About this cottage rental

Master bedroom has queen bed, second bedroom has a full bed, and the third bedroom is a sleeping porch with two twin beds. This cottage was one of three guest cottages that. along with her 'Bungalow', formed the estate of Ella Wheeler Wilcox. Frequent visitors to 'The Bungalow' were writers such as Jack London, who may have written Call of the Wild in this very cottage (or down the street in a local tavern). The floors are warped with age but the wood paneling is warm with the memories of the visitors who were drawn to this neighborhood for it became the site for many social gatherings that brought together literary and artistic figures of the day. Ella Wheeler Wilcox described this spot in her poem GRANITE BAY
At Granite Bay, such beauty lies,
In rocks, in waters and in skies,
As poets dream of Paradise.

The rocks that clasp fair Granite Bay
First saw her charms at break of day
And flushed to pink from somber gray.

To guard this bay from rude alarms
And shelter her from all that harms
Great trees reach out protecting arms.

Down to the very water's edge,
Between the granite rocks they wedge,
And watch in silence from each ledge.

Defending points and islands stand
And reefs of rocks run out from land,
To keep rude billows well in hand.

The river and the bay are friends;
One slender arm the river bends
And all her anchored boats defends.

So much one island loves her grace,
He fronts all dangers in his place,
To shield the beauty of her face.

Loved by the forest and the shore,
While sun and moon, and skies adore,
The strong rocks hold her evermore.

At Granite Bay the wild winds rest;
The sunlight is her welcome guest;
The moon goes mad upon her breast.

Not here is heard the sea gulls' scream.
They come, but only come to dream:
Far out at sea their sorrows seem.

At Granite Bay, far out at sea
My cares and troubles seem to me;
Love, joy and hope remain, these three.

Though forth my wandering footsteps stray,
To realms and regions far away,
My heart dwells here, in Granite Bay.

Cozy, relaxing and well equiped, our stay in this historic little cottage was just what we needed for our family while attending our son’s graduation. Kathy is a great host and easy to communicate with.

A wonderful cottage with history written all throughout. Beaches are a stones' throw away and you're surrounded by that typical New England shoreline.

Unsafe House and Misleading Listing
Unsafe House and Misleading Listing
Several issues: 1) NOT ONE floor in the house is level. We took videos of a small cylinder about 6 inches long we let go at one end of each room; the cylinder rolled all the way across the room each time. Even the steps on the narrow, steep staircase were slanted. Placed on one side of a stair, the cylinder rolled across the step to the wall on the other side. 2) The beds were uncomfortably hard. They did not have any box springs, making it feel like sleeping on bumpy sand at the beach. 3) The TV had listings for hundreds of channels, yet basic, popular stations such as ESPN and CNN were unavailable, requiring a subscription that the owners evidently had not purchased. 4) The online photos of the living room/dining area were misleading, as they depicted a couple of armchairs in the middle of the room but no such chairs were there. In fact, the living/dining room combo included a dining room table with its dining chairs and a small couch in front of the TV, but no other places to sit in the large vacant space remaining. 5) The online photos also misrepresented the backyard. It doesn't exist. The area directly behind the cottage is the two-space parking area, paved in asphalt. It is not a useable backyard. The online photo that purports to be the backyard is actually the backyard of the cottage next door. A tall white fence separates it from this cottage's parking spots. 6) The bathroom is located directly in front of you once you ascend the staircase, but the floor from the top of the stairs to the bathroom door is slanted so you must walk UPHILL to enter the bathroom. The newer hardwood floor at the top of the stairs and that of the bedroom to the right of the bathroom appears to have been installed quite amateurishly. The ends of the floorboards abutting the bathroom threshold are unevenly cut. The floorboards at the entrance to that adjacent bedroom are so much higher than the floor outside it that the owner has affixed red tape to the floor to warn of the tripping hazard. 7) Cracks and peeling of ceiling sheetrock indicate it was likely installed by an unskilled do-it-yourselfer. In sum, this place is not safe--especially for the elderly--and significant online photo representations of its features are false.

The location and neighborhood were perfect. Note that all the beaches around the area are all private properties so they are not open to the public. There's just a tiny street leading to the bay with a bench. The house is nice. Bathrooms on the main level would have been appreciated. Heating in the sun room would have made it more usable in cold weather.
