I loved the uniqueness of the experience. We embraced what we had walked into and as a result had a great time. You see the town was deserted. Most houses boarded up. (An aging population I believe?) It was a short train or bus ride to all the touristy hakone stuff which made the location good.
Ok, I want to clarify. I did like the experience as we embraced the unusual circumstances. It’s more a be prepared warning. The tiny izakaya only opened one night out of 3 we were there. The limited convenience store and bottle shop were closed by 3 or 4 (depending on the day.) so be organised with food or prepared to travel on the bus for restaurants. The very few locals we did see would avoid us. The villa was very, very, run down and cold. The garden and discarded furniture in the yard added to an abandoned feel. We embraced it as it felt like we had stepped into a horror movie. 🎥 laughing and enjoying the bizarre abandon of place.

It was such a heartwarming stay, and the location is incredible, looking outside to see mountain views and trees rustling in the wind was phenomenal. Location is amazing, the house is good, and the host Yoshi is really nice and really helpful!
Nothing bad!
3.9
It had a good view and the surroundings were very peaceful and quiet
The place was run down and very dusty, the floor boards were broken downstairs and damaged
3.9
Spacious, very clean, old authentic Japanese house.
Surrounded by green, crickets at night
Kitchen minimally equipped , steep climb to the road/parking (hard with suitcases).
Lacking English instructions on utility usage (Laundry, hot water, etc.)
Drive distance from town/shop/restaurants

The bedrooms were comfortable, spacious, clean with amazing views. The host kept in touch.
Unfortunately before we arrived, the host said that the property had been damaged by previous guests. Despite this the downstairs was a bit tired and there was one small sofa bearing in mind the villa accommodated up to x8 people.
Also the location was up and down very steep hills which was hard work with suitcases.

slightly tired interior, could be more clean (especially behind the bed). would recommend a light repair

The surroundings.
Strictly this!
The view from the windows is fantastic.
Where should I start?...
The photos are NOT representative of the current state of the complete house.
First there is a very strong, pungent, overall smell of mold, fungus like an old cellar. There is a huge, old sofa in the living room that smells the most. Opening windows doesn't help. Yea, even with the fresh air from the mountains around. The smell must also come from the carpet, which is hiding broken floor supports (most probably rotten wood).
Almost every wooden part of the house (windows, doors) is in a bad state. Imbibed with moisture, wet, fungus, broken paper part, abstract repairs, obstructed rails. The decoration is some old furniture. The bar is full of random empty bottles with no reason of existence. They are trash. Not decoration. There is s wall broken with holes because of sharp, hardback of the chairs. The kitchen is big but very very old, and in strange state. The fridge seemed dirty with dirt from hands. There are some remaining from various sauces and other stuff with unknown origin and expiration. The only new part of the house is the bathroom which is working. The bedrooms are equipped with some spring mattresses which are also old and quite hard. Given the state of the house, we did not considered them clean just because they look clean. The lights are not the ones showing in the photo. The entrance has a rug written ZEN which does not help you to feel ZEN but gives correct information about the house age and abandoned state. The vegetation around the house is abandoned. No pruning and trash removal. Most probably in couple of seasons they will enter the house.
Advice to the owner. Physical wear of a house, especially close to a forest, is expected. The owners are there to take care of it Please throw away trash including the sofa and carpets in the living room. Repair the windows and doors. Replace beds. These are basics.
Till these are done, please shut it down.
Then please, update the photos.

The house is unique and beautiful in a lovely nature setting
We were 3 people so it was big for us
If you want to experience traditional house it is great place
My initial plan was to arrive by car, but I had to arrive by train, so it was hard to carry heavy luggage uphill for 10 minutes including passing unsupervised train track
Also the owner, which I have never saw had advised me wrong key code which held us back for 30 minutes, the comm with the owner via booking messages is slow.
Also I was very disappointed that the owner agreed but changed his mined regarding leaving the luggage in the house only for 1 hour more than check out, causing me to carry our luggage and having to pay extra for storage on the train station.
The house is very old and is good maybe for part of museum but I think less suited for long stays.
Parts of the facilities were uncomfortable.

