Very cozy traditional beach house with fabulous screened in porch.

This is a very unique property. An old house perched on top of a dune with a stunning beach below. Next to Warren Dunes State Park, with long stretches of beach. The view from the screen porch is truly lovely.
Be ready to climb stairs, to get up to the house from the road and to get down to the beach on the other side. There are well maintained stairs and walkways.
The house is full of the lives of the Deutch family, and the artwork of Steve Deutch. You feel steeped in that history and it is fascinating to explore the work and history in the house. I found a binder with oral histories of the neighborhood (next to the TV). Fascinating reading.
The house is in "original" condition - not a modern show piece, but really very nifty. A little musty, but opening the windows to the lake breezes cleared it out.
The house is very thoughtfully equipped with beach chairs, towels, kitchen items and tons of books for your reading pleasure.

A very interesting property inside with plenty of books and art to enjoy. The best part is the short trip to the beach (although quite a few stairs!). Next best is sitting on the screened in porch with a view of the beach and Lake Michigan. The property managers were very attentive and made sure our stay was perfect.

The house is a blast from the past, very unique and quirky. The location is the main reason we loved staying here. Private beach access, beautiful view of the lake and awesome sunsets! Be aware there are many steps up to the house and down to the beach.

I really enjoyed my stay here at the Artist Colony. Everything was perfect from the screen porch sitting area to the easy access direct lakefront. Lots of stairs make sure you are in good shape when you come. It is a very special house. You can tell there is a lot of history here and happy times have been spent over the years. Normally I like a much more modern setting but in this case I was inspired by the homes traditional appeal and beautiful sculptures and art work. Sort of a step back in time. You can hear the waves from the house.
Thank you for extending your home to us. I look forward to coming back soon!

Perfect Lake Retreat
We had a great stay at the Artist Colony. Quick access to the beach was perfect, and we also took advantage of fun local shops and restaurants as well. The view from the screened porch offers the best view of the lake, especially for sunset. Highly recommend and will return!

Ideal for us
We loved our stay here. This is an ideal property for adults who do not need the latest in modern convenience. Very throwback and that is just what we wanted. A lot of steep stairs going up to property and a lot down to lake. Not a problem for us but may be for some who are limited physically. We would love to stay here again and likely will as soon as it is available again.

Old school cabin with a great porch
There are a lot of stairs and the parking is tough! But once. Your settled the screen porch view and sound of the lake makes it all worthwhile. The house is hot on warm days but we used all the fans and honestly sat at the beach or the porch. The beach is beautiful and walking distance to WarrenDunes state park. They provide beach chairs and beach towels which was great! It’s an old school vibe cabin!

Great stay above the beach
This house was perfect for a summer getaway. We were nervous about all the stairs with a 4 year old, but he caught in quickly and wasn’t fazed. We spent a lot of time on the beach. It was often quiet, especially in the mornings. Also enjoyed walking down the beach to Warren Dunes State Park. The interior of the home is creative and maintained well. Great view of the lake through the trees. We would stay again.

Perfect escape !
Surrounded by art, photos , books and every room the view and sounds of the lake. The 43 stairs up to the house did take us by surprise and direct access to the beach should be fixed -and when it got warm on our last lucky day the house smelled like pipe smoke ( we donot smoke ). Kitchen well stocked with cooking utensils but make sure to bring your own kleenex coffee, filters , and blow dryer.
Definitely recommend and hope to return !

A world away on the edge of the lake
The house is a step back in time in all the best ways. It feels as though it has been a happy place for families for a very long time. It is charming, well stocked and situated beautifully between the woods and the lake. It should be noted that there are 44 steps up to the house and parking is at the bottom. If you check in after dark, consider a flashlight for the stairs. It helped! We never moved our cars. We walked the beach, Warren Dunes State Park and hung out in the house or on the screen porch. It was an amazing, relaxing and beautiful place to spend time with our family.

The Beach
Wonderful porch overlooking the lake. Online listing was accurate, in that it is just 100 steps to the beach. Quiet, accommodating. Looking forward to staying again!

Step up to Paradise
This property was perfect for my family of six. The steps up from the road and down to the beach kept those nasty pounds off. The beach is great for walking and only eight minutes away from the heart of Warren Dunes. The beds were comfortable and the living area perfect for family games. Dinner at Timothy's Restaurant was excellent, as was breakfast at the restaurant at the Swedish Bakery. We are coming back.

Charming cottage, great weekend get away.
There were six of us four adults and 1 14-year-old young man. We were here for two nights. We couldn’t have asked for a better property. It was clean and comfortable had everything we needed. We cooked every meal! A couple of things number one: please be aware that to get up to the house there are several stairs. there is no driveway so whatever you bring and whoever you bring half to go up several stairs. 2) we could have used more kitchen towels, there is no washer or dryer available. The location is perfect and the house is adorable and very comfortable and entertainment friendly. We never even turned on the tv on!!!

Wonderful Getaway
This cottage was all it was advertised to be. It had a great relaxing feel - enough modern amenities, but the feel of a retreat that has been appreciated by generations. We were only there for 3 nights and didn't want to leave. So many neat books to read on its shelve - a month would be perfect. It is secluded, under towering trees that frame the serene view of Lake Michigan. It's about 400 yards from the beaches at Warren Dunes and the wonderful wooded trails in the hills over the dunes. Very close to Sawyer - which has a great garden center where you can buy almost anything and a brewpub with great food, especially Barbecue. Lots of steps up from the one-lane dirt road to the cottage, and down the other side to the lake. Enough to add to the feel of seclusion; maybe too much for the old and infirm without some effort. We really wouldn't change anything and I hope to get back to this cottage again. I've stayed on Lake Michigan for almost 40 years from Traverse City down to Union Pier. This cottage and location are among the best.

Wonderful place, quiet, secluded, steps down to the private beach.
We had a wonderful time...perfect location, charming decor, and just steps down to the private beach. Only things missing are a dishwasher and laundry facilities, but even that lack can't dim our perfect week.

Just like home
As soon as you walk in and see the lake through the trees of the very large screened porch the stress melts away. The Beach area is clean, private and serene. A 10 minute walk down the beach (with kids) to the dunes. We loved the seclusion of the home but still within close proximity to great eateries. Well stocked home with basic amenities and clean.
