About this cottage rental
Master bedroom has queen bed, second bedroom has a full bed, and the third bedroom is a sleeping porch with two twin beds. This cottage was one of three guest cottages that. along with her 'Bungalow', formed the estate of Ella Wheeler Wilcox. Frequent visitors to 'The Bungalow' were writers such as Jack London, who may have written Call of the Wild in this very cottage (or down the street in a local tavern). The floors are warped with age but the wood paneling is warm with the memories of the visitors who were drawn to this neighborhood for it became the site for many social gatherings that brought together literary and artistic figures of the day. Ella Wheeler Wilcox described this spot in her poem GRANITE BAY
At Granite Bay, such beauty lies,
In rocks, in waters and in skies,
As poets dream of Paradise.
The rocks that clasp fair Granite Bay
First saw her charms at break of day
And flushed to pink from somber gray.
To guard this bay from rude alarms
And shelter her from all that harms
Great trees reach out protecting arms.
Down to the very water's edge,
Between the granite rocks they wedge,
And watch in silence from each ledge.
Defending points and islands stand
And reefs of rocks run out from land,
To keep rude billows well in hand.
The river and the bay are friends;
One slender arm the river bends
And all her anchored boats defends.
So much one island loves her grace,
He fronts all dangers in his place,
To shield the beauty of her face.
Loved by the forest and the shore,
While sun and moon, and skies adore,
The strong rocks hold her evermore.
At Granite Bay the wild winds rest;
The sunlight is her welcome guest;
The moon goes mad upon her breast.
Not here is heard the sea gulls' scream.
They come, but only come to dream:
Far out at sea their sorrows seem.
At Granite Bay, far out at sea
My cares and troubles seem to me;
Love, joy and hope remain, these three.
Though forth my wandering footsteps stray,
To realms and regions far away,
My heart dwells here, in Granite Bay.
At Granite Bay, such beauty lies,

Cozy, relaxing and well equiped, our stay in this historic little cottage was just what we needed for our family while attending our son’s graduation.
Kathy is a great host and easy to communicate with.

Back in town
A wonderful cottage with history written all throughout. Beaches are a stones' throw away and you're surrounded by that typical New England shoreline.

Unsafe House and Misleading Listing
Several issues: 1) NOT ONE floor in the house is level. We took videos of a small cylinder about 6 inches long we let go at one end of each room; the cylinder rolled all the way across the room each time. Even the steps on the narrow, steep staircase were slanted. Placed on one side of a stair, the cylinder rolled across the step to the wall on the other side.
2) The beds were uncomfortably hard. They did not have any box springs, making it feel like sleeping on bumpy sand at the beach.
3) The TV had listings for hundreds of channels, yet basic, popular stations such as ESPN and CNN were unavailable, requiring a subscription that the owners evidently had not purchased.
4) The online photos of the living room/dining area were misleading, as they depicted a couple of armchairs in the middle of the room but no such chairs were there. In fact, the living/dining room combo included a dining room table with its dining chairs and a small couch in front of the TV, but no other places to sit in the large vacant space remaining.
5) The online photos also misrepresented the backyard. It doesn't exist. The area directly behind the cottage is the two-space parking area, paved in asphalt. It is not a useable backyard. The online photo that purports to be the backyard is actually the backyard of the cottage next door. A tall white fence separates it from this cottage's parking spots.
6) The bathroom is located directly in front of you once you ascend the staircase, but the floor from the top of the stairs to the bathroom door is slanted so you must walk UPHILL to enter the bathroom. The newer hardwood floor at the top of the stairs and that of the bedroom to the right of the bathroom appears to have been installed quite amateurishly. The ends of the floorboards abutting the bathroom threshold are unevenly cut. The floorboards at the entrance to that adjacent bedroom are so much higher than the floor outside it that the owner has affixed red tape to the floor to warn of the tripping hazard. 7) Cracks and peeling of ceiling sheetrock indicate it was likely installed by an unskilled do-it-yourselfer. In sum, this place is not safe--especially for the elderly--and significant online photo representations of its features are false.

Adorable beach cottage
The cottage, and the host, delivered in every respect. Would be happy to have a repeat stay.

Cute cottage
The location and neighborhood were perfect. Note that all the beaches around the area are all private properties so they are not open to the public. There's just a tiny street leading to the bay with a bench. The house is nice. Bathrooms on the main level would have been appreciated. Heating in the sun room would have made it more usable in cold weather.

Our first Air BNB experience in Branford
the experience was very good. I had hoped to be closer to a beach or waterfront, but it was ok. The property was excellent. The manager was excellent too, we just had communication problems relating to my cell service and previous email virus. Phone service was very sketchy, but that is no fault of the manager or owner.
Please advise me of how and when my deposit will be returned.
Thank you.

