to watch a favorite show on PBS.
Picture yourself ascending the stairs and nestling into new beds with new quilts – washed and scented with the same fresh air you have enjoyed all day.
The only thing you are likely to hear, apart from the light sound of waves lapping on the shore, will be the early morning bahing of some sheep at a farmhouse two hundred yards away, or the light rumbling of the lobster fishermen headed for the wharf to catch your next dinner of lobster.
A stay at Castaway brings rest, relaxation and comfort. Just read the reviews. We even have a housekeeper who keeps the place spotless. Her name is Mrs. Hughes.

Cabin was perfect. Off the beaten path, quiet and had everything we needed for a great week.

We sat on the beach near cottage in complete privacy and enjoyed watching the tide come in and the wild roses;ate seafood at Helens in Machias and at Scovills (this one is cash only)in Harrington....there are still places on the coast of Maine with no crowds and neon! A special 50th wedding anniversary trip! Cottage is comfortable and as described;sleep downstairs if steep steps/slanted walls a n issue.

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. The location is peaceful and quiet, and everything was clean and just as pictured. Just a note - if you have mobility issues, accessing the upstairs bedroom may be difficult for you as using the staircase involves some bending and twisting. It was fine for us 60-somethings with just slightly creaky joints!

Beautiful, quaint location off the beaten path. Loved the location for convenient access to points north of bar harbor. Beautiful stars including milkyway. Great seafood locally. Host provided detailed list of restaurants and places to purchase seafood. And excellent instructions for appliances and pellet stove. Clean, well stocked, supermarket nearby for groceries. Highly recommend and would love to visit again.

This cute little cottage has everything you could need to make your stay comfortable and peaceful. Even though it rained more than half the week I was there, I found myself enjoying sitting in front of the picture windows and watching the tides, the fog, the gulls, the geese, the hummingbirds and the eagles soaring. What a special spot this is! My soul was soothed after a very stressful year and this was the perfect place to get rejuvenated.
The couple days of sunshine I was graced with were spent out by the garden just relaxing. The garden is full of different veggies and flowers, so I did help myself to a some of the bounty, thank you Alan and Brenda! The owners are very kind and made sure that I was safe once I left the cottage during Hurricane Lee which just happened to arrive the day my week had ended. What an exciting experience that was!
All is well and I am very happy that I stayed at this wonderful cottage by the sea.

The cottage was perfect for me. I wanted a place that was quiet, and a good place to explore Downeast Maine, and I found it. I wanted a place where I could bike, hike, and paddle, and it was all very close by. The neighbors were very friendly, the road was quiet, and the cottage was well furnished with what I needed. I could have asked for more.

I’ve always stayed near Acadia, but decided to go a little quieter this year and I found this amazing cottage on the water. Mornings were spent having coffee while watching the shore birds and locals digging for clams. The cottage faces west, so no gorgeous sunset was missed as we enjoyed our fresh lobsters from Caler Cove Lobster just 1/2 mi. Up the road. The cottage has everything you need including a charcoal grill and vegetable garden just out the back door! Our hosts were very responsive and provided an incredible amount of local information to help plan our adventures for the week (wine tasting, local blueberry farms, hiking, Maine Sea Salt company - many owned and operated by local families) One of my best Maine stays!

South Addison is a great place to get away. The cottage was perfectly kept with a wonderful view. Great place to relax and drink coffee watching the tides come in and out.

Maine Cottage
The cottage is located in a quiet little neighborhood with wonderful views of a small ocean bay. Very well kept and decorated. A good location for exploring the northeastern coast of Maine. Bedroom upstairs is tight and with no AC can get warm. One or two added handholds could be added to make the downward entry to the stairs easier. All in all a good value.

For one week, I escaped the shackles of the pandemic in this beautiful, remote and friendly fishing village Downeast. On my first day I was greeted by a local lobsterman hoping to sell me some fresh, out of the sea, lobster. On my last day, I walked the trails of a truly magical nearby forest called Ingersol Point Preserve.
The cottage is sparkling clean ( in fact I felt challenged to find any dust) comfortable and simply darling. It sits a top a short hill looking straight out to the Eastern Harbor. Even though I didn’t have perfect weather, it made no difference to me, and the sunsets were still amazing. Brenda and Alan were absolutely lovely hosts and quick to respond to any questions I had. I would definitely like to recommend this cottage. I hear they decorate for Christmas too.

Wonderful little cottage in a wonderful location
We had a wonderful stay at Castaway Cottage. As soon as you walk in the front door, you see the magnificent view of the cove, the island and the ever changing water with the tides. The cottage was perfect, having a everything we needed to prepare our meals and then sitting at the dining table overlooking the water. The location was wonderfully quiet and peaceful. It truly gave us respite from our busy every day life. Thank you to Brenda for all of the information, directions and maps that showed us the local nature walks and beaches. We found each one and had fun exploring the coves and points along the coast. We took day trips north to Lubec and south to Arcadia and returned "home" to the comforts of the cottage. I loved that I could take a short walk to the little beach every day at low tide and search for sea glass. It was also nice to walk the shore road to view the lobster boats and just to walk in the woods. Absolutely a wonderful cottage in a wonderful location.

