For more than 100 years, visitors have found their way to the White Mountains of New Hampshire for their beauty, grandeur, and recreational qualities. Now, the area known as the Western White Mountains (Lincoln, Woodstock, Franconia) has become the base camp for tourists, adventure seekers, and a ton of outdoor fun.

GET OUTSIDE

The first rule in enjoying the White Mountains on land, is “Get Outside.” The mountains offer so many great experiences outside, that you would never be able to do it all.

SPRING

The locals call March and April, spring skiing season or even “mud” season which sometimes extends into May. This time of year is great for snowsports because the weather is generally exceptional, with warmer days and cooler nights. Get outside and go for that snowshoe hike on the RiverWalk trail or one of the various walks on the Kancamagus Scenic Highway.

SUMMER

Adventure abounds in the summer season, which starts on Memorial Day Weekend and extends through labor day. The most enjoyed activity in the White Mountains in the summer is hiking. The Western White Mountains are defined by the area comprising the western slope of the Presidential Range, which also includes the Franconia Range. There are summit hikes that would take the day to complete, but offer some of the most amazing views in the country. Waterfalls, scenic vistas, dense forest, and wildlife (moose, bear, eagles, bobcats, etc.) are a big part of the adventure. To take it a step further, more experienced mountaineers trek the Appalachian Trail which traverses the high peaks in the Western White Mountains. Rock climbing, ATV Riding, Mountain Biking, and even spelunking (cave exploring) are common adventures in the White Mountains.

FALL

If you love land adventures in the summer, you’ll love them even more in Autumn. Droves of people come to the White Mountains from around the world to see the fall foliage in all its glory. This makes for the most amazing backdrop for outdoor adventures. There’s nothing quite like the view from atop Cannon Mountain, looking into Franconia Notch when the leaves are bright orange and red. Or, finding Lost River while the leaves are changing, is a memory you won’t soon forget. One of the most traveled and famous scenic byways in America is the Kancamagus highway. Both sides of this storied route are covered in adventurous hikes that could take you a lifetime to conquer.

At the center of all the adventure is RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain. Located in the center of town, RiverWalk is the most convenient home base camp for White Mountains Adventures. For more great information on land adventures in the Lincoln, Woodstock, and Franconia Notch area, visit the Western White Mountains Chamber of Commerce.

The bird’s eye view of RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain is exceptional to say the least. And, there are a number of aerial adventures in the White Mountains that provide the excitement and the view at the same time. Soar among the treetops, ride the tram, climb the fire tower, and summit the highest peaks in the Northeast.

ZIPLINES

The excitement builds as you gear up for your first zipline tour at one of 2 zipline adventure courses in the Western White Mountains. Next, your heart starts to race as you climb the trees to the platform for your first jump. Then, pure adrenaline kicks in as you go weightless for a moment speed through the trees and over the river. Last, your face hurts from smiling and your throat is sore from screaming with excitement. Sound fun? It most certainly is, and there are multiple ways to get some for yourself. Alpine Adventures is the #1 rated zipline course in New England was one of the first zipline courses to start the trend across the world. Loon Mountain Resort has added a new zipline attraction as part of their adventure center, zipping across the Pemigewasset River (same river as RiverWak).

AERIAL CHALLENGE COURSES

Also at Alpine Adventures on Main Street in Lincoln, NH is the exciting and challenging, Thrillsville Aerial Adventure Park. Climb the ropes, take a freefall plunge, scale the climbing walls, and test your gall on the big air bag. Over at Loon Mountain, the Aerial Forest will challenge your strength, speed, balance and wit, as you make your way through this unique adventure course.

TRAMS AND GONDOLAS

One of the best ways to see the mountains is from the 30-passenger tram at Cannon Mountain and aboard the longest gondola skyride at Loon Mountain. Both of these high-wire tours are used in winter to bring skiers up the mountain. But, the rest of the year, adventure seekers take to the skies to summit their respective peaks. The views are amazing.

FIRE TOWERS

Many of NH’s highest peaks with 360° views have fire towers that served as fire safety lookouts for the White Mountains. Today, many of these towers serve as a perches for adventure seekers looking to get the best views. Lincoln, NH is home to 2 towers that are worth climbs; at the summit of Loon Mountain there is a fire tower that gives impressive views of the entire White Mountains with one of the best views of Mount Washington on a clear day. At Indian Head Resort you can climb the tower to get one of the best views of Mt. Pemigewasset (Indian Head) which is a profile of the famed Indian chief with the same name.

Adventure on and in the water in the White Mountains is everywhere. Natural attractions, like the rivers, waterfalls, basins, swimming holes, lakes, ponds, and streams all offer great family adventures. There’s also man-made adventures like waterparks, pools, and even water blaster boats.

RIVERS

It wouldn’t be called RiverWalk resort, if not for the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River that borders the resort. This river is a magnet for river adventures, including kayaking, tubing, fishing and swimming. The river is swift in most locations, giving great appeal to those seeking white water. But, the eddies along the river make some of the coolest swimming holes in the White Mountains. All along the shores, you’ll find fishermen and women catching and releasing native and stocked trout.

LAKES

High Mountain lakes are pristine with their stream or spring fed sources of clear water. Some lakes like Loon Lake and Lonesome Lake will require a hike to get you to their shores. While others, like echo lake and profile lake are drivable and accessible. Take your kayak, your fishing gear, and your swimsuit to take full advantage in the summer. In the winter… just bring your skates and tip-ups.

MOUNTAIN STREAMS & WATERFALLS

The White Mountains are defined by their streams, many of which carved out the valleys that give them their names. Wherever you hike, you’ll come across, and have to cross, many of the streams that feed down the slopes into the rivers at the valley floor. Many of these streams lead to waterfalls and cascades, like the Cascade Brook Trail and the Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park. Or try the Sabbaday Falls along the Kancamagus Highway. For a good list of the Waterfalls in the White Mountains, check out the White Mountains Attractions waterfalls page.

WATERPARKS & POOLS

The pools at RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain are luxurious to say the least, and state of the art to say even more. Starting inside, flowing outside, and converting to ice skating in winter, the RiverWalk pools are amazing. For more adventure, try out the Whales Tale Waterpark in Lincoln. This growing family-favorite attraction has some of the most adventurous rides and thrills in and out of the water. Another crazy water adventure is the Water Blaster Boats attraction at Clark’s Trading Post.
