About this apartment rental
vrKCV - Hale Pohaku 1, Professionally Managed by Kona Coast Vacations
Welcome to paradise and to our 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1161 sq. ft. condo located at Hale Pohaku.
The large 25' lanai puts you incredibly close to the water. You'll love the oceanfront dining and relaxing, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner while watching the dolphins, sea turtles and fish dance in the waves plus see the whales during season. The lanai is fully covered, with a Hunter ceiling fan for your comfort, and is your own private place to see the incredible Kona sunsets.
The sliding glass doors and screens in the living room slide back entirely into pockets, opening up the living room and kitchen to the lanai and oceanfront experience. The lanai overhangs the pool and you have an unobstructed view of the reef, bay, beautiful sunsets and sandy beach.
Hale Pohaku was designed by award winning Hawaii architect Vladimir Ossipoff, called the “master of modern Hawaiian architecture”. It shares no common walls with other units, allowing flow through ventilation from the floor-to-ceiling louvers in every room. His unique design incorporates Kamaaina (local) style. The cool ocean breezes bring in the fresh air and are complimented by Hunter ceiling fans in each room, even the kitchen and master bathroom. The complex feels very private with only 6 units sharing the oceanfront pool and covered parking. The pool is light salt, eliminating the need for chlorine and feels much better on your suntanned skin.
Inside our condo, you'll find granite countertops, Koa cabinets and fresh, contemporary bathrooms. The furniture and cal-king size beds in both the master bedroom and second bedroom are custom crafted by a local artist and features the Honu (turtle) carved in the wood. The unit is fully stocked with linens and towels, and the kitchen has top end appliances and everything you need to prepare meals featuring local produce from the nearby farmers markets. In the living room, you'll find a 49” full HD TV, and audio system.
Location, location, location! The location is unique with a small white sand beach just steps away and your own private seawall gate to get there. Beyond the beach, there is a nice size wading area surrounded by lava and a coral reef. You could spend hours here in the water exploring or on the sand sun bathing. If you have children, they will love it when the turtles come over to the shore to visit. They are very curious and amazing to watch up close. And you'll find other great beaches and surf spots close by. Finally, the oceanfront pool has plenty of patio furniture, shaded section and a grassy area for sunbathing, plus its own bathroom and shower. These are a few of the many reasons Hawaiian royalty picked Kona as their home!
We are close enough to town to walk (about a mile and a half), with lots of scenery to see along the way. You can head to town in the morning to have breakfast and then walk it off on the way back to the condo, followed by a swim to cool off. You can also hop on the Kona-Keauhou trolley as a stop is only a block away. The open air Alii Gardens Marketplace is about ¼ mile away, with local crafts, coffee and foods.
During the Kona Ironman in October, Hale Pohaku puts you right in the action as the triathletes train on Ali'i Drive. During the race, the athletes run south on Ali'i Drive, passing right by Hale Pohaku on their way to Keauhou. There they turn and head north again on Ali'i, passing Hale Pohaku a second time as they compete in the final leg of the Triathlon. Just set up your beach chair and cheer them on for the final leg of the Kona Ironman.
The condo is located on a busy road and from the unit you will hear traffic noise from certain parts of the unit.
We hope that you enjoy our new oceanfront paradise as much as we do!
Minimum night varies seasonally between 4 - 10 nights. This is a no pets, no smoking property.

Loved the beautiful condo with breathtaking ocean views, comfortable beds, and well-equipped kitchen. Spent memorable moments on the lanai watching sunsets. Absolutely awesome!

This unit is very clean and well decorated and well stocked kitchen with every type of necessity. The patio is superb as is the view to the west and the sunsets. Being a first floor unit with the pool at the ground level below, still had this patio above those walking to the small beaches and it felt very secure. I would suggest later into April or May if looking for warmer sunshine!

The ocean view from this deck is above and beyond one's expectations. Everything from jumping fish, leaping whales, pounding waves, lava rock walks, small sandy beach and the most gorgrous sunsets are included.

