About this cottage rental
Family and dog friendly spacious 4 bedroom self catering holiday cottage situated in a quiet location in Porlock, Exmoor National Park has breathtaking sea views Exmoor Holidays offers the perfect peaceful retreat to relax, unwind and explore the stunning Exmoor coastline and countryside by car, bicycle, horse, landrover safari, or on foot. Numerous footpaths including the South West Coast Path and Coleridge Way are all accessible directly from our doorstep.
For those wanting to get away from it all our large south facing garden with sheltered patio and sun terrace captures the sun from dawn through to dusk and is a haven of peace and tranquillity where one can quietly sit and listen to birdsong whilst the sun goes down.
Situated in a peaceful lane in the traditional Exmoor village of Porlock but only a couple of minutes walk from the historic Ship Inn and traditional Porlock village centre. Because the property is built on a hillside most of the accommodation is on the first floor, accessed via a flight of stairs. Bedroom 4 is on the ground floor with its own kitchen & lounge diner for 2, perfect for friends/families who wish for their own space or who require ground floor accommodation. We are very popular as a generation vacation where the grandparents or older children sleep in the downstairs where they have their own ground floor kitchen, bathroom and lounge diner so they have a bit of their own space should they wish for it whilst the younger children and parents sleep in the 3 bedrooms upstairs.
Also popular for groups of extended family and friends who are on a walking, mountain biking or riding holiday, or just seeking to escape and relax in beautiful Exmoor countryside and require 4 bedroom accommodation.

A lovely clean home, with good facilities, ideal for a multi-age family stay.

Plenty of room for the family and fury friends to get together in this well and comfortably provisioned holiday home in the lovely village of Porlock. Ideally placed for exploration of surrounding area and beautiful walks from the door. Also a great selection of pubs within close walking distance.

Our family stayed here to celebrate our daughter’s 40th birthday. We were a party of 7 plus a dog and the house offered very comfortable accommodation and was very well equipped. We’ve had a wonderful week and created many lovely memories. Thank you.

The property was clean and well presented.
Great base to explore the area. Lots of great walks and pubs. Would highly recommend.

Superb location, just right for exploring the area, very close to all amenities including welcoming pubs serving good food, try the Ship, literally next door to the property, good food and beer, but if you don’t feel like going out to dine this property has an excellent outside dining area with bbq and very comfy garden chairs and table. Within walking distance of the Weir or Beach but the better option is a short drive to the National Trust car park at Bossington then walk to Hurlstone Point the views are spectacular. As I said this is a fantastic place for a, in our case, family holiday, we all returned home relaxed and happy. Thanks to the owners for letting us stay

Gorgeous spacious property
It was a joy to stay here. The property is lovely and clearly well looked after and in a lovely location too. The village itself was also really lovely with great walks and a nice park which both the younger and older children enjoyed. Jacquie was great to communicate with and always prompt and helpful in her emails. We’d love to visit again if we get chance

Great
Great property and Location, very clean and just as described, the pictures shown do not do it justice.
The village of Porlock is lovely with some nice shops, a well stocked Spar shop, chip shop, Chinese and three pubs. The top ship and the Castle serve lovely food.
There is a lovely woodland walk or coastal path walk to Porlock weir where you will find another nice pub The bottom ship.
The house has everything you need and a lovely well kept garden. Would not hesitate to go back to this property, it’s lovely.

This was our second stay in this spacious house. Wonderful sea view from upstairs living room. Even a pair of binoculars provided.
Plenty of activities nearby. Family enjoyed paddle boarding at Porlock Weir and would recommend Dunster Beach.
The house is well equipped, comfortable beds and sofas for relaxing.

Great property in a super location with hot and sunny weather. Property catered well for our 3 generation family holiday. House has interesting multiple level layout, has everything you need inside and out and views to the coast. Older guests must be comfortable with steps and stairs to enjoy the whole property. Located a few doors from a local pub/Inn offering good food and close to a bustling village catering for most needs. 30 min walk to Porlock Weir and coast make it a good location for dog walkers. Well placed to explore Exmoor. A great week for all the family...thank you very much for use of the property and excellent communication re questions asked.

Great property with helpful owner
Great, well equipped property in an ideal location, close to local pubs, restaurants and minimarkets and within easy drive to main Exmoor tourist spots. Excellent local walks nearby. Enclosed garden is ideal for dogs. Very helpful and responsive owner. Thoroughly recommend, particularly for larger multi-generational groups who would benefit from combining Maxwelton and Bracken.

A lovely place to stay for a family or group
We stayed here as a family of 8 adults (and 1 small dog)in August and it was our first getaway since lockdown for Covid. As well as being spotlessly clean, the house was really spacious with several different places to relax without all being on top of each other. At the same time it was exceedingly well equipped, seating 8 around the main table inside or the patio outside and with plenty of crockery, glasses and kitchen equipment. We all enjoy cooking and it was unusual in a holiday rental to have access to the right number of pans, knives or chopping boards. There was even spare cupboard space for our own food.
For part of the week we had a heatwave and an unexpected bonus for us was that the downstairs bedroom was beautifully cool, as it’s built on a hill so that all the main rooms are upstairs but they are also at ground level at the back.
There was enough in Porlock and the surrounding area to keep us busy but it was also nice to sit and relax in this comfortable house and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a getaway for a group.

