About this house rental
"Just give me the quiet to hear the waves breaking and the gulls laughing all day...."
That's an actual quote from a previous guest, and it describes the non-summer Strathmere experience perfectly. The light is gorgeous, the gulls are laughing, the beach is deserted, the town is silent and there's no waiting at the bar. (And the rates are cheap!) So why on earth do they call it the "off season?" The time is now to secure your desert-island experience in happy little Strathmere. Our peak summer/fall weeks rent quickly with regular return guests. So why not think about early spring, winter and late fall? With the sun still shining, the south deck is still a great spot for warm afternoon nap. The beach is all yours (perfect for running Fido and Rover). Put a pot roast on the stove, listen to the fireplace sizzle and watch those crazy kite surfers fly over the cold, roaring waves. Ah....time to think, read and per chance to dream....
During the pandemic we are leaving 24 hours between guests so we can take our time and deep clean. We wrapped the mattresses in plastic (like your grandmother's living room in South Philly), shrunk-wrapped the remotes, and we even sanitize the doorknobs and light switches. And we'd like everyone to bring their own bedding, per Cape May County Health Department guidelines. This is the perfect place to safely ponder the perplexing pandemic. And in the fall, Strathmere is a deserted island!
Here's why The Linden Cottage is so popular:
You're way up high on 13' pilings and the beach views are sweeping from every room. The sea breezes blow away any remaining thoughts of work and everyday stress and for a week or two you're relaxed in your own private Margaritaville. Upper and lower decks are perfect for lounging above the surf and watching the folks baking on the sand below. The open kitchen in the 'great room' is perfect for good cooking and casual entertaining. The house sleeps 8 quite comfortably and everyone nods off to the sound of the sea. No boardwalk, no honky-tonk, no beach tags. It's the Jersey shore the way the old-timers say it used to be, about 20 minutes south of Atlantic City. Walk everywhere in 'town,' to a couple of great BYOB's and one legendary speakeasy. Betcha dozen clams that if you come once you'll return again and again. Oh yeah, the pooch is welcome, too.
26 Sherman Avenue – 200 paces to the beach
Our house rewards those who enjoy great views and casual entertaining. The house sits high above the sea, with two large decks, upper and lower, offering wonderful beach and sunset views (and sunrise, too, for the early birds). The great room has a dining area that seats 8 and an open kitchen with an island that seats another 4. The living area has a large sofa and three reclining loungers. On the same floor is a large bedroom, with a king-size bed and full bath. Upstairs is another full bath, plus an open bedroom with a queen bed and large, comfortable queen-size futon. Also a mini-fridge. Walk through that room and find another bedroom with a queen bed. Each bedroom has access to the upper deck, which wraps around three sides of the house. Beach views are beautiful from every room. Children feel a particular affinity to the upstairs. It becomes 'theirs' rather quickly. Which leaves the great room and largest seaside deck for the grown-ups!
Our guests bring their own sheets and towels. The kitchen is well stocked in terms of cookware and appliances. We have a washer and dryer and there is central air that rarely gets used thanks to the wonderful ocean breezes. You'll probably want a light sweater in the evening, actually. And you may want to make sure you have a few flat-bottom coffee filters, laundry detergent and such. (We'll supply the septic-safe toilet paper.)
There is a tv with a dvd/vcr and wireless internet access. And we have a hot/cold outdoor shower, plus covered parking for up to 4 cars.
Our hidden secret on the Jersey shore
Our little town of Strathmere is on a small barrier island between Ocean City and Sea Isle City, NJ, about 25 minutes south of Atlantic City and 25 minutes north of Cape May. (An hour and 15 minutes from center city Philly.) There are no exit signs for it on the Garden State Parkway (heading south bound you take the second Ocean City exit to get here), which helps to keep us a bit of a secret. This is a hamlet of old fishing cottages, many of which have recently been turned into larger, contemporary homes, but the place still feels old world compared to the shore towns that have become row after row of condos and triplexes.
In Strathmere there are two BYOBs, a funky luncheonette (say hey to Steph and Alex), a pancake house and two bayside bars, including the legendary Twisties, a tiny speakeasy unchanged from the '30s. Only two blocks wide - you're either on the bayside or on a beach block - you can walk or bike to everything here. The mail does not get delivered, so everyone meets eventually at our small post office.
There are supermarkets and ordinary shopping districts in both Sea Isle and Ocean City, each about 4 miles from the heart of Strathmere. There are boardwalks and the usual seashore arcades in both towns, with a bustling amusement pier at the north end of Ocean City. In Strathmere, we have only the dunes and a wide beach, free to the public (no tags!) and it's wonderfully uncrowded in comparison to our neighboring burgs. Strathmere is a quiet, family friendly town that rewards lovers of peace, calm and at the right times, solitude.
You can see more photos of Strathmere and its unique environs at a great website run by one of the locals. Just google Strathmere, as we're not allowed to post another website here.
And you can see a live feed of the beach view from our own webcam next door. Just google Strathmere webcam and you'll find it. (The surfers love it.)

