About this cottage rental
Appledore Cottage is a lovely end of terrace cottage with a large garden, plenty of parking and glorious views over the surrounding hills. The cottage is very comfortable, well maintained and very well equipped (including, despite its rural location, free high speed Wi-Fi internet). Appledore is light and airy by day and cosy in the evenings. There is a large, slate floored, kitchen living room with sofas, television and a wood burning stove at one end with fitted oak units at the other and a circular dining table, dishwasher, oven, fridge and freezer and washing machine. The kitchen living room has recently been extended to give more seating space and wonderful views to the hills and great access to the garden - it is a truly wonderful place to sit and view the glorious countryside. Also on the ground floor is a very cosy sitting room with open fire, a downstairs twin bedroom and a shower room with a good powerful shower. The downstairs has underfloor heating. There is easy access to the large garden and a lovely sheltered patio for al fresco dining. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms and one twin bedded room. All the beds are of a very high quality and the bathroom has a lovely large bath. The cottage has fast free internet Wi-Fi.
Appledore Cottage is set in the small hamlet of Thorgill. It is at the end of a no through road which makes it very peaceful but not isolated. The cottage has lovely views of the surrounding hills and countryside and has a large garden with plenty of space for sitting out or playing. There are wonderful walks from the house of varying distance and challenge and relaxing in the garden on a summer's day is an absolute joy with the babbling stream to be heard over the adjacent field. There are maps in the cottage which you are welcome to use and we provide plenty of local tourist information. Rosedale is a wonderful valley in which to walk and for those who want to walk further Farndale, Hutton le Hole and Lastingham and all within reach on foot.
The nearby village of Rosedale Abbey has two pubs, which both serve meals, and two small shops both with tea rooms. Both shops have basic provisions and one sells newspapers and has internet access. There is a lovely walk from the cottage to the village. There is also a small golf course at the end of the lane and there is horse riding available locally. There is good shopping at the local market towns of Kirkbymoorside and Pickering which both have a weekly market. There is a swimming pool and leisure centres at Pickering. One of the leisure centres has tennis courts. There are plenty of good food serving pubs and restaurants nearby. Whitby, Scarborough and the North Yorkshire coast are within easy reach as are York, Castle Howard, Flamingoland theme park and zoo, the North York Moors Steam Railway, Goathland and Heartbeat country and the Danby Moors Centre. The Yorkshire Moors National Park is full of lovely villages with great pubs, fantastic walks, wonderful streams and a host of idyllic spots to relax and unwind.

Great cottage with a large garden, good scenic views and is very well stock. Highly recommended.

We had a two week stay in Appledore Cottage in July. It was perfect. The cottage had everything we needed and is really comfortable - best we’ve stayed in and David is a lovely host. Great walks from Thorgill and loads to do in the national park. Superb pubs - too numerous to mention - The Postgate stands out for food and experience and The Blacksmiths for beer (both on walking routes). Use the NYM website and the booklet in the cottage. Stupendous cake at The Abbey Tearooms (Rosedale Abbey) and The Old School House (Grosmont). Can’t recommend highly enough and will definitely be back. Enjoy!

We had a great time at the cottage, David was super helpful and on Whatsapp for anything we needed. The location is pretty rural but you are about 1.2 miles from the small village and pubs. Lots of walks nearby.
We arranged our Tesco shop to be delivered on arrival day as these is no decent shop in the near vicinity which made life easier. There was also basics in the cupboard eg seasoning / oil etc.
The weather was pretty wet, so David rather helpfully turned the underfloor heating up to try and dry out our wet clothes / boots / dogs and children :-)
One bit of feedback would be that we could have done with some towel rails to dry our towels after showering. As we were 2 families we very much kept our towels in our own rooms and the weather was miserable so hard to dry them out.
Thanks for a great stay

Roomy cottage at the end of a country lane in pretty valley. Ideal for walking and cycling. Log fires available if evenings are chilly and air sourced heat pump for wintry days. Pub and shop in nearby Rosedale. Ll you need is some decent weather for a great holiday.