A delightful stay in an ideal location
From start to finish this has been a delightful experience, enabling us to have our whole family together to celebrate a special birthday for our daughter. The house is almost perfect for a group of up to 8 adults and is very well equipped. The location is just a few minutes walk from the centre of Porlock but is peacefully quiet with lovely sea views. As we are all musicians a bonus was to find a piano in the upper lounge, although I believe the owner would prefer it only to be used by those who will care for it.
For February, the weather was very kind and we enjoyed some great moorland walks and visits to places of interest, including Dunster Castle. Probably due to the time of year a few places were closed in Porlock, such as the Fish and Chip shop and the Cheese Shop. However, the SPAR is a great little general store with lots of local produce.
The owner, Jacquie, has been very responsive to all questions and has done a lot to ensure visitors enjoy their stay. Heartily recommended.

Great family and friends week away
We had a brilliant time at this property. Although Porlock is very small, there are some great pubs and this house is centrally positioned to enjoy Porlock and the surrounding area. The housekeeping team met us on arrival as we had a shopping delivery come just before arrival time - this was very flexible of them and they were very welcoming. The house seems huge and it’s great to have a separate laundry room when you have four small kids with you. The arrival goodies were appreciated- my son loved the sponge cake and wanted it for breakfast! We found the rooms to be comfortable and spacious. For people travelling with small children it is good to know that the house has a cot, high chair and plenty of stair gates. There is a well-stocked toybox and a piano to entertain. Our youngest boy loved playing with the little tykes car in the garden. We hope to return.

Very clean and tidy well equipped and lovely views and position
Unfortunately the bed downstairs mattress was very uncomfortable
The toilet was not working downstairs
The shower could only be used if no one ran a tap whilst anyone in shower causing long delays in normal life with 6 adults and two children in property
Could not use shower downstairs at all so this was not very good I over the 5 night stay!!

Wonderful space and views.
We had a great stay, lots of room, warm, clean with everything we needed, the views from the front of the house are spectacular, a large dining table to enjoy our evening meals around.
We had a blip with the heating, but the caretaker( next door) sorted it out quickly.

A fabulous house in a stunning location
We've just returned from a stay at Maxwelton and Bracken - the house is amazing and catered for our every need, I would highly recommend a stay here. We've been to Porlock many times over the years and stopped in a lot of places, b&bs/hotels/campsites/self catering etc - this is the best place we've stayed in - we loved it!
Communication with Jacquie, the owner was excellent and the lovely welcome gifts of a homemade cake and a bottle of wine from the housekeeper was a lovely touch.
We were a party of 6 - 4 adults, 2 teenagers and 2 dogs. The house is very spacious, very well presented and had everything we needed. The utility room is very useful for the dogs - dog bowls, towels, biscuits and chews were provided. The garden is well maintained with a lovely patio set and BBQ, there is also a seating area for 2 at the top of the garden with views out to the sea - a perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine whilst watching the sun set.
The kitchen has got the 'home from home' feel and plenty of pots/pans/crockery etc. The lounge is bright, airy and spacious - we particularly liked the window seat and large dining table...and the log burner for the cooler evenings. The bedrooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and felt cosy. The bathroom is finished to a high standard, all towels are provided and there is a constant supply of hot water. My teenage son thoroughly enjoyed sole use of the ground floor apartment, again this is finished to the same high standard as the main house (accessed via an internal door) and contains everything you need.
We absolutely loved the house - thank you Jacquie for allowing us to experience this beautiful place, a true gem in a fabulous village location.
Many thanks
Mrs & Mrs Podmore & family

Location and property excellent.
The standard of the property and the facilities provided are extremely good - especially for our "Christmas" stayaway. We greatly appreciated the care and maintenance shown by Mr & Mrs Miles, the Caretakers. The "dog-friendly" aspects of the house were also much appreciated by a couple of visiting Jack Russells!

Splendid!
This is a splendid property suitable for the larger group if the two units are taken together.
The downstairs flat is suitable for a couple if used on its own, but when the connecting door is open you have the run of the whole house so ideal for a family with grandparents or a separate couple staying with them.
When we went in March it was just the two of us and we just had the downstairs flat, but in August there were eight of us so we just used the downstairs flat for sleeping in and spent the rest of the time upstairs with the rest of the family.
The pub next door is handy for evening meals and they do an excellent local cider. We also had fish and chips from the village fish restaurant and found the Costcutters and Spar shops handy for local shopping. Otherwise we went to Morrisons when we were in Minehead.
As for things to do, a week is nothing like long enough! We went up and down Porlock Hill a few times (low gear NOW!) and visited Exmoor, Lynmouth, the Valley of the Rocks, Watersmeet, Tarr Steps, Dunster Castle and Watchet. We went to Watchet on the train using the West Somerset Railway from Minehead so didn't have to worry about parking in Watchet.
The beach at Minehead is good for the kids, although parking can be a problem in August. The loos for Minehead beach are a bit inadequate and leave a lot to be desired.
I think that was our only gripe. Other than that it was a splendid week and I have no hesitation in recommending Maxwelton and Bracken, either together or individually, to anybody. I can also recommend Porlock as a place to stay for touring the area and visiting all the attractions that West Somerset and North Devon have to offer.