Beautiful condo in a small building. Very well appointed in furnishings and kitchen needs, management company is excellent. The only down side is that the location is VERY noisy. The condo is literally on the Ocean and the waves are LOUD, but you get used to that and it lulls you to sleep. HOWEVER, the bedroom is on the rear of the building and is on Ali’i Drive and the traffic noise was horrible. Many very loud revving engines and extremely loud music from cars going by. We had to purchase ear plugs in order to sleep. This traffic noise occurred about 4 nights out of the seven we were there.

This is an awesome two bedroom condo. We spent hours on the spacious lanai looking at the waves and sunsets. The kitchen is well stocked. The beds are comfortable. The location is great - close to beaches and town. Wonderful.

We loved everything about this beautiful place. The lanai was our favorite place to sit and take it all in. We watched whales, spouting, spinner, dolphins, surfers, the sound of the powerful waves, and amazing sunsets. The ocean breeze kept the house. Very cool uncomfortable. The house was well equipped with everything you would need. 🌺🌴🐠🌅🌊

It took a night or two to get used to the crashing of waves, but that’s the price of a beach front property. Spent a lot of time on the lanai basking in the view!

Great location. Spacious and comfortable. Good sized lanai to sit and relax or eat while enjoying the view. Can enjoy the sound of the ocean from everywhere in the house. No A/C. Adequately cooled by fans and windows while we were there in early November, but I think has potential to get warm at times.

Where do I even begin with the view and location? This was beyond what we had hoped for. We loved and savored every moment. Plan to come back!

The moment we stepped into the Hale Pohaku, we were amazed! Our first impression of the condo was that it was even more beautiful in person, and we immediately felt at home. The condo and the property as a whole are well maintained. Hale Pohaku is spacious, comfortable, and offers all the amenities, and more. As we made our meals and dined on the lanai at sunset, we enjoyed the sounds of the ocean and the most amazing sunsets. Hale Pohaku is a place we have fond memories of, and we are looking forward to returning for our next holiday.
In closing, I would like to THANK the team at Kona Coast Vacations for the excellent communication and partnership, both during our holiday planning and throughout our stay. Warmest aloha!

A wonderful balcony overlooking breaking waves and a small pool below our balcony. The bedroom closest to Alii Dr. was very noisy particularly because of the early morning traffic.

This property is just as pictured, and sunsets from the lanai couldn’t be best. Very comfortable for 4 adults, everything we needed and more. Comfortable, clean and convenient location.

Great unit for 2 couples traveling together. Amazing views from the Lanai. Kitchen is well equipped. No A/C, but the louver system works well at keeping the temperature comfortable.

This property was exactly as advertised , except the pool was better than we expected. You have the ocean you can jump and then back to the pool. No crowds to deal with. Perfect stay for the wife and I.

We really enjoyed the view and location of this condo but that was all. The louver design let in all sorts of noise, we needed ear plugs to sleep. Some of the louvers were broken and couldn’t be fully closed. This was also not your home away from home feel that we enjoy from using short term rentals over hotels.

We really enjoyed our stay here, as the property was very welcoming and quiet during our entire stay. The ocean breeze helped cool the very spacious condo well and the pool and beach side property was a huge hit.

Kona 2022
The view and location can not be beat. The lanai overlooking the water was amazing. Easy access to town and short drive to marina for snorkeling outings. Clean upon arrival, off street parking. House well supplied with extras like beach towels, chairs, pool noodles. Property manager checked in frequently to make sure we had everything we needed.

Perfect sunset
This was a great place in a good location. You definitely need a car to get around, but there are a few places to walk to within a half mile. A little dated but a large balcony for enjoying a gorgeous sunset!

Excellent Location with Stunning Views
Excellent value for the price. 3 story building with 6 units. We were on the 1st floor but you’re elevated above the pool so there’s no worries about open windows at night if you’re traveling alone. It’s very safe. We stayed for a week and thoroughly enjoyed the property. The building is older but our unit was modern and very clean. Mgmt company is very responsive. I will stay here again.