Great house just 600’ from the beach. Awesome views and deck. The house has an eclectic mix of art and local artifacts throughout. Ed is a wonderful host who puts a positive spin and or a splash of humor on everything.

Cook, relax, sip, dance. Oh, and the beach is, like, right in front of your nose.

The minute you enter the house you know you're in for a unique beach experience. Incredible views from every room and all the decks make you want to get up for the sunrise. The beach stretches for miles, that allowed our lab (Salina) to romp and follow her nose to her heart's content. The house has everything you need to make a wide variety of meals and spend hours hanging out despite the weather. There was a snowstorm while we were there and this made walking the beach an invigorating event. Ed stopped by and was a great host providing us with a ton of information on the local scene. We'll be back.

My husband and I booked this cottage the week after Thanksgiving and had a wonderful week walking the beach. The weather was still nice and we basically had the beach to ourselves. Ed and Lyn are great hosts and the house is set up like your home away from home. We cooked many great meals in the well stocked kitchen while listening to the extensive CD collection. Can’t wait to go back next year!

Our second vacation here was as great as the first! Linden Cottage has the perfect beach house vibe all over, and owners Ed & Lyn could not be more hospitable. The family is already looking forward to next year!

This was our second vacation at Linden Cottage in 2018, and both stays were just wonderful. Our first visit in March just happened to coincide with a nor’easter that blew up the East Coast. Although the winds were howling and the snow was blowing outdoors, we were warm and cozy indoors next to the gas stove. The beach looked so beautiful buried under a blanket of snow and we enjoyed watching the wild surf. There were very few folks around, so we pretty much had the beach to ourselves. We’ve just returned from our second stay and had just as much fun as the first time. Although the weather in the early part of the week was a bit wet, the week finished strong with abundant sunshine and we spent lots of time sitting on the beach and up on the house deck. Strathmere is a quaint little town and there are a number of restaurants, all within walking distance. The home has pretty much everything you need (except linens) and the owners are a pleasure to deal with. With its open floor plan and walls of windows, it’s a super place to gather with family and friends in any season. We love the fun, kitschy decor (it’s always 5 o’clock there) and the vast collection of interesting books and music cds. The best part is that the home is pet-friendly, so we were able to include our spoiled-rotten BFF in our vacation plans. We definitely plan to return in 2019! Thanks, Ed and Lyn!