Great location!
Had a lovely 2 week stay with my sister and a friend. Great location! Easy travel down to Acadia and Bar Harbor and then up to Campobello Island. We were busy every day. Home was very clean and well supplied. Cooked most meals there since eating out meant about a 30 minute drive. Loved sitting outside with a glass of wine enjoying that fabulous view!

Very quiet and relaxing. We were able to wake up look out the window at the ocean just yards away. Also were able to observe the working harbor. Just the place to read, relax, and explore coastal Maine. Away from the hustle and bustle of larger towns

Beautiful views
Brenda and Alan have a beautiful cottage. Everything mentioned in the listing is exactly as described. The sunsets were amazing, Acadia was only an hour and a half away. We took a ride up the coast to Lubec and took a boat tour with Downeast boat tours which was the highlight of the trip. The next day we headed over to Beal island for the best lobster rolls ever. Excellent vacation!

hidden gem
The view of the ocean on the drive to the cottage is literally breathtaking. The cottage is small so bring only what you need and stay with people you are comfortable sharing everything with. The location is remote and incredibly beautiful, and the house is charming and well-maintained.

Beautiful location!
We recently stayed in this cottage with out two young daughters. The cottage was small but we had plenty of room. The cottage was clean and the owners were very helpful and answered all of our questions. There are numerous hiking trials within 30 minutes of the cottage which offered breathtaking views. We had a great time!

Charming Cottage with a Wonderful View of Tidal Waters
This cottage was all we expected and more. The interior is very nicely decorated with comfortable furniture and a kitchen well stocked with cookware, utensils, and serving items. The best feature is the view. One can sit inside on the couch or outside to watch spectacular sunsets and the tides going in and out. Traveling around the town of Addison , one can get a sense of the native life of downeast Maine. The owners left plenty of reading material to guide visitors to explore the area far and wide. We recommend this cottage to anyone seeking natural beauty and a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere.

Our stay at Brenda and Alan's cottage
We really liked our stay at at Alan and Brenda's cottage. The cottage had all we needed for our stay. Twice we used the furnace because it did get nippy at night! The cottage is well insulated and it heated up nicely. We brought water with us. Because we've had tap water that was less then what we liked at other places in Maine. But here the water was very good. There are a couple of things that caused me to only give 4 stars instead of 5. We did not sleep upstairs because it was very difficult for us to go up and down the stairs. We both have some joint issues which caused this to be hard. And the other thing is the bathroom is tiny! Fully functional, but tiny! Small detail. But wanted to note this. The area around Addison is very pretty with a lot of things to see. We saw Eagles and a seal. And believe it or not. We saw a beaver in the saltwater! Which is pretty rare. Shopping can be a bit of a challenge. Which we knew because we know the area. The shop and save located about 10 minutes from the cottage carries most of what you'll need. We did take one trip to Walmart located in Ellsworth. Which is over an hour away to stock up big on other items. If you do go to Ellsworth. Then I recommend stopping at Jordans. A nice roadside eatery which carries a surprising amount of food choices. You'll pass this on the right on the Downeast Highway heading into Ellsworth. The weather for the week we were there was fantastic other then one day it misted and was foggy. And one night we had Gale warnings which shook the place up a touch. I was beginning to wonder if we would wake up in OZ! All in all. I do recommend staying here. The view from the backyard is worth the cost of staying here. We spent hours outback with the cameras and binocular watching the wildlife and the folks out digging up clams or whatever at low tide.Alan and Brenda were very helpful in answering the questions we had in regards to the cottage. And with my questions about the beaver I saw.

Lovely home amidst a garden and facing the bay. Lobster pound right down the road; private beaches nearby in walkable distances. Everything plentiful; my favorite was the pellet stove that kept things warm on the chilly nights. Using upstairs isn't an easy task with low ceiling (I am short). Padding for second bedroom and sofa bed would help. The owners were easy to communicate with and extremely helpful for finding places to explore and suggest places to dine. Best suggestion was for whaling trip, which turns out was one of only a few still taking people out. (Eastport Windjammers). Excellent trip!
Keep early closing times for shops and restaurants in mind; some were already closed for the season so check before driving distances.

a lovely quiet spot to relax
This is the quintessential Maine cottage - wide painted plank floors, a view of the cove, and fresh lobsters just down the road. We enjoyed our stay here - it was a very quiet peaceful location. The garden area was just the right place for some time in the sun reading and the cottage was exactly what we were looking for. Thank you for sharing your place with us.

Our month long visit to this little piece of paradise was wonderful. This is our second trip to the Jepson's South Addison cottage! The first four week stay was so memorable (2015) that we decided we would to come back!
We visited many of the locations from our visit and found new ones to add to our list. One of our favorites was Steve at the Maine Sea Salt Company in Machais. Who knew how interesting the natural making of sea salt would be. We found the best Reuben at Karen's in Calais, well worth the trip. Made it to 2 festivals, Lobster Festival in Winter Harbor and Blueberry Festival in Machais. Bought 10# of blueberries from Del and made pies, pancakes, topping for ice cream! Brenda supplied us with recipes for blueberries, lobster (almost daily feast), and mussels. Even had fresh bread using the bread maker!!
What a wonderful place that holds many very special memories from both of our visits! Thanks Brenda and Alan for sharing your family cottage with us. We love it at South Addison in Downeast Maine!