Totally awesome
From booking to leaving, you couldn’t pick a single fault with the cottage.
It was well clean, tidy and fabulously comfortable.
It was one of the best well equipped cottages we’ve EVER stayed in and was very much like home from home. Simply perfect.
The beds were comfortable and cosy and such an ideal cottage in every way.
The grounds were beautiful and the location, well what more could you wish for. Breathtakingly beautiful and to wake up to see those views and hear the birds every morning, was medicine to everyone!
The owner is so obliging and accommodating and a true perfect gentleman, nothing was a problem and answers your queries to perfection!
The hardest part was leaving as the cottage really holds you and has such a loving atmosphere!
The village is so close by and again, so beautiful.
We know the area so well, and to us, it’s the best cottage in the area by far!
Thank you for a truly fabulous stay!

Excellent cottage in the heart of the North yorks moors
Wonderfully peaceful location near Rosedale Abbey. Great local walks with plenty of super pubs, once you can drag yourself away from such a comfortable and well equipped cottage!

Secluded and quiet well equipped cottage
Lovely situation especially for walking.
We arranged online supermarket delivery and bought extras from Rosedale shop 10 mins drive away.
Also supermarket at Kirbymoorside 25 mins drive.
Fresh eggs 2 mins walk away !
House very well equipped, we ate in every night, 6 adults, plenty of room at the table and comfy seating.
Lovely patio area outside.
Few house quirky bits but if you follow hosts instructions, all good, for example keep topping up the bath and you get a deep hot bath !
Never ran out of hot water, heating came on one evening and very efficient.
Garden not completely fenced off from next door so maybe a problem with a dog, but ours stays close by so not an issue.
Good area for muddy boots and coats.
Highly recommend this house ,
Communication with owner excellent.
Definitely give 5 stars

Idyllic Cottage
Appledore Cottage is, quite simply, one of the loveliest places we’ve ever rented for a holiday and we’ve rented a lot all over the country and abroad. The fact that it’s obviously a much loved family place shines from every corner of the cottage and adds hugely to its charm. It’s incredibly comfortable, envelopes you in a sense of familiarity from the moment you walk through the door and has everything you could possibly need for a really special, relaxing and enjoyable holiday. There are fabulous walks all over the Moors from the front door (on footpaths), amazing wildlife, a number of great pubs to walk to for delicious lunches and above all really, really welcoming people. It’s also very quiet and away from but easily in reach of, on foot, of Rosedale Abbey. When we arrived, the only sounds were a cuckoo and several curlew calling, the noise of the brook and the sheep on the hill above the cottage - our idea of bliss.

This spacious and comfortable house was the perfect base for relaxing in and using as a base for exploring the local countryside.

Lovely cottage with great views and lovey location
The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. Great location with lots of walks and mountain bike tracks, We enjoyed our stay and would stay again to cover more of the moors that we didn't cover this time. The only improvement I would suggest is the fact that there is only one shower. With only two bathrooms, in the cottage and one shower it can make it quite a struggle when there are 8 guests. The upstairs bath would be better with a full shower over to help with this, the plug didn't fit very well either. However this is a small thing and didn't effect our holiday, just a suggestion for improvement.

Outstanding stay
Appledore Cottage played a big part in our enjoyment of our week which was for a special family gathering. Its spaciousness with two living rooms, the quality of the fittings and furnishings , the excellent equipment (including free internet) and heating (open fires and central heating) and not least the delightful garden all made for a very comfortable and relaxing time. (Our dog enjoyed it, too, in this dog friendly place!) We admired all the work which had gone into restoring and extending what had been a dilapidated old cottage, and turning it into first class accommodation. I personally feel grateful to anyone with the enterprise and energy to save one of the old Moors houses.
The setting of the cottage is delightful in a beautiful and tranquil valley with fine views and with access to many great walks - within Rosedale and beyond to the daffodils of Farndale and the pleasures of the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge. We all look forward to staying at Appledore Cottage again.

