About this cottage rental
The recently restored historic Washington Melson House, located at 206 Locust St. is a 2 bedroom vacation cottage that is a short walk from all museums, parks, restaurants, churches and shops in St. Michaels! Rates vary by season, and whether stay is weeknight or weekend. Stays of a week or longer are discounted, as are "last minute" bookings.
The house was built around 1840 by Washington Melson, a sailor, believed to be one of two individuals in Talbot County who voted for Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election of 1860. The house was originally built at only 16 feet wide but enlarged to the current width soon thereafter.
The first floor of the original portion of the Melson House includes a living room and a dining room. To the rear of the original house on the first floor is a kitchen area which opens up by French doors to an outdoor patio. Also connected to the kitchen is a large family room with a queen sleep sofa. There is a half bath off the family room.
The second floor of the original portion of the Melson house is a bedroom having two twin beds and a half bath. The second floor to the rear of the house (accessed by a different staircase than that in the original portion), contains the master bedroom having a queen size bed. There is a full bathroom off this bedroom.

Historic cottage 1 block from both the harbor and the shops and restaurants in town. Quiet street. Lots of history in the cottage. Loved the town of St. Michaels. Great area for bicycling.

Wonderful return visit to St Michaels. This time at a fantastic historical home in perfect location. Home was everything you could ask for and more.
Park your car and walk anywhere, within a very quiet neighborhood, yet minutes from all St Michaels offers. Highly recommend this

Beautiful house Great location. We really enjoyed our first visit to St. Michaels!

This is a clean, beautifully decorated house within walking distance to about everything. Keep in mind the historic nature of the house, however, when using the retrofitted bathrooms. The slant-ceiling shower is a squeeze for taller folks but there's nowhere else for it to go, really. Just part of the charm of the property.

Staying a the Melson House was perfect for my sister and me for the annual Christmas in St. Michaels weekend. We were just a block or two away from the boat parade on the Miles River, the street parade on Talbot Street, and the Christmas marketplace and all the other activities. The house was very comfortable and quaint, and the kitchen was well out-fitted. With the permission of the owner, we had a beautiful fire in the fireplace every evening. (We stopped at Lowe's Bayshore Nursery in Stevensville and bought some well-seasoned firewood en route.) It was so enjoyable to be staying in an historic house surrounded by other historic and interesting homes. St. Michaels offers great restaurants, shops and museums, and is an incredibly friendly town. We joked that we felt like we were in a Hallmark Christmas movie!

Somewhat rustic; pretty; beautiful historic location. Towels need fresher, newer, more abundant. Dish towels in bathrooms were abnormal; no tissues; no extra paper towels. Temperature was well regulated; thermostat; great

The house was in a perfect location to explore St. Michael’s without ever using our car. It was a charming historic cottage and we would definitely rent it again. We brought our 11 year old golden retriever and she was thrilled to meet all the people in town. Such a dog friendly place. Thank you.

This was our annual St.Michael’s anniversary trip and it is the first time we stayed at the Melson House and it will definitely NOT be our last time. The location was great, the place was very quaint and comfortable. Very clean as well. The communication was outstanding. We read some things regarding the showers, but it really was not a big deal. We were able to bring our Golden Retriever with us which is one of the reasons we chose the Melson house. Everything worked out perfectly. It was a great value for the price. We hope to be able to return next year.

It can be tight quarters upstairs with the low angled ceilings, but it’s really very charming. And the location! So perfect. Walk a block and you are in the thick of downtown. No exaggeration! We moved the car once to visit Easton. Otherwise we walked everywhere easily.

Very restful stay. Was close to everything we wanted to see. Parked the car and walked all week. Muskrat Park was a stones throw from the front porch. Super peaceful park. Doggo had a great time - plenty of walking, duck and bunny watching. Discovered a few new very nice beers. Tasted Lyon rims and St. Michaels Winery wines. Enjoyed the roses, peonies, daisies and other beautifully landscaped yards and walking gardens. We have found a lovely new town to visit!

We drove to Assateague Island to see the wild horses and were rewarded by seeing a 4 day old foal. We also visited Blackwater park and saw some great birds, including a Piliated Woodpecker.
The house could use at least one box of tissues., and I would be somewhat concerned about the step that is wobbly in the side entrance, Thanks for a couple of great days.

Easy walking distance to everything this photographer wanted to photograph in St. Michaels. The bonus was staying in a wonderfully restored house in an historic neighborhood furnished with period antiques without sacrificing comfort or convenience.

The W.R. Melson Houset is an adorable cottage, located in the hart of St. Michaels historic district. It's a close walk to everything in St. Michaels. We really loved our stay at the W.R. Melson Houseand look forward to staying again.

This particular community is sort of Colonial Willamsbergish and it was our wish to choose accommodations that were of the period. This house only partially uses period decor, and it's sort of a mish mash in most of the rooms. The master bedroom shower was unacceptable to us and could be easily improved. There were ants in the kitchen. Generally in the kitchen and throughout the house there was a lot of junk that didn't need to be there; the contents need to be simplified and organized. The place needs an overall interior paint job and a carpenter to fix 100 things. A thorough cleaning might also be a good decision. For the moment is appears that the owner is more concerned about collecting money than making this lovely house period perfect.

