About us:
If we build it they will come, or so we hope. My husband and I, after raising 3 kids and seeing them thru 2 tours in Iraq, while I battled cancer went looking for a peaceful, comfortable cottage on its own land because we really needed solitude and some down time. The search began in NH, then Maine and finally Vermont. The closest we found was a cabin in VT with a woodstove and jacuzzi tub, unfortunately it had other cabins all around us, no views and cost $300.00 a night! We stayed for the weekend and talked to the owners about their experience owning cottages.
In the mean-time my husband got a job at New Hampton School and while driving around found a 230 year old house with 36 acres and beautiful views that reminded him of his grandfather’s cottage in up-state NY. He had many fond memories being a child there and couldn’t let this house go. Should we? This house was not even insulated and had been a summer camp for 50 years. After much consideration we purchased the old home with dream views and most importantly…land.
Then began 3 long years of making it livable. Still, we felt very blessed and enjoyed our views, the peace and quiet, but we never forgot the stress of everything we had suffered and couldn’t forget the many fellow veterans and cancer survivors and wished we could bless them with what we had.
Could we combine both the need for eventual retirement income and help others too? Well we owned the land across the street separately, so began the dream … and then the work. A business plan, a budget (how to stay on budget), purchase of an excavator to clear the land & put in a septic, get a loan, draw plans, hire tradesman then do the rest ourselves. After many LEARNING MOMENTS & 2 tireless years of working almost every weekend (my husband worked his full-time job!) many phone calls, tradespeople, bought everything needed to build & furnish the cottage, hubby still did most of the heavy lifting and we both called on anyone we knew for help or knowledge with anything we didn’t already know.
Finally, after 2 long years I was finally able to decorate it. We are so GLAD it’s done and we are very proud of what we have accomplished. We hope you like it as much as we do.
Actually, you’re helping with our dream to help others just by renting. For every extra $ we can save after deducting costs we hope to put a percent into giving a veteran or cancer survivor some time here for free. Another way You can help us bless others is by giving us good reviews as well as signing our guestbook.

But most importantly, we hope you enjoy your stay, please read the cabin companion book and familiarize yourself with helpful tips as we also labeled things and left notes to help. I collected some of our favorite things to do in the area as well as brochures. Please don’t hesitate to call us directly if needed!
We thank you in advance for taking good care of our cottage. Please leave comments on the chalk board if anything is needed/wanted, compliments and constructive criticism.

Your owners/Hosts,
Kirk and Sue Beswick

We really enjoyed this house because it was away from civilization but within driving distance of things to do with the kids. We enjoyed exploring the town of Meredith, going on a scenic train ride, playing in the arcades, and going to Squam Lake Natural Science Center. If we come back to New Hampshire, we would definitely stay here again.

This little cottage was just what we were looking for! While the property was beautiful and secluded, it wasn't far from downtown shops and eateries or the lakes. It was incredibly clean and had everything we needed for a nice long weekend getaway (cooking supplies, linens and towels, and even the small touches like the candle by the jacuzzi tub). The bed was also very comfortable which made it had to get up in the morning. Sue and Kirk made us feel right at home, and it was nice knowing they were only a call/text away. Our little dog Cody also had a great time exploring the property. We would definitely love to come back soon!

We had a water emergency at our home and had to head out at 3am a day early. Other than that it was beautiful but rushed. Really nice and good area for walking the dog.

I went here with my boyfriend and senior dog. The first issue we encountered was the dirt road that was not discussed in the listing. Having a car with low profile sports tires is not ideal for a dirt road. Upon arrival, we found their pet policy, which also was not listed on VRBO. It states that the dog is not allowed on the furniture. My senior dog was very anxious on this entire trip and we were not able to leave her alone. She didn’t understand why she couldn’t come up on the bed, as she always sleeps with us. It also states that they do not want the dog to urinate on their lawn because it will kill the lawn. In my opinion, this is one of the aspects that you deal with if you are dog friendly. All of these additional restrictions on the dogs should be detailed in the listing so there are no surprises. In addition, we were unable to locate the large fields shown in a couple of pictures on the listing. The pictures made us believe there were more areas to roam around, other than the immediate yard. This was not the case. One picture showed an open field around the fire pit, but it has since severely overgrown. Unfortunately we only stayed 2 of the 3 nights that we paid for due to the upcoming hurricane. We were not interested in dealing with downed trees or flooding along the road. We did appreciate the cleanliness and quick responses of the owners (although no response was received after the issues were described). We had high hopes for this rental that were not met sadly.