This cottage was much bigger than it looks and beautifully but practically appointed and maintained.
This stunning and peaceful location was just what we needed for our whole family. With 2 lounge spaces, everyone could relax in the way they needed too, with space for our granddaughter to play on the floor. The kitchen is well designed and easy to work in without being cut off from everyone else, and helpful touches like having a few ice-cream tubs and clip boxes made taking a picnic out easy without using foil and film. A week was not long enough to really explore the area as there's so much to do. Highlights were a long walk around the valley and a day on the steam railway from Pickering.

Heaven on Earth
After a long flight from Atlanta and drive from Manchester airport we were embraced by the peaceful valley of Rosedale and the cottage of Appledore on a warm summer evening as we drove into Rosedale Abbey and then down the farm road to Thorgill.
It is remote enough to escape the noise of the world and see and hear God's creation all around but close enough that within a half hour by car, all of Yorkshire's treasures are soon within reach. It has been a long time since we escaped the television, which was available but low on our priorities but we had no need for the world news.
The cottage was a perfect location and had everything we needed, including washer and dryer, and that long lost treasure in the USA, the washing line. The garden in the rear was used by our grandkids to play games and the hills behind the house were great for short hikes.
We shopped at Aldi's in Pickering, just a short drive away. Whitby was our favorite visit but Robin Hood's Bay, Saltburn, Ampleforth, Rievaulx and many other locations were also on our list.
Another treasure was worship on Sunday at St Mary's, Lastingham, where we were welcomed as though we were Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding by the friendly and helpful members.
Would I recommend this location? You are darned right I would as an American would say. I am a Yorkshire born and bred and it was good to be home with my US and UK family. We had a lovely dinner at the Lions Inn on a Heathclifffe type Sunday with the wind whistling and rain falling, where many of our UK family members gathered to meet us.

NICE COTTAGE AND VIEWS
It was a nice property which was clean, warm and fully kitted for 8 people. It is in a quiet location with lovely views over the countryside. The garden contained an abundance of wildlife including grey squirrels and various birds including long tailed tits and, over the field at least 5 roe deer.
I thought the only thing it needed was a stairs gate at the bottom of the stairs to prevent tiny tots from climbing up them.

A wonderful cottage in a great setting
We are just back from 2 weeks at Appledore Cottage and had a wonderful time. The cottage has a well stocked kitchen - we like to cook, even on holiday - and plenty of space with two living rooms, each with it's own TV. The garden is large with plenty of space for any children/dogs to let off steam and there is a lovely patio area accessible from both living rooms. There is no need to get into the car every day to go walking as there are several walks which you can do from the door. Food shopping in Rosedale Abbey is limited but we ordered on-line from Tesco before arrival. We didn't go to Graze on The Green in Rosedale Abbey, but apparently the owner is a trained pastry chef and it came highly recommended by a local. The neighbours are very friendly and dogs seem to be welcome in The North York Moors, so no need to eat outside or leave the dog in the car.

Perfect cottage in beautiful Rosedale
A truly lovely place to enjoy a holiday. Every need is catered for in this extremely well appointed and tasteful cottage.-from everyday essentials and comforts inside or out in such a peaceful setting in Rosedale. The cottage is so homely , welcoming and with such attention to detail. Plenty of choice for visits in car ,walking in stunning moorland or just relaxing . In fact whatever the weather we had no problems with activities. Our family of varying ages and interests enjoyed everything here -from walks, beach, excellent restaurants or just enjoying this unspoilt interesting area in and around the cottage . Highly recommended for comfort and care .Thank you for a lovely family holiday

A lovely cottage in a beautiful valley
The house is well-equipped and the fixtures and fittings are of high quality; it is clear that the house was not originally set up as a holiday rental because there is a lot of expensive equipment. The views are excellent and a short walk from the front door reveals Rosedale in all its glory. The beds are comfortable and the only sound which is likely to disturb a good night's sleep is the birdsong! We intend to return!