Truly charming historical house, very comfortable and in the perfect location close to the water, parks, shops and restaurants. I would definitely stay again.

Even with all the modern conveniences, the Washington Melson house was like going back in time and we loved it. We were totally enchanted by the history of the house, the antique furnishings, and the overall comfort, not to mention its location half a block from the wharf, the summer concerts at Muskrat Park, and within walking distance of everything in St. Michaels. We would absolutely stay there again--and I hope we do!

Nice house but....
We arrrived to our house to find it had not been cleaned after the previous renter (the Melson House). Contacted the owner and he offered an adjacent property instead (the Bruff house which he said was an "upgrade" and was our compensation for our trouble). We moved all our things out of the uncleaned house in to the adjacent house. The owner called back and said we'd have to move back to the unclean house on Thursday because someone had rented it starting Friday or we could go to dinner and the unclean house would be cleaned and we could move back that evening. Since we had already moved into two houses that day, we opted to stay in the "upgrade" house and move Thursday. The upgrade house (the Bruff house) was less than OK. It had a front yard with a partial view of the harbor. That was the only part that was an upgrade. The master bedroom in the older part of the home had minimal air conditioning airflow. It was very warm sleeping there even with the ceiling fan. The only shower in the house was on the first floor by the kitchen. We noticed ant traps placed around the kitchen when we first moved in but no ants. We also noticed peeling and stained paint on the ceiling and wall by the kitchen range. Well the first time we used the range, swarms of crawling and flying ants erupted from under the range. We sprayed them with cans of Raid which were under the kitchen sink. Then we had a thunderstorm and water began coming in by the range where the stained and peeling paint was. Obviously the ants and leak were not new problems but did not appear to be taken care of. There is torn screens and torn plastic in the small screened in back porch. There is peeling paint on the inside of the window in the bath hallway. Some of the window frames outside have rotten areas with pieces of rotted wood falling off. On the one side of outside of the house, the paint is majorly peeling. There is a corner tile missing on the top of the bathroom shower. Some of the AC/heating ducts are rusted inside the house. The first house, the Melson house, was much nicer and better maintained than the Bruff house. The master bedroom was cooler and had much better air flow than the Bruff house. The Bruff house was not an upgrade at all when you compare the condition of the two. The owner was timely in responding but as you can tell it was not a good experience. Th Bruff house really needs some work. Stay at the Melson House and not the Bruff house.

Cozy historic cottage
The house was perfect for the two of us to escape for a few days. On a quiet street just a block from the water, we took long walks throughout the neighborhood and shopping district. Our dog loved playing in the park less than half a block away. The house is just as described full of history that takes you back in time.

Location and fun quirks
The property is an interesting mix of old and new. The wifi is very spotty and they could use some new towels (the first one I unfolded had a huge hole in it!) and the kitchen is very sparsely outfitted. Bathroom alert: there is only one shower and what a wacky one it is - due to the slop of the dormer the shower curtain rod is only up to your chest and you have to crawl under it to get in the shower. Weird huh? The staircases are not for the faint of heart but it IS a cool old property!

Great place!
We had a wonderful time and stay at this property! We brought our dog, who is a black lab and our daughter along with her best friend. Every restaurant that we went to was dog friendly! The house is beautiful, the pictures do not do it justice. The location is wonderful, so close to everything but 1/2 block off of the main drag so it’s not disruptive to your own experience. The owner was very accessible and great with communication. We loved St Michael’s. The local fare is WAY better than most eastern shore restaurants. Will definitely come again. Thank you for a great time!

Property was quiet and historic. Convenient to the near by park and water views (water not visible from home). Much renovation has occurred over the years, so not sure of actual historical representation. Lots of work still needs to be done on the home.

Great History
I’ve always admired the homes on this block & have wanted to stay in one for years. My husband & I were recently married in St. Michael’s and I fulfilled my dream of staying there. It was great looking at the construction of the home. The location is perfect as it is right in town. The only complaint, & this is so minor, is that some of the dining furniture is a bit too rustic and didn’t look like it would hold a person without breaking. But we loved this place and will definitely be back.

Wonderful historic home in the heart of St Michaels
This was a great place to stay right in the heart of St Michaels. We loved being able to walk to all the shops and historic spots in the community. The house itself had plenty of room for two couples with good privacy between the two second floor bedrooms. It also had several large, shared areas for entertaining and interacting.
All of that said, keep in mind this is an 1840 built home and is not a modern, all the convenience hotel. It has character and charm but is historic and older because of that. One full bathroom off one bedroom means you must plan a bit for shower time if there are more than one couple. It does have two other half baths including one in the second bedroom. Parking is also a bit confusing, but once you get there it is fairly obvious (NOTE: pull as far back on the gravel as you can, or the neighbors may contact you since they share the driveway).
We loved the house and the area and would definitely rent it again.