Amazing villa with wonderful view and in the center of the widely spread Hakone.
Thank you for the experience.

location was good
fridge simply stinks. Some appliances don’t work. Lots of paper window panes broken.

In a nice location with buses and trains nearby to take you wherever you need to go. Very residential with few tourists around which we liked. Beds were very comfortable and condiments/cutlery etc are all provided. Would recommend if you want to stay in a Japanese style home. The owner is one of the best ive seen during all my years of travelling, very responsive and willing to help with anything.
Door code is very convenient if youre staying with a group, as you dont need to worry about keys.
The house was very cold on arrival and took a long time to heat up. If the heater could be turned on a little bit prior to the guests arrival that would be great.

The view from the widows was amazing, just being surrounded by nature in general was really nice. The host was also helpful and responded quickly!

Host was great, very responsive. Property was very cute, location is very convenient with small Izakaya places near by.
Not the best place if you have young kids or elderly parents as there is quite a number of steps.

The house is in a very nice place with a wonderful view. Spacious bedrooms.
The kitchen needs updating and more cleanliness.

The owner was very helpful and gave us detailed information on how to get to the property from the train station. The property is very spacious and is located on a quiet road - it was perfect for a secluded get-away while also being easy to access via public transportation. The kitchen has a small cooktop and a full-sized refrigerator, so we were able to prepare meals easily.

Location was very secluded giving privacy. Nice cosy good size bedrooms and overall good size for 8 members. Very close to bus stop and train station. We had perfect stay. Would recommend to travellers.

The location was beautiful and great proximity to our planned activities. The futon mats and rooms were comfortable. I really liked having some traditional Japanese mixed with contemporary conveniences.
The proximity to hearing the train if guest is looking for more quite. The steep hill is challenging, but not a deal breaker. Just good information to pass on before booking. Letting the guest know of known repairs, so there isn't fear of being responsible with items already there.

The host was very attentive and make sure we could check in with ease. The house was very clean and very clear communications were laid out. We stayed during a cooler time a year and were able to keep warm and cozy.

Loved the location. Owner gave detailed directions on how to get to property. The beds were very comfortable and plenty of blankets to keep warm. The property was very spacious with the two rooms upstairs with a bathroom and then a living room/dining room, kitchen, shower room and separate bath downstairs. The location was super close to the Ohiradai train station (easy 5 min walk). We really enjoyed our time at Taisho.
Only complaint I had is the amount of towels given to us for the 3 night stay. 3 small bath towels that barely wrapped around our bodies. I would suggest the owner supply more towels to use during a 2 or more night stay. Even using the same hand towel to dry your hands gets a little gross after a few days.

The house is spacious and clean. Facilities are within our expectation. While it is relatively old, the house seems well maintained and has updated some of the area in accordance to modern way of living. The property owner are well aware of safety and seems has done a good job on keeping it to standards. The manager Yoshi-san and Ryosuke-san are quite responsive and supportive so we don't have much issue. One thing we point only was the egg and bread for cooking that was shown in one of the photos for booking.com, which was previously given or left upon check in. I thought it is quite handy to have it for breakfast but that was no longer offered this time as some complaint about it. I understand and feel sorry for the manager but I also think that is the best move. At least, we have free and unlimited drip/brewed coffee (UCC) to enjoy during our stay. The property is highly recommended for bigger group or family that intends to stay and have a trip around Hakone for 3 dayd or more.
The house itself is good but the access road is tricky and could be dangerous to some people (like disabled or in wheelchair) and vehicle. The access road going to the property has a really steep slope of around 25% or more and one of the most steepest residential road I have ever seen in Japan. It is really good that I follow the manager's recommendation for nearby free parking.

Yoshi responded quickly and met us on arrival and helped us with our bags. The house is very lovely and fit our two families perfectly. The Tenzan onsen he recommended was fantastic. Thank you for having us!