Lovely property in an idyllic location.
We had a great holiday staying in Appledore cottage. The cottage is traditional but very comfortable and spacious, with beautiful views in all directions. It contains all the mod cons to make your stay comfortable and good wifi which kept our three teenagers happy. The surrounding area is beautiful and we spent many hours walking our two dogs in Cropton forest which allowed them to run freely off their leads. This is worth knowing as dogs need to be kept on leads in areas near to livestock. Would definitely recommend this cottage.

Great cottage in a great location
Perfect place to escape from it all, but still within reach of a variety of activities if required. Quiet location in an historic valley. Cottage provides everything you need and is surprisingly spacious. Good broadband connection, but if you're desperate for a mobile signal be prepared to run up the hill behind the cottage.

Fantastic cottage in a fantastic location
We really enjoyed our week at Appledore in Thorgill. If you're looking for a week away in a the depths of the North Yorkshire Moors, then this cottage has everything you need.
On your doorstep you have fantastic walks with the quaint village of Rosedale abbey a walkable distance away. The cottage has some fantastic views, venture a little further by foot and there is lots more to see. By car you’re perfectly set up to explore Scarborough, Whitby and the picturesque Staithes. Head due south, and there's the fantastic city of York, with lots to see and do, and shop.
The cottage is everything as described. It’s spacious, warm, well stocked with all the amenities to enjoy your holiday. We loved having the separate sitting and living rooms which meant that we didn’t have to fight with our children over what was on TV. Despite its remote location, broadband is surprisingly fast which is great if you are someone who can't live without the internet.
Several high street supermarkets will drop off your on-line shopping to the cottage, so don't feel like you need to ram your car full of food beforehand.
If you have young children/toddlers then I'd suggest packing a couple of night lights with you. When it gets dark at night, it gets very dark.
We will be back.

Wonderful relaxing stay.
Beautiful, well equipped cottage with gorgeous views and walks. Lovely garden and sunny patio. Really comfortable beds.
There is the most delightful, easygoing walk into Rosedale Abby, crossing the bridge over the river. (A delight for children and dogs). This only takes 25 minutes (reasonable strolling pace), to get to Rosedale where there is a selection of lovely tea shops.
The walk over the top is little more strenuous, but worth the effort. Many other walks which we did not have time to explore.
We certainly hope to return.

Appledore cottage is a very comfortable and well appointed house, there was absolutely everything you could possibly need for a relaxing family holiday. We love to cook and the kitchen was ideal both in terms of layout and equipment. There are seating areas outside in the garden and we were very fortunate with the weather so able to enjoy all the house could offer. Very comfy beds and sofas which we often find is not the case in holiday lets, but this is clearly a family holiday home and this is obvious from all the furnishings and all the extras.
Great walks direct from the door, friendly neighbours, a local farm offering eggs and conserves. Lots do do in the local area with lovely villages, cycling and walking. The moors and valleys are very pretty and all the local towns are full of character and interest.
We had the contact details for David the owner who was very helpful. There was a welcome pack waiting for us which was very appreciated.
All in all a great holiday in one of the best properties we have stayed in. I would definitely recommend to friends and family

Delightful cottage!!!
This is a cosy well looked after cottage in beautiful surroundings. We had a great family holiday, can't recommend the cottage highly enough. David called us on the morning we travelled up to check if we were okay and the neighbours were very friendly. This is a really lovely area lots to visit and do and it was a delight to return to the cottage each evening. Beds were comfy and the cottage met all our needs as well as giving us lots of space to be which was just what we needed. Would have loved to stay another week. Thank You

Secluded, peaceful and very comfortable
A lovely property up a narrow country lane in a beautiful part of the world. There are excellent opportunities to walk, ride and cycle and the coast is within easy travel.
The property is very comfortable and spacious enough for 8 (4 adults and 4 children in our case). We came in the summer but I could imagine that it would be lovely and cosy in the winter with the log burner lit.
You do need to plan your shopping because the narrow roads mean that it takes significant time to get to a shopping centre, and the fridge is a little on the small side (a supplementary one in the garage would help).
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Appledore and could easily see ourselves returning.