Take me back!
Overall, this was a great unit for our stay. The lanai is to die for, I could have spent my whole time out there! We appreciated all of the furniture on the lanai and the beach related items like masks, umbrellas, etc. The bedrooms are very spacious and comfortable with a lot of storage options. If you don't mind walking, there are a few things we enjoyed nearby that we walked to such as Da Poke Shack and the Marketplace. Kailua is less than a 10 minute drive away and we also utilized Uber a few times; one-way fare costed less than $10.
Not necessarily a con, but if you are a light sleeper, this may not be the best unit for you as most of the "walls" are actually window panels so you can hear people walking by and the street traffic pretty clearly in the mornings. I had ear plugs with me which solved that problem but it still took a day or so to get used to as it sometimes sounds like there is someone in the unit when in fact it is just someone talking outside.
And one tip: the shower in the master bathroom takes a solid few minutes to heat up. There is a sign with some instructions for the water heater in the guest bedroom that was discovered too late but apparently said instructions work for both showers so make sure to read that sign sooner rather than later - unless you enjoy a cold shower.
We hope to return!!

Perfect vacation spot!
This property looks and is exactly as described on the VRBO website. This is definitely the nicest property that my husband and I have ever stayed at. Right on the beach so you can hear the waves crashing as you sit on the porch. Will 1000% be coming back here next time we stay on the Big Island. This property is just beautiful and that doesn't even do it justice!

All of us were very excited to stay at this place to begin with, and it still exceeded expectations. As our first trip to the Big Island, it was a perfect location, about 5 min drive south of the main Kona strip. The unit is located on the first floor without any stairs needed for access. There’s an amazing view from the lanai, and the pocketed sliding doors are perfect. We kept them open the whole time pretty much and the place felt great. The far bedroom (street side) is the one with the en suite bathroom, otherwise they both have king size beds and ample room. We weren’t bothered by the reported street noise, it kinda blends in with the crashing waves honestly. The kitchen is equipped with all the tools you’ll likely need. The place seems to be cleaned out of anything remotely perishable so be prepared for potentially getting things like salt/pepper, condiments, etc. The complex is quite with only 6 units. Pool was very nice and we always had it to ourselves whenever we went (just down one flight of stairs from your side private entrance). Beach access is mainly to a good collection of tide pools. There is a small sandy area to lay out if you’d like but probably not the best place to enter the water. I’d definitely recommend this place and if we come back to the BI, we’d likely stay here again.

Great for Two Couples
Beautiful Ocean Front. Lanai door opens across entire front of the unit. Two 'Master' BRs. Kitchen and laundry room were well equipped with modern appliances. Easy covered parking.
The larger Master BR was a little noisy and had fumes from street traffic. (1 out of 4 of us noticed this.). There is no BBQ. The gate to the ocean was not functional. (We just hopped over the wall. I understand that there is ocean access next door.). We saw two green sea turtles right in front on our first morning there. Great Condo!

Very Noisy
The property is very dated. The second bedroom has sliding louvered doors that can not be locked, so no privacy at all. The windows are only slatted windows and allow all the noise from the next door neighbors and street in.
We had the washing machine fail, and the dishwasher fail, and the property manager was very prompt to attend to both issues, but still it is just another demonstration of how dated the property is.

I enjoyed staying at this condo with amazing wave action very close

Nice ocean view but.......
The living room furniture is sub standard but the Bed was comfortable. Quite a bit of road noise but that’s normal on Ali’i drive. Not very well equipped but when I called the property manager they sent over the items that were missing. Like dish towels, sponge and DW soap pods.
I would return but might scope out for a better property at these prices.

Delightful getaway
We had a great experience here. The property was an excellent fit for our small family, and our favorite part was the lanai. We appreciated the host’s recommendations for activities; we booked the snorkeling tour David suggested and had an excellent time. Thank you!
