About this farm stay rental
Enjoy a private and beautifully renovated artists' farmhouse in the heart of the farmcoast region, across from the Slocum River Reserve. Close to beaches, restaurants, museums, wineries, galleries, bicycling, water sports, state parks and reserves.
This vintage two story 1920's farmhouse was completely renovated in 2014/15 by ceramist Chris Gustin and his wife, painter and sculptor Nancy Train Smith. It is a showcase for the 'handmade'. The tile, ceramics and artwork in the house were made by both local and national artists. My tile studio made all of the ceramic tile in the house, with floors, kitchen, laundry, wood stove area and bathrooms outfitted in beautiful handmade tile. The stoneware dinnerware is from Guadalajara, Mexico. All in all, the house welcomes you to enjoy the beauty of living with handmade objects.
The house is located on three acres of land, which is next door/adjacent to my ceramics studio, gallery and wood burning kiln. It has four bedrooms, three with queen beds and one with a double bed. Three bedrooms are upstairs, one is downstairs. There are two full baths with beautiful walk-in handmade tiled shower stalls, one upstairs and one downstairs.
The downstairs is very open, with kitchen, living room and dining area all open to each other. A large outdoor deck area with grill is off of the back entrance and kitchen, and will have a fire pit in 2016. Landscaping and a new garden are being completed in the spring of 2016, so fresh vegetables and herbs will be available for guests in the summer of 2016.
The kitchen has all new appliances, with stone countertops and beautiful tile backsplash and cabinetry. It is fully equipped, with pots, pans and a full assortment of dishes and glassware. We provide a small pantry of the staples needed for cooking. There is an expresso coffee maker, as well as the traditional drip maker and Keurig. Enjoy your meals on handmade stoneware dinnerware from Mexico in the dining area that sits eight. With a new Jotul wood stove, fall, winter and spring visits have the extra warmth of a wood fire on cold days and nights.
Interaction with Guests
My ceramics studio is located next door to the farmhouse, along with my gallery and wood kiln. I'm usually there most days, and guests are welcome to visit and tour the studios and gallery. I'm available if interested, and will support your privacy if desired!
The Neighborhood
Our neighborhood is located in a rural area on the west bank of the Slocum's River. The house is next door to a 100 acre farm that grows the shrub and tree stock for Sylvan Nurseries, a horticulturalist's dream, located a couple of miles down the road. The house is across the road from the Slocum's River Reserve, a 100 acres nature preserve on the banks of the Slocum's River, sporting walking trails and views that are stunning. The house is a short 7 mile drive to New Bedford, with the Whaling Museum, Art Museum, National Park and restaurants. We are 3 miles from Padanarum Village to the east, and 4 miles to the Westport and Horseneck Beach area. A short drive will get you to beaches, restaurants, museums, wineries, galleries, water sports, fishing, state parks and nature reserves.
With miles of country roads bordering farmlands, vineyards and the ocean, the house is perfectly suited for those interested in bicycling.
Local favorite restaurants include the Bayside Restaurant and the Back Eddy, located in Westport, and the Little Moss and Black Bass in Padanarum Village. Both Cork and the Spicy Lime are great eats in New Bedford.

I wish we had booked a longer stay so we could have an enjoyed an evening on the patio with the grill and firepit! The house was impeccably clean and thoughtfully furnished with everything we needed during our stay; including a fun and eclectic CD collection. Centrally located, the house offers easy access to Padanaram, Westport and Tiverton. Thank you, Chris!

A lovely stay with dear friends (scattered around the US and world) from our Antioch Art Dept days in the 70’s. Our second stay in this delightful place. As we are still all artists of various media (written word, film, visual) the artistic, rich details of this well-appointed house were admired & much appreciated. Lovely grounds, landscaping outdoor patio etc. Great communication with the host. Thank you Chris! With warm gratitude- Linda and crew.

We had such a relaxing stay at this lovely farmhouse, set in a quiet location back from the road, and minutes from the beach. The house is up-to-date and charmingly decorated, with a kitchen equipped with everything needed to prepare a full meal. The patio, deck, and outdoor shower were perfect for after-beach hanging out. Chris and Nancy were very friendly and helpful. Lots of things to do and see in the area — plus fresh produce to be had a the farm stands all about. We will be back!

The Farmhouse is beautifully decorated with an ecclectic mix of new and old pieces, perfectly mirroring the modern updates. It was the perfect relaxing atmosphere for our women's weekend! The hosts were very gracious and accommodating.

This is a tastefully renovated and modernized old farmhouse near Demarest Lloyd and Horseneck beaches and coastal nature preserves. The former farm sheds have been made into a ceramic arts studio and display gallery by the hosts. The location is certainly rural -- a herd of deer were nibbling the foliage one morning outside the living-room window.
The house is spacious, clean and comfortable, the only downside being that it presents challenges to persons with limited mobility (steep spiral stairs to upper level and some step-ups or step-downs between rooms. Fortunately, one bedroom is on the main floor level.

I stayed here last week and overall had a positive experience. However I was charged $200 extra for having 6 people total. The listing says $50 per extra person per night but it also says it sleeps 8. I’m still unclear why I was charged. If it’s possible to get this back that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Beautiful setting and wonderful house
A great location with a lot of open space and farmland and just minutes to the beach, and the Slocum river for paddling. The house is exactly as described, perfectly clean and spacious. It really is like staying in a pottery museum - the dishes are almost too beautiful to eat on!

