This home is a real gem and easily accommodated our large family. It is in a great location within walking distance of the Tofukuji station, and not far from Kyoto station either. It was a perfect home-base for our travels throughout the greater Kyoto area for the week.
The owner (Akiko-san) was very supportive and accommodating too. The house is well cared for and we all enjoyed the traditional, artistic decor, and the modern conveniences. Highly recommend!

We loved staying in this beautiful home. Akiko was awesome about answering any questions before we arrived. Also helping us with forwarding our luggage. Our group of 6 had plenty of room to spread out with 2 full bathrooms and a large kitchen. We also loved how close we were to the train station -5 mins. Also there are stores really close for getting beverages and snacks for your stay. The house is well decorated and a true gem. We will highly recommend Akiko and her properties.

Our family of my husband and I and adult children stayed here for 4 nights. The prep for how to find and advance communication was excellent (including helping us with a Christmas Day dinner reservation we were struggling to make from the USA before we arrived). We loved the blend of rooms with tatami mats and western beds. The kitchen had a large table and as noted in the listing, rice maker, pot for hot water, pots, pans and dishes. We loved the tatami room with the Samari. We loved the heated toilet seat and the shower had plenty of warm water. The location is wonderful--in a neighborhood near small stores for basic groceries (7/11, Food Mart, and several others) and the subway. I had one questions re a location we were going to and received an answer right away. I highly recommend and would stay here again.

The house was amazing for our size group! And the amenities were up to date and very convenient. The kids enjoyed “Jim” and having the separate eating/chilling room from the bedrooms offered great flexibility with the schedules for all the people in the group. Everything was clean and property managers were super responsive to all our needs. And one of the happy surprises of the place was the location in relation to the city overall. The JR station was really close and if you enjoy walking the streets of the city, everything is relatively close to get to! Thanks for everything!!

The machiya combines the best of a charming, traditional, historic home with modern comforts and convenience. Our group included seven people (adults and three "tweens") and the home was both cozy and spacious enough for us to enjoy for a week in the cool autumn weather. Very well maintained and well furnished, in a quiet neighborhood and conveniently located near shops, restaurants, Tofukuji train station, and walking distance to several major temples. The host, Akiko, and the property managers were all very welcoming and responsive to messages. They assisted us very kindly with recommendations, restaurant reservations, and luggage transfer. The only thing we thought could be improved is that the walking directions for finding the machiya were a little hard to follow (especially at night), but we did finally make it there! A few wording changes in the instructions would address this. We would absolutely love to visit again and are already dreaming of a return to Kyoto. Many thanks! Arigato gozaimasu!

This was a lovely home to stay at. We really enjoyed the modern kitchen and dining space as a common area. It was located well with a Family Mart on the way back from the Tofukuji station.
The only drawback I'd say is if you have mold sensitivities, there was a slight odor attached to our belongings after leaving the VRBO. And there were several mosquitoes around the outdoors, so bring spray.
Besides that, it was a lovely home with the right balance of historic and modern.

This is a lovely Japanese house that easily accomodated all 8 of us. The kitchen was fully equipped and had a lovely kitchen table to gather around. Terrific location near JR line. Great local restaurants an easy walk away. Bed rooms were lovely. We'd highly recommend this house.

This home is an fun, quaint neighborhood with lots to do and only one stop from Gion or Kyoto Station. Outstanding decor, lots of space and wonderful vibe. Look no further, this is the place to stay! Large home that can easily accommodate up to 10 if needed.

We had a wonderful stay at the Tofukuji Machiya. There was plenty of space for our family of seven. We were looking for a traditional Japanese living experience for our boys and this property was the perfect balance of tradition and modern conveniences. Great location, just a short walk to the local train station. Highly recommend this property!

The house is as good as you see it from the pictures. It is beautiful and comfortable and has all the amenities you could wish for. The location is also great - we were able to walk in 20-30 minutes to all the locations we were interested in. We only used the local transportation system (for which you have a station 5 minutes away) when we traveled outside the city. Highly recommended!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Machiya. The home was great, as expected. The most phenomenal aspect was amazing communications with Akiko ans Patrick! Anytime we asked for ideas or assistance, they were very responsive. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

The place is as special as the beautiful photos! We chose this for the comfortable kitchen/dining/living area and the wonderful location, close to the train station, and it did not disappoint!. We had a lovely time! Thank you!

I came for vacation with my family. The directions to the place was easy to follow and it was easy to check in, especially when we arrived fairly late. The home was very spacious and had plenty of room to accommodate 8 adults. It is conveniently located to tourist attractions and the train station. Being an old house, we had a power outage when using plenty of appliances at the same time, but the staff were quick to come & help resolve the issue. The stairs made it difficult to go up with heavier luggage and hard for older people to go up and down. It’s even more convenient when there is two bathrooms for such a large group to use, which is difficult to find in this area. The experience to stay in a updated Machiya made the overall trip amazing. I would definitely recommend it and would definitely stay here again.

