About this house rental
Come experience the Freedom of the Hills. You'll love staying in this charming and quaint home. Enjoy being nestled in the mountains, yet conveniently close to both Crested Butte and Gunnison. Experience the best of what Colorado has to offer; fish, boat, bike, and off-road within moments of walking out the door. Ski the epic powder at Mt. Crested Butte in the winter, hike and enjoy the wildflowers in the summer or just hang out in the yard and relax in the hot tub. Our place has got it all!
The Space
Our sweet little home is in Taylor Canyon, just North of Almont, CO on Highway 742. Located near the confluence of Spring Creek and the Taylor River, our place sits on 2.5 acres of land in one of most picturesque areas of Colorado. In the summertime, Gunnison and Crested Butte are only a 25 minute drive away and both of these places boast excellent recreational, dining and shopping opportunities. During the winter time, driving is slower and some of the short cut roads to Crested Butte are closed. So, expect the drive to CB to be more like a 40 minute trip through magical scenery. It's up to you to choose your own adventure and then retreat to a peaceful and cozy home.
Guest Access
You'll have the entire home to yourself. This home was built six years ago and has all new furnishings. The upstairs bedroom has beautiful views of the craggy rock outcroppings that line the property. This bedroom boasts a full bath with a double headed shower for a unique bathing experience! The kitchen is stocked with all the amenities you'll need to cook a delicious meal. Amenities for cooking include: small toaster oven, regular size oven for baking, french press, coffee grinder, large fridge with freezer, tea kettle and outdoor propane grill with grilling utensils. The kitchen is also a comfortable space for several guests to hang out as we've added a love-seat big enough for two.
When you choose to head downstairs to play games, watch tv or just relax, the garage space is currently set up as a bedroom and a fully furnished family room as well. This room has a sleeper sofa, coffee table, television (no cable so bring DVDs, blue-ray disks, or connect your own device with our HDMI cord) bookshelf with games and a bunkbed for extra guests or kids to sleep. This room is a garage without windows, however, paper star lanterns, cozy lighting and in-floor radiant heat create a warming ambiance. A laundry room with a half bath is also located downstairs. Out the back bedroom door is a bonus room that leads to the backyard and hot tub. You'll love spending time in our backyard! Enjoy a hot-tub soak on the patio or play yard games while you grill. The mature trees are great for shady lounging next to the creek that runs through the property. In the summer, sit on the upstairs deck and sip a drink while enjoying the mountain views. The possibilities are endless here at Freedom of the Hills.

Neighborhood overview
Our house is about 7 miles up Taylor Canyon and 17 miles from Gunnison and Crested Butte. The Taylor Canyon is popular area for outdoor enthusiasts and has many river access points and campgrounds. This area has, arguably, the most accessible and best fishing in Colorado. Spring Creek is full of Brooky's and Rainbows. Kokanee Salmon and other species can be fished in Blue Mesa Reservoir. Taylor Reservoir and Spring Creek Reservoir are only 20 minutes up the road. The Taylor River has both huge trophy trout as well as exciting whitewater for those who like to raft or kayak. Doctor's Park loop, a world class mountain biking trail, can be ridden right from the house. The first buttress in Taylor Canyon has over 100 routes and is only a quarter mile from the house for those who like to climb. In the winter, back-country skiers and snowmobilers can access hundreds of acres of National Forest. Keep your eyes peeled for eagles, bighorn sheep, ermine, mountain goats, showshoe hare, elk, moose, deer and many other animals that call this area home. You won't have to venture far to see why this area is so special.
Getting around
You will need to have a vehicle for transportation. A free bus runs from Gunnison to Crested Butte and can be picked up in Almont.
Other things to note
Well behaved dogs are allowed. Include the breed and size of your dog in your booking request. We have a gate that can be placed at the base of the stairs to keep your dog in the area of the house with tile/concrete floors. Any scratching on furniture or damage to wood floor and carpets will result in extra charges. We charge a $50 pet fee for each dog.
The only cell-provider that works is Verizon. You will need to drive 7 miles down the canyon to get service with all other providers. Also, it's mountain living so the internet is slow.
CR 742 is winter maintained. The driveway to the house is flat, about 100' long, and plowed in the winter. There is room for several vehicles in the driveway next to the house. There is room to turn around a small trailer in the driveway so bring the boats or off road toys.
Harmel's Guest Ranch is located nearby and is open seasonally. It's a great place to get a drink on the deck or book a guided fishing, climbing, or horseback riding trip.

We had a wonderful stay in this cozy space. The property in warmer months is absolutely stunning. We played lawn games, relaxed in the wooded area and made good use of the very clean hot tub (hot tub cleanliness can be a challenge at most rentals). The indoor space worked well for just the two of us. The only notes I would say is the lower areas of the home (laundry room and sitting/bunk bed area) don’t smell the best so we tried not to spend much time there. The bed in the main upstairs bedroom was very low to the ground and not very comfortable. That said, we will absolutely stay here again and I’d recommend it to anyone. The location is perfect to see the “real Colorado” because that area is among the most beautiful in the state!