Couldn’t ask for more
This property was both beautiful and perfect. We stayed here with other family members for our son’s wedding. Chris was extremely helpful and responsive. The home was very clean and ready for us. We had a wonderful time. Beds were very comfortable. The kitchen was well appointed and the pottery beautiful. We only wish we had time visit Chris’s studio. Amazing how time flies. We were close to shopping and the beach. With 4 bedrooms and a beautiful property is was absolutely perfect.
Next time we need a large home in the area we would not hesitate to rebook with Chris.

Great relaxing getaway
My spouse and I recently stayed at Chris's lovely property and had a relaxing time. We spent our time split between relaxing in the very comfortable living room and outdoor area and exploring the local area. It was a great home base for our getaway. The bedrooms were clean and spacious, as was the rest of the home. The kitchen was new and well appointed, and allowed us to easily make any meal we wanted to. The wifi was strong enough for my husband to get some work done. Chris was a very responsive and helpful host and made us feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend to others!

Great country location!
The farmhouse was very comfortable for my family and friends. We enjoyed cooking great meals in the large kitchen and eating them on the cool pottery plates. The back patio with fire pit was an awesome way to sit together viewing the night sky and talking about our day’s experiences. The showers were wonderful and the beds very comfortable. I would definitely recommend anyone to stay here!

Wonderful summer rental
What can I add to all the great things that have been said before? My family has stayed several times and will again next summer. Chris is always helpful. My daughter needed a printer and Chris brought one right to the house! The house has high ceilings and wonderful light and air throughout. Well designed kitchen and laundry room. Strong wifi - no worries. Central air-conditioning is perfect on hot summer days. Entertaining is easy with the large stone patio and fire pit. Large outside table and oversized shade umbrella make eating outside so pleasant. New this year is an outdoor shower. We love to walk/jog the 3.5 mile trail (Slocum River Preserve and Dartmoor WMA) accessible right from the house. Great birding from the back deck - ospreys fly over frequently. This year we heard an Eastern Screech Owl calling while we were eating dinner. Nearby Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary or Gooseberry Neck are wonderful spots for hiking or wildlife viewing. Horseneck Beach is one of the best beaches and just a few minutes away. Westport Lobster Co has fresh striped bass, swordfish and many other seafood goodies. Good day trips: Whaling Museum in New Bedford - the entire Whaling National Historical Park is a gem - the best of its kind. Also take the ferry to Cuttyhunk, or visit the Newport Cliff Walk and mansions. We have stayed in many rentals over the years and this is my family’s favorite by far.

Farmhouse in Dartmouth
We've stayed twice this summer at this wonderful farmhouse in Dartmouth. Not much to add to earlier, longer reviews. Both stays were enjoyable and relaxing. The house just keeps getting better, with improvements like the outdoor shower and a new kitchen faucet. Chris and Nancy were welcoming and thoughtful as always. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Dartmouth farmhouse
We've stayed at this fabulous property for three years. New this year: a glorious outdoor shower, next to a thriving garden, to complement the two beautiful full baths inside the farmhouse. The house is plenty big and well equipped for up to 8 people, with lovely decoration and artwork by Chris and Nancy and with a spacious patio, deck, and fire pit for outdoor entertaining. The central air conditioning and ceiling fans make it comfortable in the hottest weather. Chris and Nancy are the most responsive, engaging hosts. And, yes, the house is meticulously clean. We will keep coming back to this terrific spot.

This was our second stay at the Farmhouse and we look forward to returning to this beautiful, thoughtfully designed, well-equipped and well-maintained house in one of the dreamiest landscapes we've ever seen. All three generations of our family, from 2- 75, loved visiting here and can't wait to come back.

Great spot in Dartmouth, MA
The house has all you need: beautiful outdoor spaces, including fire pit; proximity to all the "south shore" of Mass. has to offer (beaches, nature preserves, restaurants); books/CD's/TV (you need your own app); very nicely equipped kitchen and a perfect host. A VERY interesting ceramics studio/manufactory abuts the property. In perfect shape and nicely furnished.

Hand-Made Luxury
This was the perfect place for us to gather with our two grown children after 3 months of strict quarantine. The house was spotless, well-supplied, and beautifully furnished. It has been artistically renovated to offer every amenity while retaining its farmhouse charm. We loved sampling the CD's and could watch movies on the Fire TV using our streaming subscriptions. Beautiful setting among working farms, and just a mile to the boat landing (lovely kayaking on the Slocum River) and a few scenic miles to Horseneck Beach. We biked , swam, strolled through pastures, grilled and ate our dinners on the spacious deck (not a mosquito in sight), and visited around the fire pit. Two Adirondack chairs on the front porch provided a spot to have our morning coffee or enjoy the nightly firefly show. We did not get to tour Chris's studio, apparently a mecca for ceramic artists, but hope to next time. We definitely want to return!

Wonderful
This restful, lovely artists' house could not have been more perfect for our family of four. The space is ample and well arranged for privacy. The house is nicely sited, and furnished and maintained with care, taste and affection. We loved being surrounded by Chris and Nancy's curated collection of art, ceramics and textiles.
The ceiling fans, AC, chef's kitchen, indoor-outdoor deck, firepit, generous deck and shaded outdoor eating area were also much appreciated. Nearby hikes were lovely.
We came away refreshed and relaxed, and looking forward to our next visit.