The property decor is perfect. The style was both beautiful and comfortable. We travelled with young kids and were a bit worried with some of the antique pieces. However, the house was so well laid out there was no problem. The bathroom was wonderful. Kitchen great for family meal. Above all, Akiko was so incredibly help and truly made out time in Kyoto special. We would definitely stay again and highly recommend.

Tofukuji Machiya is a comfortable place to call home whilst exploring the beautiful city of Kyoto. The kitchen allowed us to eat in for several meals, which was great after long days walking. Akiko was a great host who quickly responded to all my enquires & helped book meals out.
Loved our time at Tofukuji Machiya.

The house was great. It was well decorated!! Which made for a unique experience. The information about Kyoto, bus routes, and the local area was fantastic. I kept hitting my head on the traditional doors, lol, but worth it to stay in the traditional style home.

This was an outstanding place! The 6 of us loved it. Spacious and very clean. 2 toilets and 2 showers. Western and tatami bedrooms. Modern kitchen. Washer/dryer. 3 minute walk from Tofukuji station (JR and Keihan) which is 1 stop from Kyoto station by JR. Also convenient to go to Nara. Convenience store and few restaurants nearby. Overall, highly recommended for an authentic experience.

Me and my 7 other family members stayed at this beautiful home for 4 nights and throughly enjoyed it. Located in a little alley a short walking distance from the Tufukuji Station, we were able to easily travel to all the local sites and we enjoyed going to the local markets and making our own breakfasts and dinner one night. We ordered take out ton katsu from the restaurant on the corner one night and ate it at home and highly recommend it! Loved the decor and the mix of traditional and western bed options...Akiko was easy to work with and I highly recommend this property!

Very stylish, traditional house with modern touches and lots of room. Excellent for a group of 4 or more. It was perfect for the 5 of us. The owners obviously went to a lot of effort to make the house comfortable and appealing. They also saw to many details for a comfortable stay. The location is great excellent. A short walk to the super market, train station, and bus stop. Loved it.

本当に素敵な物件でした。同窓会で楽しく使えました!
キッチンでみんなで夕飯の支度をしたり、1階でまったりと語り合ったりと本当に理想的な生活空間でした。また行きたいです。

What a wonderful house in a great, quiet location!
Our family of 8 enjoyed every minute we spent in this great house and there was plenty of room for all of us to have private space.
Just a 3-minute walk from the Tofukuji JR station and the Family Mart and a 1-minute walk to the bus stop. Plenty of nice restaurants in the area and easily within walking distance of several temples.
This house has two very nice bedrooms with western beds and two (possibly three) great Japanese-style bedrooms with futons... each with their own A/C units.
The house also has a dish washer and clothes washer and two great shower rooms.
If coming back to Kyoto with a large group, we will definitely stay here again.

We really enjoyed staying at Samurai Machiya. We were a party of 5 adults and 2 thirteen year olds. The house was comfortable for all of us. It is also near a JR line station, which was great as we were traveling on the JR Pass. We appreciated the guidebook with information, particularly where the supermarkets and local restaurants are.
This house is on the edge of Kyoto in a residential area. It was good to see how locals live. There is great train, subway and bus access to the central area of Kyoto. The subway is 3 stops to busy Gion area.
A great alternative to hotel accommodation and we appreciated the easy booking and proactive communication from the owners.

We loved everything about Kyoto Tofukuji Samarai Machiya. The location is only one stop from Kyoto station which made it quick and easy to access every place we wanted to go. The house gave us an authentic Machiya experience but still had modern conveniences. There was a lot of room to spread out and the choice of western style beds or tatami rooms was nice to have. The doors are low (my husband is 6'4" and had no problem) and the stairs are steep but that's part of the charm.
We found great places to eat in the neighborhood. Someone had mentioned a good place to eat at the end of the street...we weren't sure exactly where that was but on our last night in the rain we found a small restaurant with only a counter with eight stools. Go to the end of the walkway that the house is on, turn left and it is on the right side about 50 feet. It is simple, clean and delicious.
Go everywhere early. We had Arashiyama Bamboo Grove to ourselves before 8:00. By around 9:00 tour groups started arriving and it lost a lot of its zen. Try and go to the top of the Fushimi Inari Shrine..it is a climb but worth the effort.
Akiko and Patrick were easy to communicate with and gave us very thorough directions and information. Great hosts definitely make it easier to be in an unfamiliar place. Many thanks from our family!