A perfect family cottage in a beautiful spot!
Appledore cottage was just beautiful. We were a three generation family with three dogs and the living and outside space was ample and comfortable. The cottage was clean and welcoming. Large bedrooms and comfy beds! The open plan kitchen dining and family room was perfect for family time together. You can tell that this is a well loved family home and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here - the owner made contact to check we were all ok and so did a neighbour which made us feel really well looked after. Lots of great walks from the doorstep. The village has a few Good tea rooms and pubs and you are within easy reach of the beautiful Yorkshire coast. We would definitely stay here again to enjoy the peace and quiet which wasn't even spoiled by the early morning cockerel chorus!

Although this is an end of terrace house, it felt very private. Lots of outdoor space, including a lovely flower-filled little courtyard with a big table and plenty of chairs. Inside the cottage was very spacious and comfortable, and very well-equipped. There was lots of info about things to do in the area. The cottage is set in gorgeous countryside, and we saw lots of wildlife (including a hedgehog in the garden!). Kids said it was the best holiday ever!

Wonderful cottage, glorious setting. Plenty of room for our family, 6 adults ,2 children plus 2 dogs!
Everything we needed was found in the cottage, lovely garden for children and dogs
Thank you for wine and chocolates, very nice touch. All in all a great time had by all, hope to return again sometime soon.
Once again thank you for letting us stay in your wonderful cottage.

The property was very clean and well organized. There are two open fires that you can use. One is in the kitchen/living room area and the other is in a separate living room. There are two music systems where you can play cds. There is a cable to attach to your smartphone so you can play your mp3s also. The bedrooms were clean and comfy with lovely views. There is a big garden and patio chairs so you can enjoy the garden with friends on a sunny day. There is a large, deep bath that is great to use after a long walk. We loved this house and would definitely stay there again as would my visitors who have pets.
The local area is beautiful, less commercial than say The Lake District but with that comes irregular opening times for shops and pubs in the village. Just try to plan in advance for such trips and don't be upset when places are closed. The nearest place for your big shop is Pickering, so try and stock up before heading out there.
Charming villages such as Hutton Le Hole, Lastingham and Helmsley to visit. Helmsley has a brewery which is fun for ale drinkers. Helmsley has great shops and a castle. Our fave pub was the Blacksmith Arms in Lastingham. Food was excellent except for one dish......my Mushroom risotto. Overall the whole area could improve on its vegetarian dishes but great for fish and meat dishes.
The church in Lastingham dates from the 7th century and has a fascinating crypt. Beautiful architecture and worth a visit.
Overall we loved this stay!

This is a great house in the quiet valley in the North York Moors which we have stayed at twice.
On the way up to the house from the south of England, David (the owner) rang me to tell me there was a phone and internet problem effecting this house and a few others. He went out of his way to help us around this difficulty and was always on hand to assist in any way he could.
We found the house nice and warm and liked the layout of the downstairs dining room and kitchen. A great downstairs shower as well.
Plenty of parking room for 2 cars.

The cottage was very clean and tidy upon our arrival, and the box of chocolates and bottle of wine were very welcome after the journey down Rosedale Chimney Bank. The fixtures and fittings are all of a very high standard and it has everything you need, including dishwasher, tumble drier etc., The surroundings are beautiful and we were very lucky with the weather. Our 2 families had a lovely holiday in this cottage, we found it spacious and enjoyed sitting out in the courtyard after a busy day sight seeing. Kids and dogs enjoyed the garden too. We would thoroughly recommend this to anyone thinking of staying in the area. We also enjoyed the North Yorkshire Moors Railway trip to Whitby, we had a great day at Scarborough beach and a lovely meal at The Blacksmiths Arms in Lastingham. All in all a fab holiday.
2.5
A surprisingly large house in a tucked away location. It was perfect for our family gathering and we enjoyed the way we felt at home straight away. The instructions provided were very good. We especially enjoyed having everyone in the living/dining/kitchen room. Good walking from the door or short drive away. Great mountain biking in local forests or on the disused railway track. The pub is 1/2 walk away and had good food and beer. We would love to go back.