Enjoyable cottage stay along the shore
Our family of 4 enjoyed a few days along the shore at the cottage. The location is great, convenient to everything we were doing in Branford and only one house back from the water. It’s a short walk to the public access for Short Beach ( a small beach but perfect for morning walks).
The cottage seems to have many original features, which gives it a lot of great character. Weather was hot/humid and the AC worked great to keep the house cool and dry. Stairs are steep, altho no problem for our family. We did not cook during our stay, altho the kitchen appeared to be well stocked.
Communication with Kathy was prompt and very helpful/hospitable - thank you for sharing your home with us!! We would love to stay again when back in the area.

Perfect Getaway
This historic cottage was a great for a quiet getaway. Though not directly on the waterfront, there is a "beachy" feel to the community which embraces a slower pace.

New England Comfort
Our family had a great time exploring New Haven and Branford and it was enhanced by having a comfortable, well-kept cottage just a few steps from the water! Kathy's cottage has a New England feel and it had great history. The beds were very comfortable and our girls especially loved the pillows! We had everything we needed and Kathy was very easy to communicate with throughout the trip. We had a great time visiting Connecticut and the proximity of this cottage to everything that we wanted to do was perfect! No long drives and accessible to downtown, beaches, parks, and the Yale campus. Truly a memorable time for our family and we were happy to have been able to spend it in Kathy's cottage as our home away from home!

Lovely, peaceful getaway
Kathy was accommodating and responsive. Her cottage is clean and the AC worked well. The beach is v. close and our only suggestion to future renters would be to bring water shoes; the beach is rocky. Also, at high tide, there can be almost no beach but there is a larger beach a few blocks away. It's a beautiful spot!

Quaint and Quiet!
This was a great spot to have some much needed R&R with friends. Short beach is exactly how it sounds - short! But to enjoy relaxing days - the location was perfect! Plenty of room to spread out and they had thought of everything!
Would 100% rent again!

Graduation get together
Our family spent a week at this charming cottage for our daughter's graduation. We had a wonderful time! The one block walk to the beach afforded us the ability to go for walks at all hours of the day and night. We cooked numerous meals aat this cute cottage nd took advantage of the close proximity to Branford for shopping and a night. It was a great time!

Our host was the best along with the house.
Kathy met us at the house with all the information about the house that we needed. My wife and daughters loved it. It is the perfect beach house. She gave us a mug with a very famous line from one her poems. We forgot the mug. Kathy was perfect and so was the house.

Very clean, great location
The cottage was very clean and in great repair. Comfortable sheets, beds, etc. Well-stocked kitchen. Even though we arrived in 90+ weather the AC worked well and kept us cool. We were caught off-guard by the layout, though: The sleeping porch is a captive bedroom (you had to walk through the main bedroom to get to it). The sleeping porch does not have AC. If you have young kids, you may want a gate for the top of the stairs. The stairs are VERY steep, you don't want a kid wandering out there in the middle of the night.

Quaint comfortable cottage
Has the feel of a cabin. Ample space, nice kitchen, good internet speed. Beds are a bit too firm. Would stay here again.

Connecticut weekend getaway
Kathy was a fabulous host and very easy to communicate with. We stayed at her cabin for 3 nights while visiting friends and family in the area. This historic cottage was stocked with everything we needed for our stay. She even provided a few beach chairs and towels to use at the private beach located a stones throw from the house. Our kids enjoyed swimming at short beach and playing on the rock islands just a short swim from shore.

Fantastic beach cottage in great location!
My family just finished staying a week here at this cottage, and it was ideal for the 4 of us. It is just as pictured: cozy and comfortable, yet one block walk to the private beach. The neighborhood is filled with super friendly people who are happy to get to know you and chat as they walk their dogs. The sleeping arrangements worked out great, with a futon on the sleeping porch for one son, the bunk beds in a separate room for 2 other kids, and I had the master. There is only one bathroom and it is up a steep flight of stairs, but it is large and the shower is awesome. Also has super washer and dryer that we used a lot.
The beach is fairly small but so private-lots of days no one was there. Swimming was good, and the shoreline is lovely. Beach towels were provided, as well as a couple of chairs. Even though the property is small, we were able to entertain a party of 10 without difficulty. There is a great grocery store nearby-5 minute drive-and we were able to stock up on everything we needed. There is a small grill in the backyard which we used constantly. And there are several good lobster/seafood/burger restaurants that are a 10 minute drive and excellent.
The owner Kathy was available whenever we needed help. Even though she was super busy, when my son wanted an additional sports channel for a soccer match, she was able to get it for us on very short notice.
If you don't need too much space and love old historic beach cottages with slanting floors and lots of charm, I would definitely recommend this property.