The property was exactly what we needed while we hung out in Taylor Park / Gunnison. Three adults shared the house, which was just the right size for our needs as we were able to spread out our gear and able to eat together. The kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked. Overall it was a great property.

Very nice but could be better. No microwave or coffee pot, just toaster oven and French press. Room could easily be made for each. Also, in the upstairs bedroom, a chair or two with reading light could easily be added to help with dressing and reading. Note to Seniors: Kitchen and master bedroom are accessible only by climbing up 17 step stairs.

Awesome property and secluded enough. House was excellent and bedding was wonderful. We will be back

Great place for two. The single shower would make a larger group's hygiene schedule cumbersome, however

Great location and beautiful surroundings
We were traveling throughout Colorado in our RV but stayed here for two nights to celebrate our anniversary. It was a great place to do so, quiet and secluded enough for privacy. There is a lot to do in the area as well. This was our first time using VRBO and I was a little surprised at how the additional costs can add up so be aware of this whenever looking to rent any place. Overall a very nice experience and would recommend this property.

Backyard Paradise
The property was great for our young family. Our 5 and 3 year olds loved running around in the yard and playing in the hammock. The stream running through the yard with tons of fish was great to watch and listen to. Everyone liked getting in the hot tub for a relaxing time before dinner. We could have just stayed in and saved ourself the trouble of loading up the car for excursions up the road. We loved it!

Amazing!
What a fantastic cabin! We were in the area for a wedding in a Gunnison and couldn’t have been happier with staying in Almont. The surrounding area is beautiful, as is this property itself; the creek side-sounds, the rocky cliff sides, the gorgeous night sky, etc. There is such great attention to detail in the cabin- so cozy, warm and welcoming! We explored the towns of Almont and Gunnison, and were able to check out Black Canyon National Park- incredible! The owners responded quickly to any questions we had and provided great info about actives in the area. We highly recommend this cabin, and would love to stay again ourselves!

A perfect mountain escape!
This cabin was so charming and comfortable and the property it sits on is surreal. We soaked in every detail! The craggy rocks that frame the property are beautiful and the backyard is spacious and perfect for morning coffee and doggy playtime. We did a lot of cooking in the well-equipped kitchen and had all the items we needed. The double-head shower was pretty cool and I appreciated all the extra towels and toiletries provided. I loved the privacy of this property and would love to come back for a longer stay. 2 nights weren't enough! Thank you for a truly unique experience!

Winter wonderland!
We had the most amazing stay here. The cabin is surrounded by the most beautiful scenery and is tucked away, yet close enough to both CB and Gunnison. We felt so comfortable and our dogs had the best time running around in the impressive amount of snow! We will definitely be back!!

Amazing getaway spot!
This is our second time here and this place is a whole new world in the summer time! Beth is an amazing host and was able to resolve a tiny little mix up within minutes of us contacting her. This is a perfectly kept, adorable little hideaway and we will continue to come back for getaways! Thanks again Beth!

Awesome, secluded getaway!
The house was very tidy; the floorplan is unique, but interesting and fun. We played a lot of croquet in the back yard and stored our mountain bikes in the shed. The beds, bathrooms and kitchen were nice. Great place and great owners to work with. Thanks!

Perfect get-away spot
This little cabin is surrounded by a bubbling stream, trees, and gorgeous rocks. It is the perfect spot for relaxation, hiking adventures, rafting, fishing and anything in between. We did it all, soaked up every minute and fell asleep to the sound of the stream every night. Located just between Crested Butte and Gunnison we had access to anything we wanted and could also be as secluded as we wanted. It was the perfect family get away spot! Beth was a wonderful communicator and host. The house was as pictured - very clean and welcoming. Clear details about the house and surrounding area were neatly printed in a binder awaiting us when we arrived. We didn't have cell service (we didn't miss it) but wifi was provided. Mostly we enjoyed being unplugged from electronics and instead plugged in and recharged by the creation and relationship around us. Pick Freedom of the Hill for your next CO adventure, you won't regret it! Beth - we'll be back :)

Beautiful Secluded Cabin in the Canyon
This home was the perfect stay for our Honeymoon. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery, hot tub in the snow, and close access to incredible views such as the Taylor River Resevoir. The cabin was cozy, clean and well stocked with games, movies, toiletries and some non-perishable goods. Gunnison has a lot to offer such as shopping, restaurants and friendly locals. We couldn’t have picked a better spot to get away from technology, traffic, and the rest of the world. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and can’t wait to come back and visit soon!

Phenomenal place to relax!
This place couldn't have been any more adorable! Its tucked away just a little bit off the beaten bath, but still completely accessible making it an excellent location if you prefer a private, secluded place to relax with plenty of peace and quiet. The drive back to the house is beautiful as well and its very easy to find.
Beth and Skylar are phenomenal hosts as the place is immaculately well kept inside and out, stocked with many supplies/amenities to mimic the comforts of home. They were responsive and available, providing intricate details to make planning the trip a breeze, and were even able accommodate to a few check in/out requests so we could make the most of our time. The pups enjoyed the trip as well!
We will be back...in fact we already booked our second trip within days of being back from the first!