Clean, beautiful, spacious and overall awesome!!
The owner, Ed, had great correspondence timing and was very helpful. We loved that the charm of the home included books, music & a very well stocked kitchen. We are so thankful for the experience of not only being able to afford the rental, but it was located within a 2-3 hour driving distance from all of the sites we wished to visit while there on vacation.
We live in Florida and we were able to see NYC, Cape May (to watch whales & dolphins play out in the Atlantic), Philadelphia, Amish Country, Washington D.C., Atlantic City as well as the quiet (this time of year) town of Strathmere. With the affordability of Linden Cottage, we were able to do so much and make wonderful memories for our 5 kids that they'll never forget and always cherish.
Our pup Raylen even enjoyed his stay.
This was by far our favorite vacation yet. Thanks, Ed, for helping us be able to mark several things off of our "Bucket Lists".
Hope to come back someday and just spend the actual week at the beach house and rest up. We were on the go so much that I feel we need a vacation in bed for a week now LOL.
AWESOME LOCATION!!! Loved the sunrises!! Cheers

We have just returned home from a one week, off season stay at Linden Cottage. The rental home is so comfortable and clean. The ocean views from every angle are a plus. Part of my week was spent with friends; the remainder with family as we celebrated our daughter's birthday. It was perfect for both groups. Ed was supportive - there was a Nor'easter that hit points N and NW - Strathmere experienced only heavy winds and rain, but there was no question about being able to be there through the storm action even tho it turned out to be relatively tame. We truly enjoyed looking out at the tall, strong waves during the storm. And we enjoyed walking the beach. The kitchen is equipped - I can't think of one kitchen tool or appliance that was missing! The property is pet friendly - it was so nice to take our dog. The location is perfect! We look forward to returning. I must say that Ed gets five stars for VRBO ownership - from beginning to end he was responsive and available for any questions. We look forward to returning to this "Strathmere Diamond."

Spouse and I and our two dogs have been staying here for a few years now for the winter solstice through the new year. Going back this off-season for a February week also. I've never been a fan of blazing hot sun and bodies lying all over the beach - just give me the quiet to hear the waves breaking and gulls calling all day long. The beach access is right in front of you and dogs are allowed to go walking on the beach with you in the off-season. For the birders, there are world class wetland and beach trails all less than 30 minutes away - Cape May to the south, Forsythe Wildlife Refuge to the north, Belleplain Forest to the west, and lots of local walks closer to home. The house itself has lots of open space and everything we need. We cook a lot because the kitchen is equipped, but also because it's fun to cook and gaze at the ocean! Evenings are wonderful with wireless internet, sound system, television, books, puzzles, and cast iron gas fireplace.

Loved this home for our recent week of fishing and relaxation at the Jersey Shore. The views are wonderful from everywhere, inside and out. Home is open, spacious, and fully equipped for cooking, reading, and relaxing. You're just a short walk away from the sand and surf. And, our dog Kasey didn't have to be left out as the property is pet friendly. Dealing with the homeowner was smooth sailing all the way. Quick to respond and quite accommodating as well. Didn't take us long at all to decide we'll be back and we are looking forward to our return trip next fall.

Truly enjoyed this location and house. The views and sounds of the water from the house are wonderful. The beach is easily accessible. The house was very comfortable. Quite enjoyed the long window seat. Perfect place to sit, read, and gaze out on the beach when it was cold or rainy. Kitchen is outfitted with lots of pots and utensils, and room! Had plenty of tools at our disposal to cook up a yummy meal or two. If you go during the offseason be prepared for a lack of dining choices, particularly during the week and in Strathmere. There are places to be found in Sea Isle and Ocean City but they aren't plentiful.
It was a quiet getaway for us and I can see it being a great option for a larger group during peak season. Enjoyed some of the personal touches including the the CD collection and variety of books. I wouldn't hesitate to go back and I'd recommend this to anyone.
From A to Z, the owner was extremely responsive and thorough with communications.

What a wonderful cottage! My wife, son, german shepherd and I had a wonderful time at Linden Cottage. The house was spacious, cozy, had wonderful views, was within close walking distance to the beach and provided a manageable (15 minute) car/ bike ride to both Ocean City and Sea Isle City. In addition, my personal dealings with the property owner were wonderful! I highly recommend this property to anyone who needs some R&R in a quiet and beautiful setting. The house was fully ready for all our needs including a fully stocked kitchen, two beautiful bathrooms, a plethora of sleeping arrangements along with beautiful decks with ocean views on both the first and second floors.
